Save This Helpful List Of 28 Short Vowel Picture Books

One of my favorite ways to work on a skill in the classroom is through trade books! Sometimes this seems like an obvious thing to do. If you are learning about butterflies you may pull out The Very Hungry Caterpillar or if you are talking about Thanksgiving, you might read Turkey Trouble.

But do you gravitate toward books when you are talking about phonics? There are so many great books that coincidently have a focus on a particular sound. Do you have a stack of short vowel picture books set aside? What about picture books that focus on vowel teams?

You probably noticed when you were teaching rhyming in the past that kids can pick up on rhymes a lot quicker when they hear them. Phonics concepts can be the same way.

The more a student hears a particular sound, the more likely they will be to retrieve it when they are reading or writing on their own.

The list of books you could use when teaching short vowel sounds is endless. Here are a few suggestions to consider when you are focusing on short a, short e, short i, short o, or short u sounds.

Short Vowel Picture Books by Sound

Table of Contents

Short A Books

One great picture book that can help teach the short “a” sound is “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss. This classic book is filled with words that contain the short “a” sound, making it a great tool for reinforcing this vowel sound.

Anotherto add to your short vowel picture books stack is “Pat Sat, Mat” by Edith Kunhardt. This book features simple sentences that are perfect for beginning readers who are just learning how to sound out words.

Short E Books

“The Best Nest” by P.D. Eastman is a fun and engaging picture book that can be used to teach the short “e” sound. The book features a bird named Mr. and Mrs. Bird who are searching for the perfect place to build their nest. The story is filled with words that contain the short “e” sound, making it a great resource for teaching this vowel sound.

Another to add to your short vowel picture books stack is “Bedtime for Frances” by Russell Hoban. This book features a young badger named Frances who is getting ready for bed. The story is filled with short “e” words that can help reinforce this vowel sound.

Short I Books

“The Big Pig” by Eileen Spinelli is a wonderful picture book that can be used to teach the short “i” sound. The story is about a big pig who loves to eat, and the words in the book are full of short “i” sounds.

Another to add to your short vowel picture books stack is “Pig in a Wig” by Emma J. Virjan. This book features a pig who is trying to find the perfect wig to wear, and the words in the book are perfect for teaching the short “i” sound.

Short O Books

“Fox in Socks” by Dr. Seuss is a great picture book that can be used to teach the short “o” sound. The book is filled with tongue-twisting rhymes that are full of short “o” sounds, making it a great tool for teaching this vowel sound.

Another to add to your short vowel picture books stack is “Bob Books Set 1: Beginning Readers” by Bobby Lynn Maslen. This book features simple sentences that are perfect for beginning readers who are just starting to learn about short vowel sounds, including the short “o” sound.

Short U Books

“The Bug in the Jug Wants a Hug” by Brian P. Cleary is a fun and engaging picture book that can be used to teach the short “u” sound. The book features silly rhymes that are filled with short “u” words, making it a great resource for teaching this vowel sound.

Another book to add to your short vowel picture books stack is “Tub Time with Tate” by Laura Gehl. This book features a young boy named Tate who is taking a bath, and the words in the book are full of short “u” sounds.

Reading vowels and consonants

Pronunciation of vowels and consonants

In Hebrew, not separate consonants and vowels appear as indecomposable units of the phonetic composition of a word, but a close combination of a consonant sound with a subsequent vowel. The combination of a consonant sound followed by a vowel is an inseparable complex, and the consonant of such a complex is its main part, and the vowels give this complex various variations.

The Hebrew alphabet has 22 consonants. Each letter has as many readings as there are vowels that can be combined with a given consonant phoneme.

In some cases, there is a combination of a consonant sound with a "zero" vowel, that is, there is no vowel in this combination. Then the letter will denote a pure consonant sound. In some combinations, on the contrary, the main consonant component is not pronounced. Then the corresponding letter serves to designate a vowel sound.

B 7th-8th centuries AD The Tiberias school developed the so-called system of vocalization (vocalization) of biblical texts. This system consists of special signs (נִיקוּד "nowhere"), which are placed mainly under the letters (as well as above and after the letter), and indicate the way the letter is read, that is, the vowel sound associated with it and the pronunciation of the consonant sound. .

Initially, the vowel system was designed to preserve the correct reading of biblical texts, but later it became widely used for the needs of ordinary writing.

At present, printed Bible texts, poems, books for children and some textbooks are supplied with vowel signs. Separate vowel marks are put down in ordinary literature to clarify the pronunciation of words in doubtful cases.

Each vowel has several vowels. This is explained by the fact that in Classical Hebrew there were long (full and middle) short and extra-short vowels. In modern Hebrew, the difference in pronunciation of long and short sounds has been lost, but their spelling has remained traditional.

The vowel sound indicated by the corresponding symbol is pronounced after the letter to which it refers, that is, the consonant sound is pronounced first, and then the vowel.

First, let's get acquainted with the signs (vowels) that denote vowel sounds.

There is another vowel in Hebrew, in the form of a colon ( ְ ), which is called “shva”. In most cases, this vowel indicates the absence of a vowel sound. But there are a number of cases when "shva" is pronounced as a short vowel sound "e".
The rules for reading the vowel "seam" are discussed in a separate article.

Let's move on to consonants.
In the classical language, the reading of all letters was different. However, over time, a number of sounds were lost, and therefore, in the modern language, the reading of some letters coincides.

Each letter can also represent a specific number.
In the table below, next to the reading of the letters, their numerical values are given.

*The letter א is not pronounced in the modern language. Only the vowel is pronounced,         , which goes along with "alef".

The dot inside the letter is called “dagesh”. The letter ב with a dot is pronounced as the sound "b", without a dot - "c".
Similarly, the letters כ and פ.

*The letter ע is not pronounced in the modern language. Only the vowel is pronounced, , , which goes along with "ayyin".

At the beginning of a word, the letter כ sounds "k", in the middle of a word - "k" or "x", at the end of the word - "x".

At the beginning of a word, the letter פ sounds "p", in the middle of a word - "p" or "f", at the end of the word - "f".

In transcription, the letter ה is transmitted by the Latin letter "h". In modern Hebrew there is a tendency to pronounce it as a cross between "g" and "x". If you cannot pronounce this sound, it is better not to pronounce it at all, but you cannot replace it with pure sounds "g" and "x".

The letter ל is pronounced softer than the Russian “l”, a cross between “l” as in the word “lyamka” and “l” as in the word “lamp”. The Hebrew ל is the alveolar sound.
In order to pronounce it correctly, you need to touch the alveoli with the tip of the tongue, not the base of the upper teeth.

Reminds the Russian sound “х”, but
is formed not in the palatal part of the oral cavity, but deep in the larynx. The forceful pushing of air produces a characteristic rubbing sound with resonance in the pharyngeal cavity (similar to expectoration).

The sound "sh" resembles the Russian sound "sh",

but is pronounced softer with slightly open jaws. The articulation resembles the pronunciation of the Russian letter Shch.

The sounds "t" and "d", unlike the Russian language, are pronounced when the tip of the tongue touches the alveoli.

Note:

  • The correct Hebrew pronunciation of the sound ר is the same as the Russian "r", that is, not grassed (not burr). The burr pronunciation has emerged quite recently, and Russian speakers should not at all artificially pronounce ר with a burr pronunciation.

  • One of the main differences between Hebrew and Russian is that almost all Hebrew consonants, except for "y" and "sh", do not soften before the vowel "i". The sound "and" sounds like a cross between the Russian "and" and "y".

Chapter 1. Sounds.

Lesson 1. Features of English sounds. Transcription.

There are many more sounds in English than letters. All sounds are divided into vowels and consonants. Some of them sound similar to Russians, while others are different.

Remember! Sounds we hear and pronounce.

To be able to pronounce any words, you need to know all the English sounds. They are indicated by special icons in square brackets - transcriptions.

Try to pronounce and memorize English sounds. You will find them in the next lessons.

Lesson 2. Consonants.

Get to know the consonant sounds. Try to remember how they are designated and pronounced.

Lesson 3. Vowel sounds.

Get to know the vowel sounds. Try to remember how they are designated and pronounced.

Remember! Vowel sounds are long and short.

Lesson 4. Diphthongs.

In English there are diphthongs - combinations of two sounds in which one sound smoothly passes into the second. Remember their designation and pronunciation.

Remember!

To learn how to read words, you have to get acquainted with the rules of reading and some exceptions to them.

Lesson 2. Reading consonants.

There are 20 consonants in the English alphabet. Most of them are always read the same, but some are different. Carefully study the rules for reading consonants and read examples of words using transcriptions.

Lesson 3. Reading vowels. Stressed syllable and its types.

There are 6 vowels in the English alphabet. They are read differently in stressed and unstressed syllables. In order to correctly stress the word, in transcriptions, a special sign [ ‘ ] is placed in front of the stressed syllable - apostrophe. The reading of a vowel in such a syllable depends on its type.

There are 4 types in total:

I type (open) - ends with a vowel or a consonant followed by an unreadable letter e.

my [ maɪ ]

game [ geɪm ]

II type (closed) vowel 9009

The letter r is not pronounced in III and IV types, but only changes the reading of the vowel before it.

Carefully study the table of reading vowels depending on the type of syllable.
