The Homer Group in Lower Providence forms separate marketing division – The Mercury
LOWER PROVIDENCE – Navitas. If you Google the name, companies selling everything from flax powder to investment strategies to batteries come up – which is understandable, since it’s catchy, memorable and a tad exotic.
Being the Latin word for ‘energy,’ Navitas perfectly fits the vibrant fresh direction The Homer Group is taking with its new creative marketing and digital division as well.
When Googling Navitas Marketing, it’s immediately apparent that the Trooper-based company has put its own unique stamp on the moniker.
By branching out with a distinctively branded second operation, the family-owned company that was founded as Homer Photo Labs in Jenkintown in 1963 by Bernie Homer and evolved into a printing and full-service marketing, design and digital media enterprise, is now able to clear up misconceptions and better define its diverse expertise.
‘The name Navitas is what our entire branding message is about – the energy and passion that we bring to projects for each of our clients, said Kevin Homer, the third-generation family member who heads up Navitas. ‘We felt that with the separate branding it really helps to drive the message home.’
As Kevin and his dad Guy Homer – who came on board in 1983 and is president of The Homer Group – focused on the printing and graphic design end of the business and worked together with clients the last few years, they discovered that expectations have changed.
‘Companies were typically no longer looking for a one-stop shop,’ Guy said. ‘They want to work with a company who offers a specialty, and someone else for another specialty. A lot of times in today’s marketing, the branding messages for audiences are different, so we felt the best way to continue to grow the business was to establish this separate division, to promote that it’s not printers creating websites; it’s not marketing people selling printing. We really do have experts on staff that are specialized and will help get the message across.’
Kevin Homer said that, more and more, companies were not so eager to discuss online marketing with a printer, nor were they jumping at the chance to discuss printing services with a marketing agency, even though The Homer Group had a proven track record for doing it all.
‘We were encountering a misconception all too frequently with clients,’ he said. ‘Printing is most often purchased based on price, audience message and value proposition. We are lucky that The Homer Group has a wonderful reputation in this area. They’ve been around for 50 years, are very highly involved with community organizations, and a lot of times in working with businesses in the area it was hard to convey that we’re more than just a printing company offering marketing services. So, developing the two separate brandings and messages will enable us to present the specialties of each business. Navitas helps bridge the two together.’
Marketing isn’t something you can learn from a textbook, Kevin Homer pointed out.
‘It’s something you learn from doing it. We really have the marketing agency in place, with the experts here. We have the knowledge, the experience and the team of specialists that really knows various aspects of marketing, whether it be social media or trade show marketing.’
Navitas was recently awarded the contract to redevelop the website for the Municipality of Norristown.
As explained on the Navitas website, officials wanted ‘a website that would be mobile friendly, improve the user experience with a revised design, and include a microsite for its economic development efforts. Our proposal included the development of a responsive website for desktop, tablet, and mobile optimization, a strategy that would engage public interaction on the site, and many other enhancements. We were told that we were selected as their web development agency based on our marketing and website design qualifications, as well as competitive pricing. With our dedication to the Greater Norristown area and passion for economic development projects, we look forward to delivering a website with the strategy and capabilities that will help the Municipality of Norristown with its revitalization efforts.’
The Homer Group’s creative marketing and digital success has grown so significantly in recent years there was never any question that it warranted its own imprint, Kevin Homer noted.
‘One of the things that we stress a lot is listening to your audience. How do you change your messaging for that particular audience? We have a lot of clients that exhibit at trade shows, and for many years we’ve been producing trade show signage and promotional products with traditional marketing materials. Bringing in that online aspect, you want your show attendees tweeting about you, posting about you on Facebook, and you want to be generating leads at the show and ways to follow up with attendees later.’
Online marketing has evolved since the days when having a website was an end in itself, Kevin Homer noted.
‘Every company has a website now. The question is, what are you doing with it? It’s important that you have the search engine optimization, and social media is critical … forming relationships with your existing customers and potential customers. With The Homer Group, when we were offering everything under the sun, it was sometimes difficult to convey that message of everything we were able to provide. So, from an online marketing standpoint for us, the separate Navitas division will help drive the message home, and help the search engines understand what it is that we do so we’re higher in search rankings as well.’
