11 of The Best Word Game Apps 2022 Has To Offer

Word games can save you from the unending bouts of boredom and can also be a great way to bond with people. They’re challenging, engaging and put our verbal abilities to test. They’re also really good for your brain in a lot of ways. They help build concentration because a lot of them require focus. They activate the parts of your brain that take part in short-term and long-term memory processes. So playing word games regularly improves your memory over time. Further, when the game lies just at the edge of your abilities, it helps you improve your cognitive function and vocabulary. So let’s look at some of the best word game apps 2022 has to offer.

Thanks to tech, a lot of our favourite word games are now available online. There’s endless scrabble boards, crosswords and word searches contained in our singular devices. There are also so many clever variations of these classic games to try out! And then there are word game apps that build on familiar concepts to create something entirely new and unique. I’ve tried every single game recommended here (which means I was playing games on my phone in the name of research for about a week!). Every last one of them was quite fun and possibly improved my brain function. So I’m not complaining. I hope you like them too!

1. Wordle (Browser)

Whether you have hopped onto the train to Wordle station or not, you’ve probably heard its siren. This word-guessing game is everywhere. Each player gets six attempts to guess a five-letter word. The colour of the tiles changes indicating the correct letters and positions in the word-to-be-guessed. If that isn’t challenging enough for you, you can also turn on “hard mode.” This involves using all the previously revealed letters in all your subsequent guesses.

There’s a few reasons why this word game’s hype hasn’t died down yet. The simplicity of the game makes it easy for anyone to understand how to play it. The one-word-a-day strategy ensures that people don’t get bored of it. And, trying to guess the same word on a given day with millions of people creates a sense of community. Considering its popularity, The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven figure amount. As of now, the app is still free. There are also a lot of similar apps that let you play Wordle in different languages.

2. Scrabble Go (Android, iOS)

As the name suggests, this is really just Scrabble on-the-go. It’s super fun with the additional layers of customization and rewards that tech can bring. You can compete against your friends, strangers on the internet or the AI. Something I particularly enjoyed was being able to play multiple games at the same time. Don’t want to patiently wait for the other person to type in their word? I don’t want to, either! I think my personal sweet spot is competing with three individual players at once. Having three separate boards to compete on kept me thoroughly engaged the entire time I was playing.

Scrabble Go follows the Collins Official Scrabble Dictionary. It’s free with in-app purchases. Also check out ‘Can You Play The Word Fart In Scrabble?‘ to gain insights into the history of the Scrabble dictionary.

3. USA Today Crossword (Android, iOS, Browser)

Here’s what a fellow Contributor Isabelle Popp has to say about this word game:

We are truly living in a golden age of crossword puzzles. This daily crossword, available via apps in the Apple App Store or Google Play, as well as playable on the USA Today website and in the paper itself, is the best in the biz. With truly fresh entries and clever cluing, people who’ve avoided crosswords for fear of fusty language and arcane trivia will find lots to love.

“Editor Erik Agard has made huge strides in diversifying not only the content of the puzzles but the constructors themselves. Women and people of color construct the majority of puzzles appearing in the USA Today now. If you’re ad-tolerant, play for free, otherwise subscribe for that extra smooth solving experience.”

4. Pictoword (Android, iOS)

This word game app involves both unscrambling and identifying pictures. You gotta guess the word based on the visual cues given and type it using the letters provided. It’s free with in-app purchases and quite fun!

5. Cryptogram (Android, iOS)

A cryptogram is a puzzle that uses encrypted text. You solve the puzzle to reveal the message. The ciphers used in this game were created to encrypt military or personal messages. When you solve the cryptogram on this word game app, it reveals a motivational quote. Sometimes, solving is easier if you’re already familiar with the quote. The video below shows how the game is played. It’s free with in-app purchases available.

6.

SpellTower (Android, iOS)

This word game involves finding words within the spell tower to clear the tiles. The tower keeps rising and the game is over if it reaches the top. It has three different modes: Puzzle Mode, Tower Mode and Rush Mode. This word game is free with in-app purchases and definitely worth checking out.

7. Wordscapes (Android, iOS)

This is one of the most popular word game apps so you’ve probably played it, come across it, or at least heard of it. It involves building words from a combination of letters. Some of these words end up filling up the spaces provided on the screen. It’s free with in-app purchases. The game Word Cookies! also has a very similar concept with a different user interface.

8. Word Search Puzzle (Android, iOS)

Why mess with a classic? This word game app is free with in-app purchases. It involves searching words arranged vertically, horizontally or diagonally. It has different difficulty levels and you can choose the one that intersects with your abilities. One of my friends said, and I quote, “I can just feel my brain getting smarter every time I play this.” At its best, it might do the same for you. At the very least, it might save you from boredom!

9. Typeshift (Android, iOS)

This is a really cool anagram puzzle. You shift letters vertically to create meaningful words in the mid-horizontal row. The puzzle is complete when all the letters on the screen are used in at least one word. This usually happens when you all use the core words that the puzzle is made of. You also end up finding a bunch of extra words in the process.

This word game is built by the creator of SpellTower and shows up repeatedly in lists of Word game apps that keep the brain sharp. It is free with in-app purchases.

10. Four Letters (Android, iOS)

This word game involves building words using four letters (yes, it’s right there in the name!). To get a high score, you build these words as quickly as you can. You can play this game for as long as you can before the time runs out. This app is free with ads. You can pay to remove the ads.

11. Bonza Word Puzzle (Android, iOS)

This word game app is like a deconstructed crossword puzzle. You get one clue about the theme of the crossword. The letters are arranged in horizontal and vertical patterns. You can drag them to make words that are relevant to the theme. This is quite easy with a few words and a familiar theme and gets tricky as the number of words increase (trickier if you’re not very familiar with the theme).

It has two puzzle packs that are free along with the daily puzzle. The rest can be accessed through in-app purchases.

Wordscapes

Escape the day with this word game.

Woman's Day

If you always finish your weekly crossword puzzle, Wordscapes is a must-try. This word game has a similar layout to a crossword puzzle, with lines of empty spaces intersecting, but this time there are no clues. Instead, you are given between three and seven letters in your "wheel. " You connect these letters to form words by dragging your finger across the screen. The goal is to fill your board with the correctly chosen words; however, if you spell a word that doesn't appear on the board it becomes a "bonus word" that can be used later in the game. While the instructions are pretty basic, there are various "power-ups" that bring this app to the next level, as well as weekly Wordscapes tournaments for those who are serious fans. Another fun aspect of this word game is that each level has a scenic snapshot of nature. So while you may become frustrated as you level up, the mountainous or coastal view will provide some escape as you brainstorm words.

      Words with Friends 2

Words with Friends has its own cult following like other popular word games. The second version has the same objectives as the original, but with the added bonus of the latest features, including a Solo Challenge mode. The beauty of this word game app is that you can play against a friend (as the name implies) or a random player. Similar to Scrabble, players can only form words horizontally or vertically. You can use your turn to swap a tile from your rack with a new letter from the Tile Bag. The game typically ends when one player has played every tile in their rack, but there are some exceptions. To read more about these intricacies and how the scoring works, check out these helpful instructions.

      SpellTower

If you aren't immediately drawn to this game by its fantastical name, then you will be soon enough after playing a round. The general gist of the game is to form words from letters on your board, almost reminiscent of Boggle. Things get a bit dicier as you experiment with over eight different modes, such as "Search" which prompts you to find the best word on the board. SpellTower has its own website that is super helpful and user-friendly for new players. The best-selling word game was developed by Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger in 2008, and since its founding has been downloaded over a million times. Join in on the word game fun and add to the growing list of words made by SpellTower fans — it's already above a billion!

      Word Cookies!

Fancy a fun treat? Try a round of Word Cookies!

      Woman's Day

Bakers will love this word game that reimagines apps like Wordscapes with a sweet twist. You are still forming words with letters from your "bowl," but this time your guesses are designed as cookies on a baking sheet and each level has its own flavor, including (but not limited to) oatmeal, ginger, and red velvet. There are various packs and even weekly missions that players, or bakers, can take on. While the aesthetics of the app are adorable, there do tend to be a fair amount ads between rounds. But you can purchase a membership for Word Cookies! to skip the ads and get back to baking (words).

      Download: iOS, Android

      Scrabble GO

Scrabble GO is exactly what its name implies: a mobile device version of the almost century-old game. Similar to Words with Friends 2, Scrabble GO gives you the option to connect with your friends on the app, or opt to play with strangers. Either way, you will be given seven tiles from the 100 letter tile set. Just like with Scrabble, you form words vertically and horizontally and each letter also has a certain value associated with it. What sets Scrabble GO apart from its gaming app opponents are the boosts and gems you collect as you play. These help you level up your skills but also bring new challenges to the word game.

      Download: iOS, Android

      Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune Fan? Try this game (show).

      Woman's Day

Are you a big fan of the sensational TV show "Wheel of Fortune?" Then the mobile version of this iconic game show is the next word game app you need to download. Spin the famous wheel and pretend to be a contestant from the comfort of your home.

      Download: iOS, Android

      Alpha Omega

Another take on the crossword puzzle, Alpha Omega asks players to unscramble letters, instead of forming words from clues. Set up with intersecting rows, the app has a clean and calming aesthetic. Each time you unscramble a word, it locks in place to help you determine the other words on your board. If you get stuck, you can click on the clue at the top of the screen. If this sounds daunting, know that the first and last letters of each word are already set in place!

      Download: iOS, Android

      Typeshift

Typeshift was also developed by Zach Gage and can be played online or downloaded for your iPhone, Android, or tablet. Regardless of how you choose to play this free word game, you will still slide columns up or down to spell out a word in the center row. There are themed puzzles such as Snowday, Take Me Out To The Ball Game, and Earth Day which ask you to form words under these themes.

      Download: iOS, Android

      Crossword Puzzle Redstone

While these crosswords are delivered to your fingertips via an app, this game is still the same old word puzzle that has been entertaining generations. There are thousands of crosswords available for free thanks to Redstone; the app has even been credited as the "crossword lover's dream app." In addition to thousands of puzzles, you can also choose between four different difficulty levels as well as make use of various features such as "Smart Look Up" which will you give you suggestions for your next move. Another perk of this app is that it can clear your errors, rather than you having to scratch out mistakes on a physical crossword.

      Download: iOS, Android

      Pictoword

More of a visual person? Try Pictoword.

      Woman's Day

Pictoword asks players to spell a hidden word with only one hint — or perhaps two hints. Each round a player will see two images appear on their screen. Below these there will be 13 scrambled letters that contain the word that the two images are trying to spell. Your job is to guess this word, not necessarily using all of the tiles available. Sometimes the word will be obvious, while other times you will have to put two and two together (literally).

      Download: iOS, Android

      WordJong

WordJong takes inspiration from Mahjong Solitaire but instead of matching winning symbols, players are solving daily word puzzles. Similar to word games like Wordle, there is a new challenge each day. If you were quick to solve that day's word, you can go back to previous days and keep playing as many rounds as you like. There are also seven different Zodiac characters who each have their own style and difficulty level. The more challenges you complete, the more gold coins and power-ups you obtain.

TOP 10 word games for all ages

Spoiler: there is a danger that children will enjoy it so much that you may no longer be able to get tired and bribe with your phone.

Modern children are so accustomed to playing exclusively with gadgets that sometimes simple word games are not even familiar to them. Tired of hearing on the bus, in the car, in line: “Maaam, give me the phone!”? Then it's time to remember about "Cities", "Nonsense" and other fun games for which you will not need anything but your time and imagination.

          Games with the name

This is the easiest game available even for preschoolers who are not yet familiar with letters. Perfectly develops phonemic hearing, attention and introduces sounds in a playful way.

How to play? Everything is extremely simple. Together with the child, we determine what letter his name begins with. And now we propose to come up with the maximum number of words that begin with this letter. Sasha is both an airplane, and a samovar, and a tablecloth, and a runner, and a Snickers, and even a spaniel. And then you can remember that Sasha is, in fact, also Alexander. And that means there will be apricots, oranges, pineapples, an airport, etc.

For those who are older, you can complicate the game and name words only of a certain group. This will help to get acquainted with the concepts of generalization and classification and significantly expand the vocabulary.

On "A" we will first invent only fruits, then vegetables, and then musical instruments.

          Search for difficult words

This game is more difficult. It requires concentration, but even preschoolers who are just learning to read will play it with great pleasure. After all, you don’t need to invent words, but look around! Here, by the way, the reaction is also useful.

First you have to explain what a compound word is. This is a word that consists of several words or a stable expression of two words that refers to one thing.

Ready to find a dairy and concrete mixer? A motorcade, a gas station and a phone booth? Then go ahead. Ideal for long car rides.

With older children, you can take a notebook and keep a record of all the words found. And with those who are younger, pronounce all complex words in syllables.

          Story from word

This is an extremely fun and entertaining game that will keep you entertained for a long time. We come up with any word, it is better to start with short letters of 3-4. Let it be SUMMER. And now you need to come up with a new word from each letter. And ideally, so that you get a real mini-story. Suppose Pilot Raccoon rumbled wildly or Fox Egoza Quietly departed.

The benefits of the game: the child learns to coordinate words according to the meaning and masters the logic of the story.

How many one-word stories can you come up with?

          Nonsense for the letter ….

Can you think of a story where all words start with the same letter? And you try! It can be very funny.

“Frantic possum Oleg very carefully walked around the garden outskirts”

Or “Sleepy pig Sasha sat angrily with a chest of soot”

By the way, you can choose a letter by the name of the players, or you can learn the alphabet in parallel. In this case, one calls the number, and the second counts the letter of the alphabet. In a couple of months, the alphanumeric letter will fly off from the teeth.

          Guess what I guessed

This is the easiest game for preschoolers. Teaches to classify objects, to determine their properties and features. You think of a word and give one clue. Suppose you think of a brick road sign and say "It's round." If the child did not guess correctly, give the following hint: "It's red." And so on ad infinitum. Don't forget to switch roles.

          Danetka

If in the “guessing game” everyone just guesses the objects, then in “Danetka” you need to connect analytical thinking. The game teaches how to correctly compose and ask questions, listen carefully to the answers and analyze the information received. It is especially great to play danetki if you discuss in advance the number of possible questions. For example, "I thought of some princess, you have 20 questions to find out which one."

          Grandma's Chest

This game is somewhat reminiscent of the famous Snowball. The first one says "I went to the attic and found striped socks in my grandmother's chest. " The second continues: "I went to the attic and found striped socks and a teapot in my grandmother's chest." And so in a circle. The first one to forget at least one of the items already named loses.

          Grandfather's story

A storytelling game that gently teaches the alphabet. The meaning is the same as in the grandmother's chest, only the items will have to be named alphabetically.

Example: “I went to the attic and found a watermelon, a shoe, a spindle, a nut, a plank, a raccoon, a hedgehog, a chewing gum, a splinter, a needle”, etc.

          Cities

The city game, beloved by everyone in childhood, does not lose its popularity. It trains phonemic hearing, expands vocabulary and helps to get acquainted with new concepts. Ideal for a large group of children.

Choose a theme (cities, fruits, musical instruments, pieces of furniture, toys, etc.). We name the word, and the next player calls the word with the last letter of the previous one.

You can change the rules and agree to name as many words as possible according to the given rules for a while. Are you sure that you can name more animals in 60 seconds than your student?

          “I know five…”

This fun game from our childhood can be played not only with a ball. Although it is certainly more interesting with him. The game then develops not only the vocabulary and pumps encyclopedic knowledge, but also hones coordination.

Just offer each player a new category. Masha knows 5 horned animals. Sonya knows 5 names of rivers. "Danya knows 5 composers."

The older the child, the more difficult the categories can be. With this game, you can learn historical dates and geographical names, world capitals and animals by continent.

If you run into problems during the game, you know what to do at home. Open an encyclopedia and remember what other dinosaurs are, and what other marsupials, besides koalas and kangaroos, live in Australia.

Play, expand your vocabulary, develop your imagination and just be together, because you are a team!

          Jumbline 2

          Price: Free (with ads)

Jumbline 2 is a colorful word search game. It's a bit like mixing Boggle and Scrabble. You will receive a set of seven or so letters. You mix them up and find different words. This is definitely not a new concept. There are dozens of similar games on Google Play. However, we like the performance of this app. You manually move the squares around to form words and then click those words to add them to the collection. The game features over 20,000 five, six and seven letter puzzles, as well as several different game modes, achievements and tablet support. It uses American spellings of the words, but some of them are missing. However, you can recommend words or suggest removal using the in-app feedback form. The game is completely free with ad support.

          Letterpress

          Price: free / $4.99.

Letterpress is another unique word puzzle game. It's kind of like a richer version of Boggle. You and another player go head-to-head with a five-by-five letter grid. As you create words, each letter is filled with your color. The game ends when you complete each letter with a color. There are some rules, but it's actually quite a difficult game. You can play with other people or with one of four bots. The game also has some of the simplest ads we've ever seen, Oxford Dictionary support, bad words, and even plenty of stats to keep track of your game. The user interface is very simple, but the game is surprisingly fun. We definitely recommend this. This is definitely one of the best free word games.

          Typeshift

Price: free / up to $5.99.

Typeshift is another interesting twist on the classic game. You get rows of letters. You move each line up and down until a word appears. The puzzle continues until the player has highlighted each tile. The first steps are pretty easy and you shouldn't have any problems with them. However, the longer the game goes on, the harder each puzzle becomes. The user interface won't get any awards, but the controls are solid. There is a hint system and you earn hints by watching ads. However, sometimes this function does not work correctly. You will also receive puzzle hints along with the standard game mode. It's a good, simple game.

          Words

          Price: Free (with ads)

Words is a classic word search style game. You get a grid of letters and find words. Letters must have one side (diagonal, horizontal or vertical) for both the next letter and the previous one. Each new word has a different color so you can see where you were before. The game ends when the player has found all the given words. Some other features include two game modes, multiple difficulty levels, multiple language support, and an online dictionary if you need one. The game is a bit buggy on some devices from time to time, but most of the feedback has been positive. This is one of the best free word games.

          DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY!

          Wordscapes

          Price: Play for free

Wordscapes is sort of a mixture of Boggle and crossword. Players get a combination of letters at the bottom of the screen and a crossword layout at the top. You slide your finger over the letters to form words that complete the crossword section. The goal is to find all matching words, not to search for every word. The game includes over 5000 puzzles (many with themes), simple mechanics and several different game modes. The game has some rather obnoxious ads, which makes it less user-friendly for free players. The rest of the experience is good.

          DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY!

Words With Friends 2 and other Zynga games

          Price: Play for free

Words With Friends 2 is Zynga's most popular word game. Plays mostly like Scrabble. You and the other player receive letters. You place them on the board to earn points. The player with the most points wins the game. This is a full online multiplayer mode, but you can play alone if you want. The game itself is top notch and looks good. You can remove ads, but it costs $10 for 30 days and we think it's terrible. The freemium aspects are also not very pleasant. Other than that, it's a winner. Zynga also has Crossword With Friends, Boggle With Friends, and Draw Something. All three are great free word games. You can also find the official Scrabble game on Google Play, but this one is better.

          DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY!

          Melimots Word Search

          Price: Free (with ads)

Word Search by Melimots is a simple word search game. With all these weird hybrids, we decided that a good, simple and free word search game would be a good addition. Plays the way you expect. Each word has its own highlight color and you can adjust the font size if you want it to be bigger or smaller. The game also keeps track of your highest scores if you want to see them later. Even the ads aren't that bad. The game has random crashes and random errors. However, it's hard to complain about the free game.

          DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY!

          Word Yard

          Price: Play Free

Word Yard is another simple word game, another mix of Boggle and crossword. You get a series of letters and complete the crossword above. The game has hundreds of levels that get more difficult as you progress. It also boasts no time limits, support for dozens of languages, full offline support, and more. The game is also suitable for children because many of the first puzzles are ridiculously easy. Those looking for a real challenge might not find this game challenging enough to suit their needs. However, it's not bad for a free word game.
