If you listen to music frequently, then you’re no doubt aware of the constant struggle to find new music to listen to. Sure, you may have long playlists of songs that you love, but when you want something fresh and new, it can be pretty difficult to find what you’re looking for.
Fortunately, you’re not alone in this problem.
There are a bunch of sites online that try to solve this problem. Here are four of the best.
First up on this list comes Chosic’s similar songs finder. If you’re looking for something intuitive yet surprisingly feature-rich, then Chosic is an excellent choice when it comes to finding new music. Chosic itself is actually a site dedicated to royalty-free music, but there are a bunch of other tools available on its website, with the similar songs finder being one of them.
Once you’re there, you’ll find a ton of different options on how to search for playlists. You can pick moods and genres to help you find new music, but Chosic’s biggest appeal here is with specific songs.
All you have to do is enter a song name into the search bar, and you’ll be good to go. If you've just downloaded one of the best music recognitions apps to accurately find songs by tune, then this is a great next step to find new music.
There are options here you can customize as well.
You can adjust the length of the playlist if you want something longer, and there are a series of sliders that determine which parts of the song you want to find similarities with, such as the vocals or the instrumentals. You don’t need to adjust these at first, however.
Instead, once you pick the song you want to find others like, Chosic will immediately create a playlist based on your choice. It’ll start with the song you’ve chosen and then move on from there.
You can play the playlist on both YouTube and on Spotify, and you can even tweak it if you don’t like what Chosic’s created. For example, you can adjust how it chooses similar songs through different categories such as energy, popularity, and more.
Next up, we have Tunebat. If you’re more musically inclined, then Tunebat may be the best option available out there to find new music. Tunebat is pretty straightforward and quite easy to pick up. All you have to do is input the name of your song and then choose the specific song that you’re thinking of from the list.
Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, Tunebat will give you a whole host of information on that song in particular. Some of it is somewhat arbitrary. For example, Tunebat gives out scores on a scale from zero to 100 for a variety of values such as happiness, danceability, and liveness.
It also gives more concrete values, such as the key the song is in, the BPM, duration, and Camelot values. The combination of both of these types of values is what Tunebat uses to give you other songs that are similar to the first. Initially, these are just songs that will mix well with the original. Songs with similar or complementary keys, BPM, and other values, for example.
Tunebat will also give recommendations that won’t exactly mix well with the original song, but are still similar. If you’re not doing anything particularly musical, such as mixing or remixing, then this may be the better place to find similar songs.
Same That Tune is a bit of a departure from some of the other entries on this list in that it isn’t an online service like many of the others, but rather a blog.
All the same, Same That Tune is a surprisingly insightful way to get a feel for similar music to what you’re listening to or know you already love.
Essentially, Same That Tune is a blog updated every week or so that shows off two songs that share some sort of impressive similarity. This could be vocal riffs that are suspiciously similar, chord progressions that are the same, and more.
The blog is partially powered by fan submissions, and you can often see discourse in the comments for any post, which can help you to find other songs that are similar to what you’re looking at.
You can search through the blog itself using its search bar, and can filter by genre or similarity through the drop-down menus at the top of the page.
If you’re looking for something very specific, then there may be better options on this list, but if you enjoy a range of music and are just casually browsing for something new to listen to, then this is a great resource.
Perhaps surprising to some of you, YouTube is the final entry onto this list.
Many think of YouTube as a place purely to watch videos, but there is a huge range of music available on this service as well. Just about any music video that is created nowadays gets uploaded there, and you’re able to find all sorts of niche songs as well.
The best way to find new music on YouTube, however, is just to listen to it. It can help, especially if you make a new account for this step, but will work regardless of whether you do or don’t.
YouTube will try to recommend you new videos to watch based on your viewing preferences. If you just listen to the type of music that you like or are hoping to find more like on a regular basis, then YouTube will begin to recommend you new songs or music based on what you’re listening to.
Alternatively, if you watch a lot of YouTube but can’t seem to find the type of music being featured in the videos that you like, you can always find out how to identify music and songs in YouTube videos. That way, you’ll be set, no matter what type of content appears on your YouTube feed.
