Jack and the Beanstalk Activity | Pop-Up Tree
Please welcome Curt, a former science teacher who’s sharing a pop-up tree activity today. I think it would be a perfect Jack and the Beanstalk activity for the kids. What do you think?
Table of Contents
what a fun Jack and the Beanstalk activity for kids!
Meet the Author
Curt Nelson is a former science teacher and school assembly presenter. Now he (and Bob the Dragon) make learning science fun at Make A Kidnection. Click the logo before for 3 free science activities here. What happens:
Your child takes a few old newspaper pages and turns them into a tree sculpture that grows three times its size, like magic.
The Introduction
Bob the Dragon and I shot a short puppet video introducing the Pop-Up Tree activity. Watch this with your kids. It will make them laugh and get them excited about trying the activity. Click here or on the graphic below:
What you’ll need:
I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.
- 5 Sheets of newspaper.
- Scissors
- 1 Rubber Band
How to make the Pop-Up Tree:
I’ll try to describe it, but the video shows a step-by-step demonstration, which I think is easier to follow.
- Take 5 large newspaper sheets (the ones that are like 2 pages folded over). Start rolling the first sheet. When you get just a few inches from the end, feed the next sheet in.
- Repeat this process for all five sheets, until they’re all rolled together in one large tube. (*Note: The “tree” stays together better if you put a rubber band around the middle of the tube at this point. I forgot to show that in the video! Good thing you’re reading the Fun-A-Day blog!)
- Then use the scissors to cut the newspaper roll about a third of the length of the roll.
- Turn the roll and make 2 more cuts, each about a third of the way around the roll.
- Hold the roll with one hand and reach into the center with the other hand. Gently pull up on the newspaper inside the tube. Gradually work each layer out to make the tree grow. Don’t pull any layer too far or the tree will get “floppy.”
- To make a sturdier, less floppy tree, use wrapping paper instead of newspaper. Wrapping paper trees will stand up to more “play time” than newspaper trees. Then again, making the trees is half the fun.
The Bonus Fun
Then, to reward your kids for doing such a great job during the experiment (and to remind them that science is fun!), show your kids the bonus video featuring Bob the Dragon: Bob’s Greatest Animal Jokes. Just click the link or the image below and tell me where to send the free video.
Well, would this pop-up tree work as a Jack and the Beanstalk activity with your kids/students? I think painting the paper green beforehand, or painting the tree after, would make it look even more like a beanstalk!

He looked like such a nice boy.
And he was, the real truth, even with all the trouble he caused. They are always so nice: I have never tasted a bad boy. Oh, I know some people don't care how crispy they get, I know that, and some people complain about the salty aftertaste. But you can always polish your dinner with a couple of kegs of ale, and it won't do any harm, I tell you. No, I really like boys. Always liked.
The funny thing is that poor Harvey didn't like them, never really liked them. Oh, he could eat one there, one there, if we were invited to someone for dinner; I mean, we're supposed to be polite, right? But really, no, he didn’t like them ... he was perfectly happy if he got a couple of cows for dinner, a couple of horses and a lamb according to my mother’s recipe - that’s what he liked. But all this was not so easy to cook, because, after all, cows and horses do not wander into your kitchen on their own, do they? What I'm saying is that you need to go out and catch them and then bring them home. With people, everything is completely different - do you feel what I'm leading to?
It's funny, but almost everyone thought that the boy was Jack, that was his name, I got all their names mixed up in my head, - well, almost everyone thought that Jack was the first one who climbed up to us. In truth, we would hardly have been able to get rid of them. When they saw a beanstalk, they just started climbing it. I think it's in their blood, like cats, climbing curtains. In fact, they ended up here at any time of the year, and what else could you do with them, how not to eat? I told Harvey, I don't know how many times I warned him to trim the beanstalk so it wouldn't be so visible. But you know these men, they procrastinate and procrastinate, and then they say that you saw them. Now I'm thinking, what would have happened if I hadn't stopped grumbling at him? Oh no, I shouldn't complain.
Down there, they tell a story about magic beans and how a sly peddler traded a cow, or something like that. But this is all nonsense. In fact, the cow was wandering around unattached - and whose fault was it, I ask you? — and Harvey brought her home to serve me for breakfast in bed. Surely this boy followed her footsteps all the way to the beanstalk and maybe saw her legs or something disappear into the sky. Anyway, he followed right behind her and ended up in my kitchen, because that's where Harvey directed the beanstalk to grow. That was smart, don't you think?
Then, as usual, I scattered various spices like rosemary, cumin, salt and pepper and basil around this hole in the floor - so they appear already prepared right away, and you can just pick them up and throw them on the grill. But this Jack, God have mercy, he was so quick! To corner him, I had to run after him with a broom all over the kitchen, can you believe it? And then - now I'm sure you won't believe it - the cute boy looked at me, as calmly as you look at me, put his little hands on his hips and said:0003
- Where is my cow, thief giantess? Give me back the cow!
Well, not impudent? I'm asking you!
- I ate your cow for breakfast, - I answered, - and she was quite tough, I must say. And we'll eat you for lunch as a snack, so behave yourself!
But everything was like water off a duck's back to him. However, who would want to eat such an impudent and harmful bird?
In general, this Jack, he addressed me, stubborn as a ram:
- How about chicken? The one that lays golden eggs? I think it'll be a fair exchange since you took my cow.
- Golden eggs? I asked. — Golden eggs? Who told you such nonsense? “What do they down there, they just don’t believe in!” And I continued, “Why would Harvey and I need eggs that can’t be broken?” Now jump on the bars and don't argue with me!
I've already started to have a headache - you know what I mean. I think it's all about their voices. So shrill that it just rings in your ears, but what do they care? You can only hope that they will shut up.
— Well, then what about the harp? - still impudently began to bargain Jack. “I know all about the singing harp and the fact that it talks and can predict the future. Give it to me and I'll go and we'll forget about all this.

Up the beanstalk
Everyone knows and loves fairy tales - well, or at least loved them in childhood. And everyone especially likes fairy tales about those who, being savvy, got rich thanks to some magical items. After all, it is very similar to playing in a casino. Each spin of the reels in the slot machine can bring a magical coveted prize.
Online casino software developers know this well. Therefore, the theme of fairy tales is so often used in the design and design of slot machines. Jack and the Beanstalk, that is, Jack and the Beanstalk, occupies an important place among all the slot machines on a similar theme.
Surely everyone remembers this folk English fairy tale very well. But if not, we will briefly recall. The boy Jack goes to the market, forced to sell a cow. On his way, he meets a wanderer who offers to exchange a cow for beans, supposedly magical. The boy's mother was very unhappy and threw the beans away, but in the morning they sprouted - the stem stretched to the sky.
The guy goes up into the sky and there he finds an area inhabited by not particularly friendly giants. However, one of them has something magical - a goose that lays golden eggs! Jack steals the goose, and when the giant starts after him, he simply cuts the stem and the giant falls from the sky.
