- What is the densitometry Bone ...
Since there may be no obvious signs or symptoms of osteoporosis, you may not even suspect that that your bones are losing mass. The best way to confirm or rule out osteoporosis is a method called DRA - dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (bone tissue densitometry).
Densitometry (DDA) is a quick, painless test to measure bone density loss.
The lower spine, hip joint, and forearm are the areas where densitometry is most commonly performed.
The DXA unit uses two energy streams to scan the bones with thin, invisible x-rays at a low dose of radiation to measure bone mineral density. The radiation exposure on a single X-ray bone densitometer study corresponds to the radiation exposure received from the sun on a bright sunny day and is less than one tenth of the dose of a standard chest x-ray. nine0003
How reliable and accurate is this test?
Densitometry (DDA) is currently the only WHO (World Health Organization) recognized measurement method for diagnosing osteoporosis and can diagnose even minimal bone loss (2-5%).
How to prepare for densitometry?
Eat as usual, but stop taking calcium supplements at least 24 hours before the test.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, belts or buttons.
If you have recently had a barium test or computed tomography (CT) with contrast agent or a radioisotope scan, tell us; you may have to wait a few days before having the DXA test.
If there is the slightest possibility that you are pregnant, report it.
How is the examination carried out?
Densitometry takes 1 to 10 minutes, depending on the parts of the body being examined. You will need to lie down on a table upholstered with soft material, under which the radiation source is located. There is a sensor above the table. nine0003
Doctors usually look for bone loss in the spine and hip, where most osteoporosis-related fractures occur. When examining the spine, your legs will be placed on a soft platform so that the pelvis and lower spine lie flat on the table.
For a hip exam, the Physician's Assistant will place your foot in a holder that rotates your hip inward. In both cases, the sensor will slowly move over the body area, projecting images onto the computer screen. nine0003
What will you experience during the densitometry?
Bone densitometry (BDA) is a simple, non-invasive examination.
During the examination, you should try to remain still so that the image is clear.
The examination is painless and the radiation dose is very low.
What is a T-score and how is osteoporosis diagnosed?
One of the main results of bone densitometry is the so-called "T-criterion"
This score is obtained by comparing your bone density with the bone density of a healthy young adult of the same sex.
