Literally from the date of the invention of the tapestry is considered luxurious and expensive After all, it was not without reason that even in the Middle Ages, with the help of this material, wealthy people trimmed furniture and created decorations for castles and palaces. In ancient times, tapestries were made by hand. It was a long and painstaking work, as a result of which chic woven paintings, called tapestries, were obtained. Although tapestry fabrics have undergone some changes during their existence, they remain loved and in demand by both designers and ordinary people.
The history of the tapestry
Decorative espalier, or tapestry, has been known to mankind for hundreds of years. Clothing made from this material was found in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. The ancient Greeks decorated their dwellings with woven carpets depicting gods and mythical heroes, while Peruvian craftsmen wove burial shrouds.
All works on the production of carpets with various themes were carried out by hand. At the same time, woolen and silk threads were cross-woven, and in special cases, fibers of pure gold or silver were woven into the fabric.
Making a tapestry is a laborious task that requires an incredible amount of time and patience from the weaver. In a year, one master could weave a carpet measuring 1.5 x 1.5 m, so the cost of such products was incredibly high, and only wealthy people could use tapestry fabric.
At the end of the 17th century, this delightful fabric began to be produced by the French manufactory Gobelin, at the same time the modern name "tapestry" appeared. In Russia, the first tapestry factory appeared under Peter I, and only French craftsmen worked there.
Experts say that exactly those fabrics that are made at the manufactory in Paris can bear such a name, and all the rest should be called tapestries. However, at present, this term refers to any woven fabric.
Material features
After the Frenchman Joseph Jacquard invented the loom to make complex patterned fabrics in the early 18th century, a new era began for tapestries. Now this luxurious exquisite fabric began to be produced in large quantities.
Nowadays, tapestry fabric is made by jacquard weaving. If the production of an ordinary jacquard fabric requires 2-3 threads, then more than ten fibers of different colors and textures will be needed to produce woven patterns.
In tapestry weft and warp must meet certain requirements, only then the picture will look natural. The weft threads must be elastic, and the warps must be very strong.
The most commonly used materials for the production of tapestries are:
- Sheep wool is a strong natural fiber that can be easily dyed any color;
- linen, cotton - allow you to make light breathable materials;
- silk - natural fibers that give the product elegance and noble shine;
- synthetic threads;
- threads with the addition of metal (lurex).
Tapestries usually feature paintings by famous artists, floral arrangements or landscapes. Recently, new technologies have appeared that allow even photographs to be transferred to fabric.
Advantages and disadvantages of tapestry fabric
The advantages of tapestry fabrics are due to the properties of the threads used in the creation of matter, and the features of the jacquard weave.
- The fabric has a high density, excellent shape retention, wear resistance.
- Keeps colors for a long time - does not shed or fade in the sun.
- Has antistatic properties - does not attract dust and small debris, does not accumulate static electricity.
- A huge variety of artistic compositions and textures provides a wide application in many areas of human life.
- Low maintenance - special treatment protects products from contamination.
The disadvantages include the following qualities of the fabric:
- increased rigidity and significant weight of the material do not allow sewing clothes from it;
- products must not be washed or ironed, otherwise folds and creases may appear.
Although there are some drawbacks to matter, tapestries are popular and sought-after fabrics that cheer up, fill the house with joy and beauty.
Types of tapestry
There are many types of tapestry. Pictures and tablecloths, napkins and pillowcases on sofa cushions, furniture upholstery, handbags, belts, gloves and even shoes are made from tapestry.
Woven pattern should fit the overall design of the room and subtly convey the mood of the owner and the atmosphere in the house.
Here are some common themes often chosen by tapestry lovers.
- Oriental style. The original and unique plot, full of philosophy and tranquility, distinguishes paintings created in oriental style. Images of people taming wild animals will harmoniously fit into the interior.
- Country. For those who love and appreciate antiques, we have developed tapestry plots that take you back to the past. Such paintings go well with a fireplace and earthenware, rare books and homemade rugs.
- Scandinavian style. Naturalness and simplicity distinguishes this type of tapestry. To decorate a room in a Scandinavian style, paintings in light colors are more suitable: grayish, blue, light turquoise.
- Provence. Tapestries in the Provence style are associated with the sea and the sun. Magnificent flowers, beautiful houses on the river or sea coast remind of summer holidays. Such canvases are often made from coarse cotton or bleached linen.
How to choose a real tapestry
Today everyone can afford tapestries. In order for them to really become a decoration of the home and attract the eyes of the owner and guests for a long time, the materials must be of high quality.
When choosing items from tapestry fabric, the following points should be considered.
- It is better to buy tapestries in specialized stores, where the seller probably has a quality certificate for the product.
- The color and texture of the chosen item should match the overall design of the room, furniture and curtains as best as possible.
- The woven picture must be of such dimensions that it can be seen in its entirety.
- A neat, smooth back and a frame supplied with the picture indicate that the tapestry is of high quality.
- The drawing must be clear and bright, with a well-visible composition.
The tapestry in the house is always a strong visual symbol that can set the mood and shape the image of the owner. Therefore, the choice of a woven picture should be approached as competently as the purchase of furniture or clothes.
Tapestry fabric care
Tapestry fabric has a rough surface, on the ribs of which dust accumulates very quickly. If you do not attach importance to this, then the product will soon be covered with a gray coating and its appearance will be spoiled. In addition, coffee or orange juice can be spilled on furniture, a tablecloth or a pillowcase made of tapestry fabric, and then the product will definitely have to be washed or cleaned. Manufacturers claim that trellises are durable, but this is only true if they are properly cared for.
- Dust can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or a clothes brush. At the end of cleaning, it is advisable to walk on the surface of the material with a damp sponge so that the thing takes on a fresh look.
- If there is a stain from food or street dirt, the product should be washed. A soft sponge or piece of cloth is moistened in a soapy solution and dirt is rubbed off with light stroking movements. You can dry the product outside, in a sunny place with good air circulation.
- Ironing of this material is not recommended. In extreme cases, ironing from the wrong side is allowed with an iron heated to no more than 150 ° C.
- Tapestry should not be machine washed. If you need to wash a tablecloth or pillowcase, it is better to do the work by hand with gentle detergents.
- Use only special gels and powders for washing and cleaning tapestry. Moreover, before processing the product on the wrong side, you need to check whether the selected agent has a negative effect on the material.
- Woven pictures are best hidden from direct sunlight. Otherwise, the tapestry may crack, saturated colors fade and the picture will take on a grayish tint.
Important!
When buying paintings or other things from a tapestry, you should carefully study the manufacturer's recommendations left on the product label, and, if possible, follow them. Then the items will retain their original appearance for a long time.
Tapestry fabrics are a luxurious dense material. They are always fresh, attractive and never go out of style. A huge variety of models and a magnificent view make this material indispensable for the design of premium premises. Despite the fact that modern materials are protected from dirt by special impregnations, they require careful handling and delicate care.

What is the secret of the Lady with the Unicorn? How is Charles Dickens related to the Bayeux tapestry? And why did the Pre-Raphaelite William Morris decide to study the traditions of medieval weaving at the end of the 19th century? We talk about what tapestries are and how to understand them
Prepared by Dilshat Harman
Carpet, trellis, tapestry - how do these concepts differ? Carpet - any woven product that is hung on a wall or laid on a floor or table. A trellis is a lint-free carpet that hangs on a wall. A tapestry is a tapestry produced by the so-called Tapestry Manufactory, founded in 1443 by Jean and Philibert Gobelins. Thus, every tapestry is a carpet, but not every carpet is a tapestry. Silk or woolen wall hangings, very expensive and difficult to produce, since ancient times have emphasized the wealth and high status of their owner - whether it be a church or state authority, a nobleman or a merchant. In addition, wall panels adorned the walls of cathedrals, palaces, castles, town halls and just houses, pleasing to the eye and making the room warmer. We talk about five outstanding tapestries from different eras and advise you to go to the exhibition “Woven Splendor. Tapestries of the 16th–17th centuries” in the Moscow fund In Artibus.
1Hestia Carpet
Hestia Carpet. 6th century Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and CollectionHand weaving was already known in the 7th millennium BC. The Pazyryk carpet found in Altai is considered the oldest of the pile carpets known to us: it dates back to the 5th century BC. By comparison, the Hestia carpet, created in the 6th century in Egypt, seems quite new.
At that time, Greeks lived in Egypt, as well as Jews, Syrians, Copts and other peoples who were influenced by Greek culture and knew Greek: it is no coincidence that all the inscriptions on the wool panel are made in this language. The goddess of the hearth is depicted in the center: under the image, the inscription “Hestia, the giver of blessings” is visible. In the hands of the goddess, pomegranates are a symbol of these blessings. Her headdress and earrings are also in the shape of a pomegranate. Next to Hestia are two maids and six angels who hold disks with the words "joy", "a lot of delicious food and drink", "prosperity", "wealth", "blessing", "virtue" in their hands.
By the time the carpet was created, Christianity had long been the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, but no one forgot the old gods. Apparently, the Hestia carpet was a gift that the first owners hung on the wall in their house like an icon. Christians also had such woven icons - for example, the carpets of the Mother of God and the Twelve Apostles, created in the same 6th century in Egypt.

In fact, this embroidery on linen, sometimes called the Bayenne tapestry, is neither a carpet, nor a tapestry, much less a tapestry. Nevertheless, traditionally it is called that way and is used as a wall decoration. This embroidery is unusually long - almost 70 meters in length (and a little more than 50 cm in width). An extended woven frieze tells the story of the Norman conquest of England in 1066-1072. In total, the panel depicts 70 scenes, in which 623 people participate, and if serious military events take place in the central part of the canvas, then above and below the tapestry from Bayeux is decorated with figures of animals, birds and funny little men.
Obviously, such a monumental work could only be created by order of a wealthy and possessive patron, but his name is still unknown to researchers. According to one version, this is Queen Matilda (c. 1031 - 1083) - the wife of William I the Conqueror, according to another - Bishop Odo of Bayeux (c. 1036 - 1097), an associate of William. It is also unclear where the panel was made - in England or in France - and for what room it was intended.
In 1729, the Benedictine scholar Bernard de Montfaucon published in his multi-volume work Monuments of the French Monarchy Constituting the History of France, the first scientific description of the embroidery, which was annually exhibited in the local cathedral.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the French confiscated the panel: as propaganda for the Napoleonic plan to invade England, they decided to hang the tapestry in the Louvre. But the plan never came true. The panel returned to Bayeux and was hung in the city hall, where in 1867 many tourists, including Charles Dickens, could see it. However, the famous English writer was not impressed and called the embroidery an amateur and very weak work. Today, the tapestry is displayed in the Bayeux Tapestry Museum specially created for it and is considered one of the main examples of Norman Romanesque art. The embroidery has been preserved almost entirely, and this is certainly a miracle.

Tapestry "According to my only desire" from the series "Lady with a Unicorn". Late 15th century Musée de Cluny
Tapestry flourished in the late Middle Ages. At the end of the 15th - 16th centuries, Flanders became the center of production. It was there on cardboard Cardboard - a life-size sketch of the future carpet. French artists created this cycle of six tapestries with a plain background dotted with flowers. This type of carpets with the image of many flowers and figures of people, animals and birds on a blue or dark pink background is called millefleurs - from the French mille-fleurs ("a thousand flowers").
The five tapestries of the cycle are dedicated to the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. On the sixth is the mysterious inscription "À mon seul désir", that is, "According to my only desire." There is a lady on each tapestry, on both sides of her there is a lion and a unicorn. Thanks to the coats of arms depicted on the tapestry, it was possible to establish that the customer of the cycle was Antoine II Le Vista, a nobleman who served three French kings - Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francis I. We do not know what happened to the tapestries between the 16th and 19th centuries, but it is known that in 1841 the chief inspector of historical monuments of France and part-time famous writer Prosper Mérimée discovered them in the castle of Boussac in a rather deplorable state. However, neither he nor George Sand, who described these tapestries in the novel "Jeanne", could do anything to save the tapestry, which continued to grow mold on the damp walls of the old castle. Only in 1863 was it possible to transport the cycle to Paris and begin restoration.
Graceful trellises play on the story known throughout the Middle Ages that a wild unicorn can only be tamed by a virgin, to whom he comes himself and obediently lays his head on his knees. Both the unicorn and the lion appear here as almost domestic, tamed animals. So a person must tame his passions and defeat the animal nature in himself. "Lady with a Unicorn" is the brightest work of art of the 15th century. Its addressees were not clerics and not the general public, but courtiers immersed in secular life, full of riddles, puzzles and allusions. It is no coincidence that researchers still cannot unravel the meaning of the sixth panel with a strange inscription. Perhaps this meant the sixth sense of understanding, which the theologian Jean Gerson (1363-1429) spoke about in his sermons.), or the denial of the passions that all feelings lead to in the other five panels. In addition, it is not clear whether the lady takes off the necklace or puts it on, surrenders to passions or rejects them, but the symbolic meaning of the panel depends on this.

Charles Lebrun. Capture of the city of Lille. Tapestry from the series "The History of the King". 1676 Collection du Mobilier national
In the 17th century, the center of tapestry production moved from Flanders to France. In 1662, a tapestry manufactory was founded in Paris: one of the main customers was King Louis XIV himself. Particularly popular were carpets depicting mythological, allegorical and historical scenes, lush and bright. They corresponded both to the general direction of Baroque art and to the mood that prevailed at the French court of that time.
At some point, the Minister of Finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert, known among other things for Alexandre Dumas's novel "Vicomte de Bragelonne", and the artist Charles Lebrun, who was also the director of the Gobelin Manufactory, decided to capture events from the life of not Constantine or Charlemagne on tapestries , and now a living monarch. This is how a cycle of 14 tapestries appeared, collectively known as The History of the King. The cycle begins with the "Coronation of Louis XIV" and ends with the siege of the city of Dole. However, the panel depicts only military and diplomatic events: one of the espaliers depicts a visit by Louis to the Gobelin manufactory in Paris on October 15, 1667.
The date of the visit was not chosen by chance: it was in 1667 that the Gobelin Brothers Manufactory was transformed by Colbert into the Royal Tapestry and Furniture Manufactory. Not only tapestries were produced there, but also a variety of luxury items that were supplied to the court and were not available to ordinary Frenchmen. By including a plot with a visit by the king to the manufactory in the cycle, the authors made the production of tapestries part of the history of France.
On the tapestries of this cycle, the main scenes are placed in lush floral borders, similar to picture frames. In the era of classicism, a certain hierarchy is built among the painting genres and types of art: historical painting is higher than still life, and architecture is more important than arts and crafts. Therefore, tapestries are more and more reminiscent of paintings - more valuable than examples of arts and crafts.
5William Morris. Adoration of the Magi
Tapestry Adoration of the Magi by William Morris & Co. 1890 State Hermitage MuseumWilliam Morris, the author of the cardboard for this tapestry, was one of the most prominent Pre-Raphaelites The Pre-Raphaelite movement is a trend in English poetry and painting of the second half of the 19th century. In 1848, the artists Dante Rossetti, John Everett Millais and Holman Hunt founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The purpose of the members of the society was to fight against the conventions of the Victorian era, academic traditions and the senseless imitation of classical models. Artist, poet, founder of the Kelmscott Press and co-founder of the famous Arts and Crafts Movement, Morris did everything possible and impossible to revive the art of medieval tapestry.
A boy from a wealthy Essex family (his father was in finance), in 1852 he went to study at Oxford. There he met Edward Burne-Jones, John Ruskin and other enthusiasts of medieval history and art. Soon, instead of pursuing an academic career, he began to study the secrets of hand weaving, mixing dyes for yarn, drawing ornaments and cardboard for the tapestry of the firm he founded, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.
In 1886, John Lightfoot, Provost of Exeter College, Oxford, invited his former students William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones to design designs for a tapestry that would decorate the college's chapel. They gladly agreed, and in 1887 Burne-Jones painted a watercolor sketch entitled "Star of Bethlehem". According to the sketch, cardboard was made in full size. Morris and John Dearle changed some color combinations and added flowers and background details, after which three weavers got to work. In 189By the year 0, the tapestry was finished, but Lightfoot had already died by that time.
Morris admired medieval tapestries, and his Adoration of the Magi was a declaration of the revival of a medieval craft lost in the technological revolution. After the first order for Exeter College, nine repetitions of the tapestry were woven in Morris' workshop. Among the customers were the English poet Wilfrid Blunt, the University of Manchester, Eton College, the Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts. The tapestry, which can be seen today at the exhibition in the Hermitage, was ordered at 1902 by the collector Sergei Shchukin and until 1917 was in his Moscow mansion. In the 1940s, after the Museum of New Western Art was closed, she entered the Hermitage.
The plot of the adoration of the Magi is often found in late Gothic espalier weaving. Like the tapestries created in the late Middle Ages, the work of Morris and Burne-Jones is full of symbols. We see Joseph meeting the Magi. At his feet lies an ax - a symbol of his profession, the profession of a carpenter. Nearby is the Virgin Mary with the baby and the Archangel Gabriel in clothes woven with gold and silver threads. This fabric is very similar to European fabrics of the 14th century, depicting winged sphinxes in the radiance of outstretched wings.
Here are the magi. Kaspar in loose clothes hinting at his Eastern origin. Knight Melchior is a middle-aged European whose image is reminiscent of the Crusades. African Balthasar in a hood, the edge of which is embroidered with the image of a cut down branch that has sprouted (a symbol of dormition and resurrection). Around the figures are many other symbolic images. The rose bush behind Joseph and the goldfinches on the branches symbolize the Virgin Mary. Under the feet of the heroes is a carpet of flowers: anemones mean suffering, red droplets on them are the blood of Christ and the martyrs who suffered for the faith. Calendula is an aphrodisiac, tulips are the frailty of earthly beauty, blue daffodil is the purity and majesty of the Virgin Mary, violet and iris are also symbols of the Mother of God, red carnation is the blood of Christ and a symbol of courage. In the center at the feet of the archangel we see a crown surrounded by flowers: this is a prediction and a hint that in the future Mary will ascend to heaven and be crowned.
Arzamas thanks Tatyana Lekhovich for her help in preparing the material.
