One look at WILD THING’s spinnaker emblazoned with a cartoon monster from the iconic children’s picture book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and one knows immediately where the name came from and what this boat is all about: adventure and making memories with family and friends. Indeed, the owners of over twenty years have raised a family of three girls - with grandchildren now in their mix - aboard WILD THING primarily along the US east coast and throughout the Caribbean but also in Europe. The yacht has been central to this family’s life for decades and has truly been a spectacular platform for adventures for the young and young at heart.

The versatile guest cabin layout aboard WILD THING is ideally suited for family usage and for two couple’s while also allowing for separate accommodation for one to two full-time crew as desired. The yacht is large enough to provide plenty of ‘wiggle’ room with several separate and private spaces with sunbathing areas both forward and aft; a large aft deck with matching deck chairs for cocktails/quiet reading/fishing/cookouts; an incredibly comfortable, secure and ergonomic cockpit with walk-throughs on each side and a salon you would expect to find on a superyacht complete with a huge Nav station- perfect for today’s remote work environment.

WILD THING is one of the newest and latest Ted Hood-designed Little Harbors built in the United States in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She combines three double cabins plus crew’s quarters in a spacious, traditionally-styled offshore yacht designed and equipped for long-distance cruising AND gunkholing in shallow waters- accomplished by her large centerboard with variable draft.

The interior of a Little Harbor is something to behold: fixed hull ports (long before they became the norm), numerous stainless opening ports and hatches combine with warm cherry joinery and teak and holly soles for a singular effect that will take your breath away. The light and ventilation throughout the interior is awesome and come nightfall with all the lights on below the look changes and continues to enchant. WILD THING is truly an iconic and welcoming yacht which with continued good care will continue to wow generations to come.

Arguably one of the finest bespoke yachts in this class afloat today, and fresh out of the paint booth at The Hinckley Company with new topsides Flag Blue Awlgrip, she is literally sparkling after a second winter of refitting with Hinckley.

We invite your careful reading of this detailed listing and ultimately inspection of this fine yacht and sailing machine. which is set up for shorthanded sailing and maneuvering with bow thruster and variable pitch Hundestadt propeller.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND LAYOUT

Sleeps eight in four cabins, including two spacious forward cabins and a magnificent owner's stateroom aft. They are individually decorated and furnished, with an abundance of storage space. A separate crew cabin and head enhances the feeling of privacy.

Deck access to the forepeak is provided by way of an oversized deck hatch. The forepeak contains the anchor chain locker, as well as storage for fenders, dock lines, spinnaker and spares, and is separated from the living spaces by a watertight collision bulkhead with a Freeman Collision door. Aft of this bulkhead is a roomy head and washbasin to port with a generous shower area opposite to starboard, shared by both forward guest cabins. The washing machine is located on the starboard side of this head.

The guest cabin to port has an upper and lower berth. The cabin to starboard has a lower double berth. Both cabins are quite large with generous hanging lockers and more than ample storage areas. These cabins are well ventilated and lit with deck hatches, opening portholes and hull ports. A specially-designed chart drawer is located under the starboard berth for world-wide chart portfolios.

The main saloon is located amidships and takes full advantage of WILD THING'S beam of almost 19 feet. A huge U-shaped settee to port seats six around a unique cherry table with maple border that folds along its length. There is a rather unique navigation/office area opposite in the forward starboard corner to provide a separate office area that, with a quick turn on the grand leather chair, can become part of the main saloon activity. Further aft to starboard is a settee that can be used as an overflow sea berth. There is a liquor cabinet located below the TV/entertainment center that is hidden by cherry cabinetry when not in use. The fixed hull windows – a Little Harbor trademark – add to the light and open feel below.

The double crew cabin is aft of the main saloon to starboard, entered through a day head. This cabin is located near the engine room for instant access. The day head also contains a shower and a large storage locker.

The very spacious galley is aft to port with all the accoutrements expected on a yacht of this quality. Features include:

  • Corian countertops with inlays
  • Double sink with pressure fresh water and macerator drain system
  • Instant hot water system
  • Force 10 four-burner propane stove with oven and broiler
  • GE microwave oven
  • Grunert 120 volt refrigerator/freezer with vertical access doors for refrigerator
  • Raritan icemaker
  • Custom beveled glass-fronted cabinets with custom storage racks
  • Full galleyware – dishes, utensils, glasses etc.

The owner's full-width aft cabin will not disappoint. Featuring an L-shaped settee to port with a queen off-center berth to starboard. Opposite the berth is a marble top vanity with inset sink and beveled wraparound mirror. There are his-and-hers hanging lockers, numerous drawers and storage lockers and a private head and generous separate stall shower.

Aft of the owner's cabin is an oversized lazarette containing the life raft, a passarelle, spare parts, and four scuba tanks. Two smaller aft lazarettes contain two propane bottles, PFDs and snorkel equipment. All three aft lazarettes are accessible via flush Rondal locking hatches on the aft deck.

FINISH DETAILS

The interior of WILD THING is beautifully crafted with satin-finished American cherry joinery with custom raised panel cabinetry and gloss highlights. The cabin sole is gloss-varnished teak and holly with stainless recessed latches. All exposed hull surfaces are lined with solid cherry ceiling strips. The overhead is divided into removable sections covered with off-white leather with hatch screens and blinds that conveniently slide away when not in use.

Hanging lockers are lined with western red cedar. All other lockers above level are lined with cherry or Formica trimmed in cherry. All wiring and plumbing in these lockers completely hidden from view by removable panels.

All heads have granite countertops and marble shower floors. surfaces in the heads are bright white with teak trim. Berth and seat tops are Formica-lined, with access to storage below through multiple lift-up openings. There are separate removable floorboards for access to tank tops, seacocks and machinery. All water and fuel tanks are below floor level, leaving volume under settees and seating for extensive storage throughout the vessel.

DECK AND HULL

HULL CONSTRUCTION: Built in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, to American Bureau of Shipping standards, with +A1Yachting Service Classification. The hull is molded in FRP using E-glass, and Kevlar from female molds with 3/4" Airex foam core for added strength and sound/thermal insulation. Vinylester resin is used throughout for the highest possible resistance to water osmosis, plus epoxy bottom coating with Interlux 2000 system. Airex core material eliminated in areas of shearline, centerline, ballast, rudder post, hull ports and thru-hulls with solid FRP lay-up in these areas. Fore and aft stringers are glassed to the inside hull for added stiffness and in keeping with ABS standard. There is a molded FRP rubrail with stainless steel striker for protection to the hull in docking situations. Hull color is Flag Blue Awlgrip (2022) with single white boot stripe, gold cove stripe and green bottom. Deck color is Matterhorn White Awlgrip with white non-skid.

DECK CONSTRUCTION: The deck is one-piece molded FRP with Divinycell H-100 foam core for strength and stiffness. In areas where deck equipment is installed, core is replaced with Divinycell H-200 high-density foam. Outer skin is built to 1/4" thickness, inner skin to 3/16" using Vinylester resin. Deck flange is solid glass, approximately 9/16" thickness. The deck is bonded and bolted down with 3M5200 to the inboard angled hull flange with 5/16" bolts on 8" centers. Additional fastenings provided with teak toe rail thru-bolted on 8" centers. Decks and cockpit sole are hand-laid teak. All deck hatch landings are molded in FRP. There are three flush Rondal lazarette hatches with molded drain channels. The propane locker is molded separately and ventilated with direct drain overboard.

CENTERBOARD: The centerboard is two-part female molded FRP with a protective shoe on leading edge and solid FRP around pin area. The centerboard has a highly efficient foil shape and is filled with structural putty and lead ballast to provide negative buoyancy. hoist is via wire to rope pennant to winch on deck, with draft increased to 13’ – 8” when lowered for enhanced upwind performance. Full centerboard removal and service performed Spring 2022.

RUDDER: The balanced spade rudder is two-part female molded FRP with 5" S/S rudder stock. Rudder blade molded around S/S frame welded to rudder stock. Rudder stock supported by upper bearing (Harken) and lower Duromax bearing. A bronze stuffing box is provided with graphite impregnated packing. The emergency tiller can be deck stepped in a matter of seconds. Full rudder service including removal performed Spring 2022.

BALLAST: All ballast is lead cast in place and fully encapsulated by the fiberglass hull and keel. The lead is covered with approximately 1/2" solid FRP.

OTHER: Primary bulkheads are fiberglass cored, reinforced with FRP in areas of chainplates. All structural bulkheads bonded to the hull and deck with FRP and Airex foam spacers. Floor beams are extruded FRP, interlocked and bonded to hull for rigid and durable support of cabin sole. FRP fuel and water tanks integral to the hull for additional stiffness to hull laminate and to use the maximum amount of volume available. All tanks fully baffled with ample inspection ports. The water tanks are coated with clear Gelcoat. Corrosion-resistant resin used in fuel tank construction and FDA-approved resin in two water tanks.

COCKPIT FEATURES: Truly second to none. The size, layout, comfort and ergonomics of the cockpit designed by Ted Hood on WILD THING have simply never been better executed. The main cockpit is large and functional, designed for easy egress each side without climbing over coamings. A signature feature of Little Harbors are built-in teak lockers for storage of rope tails and ephemera (handheld VHF, sunscreen, on-watch snacks...) outside of the cockpit as part of teak seat backs with handrails cleverly incorporated. All sail handling functions and electronic functions are located within easy reach of the helmsman, enabling one person to operate the boat FROM THE HELM.

A permanent hard dodger (fixed windows replaced 2022)- perhaps THE singular design feature on WILD THING - is located forward for protection from the weather. The hard dodger has a forward-facing opening window and a sliding ‘moon roof’ to provide excellent ventilation and head room. There is also a convertible cockpit bimini with side curtains.

A custom-designed molded FRP steering pedestal houses all engine instrumentation, sail handling functions and sailing instruments for easy access by helmsman, as are all deck winches. The stainless destroyer wheel is sheathed in teak; a nice custom touch. And last but not least, a substantial solid teak table with drop leaves is installed ahead of the pedestal and includes built-in storage with access from a clever top-opening lid.

DECK SPACES AND DETAILS

The flush aft deck is ample with a dedicated sun bathing ‘nook’ and further aft two chairs on stainless pedestals providing secure and comfortable seating as another intimate space for two for cocktails, breakfast or even delving into a great book day or night with a dedicated ‘reading lamp’. The barbecue grill on the aft pulpit rounds out the picture, suggesting another great way to use this area of the boat.

A second and large sunbathing area is provided on the foredeck forward of the mast and one must not forget to mention the teak seat built into the bow pulpit; an exhilarating place to sit when the boat is underway and sailing.

top-22 rating according to KP

PVC inflatable boat is the best way to penetrate the most hidden corners of nature. And if it is with a motor, then this is a symbol of an ideal holiday. It does not need a pier or a boat shed, it is easy to transport a non-inflated boat in the trunk of a car, but store it in a country house or garage.

The first inflatable boat to gain worldwide fame was Alain Bombard's "Heretic", a life raft in which a French doctor crossed the Atlantic Ocean to prove that shipwrecked victims could be rescued even without food or water.

Modern PVC fabrics bring this vehicle closer to the best examples of full size boats. Domestic fishermen and tourists do not need to prove anything to anyone, they are already firmly convinced of the quality of PVC inflatable boats.

How to choose a PVC boat for a motor

Before determining the dimensions, carrying capacity and other technical parameters of the boat, it is necessary to answer fundamental questions:

  • How often will the boat be used for its intended purpose?
  • How long and where will it be kept?
  • What is the method of transport: on a trailer, on the roof of a car or folded in the trunk? Is there enough space?
  • How many people will be fishing or moving from place to place at the same time?
  • On what water bodies and how far do you plan to walk? For example, for a quiet pond, a motor is not needed at all, and for sea fishing, not only a powerful engine is needed, but also a special hull design that protects against waves.

After answering the general questions, you can start choosing a specific model.

Expert Alexander Orishev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, author of the special course "Fundamentals of Fishing Tourism" at the Timiryazev Academy and a number of books on tourism, shared with KP readers the secrets of choosing a PVC boat for a motor and answered the most popular questions.

The boat is selected from the features of individual operation by a specific person, i.e. from his needs. For some anglers, a small boat with a mounted transom is enough, on which you can hang a 2-3 hp motor. Such motors are sometimes referred to as a motorcycle paddle. It is enough for someone to have an “egoist kit” - a boat up to 3 meters long with a 5 hp engine, which allows such a vessel to go in planing mode and overcome more or less significant distances.

For fishing together you need a boat with a length of 3 to 4 meters. We emphasize that manufacturers can position these boats as three or even five-seater. However, fishing with three, and even more so with four, is impossible in them. For fishing three of us need a boat over 4 meters.

Types of PVC boats for motors

According to their structure, motor boats are divided into boats with a slate , that is, with a hard plywood bottom, and boats with a low pressure inflatable bottom .

Rigid plywood bottom boats also called solder boats . They, in turn, are divided into punts , in which the bottom is a plywood slant-book, and into boats with collapsible payolas , fastened with stringers.

Punts are designed for use with a motor of no more than 8 hp, since such a boat under a more powerful motor becomes unstable when driving.

An inflatable keel is used for greater stability. It is used on boats with collapsible floorboards, which makes it possible to operate motors over 8 hp.

Recently, LPND (low pressure inflatable bottom) boats have been gaining popularity, and there is a debate among fishermen about which type of boat is better.

The main advantage of a solder boat is that it can be used standing up. Although the use of EVA mats with additional rigidity allows NDND boats to level this moment.

At the same time, the main advantage of the NDND boat is the speed of assembly, and the use of electric pumps allows you to assemble the boat in just a matter of minutes, while on the solder boats, the installation of the linings can take considerable time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to drive a motorboat?

If the boat engine power does not exceed 10.88 hp. and the weight of the kit is less than 200 kg, then a license is not needed.

What are the rules for boat and motor care?

General recommendations: Do not leave the boat in the sun out of the water, do not expose it to aggressive substances that can corrode the PVC sheet. In winter, it is undesirable to store the boat in a collapsed state.

Rules for caring for the engine: all gasoline must be drained from the carburetor before wintering. Some fishermen use the conservation of the outboard motor, that is, a special mixture is injected into the carburetor and the motor is allowed to work on it for several seconds. And it is desirable to spray the preservative on the surface of the motor. It is also important to check the oil in the gearbox for the presence of an emulsion and lubricate all rubbing parts of the motor with a special lubricant.

What PVC thickness is best for a boat?

Currently, boats mainly use 800-9 PVC00 g per sq.m. There are also PVC boats from 1500 g per sq.m., but this makes them very heavy. They are less afraid of friction, they can be safely dragged through the water, but such thickness does not save from punctures. And the price of such boats is much higher. To increase the strength of the boat, it seems more reasonable to carry out partial armoring of the bottom, that is, to paste over it with a special material.

What are the basic safety rules for powerboating?

Basic safety rule - do not board a boat while intoxicated . According to statistics, 90% of accidents occur when the passengers of the boat are in this form.

The second rule is to use life jacket .

The third rule is to use the engine only with the safety pin fastened to the boatmaster, which will allow you to turn off the engine if you fall out of the boat.

Now you know everything about motorized PVC boats and it will be easier to make the right choice. The amazing water expanses of our country will turn into a new facet and delight the soul with their beauty. No tail for you, no scales!

Tuning inflatable boats, kayaks for hiking

Let us consider in more detail the possible tuning and transformation of an inflatable boat for hiking.

Going on a boat trip is an idea that appeals to many, but sometimes the dream is shattered by real inconveniences and difficulties. Additional equipment will help prepare the kayak for a multi-day rafting. Tuning can be carried out in several directions at once.

Comfort

If “wild” tourism does not negate the very idea of comfort for you, and you are sure that communication with nature should not turn into a path of suffering and pain, you will like gadgets that will make your water trip more convenient:

  • Back padded stool for a kayak back - allows you to refuse from soft ammunition. Can be used as a night pillow.
  • Mounting rings of various shapes - for securing equipment or loads.
  • Oarlocks for an inflatable boat - for fastening a kayak oar, for swing oars, standard or remote. Not everyone can row with a kayak oar for a long time, and therefore, for long-distance kayaking river trips, it is recommended to get an alternative - more familiar swing oars.
  • High pressure bottom - an analogue of a hard floor. With it it is easier to move around the boat, it increases the safety of the craft, in addition, it can be used as an air mattress.

All offered additional equipment is easy to install by yourself.

Storage optimization

On a hike you need to take a maximum of things and place them in a minimum of space. Our suggestions for optimizing storage in an inflatable boat:

  • Lytros pouch with 2 or 3 pockets to keep your most valuable items safe.
  • Hanging holder - for things that need to be at hand, such as water bottles.
  • Elastic paddle holder or plastic paddle holders - so you don't have to worry about where to park your paddle or where to store your spare paddle.
  • Bag for a jar - sewn to your size, will accommodate a repair kit and other things necessary for a hike.
  • Grommet strips - for securing large loads.

When hiking on water, such a storage problem as getting food, documents, and equipment wet is also relevant. Her solution is a hermetic bag. TimeTrial offers airtight PVC bags of various sizes, incl. 40 l, 60 l, 130 l.

Other useful things to prepare an inflatable boat for a trip

So that the bottom of the boat does not turn into an accumulation of slippery dirt, instead of carpet, linoleum and other "innovations" offered by craftsmen, choose Eva rugs. In the online store "TimeTrial" you can buy an Eva rug with a large or shallow cell. Dirt, water will go to the bottom of the cells, the coating is easy to rinse, it dries quickly.

It's nice to share travel details. The holder for the camera in the boat will securely fix expensive equipment. Capture every minute of your adventures hands-free.

Planning to go fishing? Read our article about tuning an inflatable boat for fishing! The listed equipment, as well as other accessories for boats, kayaks, can be purchased in the TimeTrial catalog section “Accessories and Components”.

What is the difference between a kayak, a kayak and a canoe?

A sharp-nosed rowing light boat, easily going even through shallows and wetlands, is familiar to everyone, but few can determine whether it is a kayak, kayak or canoe.
