Solving (and inventing) charades is one of the most popular word games. In the last years of the outgoing century, this ancient entertainment (the first charades were invented at the end of the 17th century) had several pretty relatives at once, and in particular "sharoids". This is the name of the fun, "widely popular in narrow circles" of fans of the game "What? Where? When?". The first spheroids were born not so long ago, at 1994 year. They also make up words made up of several others, but, unlike charades, these "internal" words form a kind of meaningful expression, for example:
etc. The whole riddle lies in one phrase: it first describes the very expression (ball of hell, mountain melon ...), and then the whole word. As a rule, it turns out a funny, but at the same time difficult puzzle. To solve it, you need not only erudition, but also a sense of humor. Let's say the word ORPHEUS will be encrypted like this: Loud cries of sorceresses or the legendary ancient Greek singer. And here is how the word CHARADE will be guessed: The geometric body of the underworld or a poetic riddle. nine0003

It is not easy to invent spheroids, but guessing is a pleasure. Try to solve some new spheroids.

    7. A safe house for a female pet or insect.

    8. Fat deposit of the ancient Greek goddess or city in Greece.

    9. Push the famous magician or the hero of a children's fairy tale.

    10. Soft container vegetation or an incredulous smile.

    11. The cry of predatory fish or a predictor. (2 points)

    HARDER TASKS

In 47 B.C. the army of the divine Caesar in the battle of Zela crushed the troops of the Pontic king Pharnaces. According to contemporaries, Caesar was prouder of this victory than of all his other triumphs. However, in writing about this glorious battle, he limited himself to only three words: Veni, vidi, vici! (I came, I saw, I conquered!). Since then, this laconic phrase has become winged.

Few, however, noticed that the shortest military report in history has one more feature - all the words in it begin with the same letter. And this means that, consciously or not, Caesar wrote a real tautogram. That's right, tautograms (from the Greek tauto - "the same" and gramma - "letter") are texts in which the first letters in all words are the same. nine0003

Julius Caesar was far from the first in ancient times to master the tautogram. Remarkable "one-letter" passages can still be found in the works of the famous poet Quintus Ennius, who lived a century earlier. Here is one of them in F. Petrovsky's tautogram translation: O Tite, tute, Tati, tibi tanta, tyranne, tulisti! (O Titus Tatius, tyrant, those hardships burden you!).

Since then, countless "one-letter texts" have been written in almost all European languages. Especially many tautograms were created in the middle Ages. For example, in 1530, the Dominican monk Placenius wrote in Latin a grandiose poem "Pugna porcorum" ("Battle of the Pigs"), in which all the words, like in the title, began with the letter "p". And a certain Christian Pier in 1576 created a tautogram poem "Christus Crucifixus" ("Christ crucified") in 1200 lines. nine0003

Of course, there are also "the same letters" in Russian. One of them, without knowing it, we know from childhood as a proverb: God saves the safe! However, for many of us, acquaintance with tautograms begins with folklore stories about the enterprising Pyotr Petrovich (Peter Petrovich went for a walk, caught a parrot, carried it to sell, etc.) or the "preoccupied" father of Onuphry (Father Onuphry, having finished mass, went to explore the surroundings Lake Onega, etc.), have long been "walking" among the people. And for some, the first tautogram must have been an immortal rhyme about merry draftsmen:

    Thursday, fourth,

    At four quarters

    Four black little dirty imps

    Drawn in black ink drawing.

    The drawings are extremely clean!

In general, a tautogram is a long and widely known type of word games. However, this ancient sophistication has very young relatives. Firstly, it is possible to fix not one, but several first letters of each word at once, obtaining already supertautograms; e.g. str emissive str annitsa str jekozy... Secondly, the first letter may not necessarily be unchanged, but, say, the second or final. In the latter case, we arrive at the concept of a terminal tautogram. So I called the texts, all the words in which end with the same letter. It's funny that the simplest example of such "endbooks" is the translation of Caesar's aphoristic "telegram": Come l , see l , defeat l ! (and in Latin this tautogram is both initial and terminal at the same time). nine0003

It is with these terminal tautograms that the next task is connected. Try to tell a memorable story about a gray goat ("Once upon a time, my grandmother had a gray goat ..."), using only words ending in the same letter. The volume of the terminal tautogram should not exceed 200 words.

Overview of responses to the first round

Let's evaluate the results of the first round of our competition (as of mid-March). All readers who sent letters (regular or electronic) with answers solved the first two simple tasks absolutely correctly. Moreover, the majority correctly solved the third task, despite a typo that crept into the condition (instead of the transition I-A, there should, of course, be I-E). However, due to this inaccuracy, the third task was not counted to anyone. nine0003

The responses to the fourth, creative task were more interesting and varied. Let me remind you that readers were asked to come up with a short poem in the difficult genre of unfinished lines. This is the name of texts consisting of sentences in which the last word is not added, but is read in the letters of the written words highlighted in one way or another. For example, the unfinished line AND ALL-TA KI TAI ON ... unfolds into a sentence And yet the secret is China. It is clear that coming up with a verse from such truncated lines is much more difficult than the traditional one. However, it is possible. As a sample, the participants of the competition were offered the following verse by the author:

    The devil lives

    The word gives birth

    Life with the Logos

    Sing this world

    That is:

    The devil lives a lie,

    The word creates light.

Lay down your life with the Logos,

    Sing this world, poet!

Here's what happened to some of our readers.

    N. Zakharova from Orel came up with a funny "common folk" poem from incomplete constructions:

    - Until ma Masha whether ... ?

    - Our lila Masha ... :

    crossed la flow - lost ... .

    I went ku …

    I our la sweat … .

    That is:

    - Is Masha at home, mother?

    - Nashala our Masha:

    crossed the stream -

    lost her paw.

    I went through the slag,

    I found our bast.

A children's horror story turned out to be a reader from Belarus A. Rasina (Gomel):

V mo re na d not spr t an clad…

Not from assigned to to id no b...

St ary k o work there le zhi t ...

    undu ke le zhi t

    That is:

A treasure trove of coins is hidden at the bottom of the sea.

They are not destined to see the light.

The old ship has been lying there for a hundred years.

There is a skeleton on the chest.

Interesting shortcomings of a young philologist from Astrakhan I. Chudasov:

    How zi, ma lysh! Came

And in sa nor ma nit us.

    And speech ka, current humbled,

D aet to lance . Roll!

    That is:

    Slide, baby! Winter has come.

And in the sleigh she beckons us.

And the river, humbled the current, ice rink

Gives - a circle. Roll, buddy!

It is worth noting the double lines of N. Ryazantsev from Riga, as well as the incomplete lines of G. Hemerova from the city of Shatura, Moscow Region and E. Mazhukin.

However, most of all I liked the unfinished work of D. Mitsenko from St. Petersburg:

P le uses then my ...,

    O Sep b - h a groin ...,

    With ve t olik a …,

Pe part on only snow …

    That is:

    The languor summer captivates,

Autumn - the smell of hay,

With spring - a bit of light,

Only the foam of snow is sad...

He becomes the winner of the first round of the competition.
