Now you will be surprised.

Open the volume of AS Pushkin's poems based on the famous poem "Through the wavy fogs...". Take a piece of paper and a pencil. Let's calculate how many different letters are contained in its first four quatrains: how many "a", how many "b", etc. Why? See. nine0004

Easy to calculate. The letter "p" in these sixteen lines appears nine times, "k" - seven times, "v" - six. Other letters are different. There is no "f" letter. So what?

Take a more voluminous work of the same poet - "The Song of the Prophetic Oleg". Do the same calculation here.

In the "Song" there are about 70 letters "p", 80 with something - "k", more than a hundred - "v" ... The letter "f" is never found here either. Here's how? However, it is quite possible.

Let's do the same experiment with Pushkin's wonderful unfinished fairy tale about the bear: "Like a warm spring time...". nine0004

It also contains 60 letters "p", even more "k", and even more so "v". But the letters "f" and here you will not find a single . Now this is getting weird.

What is this - an accident? Or did Pushkin deliberately choose words without "f"?

Do not count further. I'll just tell you: take "The Tale of the Butt...". Among the many different letters, you will not find "f", no matter how much you search. Leaf through "Poltava" and your surprise will increase even more.

There are about 30,000 letters in this magnificent poem. But neither in the first, nor in the third, nor in the fifth thousand will you find the letter "f". Only after reading four or five pages out of fifteen will you stumble upon it for the first time. You will meet this on the 378th line of "Poltava" in a mysterious phrase:

In the darkness of the night they,

"Universals" in the Ukrainian language of those days were called hetman's decrees, and "digits" then meant what we now call "cipher" - a secret letter. In this word, the first letter "f" is found.

Having read "Poltava" to the end, you will meet it two more times in the same word:

Anathema thunders in cathedrals...
Once a year, anathema until now,
Threatening, the cathedral thunders about it...

"Anathema" means a curse. The traitor Mazepa was cursed in all churches.

Thus, among the 30,000 letters of "Poltava" we found only three "f". And "p", "k" or "g"? Yes, there are certainly hundreds, if not thousands. Well, Pushkin had a clear disgust for one of the letters of the Russian alphabet, for the innocent letter "f"?

This is a very curious fact for us.

In Pushkin's "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" the letter "f", as in "Poltava", occurs three times, and all three times in the same word - "fleet". But after all, this word is not Russian, it is of international circulation: in Spanish the fleet will be "flota" (fleet), in English - "fleet" (fleet), in German - "Flotte" (fleet). Great Russian writers and classical poets wrote in pure, truly folk Russian. In his abundant and rich vocabulary, words that came from afar, borrowed always occupied a secondary place.
