Very confusing
I saw positive reviews about this and I'm even more confused than this movie left me? Bad acting, bad directing, absolutely chaotic and messy plot, too scary for children but definitely not coherent enough for adults. Also, they put on these huge unnatural contact lenses on the lead actress that made her off-putting at best, and scary at worst. Speaking of which, I know most movies cast adults to play teens, but she could not pass as a teen at all, it was actually bothersome to watch. I want to know who thought that this, any part of this, was a good idea, and who (and why?!) reviewed it positively. I rarely experience something so horrid, but I did this time, and if I save one person from going through this mind-numbing, bizarre and all around baffling experience, it'll be worth leaving this review.

Sokurov said that he was happy to include his film "Fairy Tale" in the program of the festival in Locarno
July 6, 2022, 12:57
SAINT PETERSBURG, July 6. /TASS/. Director Alexander Sokurov told TASS on Wednesday that he was glad to include his new film "Fairy Tale" in the program of the film festival in Locarno. According to him, this is a festival for young people, so the screening of the film, which was created with the participation of young filmmakers from Russia, would be "more than appropriate."
According to the website of the film festival in Locarno, Sokurov's film "Fairy Tale" is included in the program of Concorso internationale, which shows world premieres of auteur films that compete for the main prize of the film festival - the "Golden Leopard" (Pardo d'oro). The film was shot as part of a joint production between Russia and Belgium and is dedicated to the theme of the Second World War. nine0003
"I don't know yet officially. Well, okay," Sokurov said, when asked to comment on the inclusion of "Fairy Tale" in the Swiss film festival. "It's a young festival, a festival for young people. now I am graduating a directing course at the Institute of Film and Television in St. Petersburg.I work with my young compatriots, among whom there are people who are trying very hard and very successfully working in the art form, and I am very happy for them. <...> Therefore, the movement [ premiere of the film "Fairy Tale"] now in Locarno is more than appropriate and motivated." nine0003
The director said that earlier a special screening of this film was supposed to be held at the Cannes Film Festival. “But just a few hours before the show, they got scared and canceled the show. <…> It was not about the problem of Ukraine <…>, it was about some kind of fear of the content of the picture, its shape. -something to specialists in order to generally understand what kind of code is contained in the picture, what kind of secrets are in the picture. And in the end they did not dare to show the film, "he explained. nine0003
"Then we were asked to show the film by the [film festival in] Venice, but we withdrew the film from Venice and transferred it in response to urgent requests to Locarno, [to Switzerland] as a country with the most neutral political atmosphere," Sokurov added .
The director also admitted that the participation of his film at the Locarno festival has a symbolic meaning for him. "I started my international practice as a film director from Locarno," he said. nine0003
Pride in young colleagues
Sokurov said that the film was created with the participation of young filmmakers from different regions of Russia, including Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Krasnoyarsk, St. Petersburg. "The technology is absolutely, in my opinion, innovative. Much that the viewer will see on the screen in this film, in terms of artistic language or form <...> has not yet been. I am proud of the work of my young colleagues," he said.
The director recalled that the film was made with private funds, without government support. "In that sense, it's an independent movie. It's such a historical fantasy. The movie is long, one hour and twenty minutes long," he added. nine0003
A fantastic fairy tale with historical characters
According to the director, the collection of historical materials for the film has been going on for several years. We are talking about visual materials and documents, including from the US and Europe. Also, research was carried out in the field of graphics, painting of the 18th, 19th, 20th centuries to create a "special environment for the action of characters," he noted.
"Despite the fact that this is a fantasy tale, the characters are historical in this film. And everything they say is one way or another what they said once when they were still alive <...>. In In this sense, from the point of view of facts, I think that this film can be trusted, but <...> this, of course, is an art form, this is a work of art, this is not journalism," Sokurov said. nine0003
The peculiarity of the film, which the director pointed out, is that in it, as in his previous films, there is not a single line in Russian. "The film comes with international subtitles. Each country that wishes to [show the picture at home] can have subtitles in their own language. We have prepared English, German, Italian, French subtitles. We did everything to make it comfortable for the audience. Just in case we have also prepared a Russian version, although we have not yet submitted the film to the Ministry of Culture for a permit," he said. nine0003
Answering the question whether he would go to present the film in Switzerland, Sokurov did not rule out that this would happen. "If they let me out, I have to go there for two days and present the film," he said. The film festival will be held in the first half of August.

Russian man's fantasy about the Old World. How the film "Fairy Tale" turned out
"Fairy Tale" is a real fantasy of a Russian person, which, as it were, exists on the verge between a dream and a fairy tale. A dream is considered here as a kind of foresight, a prediction, and a fairy tale as a kind of artistic generalization of what he saw. nine0003
I would not like to reveal all the characters now, but I just want to note that these are some of the main men of the 20th century. I still tend to think more about the inner essence of a person, about his responsibility and the responsibility of men before history, before making decisions. I think about this all the time.
The political context and the political atmosphere in general have never interested me. I am a historian by first education, and I perfectly understand what makes up a political position, what makes up a political decision, and how changeable and crafty political behavior can be. So it doesn't interest me much. nine0003
I am interested in the life of a person within life: how it penetrates into him and how, on the basis of his personal qualities, he tries to influence life or his own, or, as with my heroes, the existence of a huge number of people. This is very relevant today as well. As a matter of fact, it has never been otherwise. This world tradition, so to speak, we cannot violate in any way, we cannot change it, at least in the Old World
The greatness and sin of the Old World

Sokurov believes that the contribution of Russian figures to world art is enormous and undeniable
In general, this is a home movie. This is a film about what we, in our Old World - and I refer Russia to the Old World - in the end, is happening. All the amazing and unique, outstanding discoveries, almost everything - both in science and in art - took place in the Old World. But all the horrifying events - the First World War, the Second World War, everything connected with the emergence and rooting of Nazism - took place there. This pattern worries me a lot. nine0003
The film is implicitly about this, because its characters are all from the Second World War. At the same time, in fact, in the "Fairy Tale" it is shown that nothing has yet been completed. The historical process, once started, can never end.
Both in the history of Russia and in the history of any European country, all this exists, as they say, in parallel. Where do we put the moral collision of France, for example, during the Second World War, when the French stopped the war with the Nazis and were able to arrange relations with them? At that time, on the territory of the Soviet Union, they fought to the death for every tree, for every village, for every ravine. Someone paid with their blood for the peace that they arranged for themselves, for example, in France. I do not reproach - this is an internal French problem, I think they should deal with it themselves. But we must understand this, we must think about it. nine0003
The viewer has never seen them like this before
Our film uses a new technology that brings back to life people who really exist and were once filmed on camera. This is the process of "implanting" historical characters into a certain environment, when our characters themselves, as it were, return to this real life, they themselves play their roles. However, there are no actors in the film.
We used a huge amount of chronicle material that we managed to collect both in Europe and in America. We were helped by many archives from different countries of the world. As in a mosaic, we put together from individual manifestations of character, from individual plastic examples, a picture of the behavior and life of these outstanding historical characters on our screen
We do not have a single word in Russian, each character speaks his own language, native speakers did the dubbing. I wrote actor's texts, all dialogues, everything is spelled out, made by me on the basis of transcripts, phonograms and author's texts of these characters. There are practically no fictitious thoughts, fictitious positions, some fictitious mythologies. These are absolutely living people, you will see them for the first time in that emotional state and in that emotional disclosure and self-disclosure - the viewer has never seen them like this. nine0003
This is so unexpected, so sincere, that some specialists in Western Europe, to whom we showed the film, did not understand at all where they were. Some of them simply didn't understand what it was about because they couldn't accept the revelation.
From Cannes to Locarno
Still, the attitude towards historical material in cinema is very peculiar. It is insincere, it is so fearful, it is contained in some kind of framework. For example, when "The Tale" was asked to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival and then saw the finished material, they were so amazed and horrified by the film that they immediately sent it to the French secret services for a consultation. nine0003
"What is this? How can it be? Where does it come from? What does it all mean?" The day of the show in Cannes was appointed, until the last literally day this show was not canceled, but then they got scared, they did not dare to show it.
We gave the painting to Locarno, where it has been waiting all these months. Nevertheless, Switzerland is a neutral country, and I am a fan of state neutrality as a form of political or foreign policy existence. Therefore, irritation, fear and rejection of the "Fairy Tale" in the countries that have joined some blocs is irresistible. And the Swiss festival, which represents a neutral country, gladly accepted our film for showing. I am very happy about this. nine0003
It is important for me that I can show this film there. It's important for me to do this. I have not always insisted that my films be seen by the audience. In this case it is necessary. At least, Natalia Dmitrievna Solzhenitsyna and Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, who have already watched the film, say exactly this: it is necessary to show it to as many people as possible.
