FREE - Book Level Checker!

I am grateful to find a book leveling app that was free & easy to use. As a first year teacher, I needed to sort out all my donated books and make sure my students were able to find books at their level. With several hundred books, I really didn’t have the time to go online to search for each one. A quick scan from my camera and the book info pops up. The only issues I have is getting information back on every book I scan. I have tried the manual entry method, but that does not always give me the information I’m looking for. I would recommend this app (as long as it’s still free)!

Thank you for your feedback. It is amazing to hear that you scanned several hundred books and saved a lot of time. Regarding the manual entry issue you mentioned, that's for searching AR information if you don't have ISBN barcode. For your case, you can find all scanned books in the "Books" tab at the bottom. On the "Books" page, you can easily share and print the book list in PDF format. Really appreciate your feedback, we will work out a solution to make it more intuitive.

excellent APP

Every parent must have this app if your kids read a lot! It is super fast and makes the book scanning a happy chore. Also, I LOVE the reading list tracking feature! I don't need to write down on my notebook anymore. This is the best money I've ever spent on the apple store!

Great AR level checker tool

Usually I check book’s AR level through official site for my kid. However it takes my time and not so user friendly. I find this app and it saves me tons of time. It is pretty straight forward and blazing fast! Recommend to parents like me.

Thank you for your kind words. We're very glad you like our Book Level Checker App. Here is the little story about our app. Similar to your experience, checking AR information through the official website is not convenient. We also tried other apps in the market to find appropriate AR level books for our kids. But they are not good enough in terms of speed and accuracy. Therefore, we created this app for parents, teachers, students, and librarians. We are pretty proud of its scan speed and accuracy. Hope this app will save valuable time for our users.

Schools across the nation, both public and private, participate in programs that measure students reading comprehension, which are commonly known as or AR Reading (Accelerated Reader) or Counts. Students are encouraged to read daily, in and out of school, then take a quiz about the book and earn a specific point value. All books are assigned a reading level so children are fairly free to select titles that interest them within a specific range.

(part of the Technology 101 for Parents Series)
What is AR Reading and Why is it Important

My two oldest children have had tremendous success with the AR Reading program that is used in their schools. When my eldest was an emerging reader, she was highly motivated to earn points and read a variety of titles.  She is definitely self driven and competitive, so this spurred her on to read a great deal, especially outside the classroom. She is now in middle school and AR Reading is no longer part of her education, but she remains a voracious reader because of the habits she formed in her early elementary years.

Finding Age Appropriate AR Reading Books

My son, currently a third grader, has also had success with AR Reading. He is not as competitive as my older daughter but enjoys earning points, setting goals for himself, and exceeding them. He frequently reads with no prompting when he is out of school and likes to take the quizzes.

For me, our biggest struggle with AR Reading has been finding appropriate books for my kid’s specific level. Bookstores and our public libraries don’t always label the books with point values or levels and we acquire the majority of our titles from those locations.

Apps for AR Reading (AKA Reading Counts)

Fear not, there’s an app for that! Here are some suggestions to help your little readers find books that interest them and correspond with their reading level.

Good Books Lookup App $.99: Simply scan a book’s barcode to retrieve the AR reading level and number of points the book quiz is worth.

BookScanner App $1.99: Another easy peasy app where you simply scan a barcode to obtain all relevant AR Reading info.

The Literacy Leveler is $3.99, but does a bit more than some of the other available AR apps. Not only will it scan books and provide level information, but it also allows you to keep track of books read in a library format. This app is specific to grades K-8 and got high reviews from parents who had been frustrated with other AR apps.

If you want help finding books your kids will like to read and that are age appropriate, we’ve got a whole series on book suggestions by age.

Procedure for checking the oil level

An iron clang and rumble from under the hood, a "garland" on the dashboard, an oil trail on the asphalt... Here it is, a driver's nightmare! But these horrors can be encountered live if you miss the oil level. Let's figure out how to properly monitor it.

    Oil level

Everyone has heard about the importance of oil - it protects the engine from wear by lubricating its parts. For stable operation of the engine, you need not only to choose the right viscosity of oil, but also to monitor its amount. Too little or too much oil can create big problems.

Low engine oil levels lead to oil starvation: parts either do not receive enough lubrication to operate correctly, or are not lubricated at all. The temperature rises, engine wear increases, and there is a risk of pistons and valves jamming.

Too high an oil level is also dangerous. Many car enthusiasts believe that an excess of lubricant does not harm the engine - you can’t spoil porridge with oil. This is not true. Oil above the level foams faster and forms deposits in the cylinders. Gaskets and seals are destroyed, leaks appear, and the load on the oil pump increases.

This is why it is important to keep an eye on the engine oil and check the level regularly.

    Pressure sensor and red lamp

The oil level affects its pressure, which is measured by a special sensor in the cylinder block. By pressure, one can indirectly judge the level: at dangerous values, the oil pressure lamp lights up on the dashboard, familiar to every driver - a red oiler.

Always check that the oil indicator is working: it should come on along with other lamps when the ignition is turned on and go out quickly after starting the engine. If there is no oiler on the panel, you need to look for the cause - a burnt out light bulb or a faulty sensor.

If the oil pressure lamp comes on while driving, stop immediately and turn off the engine. And it’s even better the other way around: turn off the engine immediately, turn on neutral, and coast to the side of the road. Check the oil level - it may not be enough. You can’t go further: you will either have to top up the oil to the norm, or call a tow truck.

But you should not rely only on the bulb, because the oil pressure sensor is connected to it, not the level. A healthy oil pump is able to maintain pressure even at a dangerously low level, and the indicator will be treacherously silent. Or vice versa: the oiler may blink due to a worn pump or a poor-quality filter with a normal amount of oil. Therefore, you need to regularly measure its level manually using a dipstick.

    Oil dipstick

“My car doesn't eat oil. I just check it often and bail it out with a dipstick.
    (Automotive Humor)

The oil dipstick is a simple and time-tested tool for checking the oil level that any engine has. It does not depend on sensors and light bulbs, and the result is immediately visible.

There are marks on the end of the probe. The lower one (may be marked MIN or LOW) corresponds to the minimum oil level, the upper one (MAX or FULL) corresponds to the maximum.

It is advisable to check the oil level with a dipstick before each trip - however, few drivers do this. But you need to look under the hood at least once a week. Don't wait until the red light comes on - it might be too late.

How to check the oil level

There are two ways to check the oil level. In both, the car must stand on a level surface with the engine turned off.

Cold oil check . Usually the oil is measured in this way, before the trip. This is logical: I checked the level in the morning, and you drive calmly all day. But using autostart by starting the car from home will not work, which is inconvenient in winter. In this case, there is a second way to check.

Checking the oil on a hot engine . To measure after a trip, you need to turn off the engine and wait 10–15 minutes for the oil to glass into the crankcase. So the check will be more accurate.

How to check the oil level

    1. Prepare thick cloths or paper towels to wipe the dipstick. Wet wipes or rags that leave pellets will not work: you can’t let dirt get into the engine.
    2. Open the hood and locate the dipstick. Usually it says Engine Oil on the handle.
    3. Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a tissue and reinsert it until it stops.
    4. Pull out the dipstick again and check the oil level according to the marks. The oil trail should be between them, ideally in the middle.
    5. If the result is blurry (in every sense), repeat the two previous steps.

The exact algorithm for checking the oil level is in the instructions for the car.

How to add oil or drain excess

If the level is too low or too high, the engine cannot be started. First you need to add the missing oil, or get rid of the excess.

How to add oil to the engine correctly

First you need to find the same oil that is already filled in the engine - the parameters are in the service book. Do not mix oils of different manufacturers and types. It is wise to immediately buy oil with a small margin, leaving it to top up, or carry a separate "liter" in case of emergency.

After opening the oil filler cap (usually it has an oiler, viscosity number or Engine Oil written on it), insert a funnel and pour oil in small portions, regularly checking the level with a dipstick. From the top to the bottom line, approximately 0.5-1 liter of oil, depending on the car.

How to properly drain excess oil from the engine

To pump out excess oil, you need to visit the nearest pharmacy - you will need a dropper and a large syringe. The dropper hose must be cut along the length of the dipstick and put on the nozzle of the syringe.

Remove the dipstick, insert the “special tool” made into its neck and carefully draw out the oil using a syringe. Don't get carried away: regularly pull out the hose and check the level with a dipstick. Remove oil until the right amount remains in the engine.

Just don't pour the oil from the syringe onto the ground - drain it into a separate bottle to dispose of at your next service visit.

    Oil leaks

Oil can not only burn during operation, but also leak out, and very quickly. Therefore, in addition to measuring with a dipstick, you need to pay attention to oil stains and smudges.

It's a good habit to take a look under the front of the car before driving. If fresh oil stains turn black on the asphalt, make sure they are not yours. Open the hood and carefully inspect the engine. Leaks can be deep: on the oil pressure sensor, crankshaft oil seals (front and rear), or on the block itself. It is better to arm yourself with a flashlight.

If in doubt, check the oil with a dipstick before starting the car. Top up to the correct level if necessary. And urgently contact the service if you find a leak - it may intensify.

If the oil seals simply “sweat” — the oil does not drip onto the ground, but covers the engine with a black “sludge” — you can postpone the repair for some time, or even avoid it, the “Anti-leak” bay. This is a special oil additive (oil system sealant) that restores elasticity to gaskets and seals and eliminates leakage.

Follow these simple tips: check your oil level regularly, keep an eye on the red oil can on your dashboard, inspect your car, and don't ignore problems. Then horror driving legends will not touch you.

How to check the oil level correctly?

To check the level correctly, warm up the engine and park the vehicle on a level surface. It is recommended to check the oil level regularly by setting the car in the same position. After stopping the engine, at least five minutes must elapse in order for the oil in the oil system to glass as much as possible into the sump. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a cloth, then reinsert it into the channel until it stops and remove it again, holding it vertically downwards so that the flowing oil cannot distort the measurement results. The oil level must be between the max and min marks. Or cover the notched area on the dipstick (depending on which dipstick the car manufacturer uses). When measuring the oil level, it is always useful to smell the dipstick, the smell of fuel or burning is a reason to carry out diagnostics at the service. Too fast or too slow draining of oil from the dipstick is also a reason to contact the service. The dark color of the oil is not a sign of a malfunction, the darkening of the oil is absolutely normal in operation. The color should be paid attention when the oil has become opaque and the color resembles coffee with milk. This is a reason to do a car diagnostic.

Slight oil consumption, within a liter per service interval is not a cause for concern. It is also recommended to pay attention to the cleanliness of the filler cap itself. Under the lid there should be no soot, emulsion and other impurities. You can read more about oil consumption here. In case of malfunctions of the fuel system, the oil level in the engine may exceed the initial one, in which case it is necessary to contact the service. Fortunately, such malfunctions are quite rare; when checking the oil level, you can independently conduct an early diagnosis than prevent possible problems with the engine.

How to add oil to a car engine?

Add oil in small portions, approximately 100 ml each, with constant level control. It is recommended to use a suitable funnel for pouring. With a complete oil change, fresh oil should first be added to the minimum mark, the engine should be started and the line filled, while the pressure control lamp should go out.
