9 Fun Versions of the Alphabet Song to Sing with Kids

Learning to sing the alphabet song is an important part of the process of  learning letter recognition on the journey to reading and writing. While I am pretty sure we all know the traditional alphabet song, these super cool versions are lots of fun and fabulous for bringing the letters of the alphabet to life for preschool, kindergarten and early elementary/primary aged children.

The Alphabet Song by The LMNOPs: An upbeat, groovy version of the classic song.

The Alphabet Song by Super Simple Songs: The most traditional version of the song in this collection with a great animation with plastic letters, great for encouraging kids to follow along.

Elmo Sings a Rap Alphabet Song: So Sesame Street has to have the most fabulous of all video alphabet resources, right?!! I’ve featured a few here, including this fun version with Elmo rapping.

ABC Disco with Grover: Now this is classic Sesame Street. In fact, I am pretty sure I first saw it in the 70s when I was a child! You just can’t go past disco!

Sesame Street’s Outer Space ABCs: A more classic song version from Sesame Street with a cool, space themed animation.

ABC Song by Debbie Doo: Debbie sings a catchy jazz version of the classic alphabet song.

The ABC Song by StoryBots: A fun robot animation with cool robotic singing voices.

ABC Phonics Song by The Learning Station: Teaching the alphabet through different musical styles! Love the rock version.

Animal Alphabet by Key Wilde: An fun alphabet story told through a song about fun animal antics with gorgeous illustrations. I can see this inspiring some great alphabet animal drawing with older children.

Have fun singing the alphabet! Do you have a favourite version?

Have fun learning the alphabet with Elmo Loves ABCs for Windows 8 and RT

You know a platform like Windows 8 catches on when high-end kids games start to appear. The trendy little ones with crappy graphics and designs come first, followed by professional games featuring popular characters. For example, characters like Elmo and the cast of Sesame Street!

Elmo Loves ABC is definitely in the professional category as it is an extremely reliable educational game for preschoolers and kindergarteners. The game is available as a premium app for Windows 8 and RT. Skip past the break for our quick impressions

Introducing the Alphabet

The main interface in the Elmo Loves alphabet is a window surrounded by the letters of the alphabet. In this window, authentic clips of Elmo and the Sesame Street Gang live will help young players learn the basics of the English alphabet.

After choosing a letter, Elmo's voice will ask the children to trace the uppercase and lowercase versions of that letter. After successfully completing both versions of the letter, the application will display three photos that start with that letter. Press one and a short video of an object or person will appear in the main window.

Children can take a break from studying letters by moving the slider on the right side of the window to the pencil icon. This launches a coloring mode where budding artists can paint on a blank canvas using 11 colors. Other than finger painting, there are no tools, but the game allows kids to save their photos by tapping the save icon.

Move the slider to the bottom position (magnifying glass) to play hide and seek with the selected letter. The window will be covered with items such as balloons for the children to remove. Swipe across the clutter and three objects starting with the target letter will be revealed. A decent minigame, but performance is a bit slow on the original Surface RT.

More interesting features

Click on the gear in the lower left corner of the screen to access several additional modes and functions. There are four alphabet-related songs with videos to sing along, including the traditional Alphabet Song.

Move the clunky little slider next to the video icons to the right and you'll have a more advanced letter game. Elmo will ask your child to choose the correct letter or object starting with that letter from a box of four options. This is a kind of quiz for children who have already taken some of their letters.

Elmo Loves ABC is a great learning game for Windows tablet and PC users. While the menus and clunky sides, the artistic design and activities are all bright and intuitive. Kids who love Sesame Street (as they should!) will be thrilled to explore their letters and watch Elmo, Cookie Monster, Kermit and other Sesame Street characters in the included videos.

These videos result in a rather large file size, which may explain why Sesame Workshop did not publish the game on Windows Phone. But if your child is age-appropriate for the material and has access to a Windows tablet, then ABC Elmo Loves is worth downloading.
