Spelling of suffixes -k- and -sk-

Suffixes -k- and -sk- belong to different categories of adjectives.

The suffix -к- is written after the stem consonants as part of quality adjectives that have a short form.

Examples:

  • viscous-viscous;
  • bulky - bulky;
  • close - close;
  • daring - daring.

The suffix -к- forms relative adjectives from nouns, the stem of which ends in consonants k, c, h followed by alternation k, h//c :

  • miner → miner;
  • weaver → weaver;
  • blacksmith → blacksmith.

The suffix -sk- is written for relative adjectives in some cases.

In a number of words formed from nouns with double spelling of consonants at the root, one consonant "s" is omitted:

If the geographical name ends with the letter combination "sk" , then one letter is written in the derived adjective "s" :

  • Smolensk → Smolensk;
  • Bratsk → brotherly;
  • Murmansk → Murmansk.

The spelling “ь” before the suffix -sk-

Adjectives formed from nouns with the basis of the letters “ н”, “р” do not write the soft sign:

  • Siberia → Siberian region;
  • Astrakhan → Astrakhan herring;
  • January → January frost.

But for all other relative adjectives formed from the names of months, a soft sign must be written before the suffix -sk- :

  • June → June;
  • October → October.

The soft sign is always written after the letter "l" before the suffix -sk- of adjectives, regardless of whether there is a soft sign in the stem of the generating noun:

  • ambassador → ambassadorial;
  • angel → angelic;
  • admiral → admiral;
  • publisher → publisher;
  • teacher → teacher.

The spelling of H and HH for adjectives depends on what part of speech they are formed from.
