“Careful, baby, it's loaded,” he said, returning to the bedroom.

Her back was leaning against the headboard.

Is this for your wife?

— No. It would be risky. I'll hire a killer.

— What if the killer is me?

He grinned.

— Who would be smart enough to hire a woman to kill a man?

She licked her lips and aimed a fly at him.

- Your wife's.

Van Gogh bed story | The Art Newspaper Russia — art news

The fate of the artist's bed immortalized on the famous canvas is worthy of a novel: from the French Arles it ended up in the Dutch town near Arnhem, having survived the war in 1945 - details in the new book "Bedroom in Arles".

1888-1889 / Courtesy of Vincent Van Gogh Foundatio

A series of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh , depicting his bedroom, helps to better understand the Arles period of the artist's work, when his most significant works were created. The bed depicted in the famous painting, it turns out, survived until the end of World War II. At 19In 45, a descendant of the artist donated it to the community near the small Dutch town of Arnhem, which suffered during the liberation of the Netherlands.

Van Gogh bought a bed for himself (and another for a guest) in September 1888, just before the arrival of Gauguin , who was staying with him at the Yellow House. Each cost 150 francs - a huge amount of money at that time: it was ten months' rent. Moreover, the bed was double: probably, Van Gogh counted on the fact that from time to time he would share a bed with a girlfriend. Having settled into his first bachelor's dwelling, he enthusiastically rushed to paint a new, furnished bedroom in his own way. “The most beautiful pictures are the dreams that come when you smoke a pipe in bed,” he wrote. This is how he conceived several of his masterpieces.

Gauguin came to live with a friend a month after the beds were bought, but immediately left Arles after the unfortunate events of December 23rd. It was in this bed that he lay when Van Gogh, bleeding from a famous act of self-mutilation, returned home after a visit to a local brothel, where he handed a piece of his ear to a certain girl. After this incident, the wounded artist spent only a few nights at home, and then he was sent to the Arles hospital.

Van Gogh was about to leave his bed in the hospital in Saint-Remy, where he was transferred in May 1889year, but instead asked to leave it in Arles, and in 1890 it was taken apart and taken by train to Auvers-sur-Oise, north of Paris, where he spent the last days of his life. While in Auvers, Van Gogh noted in a letter to his brother that, like portraits, "furniture ... keeps memories for many years. " On July 27, 1890, he shot himself in the chest while walking in wheat fields in the suburbs and died two days later.

Vincent's brother Theo , who inherited his fortune, died of syphilis six months later, and the bed was inherited by his widow Joe . She immediately returned to Holland, where she opened a small hotel. Van Gogh's bed was very useful - it was necessary to put the guests somewhere. Jo died in 1925 and the bed was inherited by her son, Vincent , who lived in the town of Laren, east of Amsterdam.

Paper trail

While working in the archives of the Van Gogh Museum, I found a mention of a bed in private correspondence. In 1937, they wanted to turn the Yellow House into a small museum, and Fernand Benois , the curator of the Musée Arles, who seized on the idea fervently, approached Vincent van Gogh, the artist's nephew who had inherited Joe's fortune, to borrow some paintings. Vincent agreed, adding: "I can also offer you a bed from a picture of a bedroom. " This letter on thin tissue paper, almost completely decayed, was the first proof that the bed existed. The Yellow House never became a museum. Later, in 1944, the building was damaged during the Allied bombing, and then completely demolished.

I continued my investigation: I contacted the son of Van Gogh's nephew Johan van Gogh who was 93 years old at the time. I came to his house, in the suburbs of The Hague, in 2015. He recalled that the bed had been kept in their basement and recounted the events of 1945: his father donated the bed to war victims who lived "somewhere in the Arnhem area" in the eastern part of the Netherlands.

Teun Koetsier, Laren historian and author of a book on World War II, kindly helped me in my search. On September 19For 45 years, the inhabitants of Laren have collected several trucks of furniture as humanitarian aid for Boxmeer, a town 40 km south of Arnhem. Photographs of trucks arriving at Boxmeer have been preserved.

The needy who got Van Gogh's bed apparently had no idea about its famous owner and role in art.
