Deep learning, machine learning and artificial intelligence

Consider the following definitions for understanding deep learning versus machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Deep learning is a type of machine learning based on artificial neural networks. The learning process is called deep because the structure of artificial neural networks consists of several input, output and hidden layers. Each layer contains units that convert the input data into information that the next layer can use for a particular prediction task. Thanks to this structure, the computer can learn through its own data processing.
Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that uses methods (such as deep learning) to allow computers to use experience to improve problem solving. The learning process is based on the following steps.
1. Passing data to the algorithm. (In this step, you can pass additional information to the model, for example, by getting additional data).
2. This data is used to train the model.
3. Testing and deploying the model.
4. Using a deployed model for automated problem solving based on prediction. (In other words, call and use the deployed model to get the predictions returned by the model).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technique that allows computers to mimic human intelligence. This also applies to machine learning.

Using machine learning and deep learning techniques, you can create computer systems and applications that perform tasks normally assigned to humans. These tasks include image recognition, speech recognition, and language translation.

Deep learning and machine learning methods

Now that we have an overview of machine learning and deep learning, let's compare the two methods. In machine learning, the algorithm needs to be told how to make an accurate prediction using additional information (for example, by getting data). In the case of deep learning, the algorithm will be able to learn how to make an accurate prediction by processing data on its own using the framework of artificial neural networks.

What is transfer learning?

Training deep learning models often requires a large amount of training data, high performance computing resources (GPU, TPU), and time. In cases where access to such resources is not available, one can try to simplify the learning process using a technique known as learning transfer.

Transfer learning is a method in which knowledge gained from solving one task is transferred to another task related to the first.

The structure of neural networks is such that the first set of layers usually contains lower-level features, and the last set contains higher-level features that we are interested in. By applying the last layers to a new problem or area of interest, you can significantly reduce the amount of time, data, and computational resources required to train a new model. For example, if you have a model that recognizes cars, you can repurpose that model by transferring training to recognize trucks, motorcycles, and other types of vehicles.

Machine Learning Use Cases

With the structure of an artificial neural network, deep learning is great at finding patterns in unstructured data such as images, sound, video, and text. For this reason, deep learning is driving rapid transformation across industries including healthcare, energy, finance, and transportation. These industries are now reengineering traditional business processes.

Some of the most common applications of deep learning are discussed in the following paragraphs. With Azure Machine Learning, you can use a model built with an open source platform or build a model using the provided tools.

Named Entity Recognition

Named Entity Recognition is a deep learning technique that takes a piece of text as input and converts it into a predefined class. This new information could be a zip code, a date, or a product code. This information can then be stored in a structured schema to create a list of addresses, or serve as a reference for a code review engine.

Object detection

Deep learning is often used for object detection. Object detection consists of two parts: image classification and image localization. Image classification recognizes images of objects (eg cars or people). Localization images gives the specific location of these objects.

Object detection is already used in industries such as computer games, retail, tourism and self-driving vehicles.

Creating an image title

As with image recognition, when creating image titles, the system must create a title that describes the content of a particular image. If you have the technology to detect and tag objects in photos, the next step is to convert those tags into descriptive sentences.

Description applications typically use convolutional neural networks first and then recurrent neural networks to convert labels into connected sentences.

Machine translation

Machine translation takes words or sentences in one language and automatically translates them into another language. Machine translation has been around for a long time, but deep learning is now producing impressive results in two specific areas: automatic text translation (and speech-to-text translation) and automatic image conversion.

With the appropriate data transformation, the neural network can understand text, sound and visual signals. Machine translation can be used to recognize snippets of sound in large audio files and convert spoken language or images to text.

Text analytics

Deep learning-based text analytics analyzes large amounts of textual data (such as medical records or cash receipts), recognizes patterns, and generates ordered and organized information.

Companies use deep learning for text analytics to detect insider trading and comply with legal requirements. Another common example is insurance fraud: machine text analysis is often used to analyze large volumes of documents in order to recognize potential fraud masquerading as an insurance event.

Artificial neural networks

Artificial neural networks are formed using layers of connected nodes. Deep learning models use neural networks with many layers.

The following sections cover the most popular types of artificial neural networks.

Queue Neural Network

Queue Neural Network is the simplest type of artificial neural network. In a queuing network, information moves in only one direction from the input layer to the output layer. Line-by-line neural networks transform the input data by passing it through several hidden layers. Each layer consists of a set of neurons and is fully connected to all neurons in the previous layer. The last fully connected layer (the output layer) is the output of the generated predictions.

Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)

Recurrent Neural Networks are widely used artificial neural networks. These networks store the output of a layer and feed it back to the input layer to improve the prediction at the output of a particular layer. Recurrent neural networks have excellent learning opportunities. They are widely used to perform complex tasks such as time series forecasting, handwriting recognition training, and natural speech recognition.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)

A Convolutional Neural Network is a highly efficient artificial neural network with a unique architecture. The layers in it are organized in three dimensions: width, height and depth. The neurons in one layer do not connect to all the neurons in the next layer, but only to a small area of the neurons in that layer. The final result is reduced to a single probability score vector ordered by depth in one of the dimensions.

Convolutional neural networks are used in areas such as video recognition, image recognition, and recommendation systems.

Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)

Generative Adversarial Networks are regenerative models trained to create realistic content such as images. Each such network consists of two networks known as a generator and a discriminator. Both networks are trained simultaneously. During training, the generator uses random noise to create new artificial data that looks like real data. The discriminator takes the output of the generator as input and uses the real data to determine if the generated content is real or artificial. Each of the networks competes with each other. The generator attempts to create artificial content that is indistinguishable from real content, while the discriminator attempts to correctly classify the input as either real or artificial. The output is then used to update the weights of both networks to help them better achieve their respective goals.

Generative adversarial networks are used to solve problems such as image-to-image conversion and age progression.

Transformers

Transformers is a model architecture that is suitable for solving problems containing sequences such as text or time series data. They consist of encoder and decoder layers. The encoder takes input and maps it to a numeric representation that contains certain information, such as context. The decoder uses information from the encoder to produce output, such as translated text. Transformers differ from other architectures containing encoders and decoders in their nested layers of attention. Attention: a method of focusing on specific parts of the input based on the importance of their context relative to other inputs in the sequence. For example, when summarizing news articles, not all sentences are important to describe the main idea. If you focus on the keywords in the article, the summarization can be done in one sentence - in the title.

Transformers are used to solve natural language processing problems such as translation, text generation, question answering, and text summarization.

The first week you study for free in the "With a teacher" format to try out all the elements of the educational process. All subjects of the selected class are available for you to study.

The hard time limit applies only to homework deadlines. But for homework, you can choose a convenient format - once a month or once a week, or turn them in ahead of the program.
