15 games that pump logic, algorithms, assembler and the power of the earth - Games on DTF

        14 731 views

There is "Super Mario", a recognized classic of video games. There is "Doom", which is launched on teapots and pregnancy tests. There are super-popular games according to twitch.tv statistics (“League of Legends”, “GTA V”, “Fortnite”, “Apex Legends”) that are streamed by a fifth of all streamers.

And there are games that have very few reviews, but they are super cool - games about algorithms. Games that can be coded on a retro computer; games that need to be hacked; games where you can program controllers or character behavior; games where you can create your game inside the game.

Below is a selection of cool games about algorithms from the last 10 years. If I missed something, I will be glad to add.

I also created a channel in Telegram: GameDEVils, where I share cool materials (about game design, development and history of games).

        Platforms

Projects that contain the words "platform", "games" and "programming" are more often aimed at children (like CodeCombat or Code.org). I nevertheless decided to mention one platform, which is designed for an adult audience.

        Codin Game

CodinGame is the company behind the platform of the same name that you can play on. The platform supports 25 programming languages. You can dig into the puzzles yourself, there is a training section, you can play multiplayer with friends. Here is a link to how some participated in the challenges from this platform.

Judging by the reviews, for some, playing on CodinGame is instead of a smoke break at work. Here they wrote (Played == coded) about games that are for “pumping skills”, and mentioned CodinGame. There are many more similar games in the article at the link, so I will no longer mention "teaching" programming games.

        Games from Zachtronics Industries

There are guys, Zachtronics Industries, who specialize in puzzle games, games related to programming and engineering. Over the past 10 years, they have released about a dozen games, 7 of which I include in the selection, because they are more related to algorithms or programming than others. By the way, developers provide all "engineering" games to schools and non-profit organizations for free.

        SpaceChem (2011)

This is one of the first Zachtronics games, a puzzle game in which the developers tried to combine chemistry, programming and space monsters.

The player must create a specific molecule by programming two remote manipulators, called waldos in the game. These waldos can be programmed using a visual programming language.

        Trailer

SpaceChem was the developers' first attempt at a commercial game after a number of free-to-play Flash games. The game was translated into Russian.
SpaceChem has been included in some academic institutions to teach concepts related to both chemistry and programming.

        Infinifactory (2015)

This game also has production lines like SpaceChem, but in 3D. According to the lore of the game, you were abducted by aliens, you are building a production line for them and trying not to die. From time to time you find the corpses of your predecessors, audio recordings of their dying tantrums, or see their orange spacesuits through the porthole window. The game works on PS4.

        Trailer

You don't need to write any code here, you are building a production line from blocks that can move, rotate and merge objects, i.e. the functions of the blocks are predefined. You need to line up the blocks in the correct order to complete the task. The game offers to use the minimum number of blocks when building lines and shows the results of Steam friends who have already played this game.

        TIS-100 (2015)

TIS-100 is a puzzle game for programmers. The player is invited to write code in simplified assembly language to perform tasks on a fictional virtual computer 1970s that was damaged. The virtual computer has 12 nodes, some of them do not work at the beginning of the game. The player needs to rewrite the code, fix bugs and solve the puzzle. After each stage, the player can compare his results with the results of all players. The game collects statistics, how many lines of code, how many nodes, how many ticks the players used when solving the puzzle.

        Trailer

Here on Habré they wrote about TIS-100.

        Shenzhen I/O (2016)

According to the lore of the game, you are a beginner, come to a Chinese company, gain experience. The first screen of the game is the employee's desktop, where he receives instructions by e-mail and the first task is to design an electronic device. You write firmware, the firmware passes tests, and after that you receive a letter, how much such a device will cost, how much electricity the device consumes and how many lines of code are in your firmware. And sometimes it is not enough to successfully pass load testing. In order for the device to go into production, it will have to be optimized. In short, a game about how to safely, cheaply and cheerfully create your own Flipper Zero.

        Opus Magnum (2017)

If SpaceChem was about chemistry, it's about alchemy. There is a storyline in the game, according to which a talented alchemist is accepted for the position of chief alchemist in the oldest influential family, but it is rather for beauty.

At each stage, the player needs to build a system that creates an alchemical element. The player is given a certain number of reagents to perform the experiment, a transmutation card that explains how to turn mercury into gold, and an unlimited number of manipulators that affect the cost of systems that the player creates. The system must be "programmed" using visual programming. In the tradition of Zachtronics games, the fewer steps, the fewer elements in the system and the less code, the better.

        Exapunks (2018)

A programming simulator set around the hacking culture of the 1990s.

Alternative 90s in San Francisco. You are sick with a strange disease that turns parts of your body into computer parts. To get a dose of medicine and survive, you need to earn $700 a day. You complete the first legal task and get as much as 10 cents.

Or you can start hacking banks, universities, factories, writing viruses. Information about this can be found in the underground magazine "Trash world news". In fact, you get a manual for the game, the guys even provided an option for those who want to get confused and print themselves a paper version of this manual.

Programming takes place in the likeness of assembler. The game is not in Russian, so here is the most intelligible replay in English that I found:

        Trailer

        MOLEK-SYNTEZ (2019)

This is a puzzle like Opus Magnum, only the action takes place in the future, 2092, and you create not an alchemical philosopher's stone, but real organic compounds: benzene, acetone, hydrochloric acid. Sometimes even drugs.

Stylistically the game is very similar to TIS-100, the same minimum number of effects in the game. There is no official translation for this game, but there is a crack. According to the tradition of this manufacturer, the game has leaderboards to compare how optimal the decisions of the players are. Here the dude talks about the game in detail, but in English. Apparently, the Russian-speaking community is not very active in MOLEK-SYNTEZ.

        Indie projects

4 completed indie games about algorithms and visual programming.

        Else Heart.Break() (2015)

A sandbox game where you can code. Right inside the game. Writing code is not the main mechanic, this game can be completed with a poor understanding of programming and completing basic simple quests according to the instructions. But if you know how to write code, it becomes much more interesting to play.

        Trailer

You have a main character named Sebastian, he moves to a new city, where at first everything looks like a normal rpg game. You can walk around the gloomy retro world, talk to people and complete quests. But if you understand programming, you can change the world for yourself. Almost any object, except people, can be programmed. Programming in the game takes place in a strange mixture of Python with something.

        Game overview

        PonyIsland (2016)

A game about understanding. The creepiest game I've ever seen. PonyIsland was created by Canadian indie developer Daniel Mullins.

The player finds himself in front of a screen of a broken old slot machine and is forced to play a buggy endless runner. To win, you need to "fix" the game. Very indie project, with minimal graphics. According to the story, the player gets access to the pseudo-code of the game, and with the help of visual programming (move down, loop, stop, etc.), bypass buggy code fragments, or get achievements in the game. In general, the essence of the game is to save your soul from the Devil.

        Trailer

        Human Resource Machine (2015)

A game from Tomorrow Corporation for those who love algorithms. The player appears as an employee of a corporation, where he must solve problems related to the movement and storage of green boxes with numbers. The player gradually learns commands like "inbox", "outbox", "copyto", "add", etc. to complete the task - basically just moving boxes around. The player goes through about 40 levels of puzzles, each level is a year of life in the office.

        Trailer

        7 Billion Humans (2018)

Continuation of the previous part, in the same visual design, with similar puzzles. Now you automate not your actions, but the actions of your subordinates who dream of working. Yes, their job also comes down to dragging the green number cubes.

        Trailer

        Baba Is You (2019)

Indie project of a Finnish developer. The game has some super reviews on Steam. The game requires you to manipulate the rules so that the player character can reach a certain goal. Baba is you, or rather this white blot-bunny on the screen. But you can change the rules and become a crab. Or a wall. Not so important, the main thing is to successfully complete the condition of the puzzle.

The game contains over 200 levels and has received several indie awards, and is considered by some game reviewers to be one of the best puzzle video games in recent years. The game has been released for PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.

        Games Editors

An understanding of algorithms and logic is an advantage in mastering editors like the ones I mention below. Even children can use the editors, there are built-in tutorials. But for an adult who knows programming, it will be easier and faster to understand the tools and start creating your own games.

        Dreams (2020)

Media Molecule used to release games with built-in editors, but this time they released an editor with built-in games. It turned out a whole game studio, with a tutorial, 3D modeling, visual programming, audio studio. In short, a whole game of making games. A creative sandbox where all scripts are created using flowcharts.

        Trailer

        Game Builder Garage (2021)

Editor for Nintendo Switch games. You can create a shooter, puzzle, three-dimensional platformer. The game cannot be made completely from scratch, the editor presents a finite assortment of objects, but visually the game will resemble Nintendo games.

According to Nintendo, the game consists of "Nodons" - creatures with their own characteristics that can be customized. You can place a hero on the screen, give him the desired parameters, set the environment and ways of interaction. With the help of Nodons, you can create something like an analogue of a logical interpreter. In the application, the developers included a training campaign for 7 lessons and test checkpoints.
