Child english learning software

Download LingoKids | iOS and Android

Lingokids is an educational app that aims to develop children’s knowledge of the English language. Upon opening Lingokids, the user is shown a delightful company splash screen in portrait mode. Lingokids has a content partnership with Oxford University Press which gives parents peace of mind from the largest university press in the world.

Is Lingokids a free app?

Yes, Lingokids offers a free app for kids to practice and learn English. The free version gives you access to 3 activities a day. The premium version gives you access to 600+ games, songs and videos.

Is Lingokids safe for kids?

LingoKids is safe for children and content is tailored to the age of your child. Targeted towards preschool children who are learning English as a second language. Younger children may need some guidance to play some of the games.

What is Lingokids

LingoKids is designed for children ages 2 to 8 to learn English vocabulary and to learn to speak English. It covers numbers, the alphabet, colors, shapes, foods, and many other topics of conversation. The kids’ area contains hundreds of pieces of content like games, videos and stories.

What's it about?

Lingokids offers lessons in three categories; words, phrases and sentences. Lessons vary from meal times, finding friends in the ocean, dancing flamenco and so much more.

The learning dashboard is very intuitive, easy to read and child-friendly. The child can see their avatar in the top left with a learning map displaying progress in the top right. The avatar in the top left offers further access to news, profile changes and a parent’s area. The developers could offer an option for the user to create their own avatar to personalise the profile even further. Additional profiles can be added for multiple children where the dashboard can then switch between users. The ‘news’ area provides access to a wealth of information about new developer features, tests, the curriculum, progress reports, and further profile settings. We really appreciate that the developers have created a level of security to enter this section although typing three numbers could be rather easy for a child to access. The developers should consider using a multiplication sum as a parental lock. The information in this section is of great educational value and well presented. It is noted that this section of the application reverts to the portrait mode. We were also unsure if there was an option to turn the music off throughout the application.

The ‘Book’ icon in the bottom right of the Home dashboard displays a sticker book for the user to collect a selection of stickers. These include various characters from the Lingokids family. Each work unit can be scrolled from right to left within the main dashboard. We did find that some of the units were incredibly easy for the age group that we had entered. However, the user experience, characters and animations are stunning. Our users enjoyed the fact that stickers were awarded every time a unit of work was completed, ideal for motivation and classroom competition. The units consist of a variety of different games from matching stickers to jigsaws to letter tracing, great for fine motor skills.

Our users really enjoyed using the application, however, there were too many menus at times and many of our users got lost within the app. We were also unsure why the application still offered such simple games for a child profile of aged 8. The free version of the application offers a sample program which include 4 games, 5 videos, 4 My Teacher lessons, 6 Writing lessons and 4 sets of Supplemental Materials. To use further features such as the progress reports and further content parents much sign up and subscribe to the application.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents can access an account option by using the login in the top right or bypass this by accessing the app straight away where the parent is asked to tailor the user program with the child’s age and level of English. An email and account is required after this stage. Once the program has been created and the user has logged in the screen reverts to portrait mode and delivers a wonderful, fun and engaging animated sequence.

How will parents benefit?

Learning within this application is great fun and does happen naturally. However, we would like to see more structure to the leaning especially with the basics such as phonics and letter construction. Parents will find the added reports ideal to track the progress of their child, however, the navigation in this area can be a little cumbersome at times.

What Lingokids could improve on

We were concerned that the application tends to be more gameplay than learning although the app description suggests “that a child's brain is especially apt to learn different languages before a cognitive process called "neuronal pruning" begins in later childhood. The more a child is exposed to various languages, the more easily they can become bilingual. With our platform, children learn without realising it, thanks to our playful and fun approach.”

The developers have clearly worked hard on the content of the app and provided an array of differentiation. The characters and animations are very appealing and the music is engaging and quirky. The application will certainly appeal more to the younger age groups.

Overall rating

Lingokids is a collection of fun and engaging resources to help young children learn English as a second language and for pre-school readiness when it comes to Native-English speakers. Children learn at their own pace with new games and content is updated on a regular basis. This application comes highly recommended by the Educational App Store.

BOOKR Class - Learn English Review

What is BOOKR Class?

The application opens promptly in landscape mode displaying a beautiful ‘Splash screen’ followed by the tutorial guide. This tutorial guide explains how to select a book, switch narration, highlight text, pause, jump pages, play games, search for a book using topics/keywords and much more. Once the tutorial has been watched the user is required to register for the application. It is noted that this can be skipped. We recommend that the user registers to enable them to gain the full benefit of the application. Students can also use a student code from their teacher to access the application. By-pass the parental gateway by completing the sum and read the Privacy Policy of the application carefully.

Users now have a choice to choose their roles. For this review, we will choose the role of a teacher. Create an account using your details and add a child using the ‘+’ icon. Enter the details of the child including name, user name, password and date of birth. Teachers can sign up for a 2-week trial and enjoy full access to the BOOKR Class App, BOOKR Class Desktop App and the teacher dashboard. Once complete the user can choose a profile to enter the library as either the teacher or the child. Once selected the application provides a video tutorial on how to browse the library, select a book, use the ‘My Family’ dashboard and more.

Once in the library view, the user has several options. ‘My Profile' can be selected in the top left to gain access to your account details where you can change passwords, monitor the progress of children or students that have been added, switch subscriptions, change settings such as auto narration, text highlighting and UI sounds, access the app’s tutorials and contact support. This part of the application also allows access to BOOKR’s ‘Read methodology’ which explains the concept, passion and pedagogy of BOOKR.

Returning to library view the user can search for a book using several methods. Sliding the books across the main page displays recommendations. Tap the

magnifying glass to search by topic, keywords, narration and much more. Topics include colours and shapes, alphabet, numbers, people, nature, home, travel, shopping, food and drink, lifestyle, hobbies, time and weather, health, science, school and work. Users can also search for books via levels from level 1 to 6.

Once a book has been selected the application will display the books cover, description, author, BOOKR level, coins available for the child once read and as a Lexile score. The Lexile Score is a popular method used by US schools to measure a student reader’s ability. A Lexile measure is a valuable tool for teachers, parents, and students. It serves two unique functions: it is the measure of how difficult a text is OR a student’s reading ability level. A student receives his or her Lexile measure from one of two ways: taking a school-administered SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) test, which is specifically designed to measure Lexile or reading ability OR by taking a standardized reading test which converts the reader’s results to a Lexile measure. If a student gets a 550L then he or she is a 550 level Lexile reader.

Enter the book using the ‘Play’ icon next to the collectable badge in the bottom right of the screen. The user can set Text Highlighting and narration on or off. The books and wonderfully illustrated and a real pleasure to read. The text and narration are clear and colourful. Pages can be paused, moved on or returned to using the arrows on the right- and left-hand sides. The book finishes with a range of games such as find the words using the illustrations, match the words to the places, listening skills, jigsaw puzzles, sentence structure and many more. Each complete game is rewarded with a series of stars and recommendations of other books that the user may enjoy.

When using the application as a child they get to choose their avatar from a range of characters. The child can test their knowledge using the 30-question test based on comprehension, illustrated words, vocabulary, word association and sentence structure. Once the test is completed a Level is awarded to the child along with a Lexile Score which can be seen in the teacher’s or parent’s dashboard. Children can view their profile, reading time, consecutive reading days, coin collection and badges in the children’s dashboard. This information is excellent for parents or teachers who wish to monitor the progress of their child or student.

The teachers’ dashboard that supports the application is an excellent platform for managing students and monitoring their progress. Teachers can add students and fellow teachers, produce flashcards for further learning, assign karaoke singalong themes and manage the books within the digital library. This support platform has been thought through and provides a versatile dashboard that accompanies the application well.

What we love about BOOKR Class.

It was reassuring that the application provides some different languages and an easy to navigate interface. This application delivers on many levels and we particularly enjoyed the following:

• The developers have focused on the user experience, especially with the in-app tutorial guides. We found these informative and engaging.

• The games after the books were engaging, challenging and provided a real educational focus.

• Our users love the coin and badge collections, this would certainly create competition amongst siblings or fellow students.

• Our users love the notifications for motivation.

• The process to sign up for the application was seamless with a very straightforward interface.

• The teacher dashboard that accompanies the application is a pleasure to use.

We particularly like the ability to monitor each student's Lexile level, coins gained, book read and time spent reading.

• The teacher dashboard also provided a useful insight into each digital book which includes level, Lexile level, Min/Max age, Genre, Topic, Grammar tense, accent, pages, coins, badges, reading length and topic tags. This could help when searching for classroom topic titles, keywords and grammar skills.

• The placement test is an excellent way for teachers to gauge their students from the outset.

Is BOOKR Class easy to use?

BOOKR Class is a versatile application with menu systems and features that are very easy to navigate. The application has a clean look to the interface and the graphics are user friendly. At no point does the screen look over cluttered. Each of the menus can be easily accessed and the digital library works seamlessly. The application and teacher dashboard support each other well and provide a versatile platform that requires little training.

How will the user benefit?

It’s great fun! Our users found the application a delight to use and kept reading some of the books again and again. They particularly enjoyed the variety of gameplay at the end of the books and enjoyed demonstrating their vocabulary skills and understanding of the book. Knowing that the games provided coins enabling our users to gain a real focus when reading the book.

How will teachers benefit?

Teachers can set their students off and running with the application with very little support from the outset. Teachers will welcome the teacher dashboard where multiple student profiles can be added and monitored. The flashcards are ideal for further learning and classroom ideas which can also be downloaded as a PDF. The Karaoke songs are a delight to watch and listen to with a range of songs including classics such as Humpty Dumpty, Five Little Monkeys and Head, shoulders, knees and toes.

How will parents benefit?

Parents can set their child off and running with the application with very little support from the outset once a profile has been created. The range of content is good for differentiated learning and the support from the website is welcomed. Parents can have a piece of mind knowing that the digital books are age and Lexile level appropriate with no-app purchases or adverts.

How much does BOOKR Class cost?

BOOKR Class is a free application on a trial basis. Once the trial has expired the application is available as a monthly or yearly subscription providing constant updates.

Is BOOKR Class safe to use?

Yes. Although the application does not require an account and email to start with theapplication does not contain any offensive elements or 3rd party adverts. Sensitive areas are also protected by a parental gateway lock.

10 tips to motivate your children to learn English

Have you ever wondered how you can motivate your child to learn English? It is easier to teach English from scratch with children when they themselves want it.

After all, it is not enough for children just to say that English will help them in life, the whole world speaks it, or install an application, give them a smartphone and send them to learn English. They will not understand you or they will play games, and they will ignore the application that you downloaded to them. Children need a slightly different approach. We offer you ten tips on how you can guide, push, motivate your child to study English. nine0003

Motivate and learn basic English with children

  • Be enthusiastic and involved in your child's learning

Be enthusiastic about language learning. If your child sees you reading, watching movies and speaking English, he will be inspired and imitate you. Actively involve yourself in learning English with your child, without expecting them to learn on their own. Encouragement and support for your child will boost their self-confidence and motivation. nine0020

  • Make learning fun and enjoyable

Learning a language should be fun and rewarding. Try to include an element of fun in your English learning activities. Naturally, children love to play in real and virtual life. And your child will be happy to play another interesting, exciting game with you, if you offer. Try card games (Memory), action games (Simon Says), board games (Snakes, Ladders). Use your child's sense of competition as a motivator, for example, you can play games not only with your child, but also with his friends. nine0020

  • Start with your child's interests

Think about your child's personality, interests, and things he likes. Very active children may enjoy playing action games, quieter children may prefer word games or card games. If your child loves sports, they will love stories, vocabulary games about sports. Choose from a wide range of topics at Learn English Kids.

  • Let your child choose

Participation in the selection process is a great motivation. Let your child choose situations, subjects, etc. that he feels comfortable with in English. For example, you can encourage your child to read in English by choosing English books from the local library, bookstore, or online. nine0020

  • Assess your child's mood

Try to find the right time to encourage your child to practice English. Your child should be receptive and alert, not tired and irritable during class. If you insist on learning English when the child is tired, then the effect will be minimal, and you can also put the child in a stressful situation, which will reflect badly on his desire to study English in the future. If, after starting classes, you notice that your child is not receptive, it is better to try later than to force him to continue. nine0020

  • Role play

Children love role play and use their imagination. Suggest some game situations. For example, you are in a toy store, a bus, a restaurant, etc., ask your child to take turns doing different functions (for example, serve customers in a store), help your child if he does not know or has forgotten a word. If he uses phrases in his native language, repeat what he said in English. Make the situation more meaningful by using real objects, such as toys for a toy store, chairs for a bus, a table for a restaurant. The more enthusiastically you play your part, the more motivated your child will be! nine0020

  • Praise your child for homework

Children are often reluctant to do homework or attend school. Establish a regular homework schedule that allows your child to choose when and where they study. Praise your child for all the efforts he makes, rather than criticizing him. This will help your child become more confident. A child who likes English will want to study on his own.

  • Use apps and online resources

Even the most reluctant learners will enjoy playing the game on the tablet and learning English with it. We adults may think of the next English learning app as a learning tool, but children treat everything as a game.

  • Share experiences

Encourage older children to help younger siblings practice English. Why not let your child choose an English language movie and invite friends or family to watch it? Arrange the chairs to turn your living room into a movie theater! Make tickets in English. This will give you an opportunity to practice your writing. Many children enjoy performing. Invite them to put on a play or puppet show, or sing some English songs for the family. nine0020

  • Find ways for your child to communicate

If your child has an English-speaking friend or acquaintance with whom he will communicate in English, this will further spur him to learn the language. After all, now he has a completely weighty, real and understandable reason. If you do not have foreign acquaintances, you can find classes for children in your city where your child can communicate in English with peers. We will help you with this. Green Country is the best choice for your little one. Here, in English courses, your child will be able to practice their skills and communicate with peers. Don't wait another Monday, enroll your child in a course now. Learn English with children from scratch in a fun, interesting, productive way. nine0003
