Sunshine Compound Words: Craftivity, Word Lists, & Organizers
I may be in the minority here, but I actually really love teaching grammar! Even though the topics themselves aren’t always the most exciting (there are a select few people in this world who get legitimately pumped about prepositions or rules for commas), there are a ton of possibilities to MAKE it fun for kids.
Most recently, my students have been reviewing compound words. There is no shortage of ideas for teaching these (you can easily get lost down the Pinterest rabbit hole), but I have noticed that a lot of activities focus mainly on identifying or forming compound words. In this post, I’ll be sharing resources to help students identify their meaning based on the two individual words (per the Common Core standard for second grade):
Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
I have found that a very effective way to zero in on the meaning is to have students find connections in different compound words that share one of the same individual words (or base words). For example, taking a word like “ball” and having them analyze the differences in meaning between words in the same compound word family (basketball, baseball, ballroom, ballplayer, etc).
Since it can be a bit of a challenge to think of lots of examples of those types of word families off the top of your head, I compiled a bunch of word lists of compound words that share a common base word:
They are just simple word cards, but I been able to get a TON of use out of them. Here are just a few ways to utilize these cards:
Word List
They have been super useful when I just need to think of examples of compound words (for an anchor chart or pretty much any other lesson or activity on compound words). They’re a quick and easy reference!
Mix Pair Share
Give each student a word card. They stand up and walk around the room and have to try and group themselves up by what their words have in common (the base word). Once in groups, have them discuss what their words have in common and the different meanings of each of their words.
Blind Sort
This is best done as a review when students have learned about compound words previously. Put students in partners or small groups and give them the cards (cut by individual word). Don’t tell them that the words are compound words or tell them how to sort them. They have to figure out what the words have in common and find a way that they can sort them into groups.
Word Sort
Use them as a word sort for literacy centers (students have to sort the words into groups by the same base word).
Sometimes for the word sorts, I’ll also include words that are NOT compound words so that students can practice identifying the difference and sort them into separate groups.
After completing any of the above activities, students can choose a word or words to use to complete one of these graphic organizers. In my own class, I pair them with the word card sort as a literacy center.
I also have my students do a simple craftivity that makes for a nice visual hanging up in the classroom. Going along with the compound word “sunshine” that is featured on the graphic organizers, they each make their own compound word sun.
I make copies of the template on yellow or orange Astrobrights paper. If you wanted to have students color the suns, they could also be copied on white paper.
I utilize the same word cards from the activities mentioned above, except this time I cut them into strips, leaving all the words with the same base word in the same strip.
I verbally give each student a base word and place the strip for that base word face down on their desk. For example, I’ll tell a student, “Your word is rain” and place the strip with all the compound words for rain face down on their desk.
Students write their base word on the line in the middle of the sun. On their own, they think of as many compound words as they can that have that base word in it. For example, “raincoat,” “rainbow,” etc. They write the other half of the base word on the rays of the sun (“coat” on one ray, “bow” on another, etc). If students have trouble thinking of compound words, that’s what the word strip is there for. They can just flip it over for help/ideas if they get stuck.
Then they cut out the sun, and…all done! Simple as that. You can display them on a spring or summer themed bulletin board, or if you have windows in your classroom, they make the room look bright and sunny when taped to the windows.
If you’re interested in doing any or all of these compound word activities with your class, the word cards (total time saver!), graphic organizers, and template for the compound word suns can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store, and also right here in the shop on my website:

Another great thing about having these displayed in my classroom is that when I see sunshine, I naturally think summer (and how it will be here soon)! Have you started your countdown to the end of the school year yet?
The grammatical basis of a sentence - definition and examples
What is a sentence as a unit of speech
A sentence is a word or a combination of words that contains a message, question, or motivation (order, advice, request). The sentence has intonation and semantic completeness.
A sentence can consist of several words that are combined with each other, or of one word:
- The long-awaited summer has come.
- Summer. Sun. Wind.
All words in the sentence are called members of the sentence . They are divided into:
- Main - subject and predicate. The proposal cannot exist without the main members, or at least one of them, since they express the main thought and idea.
- Minor - addition, definition and circumstance. They complement and clarify the main idea of the proposal.

What is the grammatical basis of a sentence: definition
The grammatical basis of a sentence is the semantic center, the main part of the sentence, which consists of its main members: subject and predicate. In two-part sentences, it includes both main members, in one-part sentences, one main member.
In most cases, the grammatical basis is independent: if you exclude all minor members, the essence of the sentence will still be clear.
Remember!
You cannot put a comma between the subject and the predicate.
All sentences can be divided into several types depending on the grammatical basis.
According to the composition of the grammatical basis
According to the composition of the grammatical basis, sentences are two-part or one-part.
Two-part sentences are those in which both main members of the sentence are present, for example:
- The cat is sleeping. Birds are singing.
- Dad went to work.
- The sun appeared in the sky.
one-part sentences have only one main member - either the subject or the predicate. Examples of such offers:
- It was getting dark. It was evening.
- Heat. July.
- How good!
According to the number of grammatical bases
If a sentence has one grammatical base, it is called simple . Examples of simple sentences:
- The girl went for a walk with the dog.
- The hare galloped off into the forest.
- The sun appeared in the sky.
If there are two or more grammatical bases, then we are dealing with complex sentence. Let's turn the simple sentences from the example above into complex ones:
- The girl went for a walk with the dog, while her brother stayed at home.
- The hare rode off into the forest, and the hunters were left with nothing.
- At last the rain stopped and the sun appeared in the sky.
By the presence of minor members
Depending on whether the proposal has minor members, it may be widespread or non-common.
Uncommon are sentences that have only a grammatical basis and nothing else. For example:
- The girl is walking.
- The hare jumps.
- The rain has stopped.
In common sentences, in addition to the grammatical basis, there are also secondary members: additions, definitions, circumstances. Let's expand on the examples above so that the sentences become common:
- A girl is walking with her friends.
- The hare jumps on the lawn.
- By evening the rain had stopped.

How to determine the grammatical basis of a sentence
To identify the grammatical basis of a sentence, you need to find out who or what it is about.
Questions to determine the grammatical basis: “who?”, “what?”.
Example 1:
The sun has already risen over the sea.
Example 2:
We've been playing all day.

How can the subject be expressed
The subject is the main word in the sentence. It means and expresses some object, the action of which denotes the predicate. It is customary to distinguish it with one line.
Finding the subject in a sentence is easy - this is the main word in the sentence. It denotes the subject in question. The subject answers the questions: “who?”, “what?”.
If you are looking for the subject through the predicate, then you need to ask the question: “who/what is doing?”.
The subject can be expressed:
- The noun is the most common variant.
Girl came to school late.
- Pronoun: personal, negative, interrogative, indefinite and relative.
I (personal) listened to the conversation;
Nobody (negative) saw that (relative) happened.
- A part of speech that has become a noun. It can be an adjective ( Bathroom was clean ), participle ( Arrived checked into hotel ), adverb ( Tomorrow finally came ).
- Indefinite form of the verb (infinitive).
It is forbidden to run along the corridor.
- Numeral - ordinal ( The first left class ) or cardinal ( Two went to the left ).
- An indecomposable phrase, for example:
- geographical name ( Russian Federation is a big country ),
- the name of the institution ( Ministry of Defense is the executive authority ),
- a set expression or a catchphrase ( a beautiful girl was waiting in the tower ),
- a noun with the meaning of quantity (or numeral) in combination with a noun in the genitive case ( many crows circled the sky . ten students fit on the bench ),
- indefinite pronoun and adjective ( Something new happened today ),
- a noun or pronoun in the nominative case, associated with a noun in the instrumental case with the union with ( Mom and daughter went to the store. I am walking with friends on the street ).
- The whole structure, if it is mentioned in the proposal.
"I love you" , whispered the letter in the night.
- Any word that is given as an example.
Would is a particle.
How can the predicate be expressed
The second main component of the grammatical basis is the predicate.
The predicate is the main member of the sentence along with the subject. It expresses the action of the main word, its description or state. It is distinguished by two parallel lines.
The predicate can be simple (consist of one verb) and compound (of two or more words).
Examples of simple verbal predicates:
- Man was walking across the road.
- Peter seemed nervous.
- Mother was sitting by the window .
Compound predicates are verbal and nominal.
A compound verb predicate consists of a linking verb and an infinitive.
A copula is a verb that agrees with the subject in tense, person, and number. Short adjectives can also act as a link ( glad, ready, must, obliged, forced, intends ).
Examples of compound verb predicates:
- You must leave this ridiculous idea.
- I love to draw .
- Guest was about to leave after three.
A compound nominal predicate consists of a linking verb and a nominal part.
The most common verb is "to be" ("is") , it can be omitted in the present tense, but is always implied. Examples:
- She was a good friend - She (is) a good friend .
- Raspberry is berry .
- Frigate - ship with three masts.
The nominal part in the compound nominal predicate can be expressed:
- noun
- adjective in the nominative or instrumental case ( Youth inexperienced . The young man was inexperienced ),
- comparative adjective ( The young man was more inexperienced ) or short form ( The young man inexperienced ),
- numeral ( I was the first in queue ),
- pronoun ( House became my ),
- adverb ( Tomorrow it will be warm ),
- communion ( Contract was signed ),
- indivisible phrase ( Boy was short ),
- phraseologism ( They and their brother - do not spill water ).
There may also be a compound predicate consisting of several verbs or verbs and nominal parts.
- I would like to become a doctor .
- They were about to start studying .
Remember!
If the subject and predicate are expressed by a noun, numeral or infinitive, then a dash can be put between them. For example: My brother is a student. To love means to care .

LCD Solnechny Gorod Residences: prices for apartments in the residential complex Solnechny Gorod Residences from the developer Setl Group in the Krasnoselsky district, reviews, construction progress
Date of renovation April 28, 2022
The residential complex continues to be on the White List of new buildings, which is not surprising, given the high reputation of Setl Group (the highest score in the rating of developers). The project is progressing without delay. Buildings 3 and 4 are being prepared for commissioning. As of April, both houses have been built, internal work is being completed, it is still necessary to complete the improvement of the adjacent territory. So far, the commissioning of these buildings in the third quarter of this year does not raise any questions. Things are not bad with buildings 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3, which should be completed before the end of this year. The houses have been built, facade and interior work is underway. The remaining buildings are now at various stages of construction, but it is premature to consider their readiness, since the delivery of these houses is scheduled for 2023 and subsequent years.
Low-rise residential quarter "Solnechny Gorod Residences" is in fact an integral part of the larger "Solnechny Gorod" microdistrict, which in many respects has already been built. They have a common social infrastructure. Of course, it has not yet been fully created, but a number of facilities in the multi-storey microdistrict are operational and accessible to residents of the low-rise part of the housing estate. They began to build their own kindergarten in the Residences. It is currently in the construction phase of the ground floor.
The weak point of this whole location is transport accessibility. Metro station "Pr. Veterans" is far away. The appearance of new metro stations in this direction (the same "Sosnovaya Polyana") cannot be expected before 2030. Road congestion is high. Of course, with the extension of Veteranov Ave., it became easier to leave the location, but no one canceled traffic jams during rush hours on the way to the central part of the city. However, the strengths and weaknesses of the residential complex and the location in which it is being built are described in detail in the opinions of the portal for previous years. Experts rated the residential complex with average points for the location and quality of the project, and gave the highest score for reliability. Thus, "Sunny City Residences" entered the top eight in the ranking of low-rise residential complexes.
The project is large-scale, there are many buildings, so there is no shortage of free apartments at the moment, their number is measured in hundreds. Prices currently start at 4.25 million for a 24-meter studio. Approximately at the same level, the cost of the proposed housing in the multi-storey "Sunny City". For those who choose an apartment in a low-rise format for themselves, it makes sense to pay attention to other low-rise projects in the Peterhof direction. Among them, Lyubograd, comparable in price, which is being built by the KVS company (score “A” in the rating of developers), as well as Veren Village Strelna from VEREN GROUP. True, this is a business class and prices are higher there. Both named residential complexes are included in the White List of new buildings. In addition, a complex of townhouses "Algorithm Strelna" from "Algorithm Development" is being built nearby, but it is not yet for sale. Well, two more low-rise projects are waiting to enter the market: the residential complex "on Narodnogo Opolcheniya Avenue", which was also planned by Setl Group and "Provence" by Navis Development Group (rating "C-"). They are still at the design stage.
Update date March 19, 2021
"Sunny City Residences" is one of those projects that there is no doubt about. Reliable construction company — Setl Group has the highest A+ score in the rating of St. Petersburg developers. Received project financing from Bank Saint-Petersburg. In the same bank, money paid by equity holders for apartments is placed on escrow accounts. And there they will be stored until the houses are put into operation. In a word, potential buyers have no reason to fear. Construction is proceeding normally. As of the beginning of March, three buildings of the first stage have been erected, facade and internal work is continuing in them. In the second or third quarter of this year, they should be put into operation, the developer undertook to transfer the keys before the end of this year. There is enough time left. As for buildings 3 and 4, they are still at the stage of construction of the first floor, but the commissioning of the second stage is only in the middle of next year, and the keys should be handed over at the end of 2022, so everything is going according to schedule and there are no concerns.
In the previous opinion of the portal, we analyzed in detail the features of the residential complex, the advantages and disadvantages of the location in which it is being built. Let's add to this that in November last year there was an event that the residents of the "Sunny City" and neighboring new buildings to the west of Sosnovaya Polyana had long been waiting for. Traffic was opened along a new section of Veteranov Avenue from Pionerstroy Street to Budyonny Avenue. This significantly unloaded the Peterhof highway and made it easier for car owners and public transport to leave this location to the center and back. This is especially convenient for the Residences, because the exit to Veteranov Ave. is very close to them.
The experts included the residential complex in the top ten in the rating of new buildings in the Krasnoselsky district. The location, of course, is not without its drawbacks, but otherwise it is comfortable modern housing in an attractive low-rise format at average prices. Most of the apartments in the buildings of the first stage have been sold, there are few offers left, but there is still a choice in the second stage. Steady demand is understandable: there are no low-rise residential complexes nearby. Apartments in the neighborhood can only be bought in high-rise buildings: in the Solnechny Gorod residential complex, which is also being built by Setl Group, and in the commissioned English Mile residential complex from Glorax Development (developer rating “A-”). Their prices are about the same. If we consider more broadly - the entire Peterhof direction, then further from the city along the St. Petersburg Highway there are two low-rise projects comparable to the Residences in terms of the level and cost of apartments. These are residential complexes "Lubograd" of the company "KVS" (rating "A") and "Veren Village Strelna" from VEREN GROUP.
Update date February 07, 2020
The reliability of this project is not in doubt. Setl Group is one of the largest players in the St. Petersburg construction market. The number of houses built by the company is very large. Deadlines are respected, quality is provided at a quite decent level. Not surprisingly, according to the sum of all indicators, market experts gave Setl Group the highest score of “A +” and made it one of the leaders in the rating of developers in the Northern capital. As of the first ten days of February, construction is at an early stage. The buildings of the first stage will be handed over in the middle of next year. Considering that the houses are four-story, the builder has enough time at his disposal.
Let's focus on the location of the residential complex and its prospects. Ultimately, this is what determines the attractiveness of the object now and in the future. The residential complex is being built in the fields, away from the park areas. This, of course, is a minus. Although Sosnovaya Polyana Park is not very far away, and when the local quarters become more habitable, it will become easier to go for a walk there.
With the social infrastructure here, too, things are not in the best way. There is a comprehensive development of the territory, so everything is created right on the go. Something is already there, but the process of establishing a truly comfortable life will take more than one year.
In terms of transport, the project is negatively affected by the indefinite freeze of plans to build a subway in this direction. The development of new territories was carried out taking into account projects for the development of the subway, but they eventually cut their wings. There is no specifics yet with the plan to build a high-speed tram line in the direction of Petrodvorets. If this happens, it will become easier for local residents to get to the metro, although the line will not be close to the new settlers of the “residence”.
In fact, there is no alternative to transport here yet. The exit to the Ring Road is relatively close and those who have their own cars will not be difficult to get to any area of the city (of course, taking into account the traffic jams factor). For those who use public transport, the main breakthrough is the extension of Veteranov Ave. to Budyonny Ave. By the time the first stage of the residential complex is completed, traffic will be open here and get to the metro station “Pr. Veterans" will become easier. But then there will still be difficulties. This station is considered the busiest in Europe, and getting on a train here during peak hours is a whole problem.
The description of the residential complex on our portal details all its features, the proposed comfort options, as well as the presented range of apartments. Note that their layouts provide an above-average level of comfort. Add to this the low number of storeys of the residential complex and we can say that Setl Group has brought to the market of this location an offer that has almost no analogues. This is a kind of variant of the European low-rise suburb. Nearby, only one similar project is being implemented - this is the residential complex "Veren Village Strelna" of the VEREN GROUP company.
