8 Things To Consider Before Writing
- Keep it simple: You do not have to use flowery language. Use simple words to express your feelings freely and tell him how special he is. Try to make it conversational, as though you are speaking to him in person.
- Format: There are no strict rules for formatting the letter. Again, the aim is to keep it simple and endearing. You could start with “Dear… / Son” or something adorable, such as his nickname, and end it with a simple “Love” or Mom/ Dad.”
- It should be handwritten: Text it or email it if you have no other options. But writing it in your beautiful handwriting can have a more powerful effect. He could even save it as a keepsake.
- Use examples: Include details of those times when he made you proud or happy. Reminisce about his toddler or teenage years and describe those special moments that you would like to relive with him.
- Use a simile or metaphor: Using a few similes or metaphors can spice up your letter a bit. Do not overdo it, though.
- Do not worry about the length: The length of the letter doesn’t matter. Even a simple note that you sneak into his lunchbox could mean a lot to him.
- Include positive words: Sprinkle your letter with positive words such as love, joy, happiness, faith, sacrifice, pride, enjoy, trust, believe, faith, wonderful, promise, genius, and champ.

I Believe in You (4): The Letters of Encouragement
This is the last post in a series about a leadership camp activity where I asked parents to write their kids letters of encouragement, confidence and trust and a promise to be there for them always.
I ran this camp for 2 years in a row. Each time, there were about 30 students from 5 different schools. This leadership camp was run by an organization for which I am the QLD State Coordinator, called Together for Humanity.
In this camp, we wanted the kids to recognize their strengths, develop their leadership skills, identify their support structure and learn how to take a social stand in their school, community and one day, in leading social change.
First, I wrote about what happened when I asked the parents to write a letter to their kids. Then, I wrote about what happened to the kids when they opened their letters and how hard it was for them to believe they had been genuinely written by their parents.
Last week, I wrote about how the kids confused being proud – recognizing and sharing your strengths and achievements – with bragging – being arrogant and full of yourself, and how 12 hours and a letter helped me take them to a different place.
Today, I want to show you some of the letters parents wrote to their kids.
I have left them intact, other than names and other personal details.
These parents only had my sample letter to help them with ideas. I hope you will be in a better position after reading more letters and knowing how kids responded and how meaningful it was for each of them to receive such a letter.
At the end of camp, when we asked the kids to list the most meaningful things they had experienced at camp, the letter of encouragement was at the top of their list.

I got home at 6:30pm from camp. Early the next morning, I got this letter in my inbox from one of the mothers:
Dear Ronit,
Just a quick note to you and the team at Together for Humanity to say thank you so much for asking my son to your camp. He came home a very positive and happy young man. His biggest highlight was being treated as an equal and the “debate”.
I’m sure that he will continue to put into practice the values he has learned and reconsolidated for many years to come.

You know what? I think you can do it too. You can shift your kids from being afraid and shy to thinking good things about themselves, being proud to say good things about themselves and accepting compliments, because leaders cannot survive if they minimize themselves and we sure need more leaders to make this world a better place.
Try, it is just a letter. You do not need your kids to go to camp to write this kind of letter. You can write good things about them anytime and give them permission to feel your love, embrace your compliments and cherish your letter for years to come, especially in times of doubts.
You do not have to wait until your kids become teenagers to do it, either. You can do it much earlier and give them treasures to keep in their treasure box, to reopen later and remember that they are loved and that you will be there for them as long as you can.
This way, you will make sure your kids will never say, “My parents never said ‘I love you'” They will have written proof.

Some families write letters of gratitude to friends or relatives for something (eg a gift), some do not. In both cases, there are reasons for that. Some parents believe that handwritten letters and greeting cards are outdated, so you should not teach them to write children if they themselves do not show interest in it. Others see thank you letters and greeting cards as a courtesy gesture. They were taught this as children, and they want to teach it to their children.
There can be many opinions about showing gratitude. But, if you teach your child to write thank you letters and greeting cards, it can benefit him. First of all, such an activity teaches the child to show a sense of gratitude.
The benefits of thank you notes for children
A sense of gratitude. When a child writes a thank you note, he thinks of the love and care the other person has shown him.
Of course, if a child is presented with a gift, then this itself gives him joy and becomes an exciting event in his life. But writing a thank you letter makes him think that there is also a manifestation of love and care behind it.
Thanks. When a child writes thank you letters, what matters to him is not what he received from another person, but the very fact that he was taken care of and his feeling of gratitude for it. How to teach a child to write thank you notes
Talk to him about the importance of showing gratitude. For example, after receiving a gift, a child may be fascinated by it. Pay attention to the fact that the person who gave the gift spent a lot of time choosing the gift, packing and delivering it.
Ask your child how the other person can tell if they liked the gift. This way you will lead him to the need to write a thank you letter.
Tell him that his letter will make it clear that the gift has been received and appreciated.
Find a way to express gratitude that is appropriate for your child's age. A small child who cannot write yet can draw a picture, and one of the parents can add the text to it: "Sasha drew this picture for you as a thank you for your birthday present." You can also use postcards with ready-made text, in which the child just needs to enter the name of the addressee. This method is not so personal, but for a small child it can be a good start. Older children should write a thank you text on their own.
Let the child be creative . Not all children are good at putting their thoughts on paper. But if you don't let your child be creative, the thank you note will look like you wrote it. Give the child an idea (for example, tell him to mention why he liked the gift), but let him formulate his own thoughts.
Explain to your child that showing gratitude is important. It is important to show gratitude for what you are given from the bottom of your heart, even if the material value of the gift is not very high. And even if the child didn’t really like the gift, you should thank the person who gave it. This is important for him, because he did it with love and care.
