how to behave at a meeting and how to help the brood

There are many ducks in the capital - mallards and shelducks. Now they just brought out the chicks and take care of them. But is it necessary to help mother ducks and little ducklings? Vladimir Viktorovich Marchenkov, a biologist of the Mospriroda, spoke about how everything works in the wild.

- Ducks often nest on porches, low roofs, sometimes even on balconies. Downy ducklings weigh little, and the down provides them with the opportunity to plan, so these chicks easily get out even from the nest on a hill after their mother, - says Vladimir Viktorovich.

How to help ducklings?

When all the chicks have left the nest, the duck leads the brood to the nearest body of water. Usually they safely reach the target, however, due to the large number of these birds in the ZAO, they often nest far from the water - the nearest park can be several kilometers away. Birds have to get to the Meshchersky Pond, Michurinets Pond, Ochakovsky Ponds and other bodies of water.

- A duck with ducklings can easily get to the water, but there is one problem - the roads. If there were no roads, they would have nothing to fear, says Marchenkov.

If you spot a duck with ducklings on the road and realize that the birds are trying to cross to the other side, you should try to stop the traffic and help the brood to cross to the other side.

- Of course, such assistance is associated with great risk. But drivers usually favorably treat a request to let animals through, so the main thing is to be careful, Vladimir Viktorovich advises.

Another way to help ducks is to properly walk the dogs in natural areas. A leash and a muzzle are the pet owner's best friends. The fact is that the dog, hiding in the thick grass for just a few seconds, can manage to crush a duckling or other chick.

A disservice: how not to help ducks

Most people are very happy that animals live in the city, however, this is not always good. According to the expert, the crowding of animals leads to some problems - which means that natural selection should not be interfered with.

- About 30-40 years ago, when I passed by a pond and saw one or two ducks there, it was perceived as a real event! Now, several dozen individuals live on any reservoir, and we are not particularly surprised when we meet a mallard. They do not even fly away for the winter - the food supply allows them to comfortably stay in the capital's water bodies all year round. This shows that the ecological situation is in order. But there is a potential problem here, - the specialist biologist is sure.

The crowding of ducks adversely affects the microbiota of the reservoir - a large amount of droppings can damage it. This will lead to the death of a number of plants, small animals and algae. And when the ducks literally "sit on each other's heads", dangerous diseases spread very quickly in such a reservoir.

- Ducks suffer from psittacosis and other diseases that can not only cause the death of an entire population, but also be dangerous to humans. So nature regulates the number of individuals on its own, so that trouble does not happen in the future. That is why I am opposed to installing special small ramps for ducklings that need to get out of the water - this interferes with the favorable course of natural selection. It is conceived by nature that only the strongest individuals should live to maturity and be able to reproduce, so you should not interfere in this process, - Vladimir Viktorovich explained his position.

Ducks also like to nest in close proximity to humans - these can be not only canopies or low roofs, but even balconies in business centers and residential buildings. Do not encourage such behavior: by doing so, you can harm both the brood and yourself.

- It is worth removing the "building material" even when the duck is just starting to make a nest, and certainly not to allow laying. Firstly, excrement, branches and fluff can cause allergies in people, up to severe cases, and secondly, you will do a disservice to ducklings that have grown up in close proximity to humans. If a bird sees people nearby from a very young age, it will understand that bipeds are not dangerous. But, of course, not all people are supportive of animals, and this gullibility can play a cruel joke on a bird, says Marchenkov.

Bread - fight

Compassionate people often want to feed waterfowl, and they do it the old fashioned way, taking a dried loaf from home. However, doing so is strictly prohibited.

- Firstly, it is absolutely impossible to feed ducks in the summer - this way you kill their instincts that make them move and look for food on their own. In summer, there is enough food on any reservoir, you don’t have to worry, including for “nursing mothers” - they are able to take care of themselves. And secondly, bread is not very useful for the body of an adult duck - it causes pain in the stomach and adversely affects digestion. And for a little duckling, a bread meal can even lead to death - its digestive system is not yet fully formed, the expert warns.

In winter, ducks really do not refuse feeding. But you should choose for this not bread, but grain, porridge or greens.
