Famous Lithuanian actor told PD about life, career and loneliness
The ending theatrical season was especially eventful for the Lithuanian actor Vladas Bagdonas. The anniversary, which was solemnly celebrated in St. Petersburg, the leading roles in the theaters of the two capitals, the birth of new songs. What does the actor consider the most important for himself? And how is his life in general?
– Vladas, at the end of the season you took the stage of the Baltic House as Sherlock Holmes...
– And every time it’s such a nice experiment… where is Holmes? And then I decided: why not try? Still, this is Conan Doyle, whose books, although I have read dozens of times, will still be interesting. This is composer Raymond Pauls and director Igor Konyaev. These are beautiful scenery and colorful costumes. In the end, I was just interested in trying on the image of Sherlock Holmes. I am always happy to play this role.
– Especially since you have a special relationship with music. You write songs, perform with them at concerts.
– Since childhood, songs have guided me through life. Sometimes it’s even strange for me to call myself a theater actor, since in Lithuania I work in several rock operas and musicals. Since my fiftieth birthday, I have released three discs. I sing in Russian, the texts are by modern Russian poets and classics.
- You have played more than one performance at the Baltic House.
– Yes, I have a long friendship with this theatre. I know all the nooks and crannies here, all the actors. I really like to come here, I love this theater and all the people who work and create here. I performed here not only in the productions of Baltdom itself - Black Thrush by Jonas Vaitkus and Moscow - Petushki by Andriy Zholdak, but also in the performances of Eymuntas Nyakroshyus. His death haunts me to this day. This is a big loss for me and for the theatre. We have been working with Nyakroshus since my first graduation performance. And then I played in all his productions, most often the main roles. We had a warm relationship. And I think I understood him. He wanted to take me to some new project, but ...
– What is the difference between Zholdak and Nyakroshyus as directors?
– Eymuntas Nyakroshus had his own very original theatrical style, which really distinguished him from everyone else. Andriy Zholdak works differently, he has a specific approach to actors. He wears them out quite a bit. Andrei Konchalovsky also has a very peculiar manner. I'm even a little afraid of him. He is so strict, demanding - both to himself and to the actors. He, like Nyakroshus, does not miss a single performance, he watches from beginning to end. This is a classic director who, with his theatrical work, is very different from his cinematic work. He is a great intellectual. And even just listening to what and how he says is already interesting.
- You played the role of the head physician in his film House of Fools.
- Yes, this is a small, but quite significant role. But my most notable role, with which I first appeared on the all-Union screen and stood on stage at the opening of the Moscow Film Festival, is the role in Elem Klimov’s film “Come and See”, which was awarded the Golden Prize. Both the film itself and the entire filming process - everything was so realistic and powerful that it was hard for me to believe that this was a movie.
Balthazar Kormakur, a famous Icelandic director, invited me to his film, I think, only because of this picture. He said so: "I want to invite you and talk about the film "Come and See" because it is the best film ever made about the war." I recently watched it in an updated version made jointly by Belarusfilm and Mosfilm. And I liked it just as much as before.
- Another important role was played by you in Pavel Lungin's film "The Conductor".
- This film is primarily about the fact that you should not forget about your loved ones and think only about what is important to you. Do not forget the father's duty. The father is obliged not only to build a house, plant a tree, give birth to a son. He must help him with his experience until the end of his days, not forget him. Otherwise, close to tragedy. The mistake of my hero is that he was only concerned with himself and his profession. And I know such selfish conductors. This is exactly what I wanted to play. My musician daughter after watching said: “Well, father, you hit the spot!”
A person should not remain on his own. He must communicate with relatives, with his son, with people standing next to him, with the world. And no matter how colossal heights you reach, you cannot consider yourself the center of the world. Although this is probably debatable. Because every person is the center of the world and the universe.
– Today they say that the main problem of a person is loneliness. Is it familiar to you?
- Of course. But... Usually, representatives of my profession like to talk about their affairs, share their thoughts, but I don't. So it might be a little easier for me. Although a person still can not be alone. There must always be someone nearby.
– And who is next to you now?
– My friend Elena is a Belarusian theater critic. Recently, we were in Prague and Barcelona with her, traveling just like that. And that's great. I love traveling, driving a car, watching how people live in different countries.
