Unboxing the Darkling

Fairy Loot, a UK-based monthly YA subscription box, asked me to include my SECOND ARMY poster I designed as a print in their September box. Despite fear of showing my age [and/or hermit-ness], I didn’t realize how popular ‘unboxing’ photos are; I was tagged in over 50 Instagram’s that include my poster from Fairy Loot subscribers – and that’s just 1 social media channel! This community is so friggin’ rad – and not just because they like my poster – they’re such an interested, interest-ing, energized group. Each photo was beautifully art directed, with perfect lighting and eloquently written captions. I’m so proud to be a part of this group of creative people!

LYKOS OR BUST

I got so much re-tweet love from posting the HELLDIVER design, I had to burn a screen print and put it up on Etsy! I used metallic gun-metal grey opaque Speedball ink. The contrast is perfect on the tee shirts and poster bristol, but the tote canvas must not be as porous as the cotton tees because it’s extremely reflective. Still, I like the effect. I’m going to start experimenting with mixing custom colors and doing multi-colors on a 1-color screen. I’m not tempted to dip my toes into the 2-color realm yet, it’s probably just a matter of time though. Like, when you’re in your 20′s and all “I’m NEVER going to stay in on Friday nights” but then you’re 30 watching Dateline and tweeting at Josh Mankiewicz.

Future dystopian trilogy books? Please and thank you.  

But seriously folks, Red Rising—the science fiction novel by Pierce Brown—was a rough read for me. Sure, I love a good slave colony on Mars with people of seemingly Irish decent. But, perpetually blonde hard-bodies with golden bird wings is where I draw the line. Luckily, the plot takes some awesome rebel-society-members-gone-rogue turns and I was inspired to do an illustration. Mainly because the word HELLDIVERS is badass. So is PITVIPERS, CLAWDRILL and HOWLERS. I may not screen print this like usual, I want to test the digital-printing waters first, but stay tuned for the final product!

Ball Drop, Mic Drop

Right before New Years I finished up a new logo for Cleveland Camera Rental, this amazing video production equipment rental (+ crew!) company. They’re based in Cleveland (obviously) and do these hilarious promo videos – check out this one of them testing the slow-mo capabilities on a Sony FS5. Everything is so much cooler in slow-mo. You could be doing the most boring thing – eating white bread alone – and if it was in slow-mo it would look like the most innovating, interesting indie movie trailer ever edited.

Turns out, metallic ink isn’t just for the 70′s! I picked up some ‘blue topaz’ metallic speedball ink and printed a tee shirt of my Finnick design [on Etsy here!]  It’s a really subtle sparkle… so you don’t feel like an adolescent with bad taste.

“But there are much worse games to play”

Finished my ‘Finnick Odair’ print right before Mockingjay Part 2 releases (order HERE!) I had this idea sketched out for like a year before I got off my butt to design it. Actually, I didn’t get off my butt because designers are perpetually on their butts, so I guess I stayed on my butt to finish this. I used Anthem Printing to burn the screen and they are AWESOME – the burn is flawless and they were insanely helpful picking a screen mesh. And you know, customer service MEANS something nowadays! Everyone is so cranky or socially inept, when you work with one normal person you realize how defunct everyone is. Ranting aside, Speedball gold metallic ink is AH-MAZING YAY *:･ﾟ✧ SPARKLES*:･ﾟ✧

You’ve got no fear of the underdog, that’s why you will not survive

216 Studios is a production house in downtown Cleveland with some very talented, cool cats. I had the awesome opportunity to build their new logo, which was really fun – being from Cleveland and all.  Designing for local companies in your hometown feels like you’re building something that matters. Especially for a city like Cleveland that went through such tough times during the recession. Watching the city get revitalized over the past few years with all the new development is… electric. It’s the best feeling to witness an underdog’s comeback. Always fear the underdog… ALWAYS (queue Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’)

Long Live The Heart…

As a first-effort to post more personal work, here’s a glance into the past 6 months of my life: WEDDING STATIONARY-MANIA! The fallout? Doing a full marital compendium is not chill. Especially nowadays where you can customize everything from cookie icing to toilet paper – As a designer you can totally fall into a tailspin of branded horror. But with a balance of drooling over Pinterest and bridled restraint, you can have an awesome experience. Especially when the end result is caricatures of your entire wedding party!
