Traditions of the Greeks - echoes of Homer's culture

Each nation resembles a person with its own character and characteristics, which is most clearly reflected in culture. Some of the most ancient and colorful customs belong to the Greek ethnic group. Some traditions of the Greeks have continued to exist since the time of the famous poet Homer, while others have appeared relatively recently.

I want to note that each region of Greece has its own system of cultural characteristics, and therefore the Greeks of the south are significantly different from their northern compatriots. However, all Greeks have a lot in common. What is the real Greek character? What ancient traditions accompany a wedding in Greece? What holidays do Greeks not imagine their life without?

Traditions of Greek hospitality

Visiting Greece for the first time, you will surely be surprised by the atmosphere of relaxation and unhurriedness that prevails even in large cities. The Greeks are a southern unhurried people who love to enjoy life, spend time in fun and idleness.

These qualities often affect the discipline of employees, but are not blamed. At the same time, since ancient times in Greece there has been the concept of “filotimo”, which has always been ridiculed in society. Lies or betrayal, cunning or self-interest are not welcome in Greek society. The Greeks are no less strict about those who appear in public while intoxicated.

Greeks are a hospitable people

The hospitality of the Greeks is known all over the world. Homer also wrote that a person who did not adequately receive a guest in his house offends Zeus himself. Despite the fact that there have been dramatic changes in the religion of Greece, the traditions of Greek hospitality have remained unchanged.

Moreover, there are a lot of superstitions connected with the reception of a guest. For example, according to the character of the first guest who came to the house, the Greeks judge what the holiday will be like - cheerful, noisy or restrained.

The guest himself must also adhere to some customs established in Greece. For example, it is impossible to cross the threshold of the house with the right foot. Being at the very entrance to the house, you should wish all the best to the family that invited you, and then give a small present (it can be sweets, flowers or wine).

I was amused by the tradition of the Greeks, which is accepted in restaurants or cafes. Since people in Greece are very sociable and sociable, lonely visitors are sometimes not paid attention at all.

Foreigners often assume that they were just unlucky and got caught by a lazy waiter, but this is not true. The restaurant staff simply assumes that one person is waiting for his company, after which they immediately come to serve the audience.

A wedding in Greece is a colorful and bright holiday

Greek wedding traditions

A Greek wedding is a whole kaleidoscope of ancient rituals that make the holiday memorable and bright. Usually, the celebration is preceded by an engagement, and preparations for the wedding begin a week before the appointed day (usually on Sunday).

On this day, the groom sends henna to the bride to decorate her hair. Two days before the holiday, girls and women from two families gather at the bride's to look at her outfit and dowry.

The bridesmaids make the bed, after which they throw rice, flower petals and coins on top of the bedspread - these are symbols of love and wealth. Also, according to tradition, it is customary to put babies on the bed to wish future spouses fertility.

The wedding itself in Greece lasts three days, and each of them has its own purpose. The first day is reserved for friends and relatives who are having fun and celebrating with might and main. On the second day, the wedding takes place, but on the third day, the bride must demonstrate to everyone her skills as a hostess.

Greeks love to dance during the holiday. In addition to the wedding dance, the groom, the bride and all the guests often dance, creating a circle and holding hands. As I said, the Greeks are sociable people, and therefore they can gather up to a thousand or more guests at their weddings.

Winter Festival and Garlic Wreaths

There are many holidays in Greece that are held on a grand scale and, of course, attract a lot of tourists. One of the very first of the year is the Ragutsaria winter carnival in the city of Kastoria. It falls at the beginning of January, and takes its beginning in antiquity, when the Greeks honored Dionysus.

On this day people used to dress up in costumes to ask higher powers for help in fighting evil spirits. Games, competitions for participants and the play of several orchestras, the music of which fills the whole town, add a special flavor to the holiday.

But on the first day of May, the Greeks celebrate the Day of Flowers. The name of this month is associated with the name of Maya, an ancient Greek nymph. In ancient times, the people danced around the sacred trees of Maya in the groves.

Wreaths - the favorite decoration of the Greeks

Today, in honor of the beginning of spring and warm days, the Greeks are making a special decoration - a wreath based on a vine. Flowers and ears of wheat are woven into it, to which heads of garlic can be added - from the evil eye. I must say, it comes out very picturesque and original. In some regions of Greece, wreaths are not made, but on May 1, they certainly decorate the doors of houses with bundles of greenery, flowers, figs, and orange blossoms.

Concluding my story about the traditions of the Greeks, I would like to mention some superstitions that have existed in Greece for many centuries. To avoid the evil eye, the Greeks wear a small blue pendant with an eye painted on it. You can not pass the knife from hand to hand - this will lead to a quarrel. If two people said the same word at the same time, you need to touch the red color. Protecting the house from evil spirits “in Greek” is simple: you need to hang a bunch of garlic or onions in one of the corners.

LA GOMERA - TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Hotel search in La Gomera

Many travelers visit the island as part of a day trip, but in such a short period of time it is simply impossible to get acquainted with the cultural characteristics of the locals and see all the unique sights. The locals of La Gomera are hospitable and friendly people, they are happy to introduce foreign guests to the particulars of their way of life and are keenly interested in the culture of travelers from distant countries. Agriculture remains the main activity for local residents. For many, growing mangoes, bananas, papayas and avocados is their only means of livelihood, and some families have been involved in farming for generations.

One of the main national products is cheese, which is made from goat's milk. It was first produced several centuries ago; over the years, milk processing technology has changed significantly, but many people still prefer to cook cheese at home according to an old recipe. All gourmets strive to try this amazingly tasty and healthy product, and participation in its production can be considered a real success.

Fishing remains the most important industry for the indigenous people; coastal waters are rich in a wide variety of fish and shellfish species. For tourists, trips to "fish places" are also carried out, and vacationers can enjoy the prey of local fishermen in any restaurant of national cuisine. Speaking about local culinary traditions, it is worth noting another unique product - guarapo palm syrup, the production of which is also an important national craft. The island gained world fame not at all because of the rich handicraft traditions, but because of its inherent natural features. Travelers who go for a walk through the beautiful cedar forests will be able to see a unique natural phenomenon - "horizontal rain". In fact, it is a dense fog, the formation of which is due to the unique natural features of the forest. The beautiful island is preparing a lot of surprises for its guests. A holiday in La Gomera will give you a lot of unforgettable impressions.

One of these surprises is that colorful festivals are held here, which are of interest to any traveler. So, one of the most significant holidays on the island is Bajada de la Virgen de Guadalupe, which is held every 5 years in October. Hundreds of tourists come to La Gomera to see the spectacular sea regatta, where ships escort the huge statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The procession starts on the neighboring island of La Palma, Puntallana becomes the primary point, and the end point is the capital of the island, San Sebastian. For the rest of the 4 years, next to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (in the same place, in the capital), a colorful procession with the statue of the Virgin passes.

In the middle or end of February, La Gomera, like the other Canary Islands, hosts a carnival. Costumed parades to the rhythms of samba and salsa, beauty contests, which result in the selection of the Carnival Queen - a colorful program will not let any of the visitors get bored. The festival ends with the tradition of “burial of the sardine”, when the procession on the central streets carries a huge figurine of a fish made of papier-mâché, and the participants in the processions scatter confetti along the way. Despite the name, the custom is very cheerful and certainly no one can be sad when burning a sardine. The holiday is celebrated everywhere, but the widest program awaits tourists in the capital of the island.

Most of the celebrations in La Gomera are religious in nature. So, Holy Week (Semana Santa), Christmas celebrated on December 25 (Navidad), and the Assumption of the Virgin on August 15 (Fiesta de la Candelaria) enjoy special honor. On January 6, as in all of Spain, the feast of Los Reyes Magos is celebrated with a colorful procession led by Balthazar, Melchor and Gaspar. The three magician kings delight visitors by throwing candy into the crowd - which is most liked by the smallest citizens. In addition to these holidays, the island has many celebrations dedicated to various saints - Fiesta del Carmen (July 16), celebrated in coastal cities, Fiesta de la Virgen de las Nieves (August 6), as well as Fiesta Nuestra Senora del Buen Paso ( 11 September).

The most upscale resort hotel on the island is the Hotel Jardín Tecina, which is located in a fabulously beautiful tropical garden of 70,000 square meters. meters. The hotel is well-developed … Open

Among other holidays celebrated on La Gomera, it is worth highlighting May 1 (Dia del Trabajo), during which parades are held. Traditionally, no one works on this day, local residents prefer to spend it with their families, inviting friends for dinner. On May 30, Dia de las Islas Canarias is celebrated, during this holiday you can see bright processions, an exhibition of works of art, a fair, and performances of musicians, actors and dancers can be seen on the central streets of the island's major cities.
