No firefighters or civilians were injured in the brush fires on Thursday.

Fires on Annico Drive and Mackinac Drive were reported Thursday in Homer Glen. (Shutterstock)HOMER GLEN, IL — Large brush fires in Homer Glen on Thursday caused a large response from firefighters and multiple area fire departments, according to the Homer Township Fire Protection District.
The fire district responded to simultaneous brush fires at 5:28 p.m. on Thursday. The fires quickly grew and threatened nearby buildings, the fire district said.
The first fire happened in the 15700 block of Annico Drive, and the initial response was one fire engine for a brush fire behind the row of businesses, according to the district. The response was quickly upgraded due to the size, intensity and rapid growth of the fire.

The fire district said all on-duty Homer Fire crews were called to Annico Drive, and within minutes of arrival, the fire had doubled in size and was closing in on nearby buildings.
Additional assistance was requested from Northwest Homer, Lockport, Orland, Lemont and Mokena fire departments.

One Homer fire engine was forced to quickly retreat due to a sudden change in conditions that threatened to damage the engine, Fire Chief Kevin Doyle said.
Several electrical poles also burned and firefighters were at risk of an energized power line dropped into their working areas, Doyle said. In addition to the poles, the marsh-like soil conditions also caused firefighters to sink into knee-deep mud as they advanced hose lines to protect the nearby businesses.
"To further complicate the hazardous situation, employees that had evacuated one of the Annico Drive buildings reported a natural gas leak in their building," Doyle said in an email to Patch.
Some firefighters working on the fire were reassigned to investigate the gas leak.
The fire was brought under control at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the fire district said. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
At the same time as the Annico Drive fire, crews also responded to a large brush fire in the 12100 block of Mackinac Drive, according to the District. Since Homer Fire crews were at the Annico Drive fire, crews from the Orland Fire District, also fighting a large brush fire in the same area, responded to assist the Homer Fire District on Mackinac.
Crews from Frankfort, Palos, New Lenox, Manhattan, and North Palos fire departments assisted on the Mackinac Drive fire, the district said. That fire was brought under control at 6:50 p.m.
The cause of both fires is still under investigation.

Boris Akimov: How I became a little Homer Simpson
Blogs
Boris Akimov
The first Dunkin' Donuts opened in Moscow. We, as big fans of everything related to The Simpsons, immediately went there
My daughter Varya, at the age of three, when she saw the cover of Esquire with Homer Simpson, screamed: “Another dad! Another dad! In general, it is clear that the Simpsons - it was a glorious time - I watched a lot. I have two of my favorites there. One is a monkey that periodically beats the drum in Homer's head. And the second is everything related to food and drink. Burps, Homer on Fire, burgers, beer and, of course, donuts - all non-organic and non-ecological, but very sweet to me. In general, the praise of stupidity in all its manifestations is sweet to me. And the donut, as one of the manifestations of such praise, is also nice to me. In general, we could not pass by the opening of Dunkin' Donuts, the world's main donut shop. And Polina Kozlovskaya, a participant in the Snob project and just a friend of our blog, went there.
Donuts are an unusually bright and colorful business. The mere contemplation of the rows of yellow, pink, blue, green, speckled, striped and even flowered donuts in a cafe on Novy Arbat immediately lifts your spirits. I counted three types of donuts: proper donuts - round with a hole, donuts with filling without a hole, and small round donuts made from the dough from the holes of ordinary donuts (here they are called munchkins). When choosing, keep in mind that four and a half munchkins are equal in weight to one standard donut. To not overdo it.
Donuts have a variety of fillings: from lemon cream to strawberry jam. The ingredients are brought from France, Belgium and Holland. However, Konstantin Petrov, owner of the Russian company Donuts Project, which is opening Dunkin’ Donuts in Moscow, cryptically remarked that the tastes were adapted to the Russian consumer. From the adapted one, I noticed apple jam, and then, maybe, from a lack of donut experience. For my taste, Moscow donuts are no different, for example, from London ones.
Taking a break from donuts, I decided to talk about the legend of the American police. There is such a myth: allegedly in the states, police officers are fed for free. The Russian franchise owner Konstantin Petrov, without batting an eyelid, immediately confirmed the existence of such a tradition to me and even told me about his plans to support the Russian policemen.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos.Konstantin Petrov himself took up donuts professionally about a year ago. He is better known as the owner of the Ukrainian industrial holding JV Promexport and the president of FC Stal. He assures that he loves donuts since childhood. “My favorite is classic glazed. I love him. Just ate two today. I am delighted,” he said, not without pride. Konstantin tried to eat donuts every day, but soon came to the conclusion that everything needs a measure. By the way, the company's materials state that in 2007 they launched a donut with zero fat content on the market.
Tony Pavese, head of international business at Dunkin' Donuts, came to open the Russian restaurant. I asked him about free donuts for the cops too.
