Rectangle definition

Features and properties

.

Rectangle is a quadrilateral in which all angles are right, that is, 90 degrees, and the opposite sides of the rectangle are equal to each other. The rectangle itself is usually written by listing its vertices (denoted in Latin letters - ABCD). The long side of the rectangle is called the length (denoted by the Latin letter - a), and the short side is called the width (denoted by the Latin letter - b). The sides of the rectangle are also its heights (see Fig. 1).

AB=CD
BC = AD

Legend

  • a — length
  • b - width
  • P - perimeter
  • S - area

Perimeter and area of a rectangle
P = a + b + a + b; P = a 2 + b 2; P = 2a + 2b is the perimeter of the rectangle
S = a b - area of rectangle

Rectangle is a parallelogram with all right angles (see Fig. 2).

Rectangle property . The diagonals of the rectangle are equal (see Fig. 3).

Rectangle attribute . If the diagonals of a parallelogram are equal, then the parallelogram is a rectangle.

Example of finding the perimeter of a rectangle

To find the perimeter of a rectangle , you need to add its two adjacent sides and multiply the sum by two.

AB = CD = 2
BC = AD = 4
P = AB + BC + CD AD
P = 2 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 12
P = (2 + 4) 2 = 12
