Kindergarten power words

Rapp, J. / IRLA/Power Words/Reading Logs

IRLA

The GLP teachers use the reading framework IRLA (Independent Reading Level Assessment) developed by the American Reading Company to assess children's current reading levels and determine instructional paths. The data provided by IRLA assessments tells the teacher where a student is currently reading, what skills they are secure in at that reading level, and provides a sequence of skills/behaviors the student needs to learn in order to continue to grow as a reader.  Families can assist their child in making strides in their independent reading abilities by reviewing power words, logging nightly at home IRLA reading steps and encouraging and praising your child's efforts in reading.

POWER WORDS

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED TO KNOW THEM?

“Power Words” (also known as Dolch words, Fry words, popcorn words, and high frequency words) are a set of frequently occurring words that children are encouraged to recognize by sight, rather than decode using other word identification strategies. These words make up 50-75% of the words included in children’s books. When a child truly knows a sight word, he or she can recall it within three seconds and will not need to sound it out.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT CHILDREN MEMORIZE SIGHT WORDS?

Learning to recognize sight words quickly and accurately leads to greater oral reading fluency and allows the reader to focus on more challenging words encountered while reading. Improving fluency has a positive impact on reading comprehension as well as boosting self- confidence and increasing motivation to read independently.

WHICH WORDS SHOULD MY CHILD BE PRACTICING?

At the kindergarten level, it is the goal for students to be secure in recognizing all 60 words from the 1G List of Power Words, all 50 words from the 2G List of Power Words and all words from the white section of the 2G Category Word List by the end of the kindergarten school year.   The Power Word lists can be accessed by clicking the links below.

IRLA READING LOGS

WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO I FILL THEM OUT?

IRLA Reading Logs are used to keep track of the amount of time your child spends reading each day.  Our goal is that every child log a 30 minutes of reading at school and 30 minutes of reading at home each day.  The reading can be broken into smaller blocks of time (15 minutes is ideal).  Here is what reading may look like at home:

1. Your child can read the pictures.

2. Your child can read the words.

3. Your child can make up a story to go along with the pictures.

4. You read a story to your child.

Each time your child completes 15 minutes of reading, it equals  1 step on the IRLA reading log.   (It is important to remember that steps are not logged by the number of books read but rather by the number of minutes spent reading).

1 step = 15 minutes of reading

On the reading log, for every one step completed at home, one house is circled, dated, and initialed by the parent.  The goal is to circle two houses each night (30 minutes of at home reading)Reading logs should be sent back and forth to school. We will also log reading steps at school.  Each time your child completes 100 reading steps, they earn a reading medal!! The names of medal winners are read over the morning announcements.  It is very exciting to hear the names of friends and relatives as they are announced for their success in reading!

What are Sight Words?

Sight Words—we call them “Power Words”—are high-frequency, low-meaning words, most of which cannot be sounded out and thus must be memorized by sight (e. g., the, of, these, are, here, and is). Our 1 Green (1G) collections use only the first 60 Sight Words that make up more than one-third of the words used in English text. Our 2 Green (2G) collections use only the first 120 Sight Words that make up more than 50 percent of the words used in English text. Once mastered, these words provide “islands of certainty” from which the emergent reader can navigate the unknown with confidence.

What is 1 Green?

    At this level your child will know 25-75 Sight Words. Your child will be able to recognize these words anywhere and read them automatically, at flash speed, without sounding out or working at them.

  • Children typically need to see and say a new word 40 times before they know it, so this level will take some patience and repeated practice.

  • If your child gets stuck on a word, ask him, “What word would make sense there?” If he is still stuck, just tell him the word and keep going.

What is 2 Green?

At this level your child will know 75-125 Sight Words and will use them as a reliable and familiar support framework when reading. They will be able to read these words in books they have never seen before and out of context, such as on lists and flash cards, at flash speed.

  • When your child comes to a “tricky word,” encourage her to look at the picture and say the first letter sound.

  • If your child gets stuck on a word that she got right when it appeared on an earlier page in the book, ask her to go back and reread that earlier page and then try it again. Word repetition is common in 2 Green books for this purpose.

Sight Word Activities

Since learning Sight Words is really about memorization, it will take time, patience, and repeated practice. If your child is having trouble learning the Sight Words just from reading and re-reading the books, try some of these fun activities:

  • Flash Cards. Use our laminated Power Word cards on a ring, or make your own flash cards and keep them in a ziplock bag.

  • Speed Games. Adrenaline actually helps to encode words into memory, so play hard and play fast. If your child isn’t up on his feet, trying to say the words as fast as he can—adrenaline isn’t kicking in yet. Make it a race to see how fast he can say all the words, using the flash cards or the 1 Green Skills Card.

  • Concentration. Make 2 cards for each word and lay all the words out facedown in a grid. Take turns turning over 2 cards. If the words match, and your child can read the word, he gets the match.

  • Go Fish. Make 2 cards for each word and play the traditional card game Go Fish, taking turns asking for and then drawing cards until a player gets a Power Word match. We recommend playing with just 10 words at a time.

  • Sandwiching. Because Power Words are low-meaning, they aren’t that interesting to learn, so it can help to “sandwich” them with words that your child loves and cares about. Make up some flash cards for high-meaning, special words (e.g., the dog’s name, sibling’s name, best friend, cartoon character, etc.), and “sandwich” in the Power Words to form short sentences.

  • Kinesthetic Encoding. It’s time to get active. Write the words on a large piece of paper, some poster board, an easel, or a blackboard. Ask your child to stand up and pretend to trace the letters in the air using his arm in big, sweeping motions as he slowly says the word (not the letters). Turn on some good tunes and have fun with the big motions.

  • Auditory/Visual/Tactile Encoding. Get out the crayons and markers and practice writing the words. As your child writes the word, have him also say the word slowly (stretched out). You want him to say the whole word, not the letters, to help encode the entire word into long-term memory.

09/27/2016 Day of the preschool worker.

Heartfelt thanks to all parents for congratulations on the Day of the Preschool Worker! It's nice to know that kindergarten is starting to develop its own traditions, and relationships are getting warmer!

GTO - the way to success!

Physical education is an important component of the overall development of a child in kindergarten. Every parent wants to see their child healthy, active and cheerful. For a child to always be like this, the foundations must be laid from early childhood. Therefore, at preschool age, much attention is paid to the development of children's muscles, their dexterity, strength and endurance. To ensure the health of the child, compulsory physical education is introduced in kindergarten.

Based on the Sanitary Norms and Rules, the physical education of children in preschool educational institutions is aimed at improving health and physical development, expanding the functionality of the child's body, and developing motor skills and motor qualities. It is necessary to use forms of motor activity: morning exercises, indoor and outdoor physical education, physical training minutes, outdoor games, sports exercises, rhythmic gymnastics and others.

Targets of preschool education for physical development according to the Federal State Educational Standard:

- at an early age: "the child has developed large motor skills, he seeks to master various types of movement (running, climbing, stepping over, etc.";

- at the stage of completion of preschool education: "the child has developed large and fine motor skills; he is mobile, enduring, masters the basic movements, can control his movements and manage them. "

  • Complex "Ready for Labor and Defense" (TRP)

Regulations on the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex "Ready for Labor and Defense" (TRP) determines that the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex provides for the preparation for and direct implementation by various age groups (from 6 to 70 years and older) of the population of the Russian Federation of the established standards of the All-Russian physical culture and sports complex according to 3 levels of difficulty.

At preschool age (for children 6-8 years old - the first stage of the introduction of the TRP) the foundation is laid for the physical development, health and character of a person in the future. In connection with the continuity between kindergarten and school, with the introduction of the delivery of TRP standards into the school curriculum, it is preschool education that orients children towards passing the TRP complex at preschool age.

For the implementation of the RLD complex in the kindergarten, the following conditions are provided for:

• regulatory and resource support;

• program-methodical, technological and organizational support of the RLD implementation system;

• information support and information and explanatory work;

• monitoring procedures to ensure the implementation of the TRP;

• organization and holding of sports events.

When implementing the TRP complex, we are guided by the following legal documents:

  • Federal Law of the Russian Federation of December 29, 2012 N 273-FZ "On Education in the Russian Federation";
  • SanPiN 2. 4.1.3049-13 - "Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the device, content and organization of the mode of operation of the preschool educational institution";
