About

Try to ask yourself a mental question: how do I imagine Homer? If your imagination has reproduced the image of a wise blind man, an aged singer-storyteller, we are ready to tell you why everything is not so simple. The author of the key texts of antiquity, the Iliad and the Odyssey, is not perceived by all experts in the same way. Perhaps there was no Homer at all? Together with associate professors of the HSE School of Linguistics Boris Valeryevich Orekhov and Vladimir Vladimirovich Fayer, students will be able to immerse themselves in the field of Homeric studies online and learn about the main problems and theories in this area.

The Homeric question began to interest classical philologists as early as the end of the 18th century, when F.-A. Wolf. At the same time, on the material of the Iliad and the Odyssey, they actively began to study the culture of the past, which led to the development of new methods of history, cultural studies, comparative studies, philology and textual criticism. On the example of the Homeric case, students will get acquainted with various philological methodologies, problems of translation studies, as well as the peculiarities of Homer's reception. We will turn not only to texts, but also to cinema.

The authors of the online course set themselves the task of acquainting listeners with the current state of Homeric studies, as well as tracing the history of the development of the Homeric question based on the cultural and literary context. After completing the training, course participants will receive basic knowledge of Homeric works, learn about new approaches to the analysis of classical texts, and will also be able to more thoughtfully analyze and comment on poetic texts.

Before taking the online course, we highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Format

The course consists of short video lectures lasting from 8 to 15 minutes with invaluable questions and practical tasks. Once a week, students will be offered a 15-question, graded test or essay in a peer-review format. The final exam is a test.
