The Hidden History of Nursery Rhymes
Many of the nursery rhymes that we have read to our children have their origins in British history. Rhymes were written for many different reasons. Some rhymes were written to honor a particular local event that has since been forgotten, while others were written to express feelings of love. Rhymes were also used to hide real meanings, such as when someone wanted to express displeasure toward the government or the sovereign without being executed! Another reason for rhymes is that they’re easy to remember, and therefore could be spread by word-of-mouth—an essential feature for a large population of people who could not read or write. Here are some common nursery rhymes that have interesting interpretations regarding figures and events in British history. But be warned, they are not for the faint-hearted!

Old Mother Hubbard - The Old Mother Hubbard rhyme allegedly refers to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and his unsuccessful attempt to get an annulment for King Henry VIII. Old Mother Hubbard is Cardinal Wolsey. The cupboard is the Catholic Church. The doggie is Henry VIII. The bone is the annulment Henry wanted in order to end his marriage to Katherine of Aragon.
Mary, Mary Quite Contrary “Mary” is referring to Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII. The Catholic queen received quite a bad reputation during her short reign for executing Protestant loyalists. The garden in the rhyme is referring to the growth of a graveyard. Silver bells and cockleshells are believed to be euphemisms for instruments of torture. The “maids” is slang for a beheading instrument called “The Maiden” that came into common use before the guillotine.
Three Blind Mice - The first written variation of Three Blind Mice dates from 1609. The three blind mice were three Protestant loyalists who were accused of plotting against Queen Mary I. The farmer’s wife refers to the queen who with her husband, King Philip of Spain, owned large estates. The three men were burned at the stake.
Ring Around A Rosy - Ring Around A Rosy is said to refer to the Great Plague of 1665. The plague caused a high fever and a rash in the form of a ring hence the name, Ring Around A Rosy. Putting herbs and spices in the pocket of an ailing person in an attempt to freshen up the stale air was a common practice, thus the “pocket full of posies”. “Ashes, Ashes” is an American variation of the English version which is “A-tishoo, A-tishoo” or someone sneezing. Plague sufferers had a fit of sneezing before they passed away or when “we all fall down”.
Little Jack Horner - The story behind this rhyme is that “Jack” is actually Thomas Horner, a steward to the abbot of Glastonbury. The abbot sent Horner to London with a Christmas pie for King Henry VIII. The deeds to twelve manor houses were hidden in the pie. The abbot did this in an attempt to ingratiate himself with the king during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. On his trip to London, Horner put his finger in the pie and pulled out the deed to Mells Manor. Shortly thereafter, Horner moved into the manor. His descendants have lived in the manor house for generations. Horner’s descendants dispute this story and claim that Horner fairly purchased the property from the king.
London Bridge - London Bridge hasa rich history and can be traced back to 1659. In fact, London Bridge is so well known that many countries have their own version Bro, Bro, Brille in Denmark, Die Magdeburger Brucke in Germany, Le Pont-Levis in France, and Le porte in Italy.
While the alleged meanings of some of these rhymes may or may not be true, it sure is a fun way to remember events in British history. It may also be used as a jumping off point to study other nursery rhymes that may contain old words that give away their British origins. For more information on the origins of nursery rhymes, you can check out these reference books, The Annotated Mother Goose and The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes.

Reason Behind the Rhyme: 'Little Jack Horner'
Host Debbie Elliott and Chris Roberts dissect the meaning of the nursery rhyme "Little Jack Horner." It's about a real estate swindle in 16th-century England. Roberts is the author of Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme.
DEBBIE ELLIOTT, host:
This is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News. I'm Debbie Elliott.
You think the real estate market is treacherous today, try England in the late 1530s. That's what the nursery rhyme "Little Jack Horner" is really all about.
(Soundbite of music)
ELLIOTT: Here to explain is our London librarian Chris Roberts. He's the author of "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme," and he's at our London bureau.
Hello again, Chris.
Mr. CHRIS ROBERTS (Author, "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown"): Hello. Hi, Debbie.
ELLIOTT: So who was Little Jack Horner?
Mr. ROBERTS: Little Jack Horner was actually Thomas Horner. The name Jack comes up in nursery rhymes a lot, usually to reflect a slightly knavish character, a bit of a ne'er-do-well. So I suspect that's why they changed his name to Jack from Thomas.
(Reading) `Little Jack Horner sat in a corner eating his Christmas pie. He stuck in a thumb and pulled out a plum and said, "What a good boy am I. "'
Where to begin with this? This is talking about the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII taking property from the Catholic Church. Jack, as we know, is actually called Thomas Horner. Now he was a steward to the Abbot of Glastonbury during the reign of Henry VIII. This is how the story goes: He was entrusted to take some title deeds of properties to Henry VIII as a bribe so the abbot could keep the main monastery, but was prepared to give away some of the lesser properties.
Now the title deeds were held and sealed in a pie, and Jack's off to London. But instead of delivering the bribe to Henry VIII, he helps himself to the pie, puts his hand in, pulls out a plum piece of real estate--in this case, a place called Mells Manor--and thinks he's very clever for doing this. That's one version of it, that Jack is a thief and he's stealing the bribe that's intended for the king. And he...
ELLIOTT: So was this common? Is there historical evidence to support the theory that bribes were often delivered in pies?
Mr. ROBERTS: It comes up bewilderingly often in nursery rhyme. And it's--I think the pie is used as a metaphor. I think it's not necessarily what we would think of as a pie. It's just referring to a means of concealing a document, concealing anything. It could be jewels in some cases. Now the Horner family, who incidentally lived in Mells Manor until the 20th century, are quite outraged at this slander of their ancestor and understandably so.
And there are actually two rhymes that mention Mr. Horner. The first one that mentions him is: `Hopton(ph), Horner, Smith and Finn, when the abbots went out, they came in.' And a much more likely reading of what happened is that Thomas Horner, along with the other people mentioned in the previous rhyme--Hopton and Smith and Finn--were up-and-coming gentry. They were Protestant, they were local merchants doing quite well for themselves in the area around Glastonbury, and that they bought the property. You could see it as an early example of gentrification. They bought the property at the time admittedly at a knockdown rate, and admittedly the land had been stolen from the Catholic Church by Henry VIII. This seems to be what happened after the dissolution of the monasteries. The king didn't keep all the land for himself; he distributed it amongst his supporters so he then could rely on their loyalty should anything occur in the future, should there be a rebellion in the future. I suspect, though I can't prove this, that the popular `Little Jack Horner sat in a corner, eating his Christmas pie' version is actually the Catholic take on proceedings there.
ELLIOTT: Chris Roberts is the author of "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme," and he's a librarian at Lambeth College in South London.
Thank you, Chris.
Mr. ROBERTS: Thank you, Debbie.

Who is Jack Horner, the villain from Puss in Boots 2 | Lyokha about movies and series
I hope you all watched the new cartoon from Dreamworks. "Puss in Boots 2" came out just awesome, and we are already promised Shrek 5 . The star of this cartoon can be considered the main villain ... no, not a wolf personifying death.
The image was found on the InternetThe real star was Jack Horner . This is a villain with a rather comical appearance, where, despite his plump face, he has a tall toned body and strong arms. Plus, his character is evil in the flesh, no moral dilemmas.
However, the Russian audience asks the question: "Who is he?" Let's figure it out and find out who Jack Horner is, and find the original.
Little Jack Horner
As usual, most fairy tales are folk creations; does not have authorship and is passed from mouth to mouth. First documented rhyme about Jack Horner was in Mother Goose Melodies , 1791 edition.
Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating his Christmas pie;
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, "What a good boy am I!"
It was about little Jack Horner sitting in the corner, poking his thumb at a pie and eating a plum, saying: "What a good boy I am" .
The image was found on the InternetIt is not known for certain what the original rhyme could have looked like. However, in 1725 Henry Carey wrote a short poem ridiculing his colleague Ambrosius Phillips , who, in Carey's opinion, wrote too childishly.
Now he sings of Jackey Horner
Sitting in the Chimney-Corner
Eating of a Christmas pye,
Putting in his thumb, Oh fie!
Putting in, Oh fie! his Thumb,
Pulling out, Oh strange! a Plum.
This shows us that Jack Horner's rhyme was known as early as the beginning of the 18th century.
In 1820, The Renowned History of Little Jack Horner was published, which slightly changed the premise of the Little Jack Horner story. In it, he gives a piece of cake to an old woman, and the moral is already described here.
Now let every good boy,
With a sweetmeat or toy,
Not slyly sneak into a corner,
But to playmates repair
And give them a share.
In 1870 James William Elliot publishes the collection National Nursery Rhymes and Songs , which contains the most common version, which has already received its melody.
Jack Horner is mostly a household name. Most often, his name was associated with acts of opportunism and statesmen. In the eyes of the public, most statesmen are greedy and at the same time narrow-minded people.
Image found on the InternetHorner was used in many political cartoons of Abraham Lincoln and Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. American and Australian politicians also came under distribution.
The boy grew up
In addition to cartoonish fiction, Jack Horner also appears as an adult version of himself.
In Ever After High , an animated series about high school girls and fairy tale characters, Jack Horner, a fit young man who still loves plum pies, meets.
Image found on the InternetIn his profession, he also focused on food and became a restaurant critic.
"Puss in Boots 2" , in turn, follows the tradition. Here Jack Horner is a villain who wants to get all the magic in the world. This is despite the fact that he is rich and has a decent arsenal of magical devices.
The Internet really liked this villain, because he has no moral principles. He does evil and does not even reflect on this topic. And in general, he prefers to finish with his problems immediately.
An additional meme was the origin story of the villain, which is described in a short flashback: still small and fat Jack is dancing, trying to sell plum pies and attract public attention. This was reminiscent of the Glow up meme, where the character seems to be weak and weak as a child, but, having matured, becomes pumped up and brutal.
Image found on the InternetJack Horner in the modern sense has become a meme due to its post-ironic rethinking. This is very pleasing, as it helps to correctly present ideas that have long been known to everyone in a modern way.

This material is dedicated to the heroes of our time. Real, not fictional citizens of our country. Those people who do not shoot incidents on their smartphones, but are the first to rush to help the victims. Not by vocation or duty of the profession, but from a personal sense of patriotism, responsibility, conscience and understanding that this is right.
In the great past of Russia - Rus', the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, there were many heroes who glorified the state throughout the world, and did not disgrace the name and honor of its citizen. And we honor their great contribution. Every day, "brick by brick", building a new, strong country, returning to ourselves the lost patriotism, pride and not so long ago forgotten heroes.
We all should remember that in the modern history of our country, in the XXI century - many worthy deeds and heroic deeds have already been accomplished! Actions that deserve your attention.
Read the stories of the exploits of "ordinary" residents of our Motherland, take an example and be proud!
Russia - returning.
In May 2012, a twelve-year-old boy, Danil Sadykov, was awarded the Order of Courage in Tatarstan for saving a nine-year-old child. Unfortunately, his father, also a hero of Russia, received the Order of Courage for him.
At the beginning of May 2012, a small child got into a fountain, the water in which suddenly turned out to be under high voltage. There were a lot of people around, everyone was shouting, calling for help, but they did nothing. Only one Daniel decided. It is obvious that his father, who received the title of hero after a worthy service in the Chechen Republic, raised his son correctly. Courage is in the Sadykovs' blood. As investigators later found out, the water was energized at 380 volts. Danil Sadykov managed to pull the victim onto the side of the fountain, but by that time he himself had received a severe electric shock. For his heroism and selflessness in saving a person in extreme conditions, 12-year-old Danil, a resident of Naberezhnye Chelny, was awarded the Order of Courage, unfortunately posthumously.
Communications battalion commander Sergei Solnechnikov died on March 28, 2012 during an exercise near Belogorsk in the Amur Region.
During the exercise of throwing grenades, an emergency situation occurred - a grenade, after being thrown by a conscripted soldier, hit the parapet. Solnechnikov jumped up to the private, pushed him aside and covered the grenade with his body, saving not only him, but also many people around. Awarded the title of Hero of Russia.
In the winter of 2012, in the village of Komsomolsky, Pavlovsky District, Altai Territory, children played outside near the store. One of them is 9-year-old boy - fell into a sewer well with ice water, which was not visible due to large snowdrifts. If it were not for the help of 17-year-old Alexander Grebe, who accidentally saw what happened and did not jump into the icy water after the victim, the boy could become another victim of adult negligence.
On a Sunday in March 2013, two-year-old Vasya was walking near his house under the supervision of his ten-year-old sister. At this time, foreman Denis Stepanov stopped by his friend on business and, waiting for him behind the fence, watched the child's pranks with a smile. Hearing the sound of snow sliding off the slate, the fireman instantly rushed to the baby and, jerking him aside, took the blow of the snowball and ice.
Twenty-two-year-old Alexander Skvortsov from Bryansk two years ago unexpectedly became a hero of his city: he pulled seven children and their mother out of a burning house.
In 2013, Alexander was visiting the eldest daughter of a neighboring family, 15-year-old Katya. The head of the family went to work early in the morning, everyone was sleeping at home, and he locked the door with a key. In the next room, a mother of many children was busy with the kids, the youngest of which is only three years old, when Sasha smelled smoke.
First of all, everyone logically rushed to the door, but it turned out to be locked, and the second key was in the parents' bedroom, which had already been cut off by the fire.
“I was confused, first of all I started counting the children,” says Natalya, mother. “I couldn’t call the fire brigade or anything, even though I had the phone in my hands.
However, the guy did not lose his head: he tried to open the window, but it was tightly sealed for the winter. With a few blows from the stool, Sasha knocked out the frame, helped Katya to get out and handed over to her the rest of the children, whatever they were wearing. Mom planted the last.
“When he started climbing out on his own, the gas suddenly exploded,” says Sasha. - Singed hair, face. But he is alive, the children are safe, and this is the main thing. I don't need thanks."
Evgeniy Tabakov is the youngest citizen of Russia who has become a holder of the Order of Courage in our country.
Zhenya Tabakov was only seven years old when the bell rang in the Tabakovs' apartment. Only Zhenya and his twelve-year-old sister Yana were at home.
The girl opened the door, not at all alert - the caller introduced himself as a postman, and since in a closed city (the military town of Norilsk - 9) extremely rarely someone else appeared, Yana let the man in.
The stranger grabbed her, put a knife to her throat and began to demand money. The girl struggled and cried, the robber ordered her younger brother to look for money, and at that time he began to undress Yana. But the boy could not leave his sister so easily. He went to the kitchen, took a knife and ran it into the criminal's lower back. From pain, the rapist fell and released Yana. But it was impossible to cope with a recidivist with children's hands. The offender got up, attacked Zhenya and stabbed him several times. Later, experts counted eight stab wounds incompatible with life on the boy's body. At this time, the sister knocked on the neighbors, asked to call the police. Hearing the noise, the rapist tried to hide.
However, the bleeding wound of the little defender left a mark and the loss of blood took its toll. The recidivist was immediately captured, and the sister, thanks to the feat of the heroic boy, remained safe and sound. The feat of a seven-year-old boy is an act of a person with a formed life position. The act of a real Russian soldier who will do everything to protect his family and his home.
GENERALIZATION
It is not uncommon to hear how conditional liberals blinded by the West or voluntarily blindfolded, dogmatic Advisers declare that all the best is in the West and this does not exist in Russia, and all the heroes lived in the past, therefore our Russia is for them not homeland…
Let's leave the ignorant in their ignorance, and pay attention to modern heroes. Small and adults, ordinary passers-by and professionals. Let's pay attention - and we will take an example from them, we will stop remaining indifferent to our own country and our citizens.
The hero performs an action. Such an act, which not everyone dares, perhaps even a few. Sometimes such valiant people are awarded medals, orders, and if they do without any signs, then human memory and inescapable gratitude.
Your attention and knowledge of your heroes, understanding that you must be no worse - and there is the best tribute to the memory of such people and their valiant and worthy deeds.
In early October in Sarapul, a sophomore of the local technical school of mechanical engineering, 18-year-old Vladislav Mineev, saved three people from a fire. A young man was washing a moped in the yard of his house and saw smoke coming out of the neighbors' veranda. Calling firefighters, Vladislav went inside the veranda and heard the children's crying and the cries of his mother. Then the young man knocked out the door, picked up a 6-year-old boy (mother ...
10-year-old Igor Tsarapkin from the Murmansk region saved his 15-year-old brother on the Volga in Ulyanovsk. On June 25, three children from the Murmansk region, who were staying in Ulyanovsk, came with adults to swim on a wild beach. Igor, German and their 14-year-old friend Vlad Larin have been together since early childhood - as they say, without each other, nowhere. Not anticipating trouble,…
April 27 at four in the morning Albert Krasnykh was returning from a business trip to Moscow. The road to Gryazi's hometown lay through Lipetsk. At the exit, Albert saw a burning house. “A taxi driver stopped with me. He ran to the neighbors. And I decided to check the house. At first I thought the house was empty. Probably, so did those who passed by. Broke glass. Apparently…
30-year-old Anton Vokhmintsev, a resident of Yoshkar-Ola, drove the priest to the church in Semenovka and on the way saved 4-year-old Danil from a burning house. The fire in the house of the village of Znamensky, where a husband and wife and two sons, 17 and 4 years old, lived, happened because of a cigarette that drunken parents did not put out. - I went to pick up my mother from work in the colony. A major fire that broke out on July 29 in the village of Putyatino, Nerekhta District, left two families without a roof over their heads. Luckily, the residents survived. However, everything could end in a terrible tragedy. The fire broke out at about eight in the evening in one of the apartments of a wooden one-story house, where at that time there was a woman with two small children. Noticing the fire, the mother jumped out on ...
In the village of Amgu, Terney District (Primorsky Territory), 12-year-old sixth-grader Nikita Nagurov saved an 8-year-old child from a bear that attacked him. “In Amga today, two teenagers 12 years old and 8 years old went to the store. They approached the store, and one saw that a bear jumped out of the gate and rushed at the smaller one - Stanislav Nagorny, who is 8 years old, became him . .. "Help! Help!" I jumped up and saw a girl splashing about in the water. At first, we have shallow water there, and then a hole under water. She probably splashed in shallow water, and was carried away by the current to the depth. I looked around: there were a lot of people on the beach, but ...
“It was summer. I sat on the shore of Lake Kandrykul and sunbathed. It was a wonderful day, the sun warmed very well, I even got a little tired in the heat. Suddenly I saw that 400 meters from the shore a man either disappears under water or appears. He screamed and raised one hand. I didn't think for a second. It was in my head: ...
Imagine that you are trying to save a blind man from a burning building, making your way step by step through burning flames and smoke. Now imagine that you are also blind. Jim Sherman, blind from birth, heard his 85-year-old neighbor's cries for help when she was trapped in her burning house. He found his way along the fence. Once he got to the woman's house, he somehow managed to sneak in and find his neighbor, Annie Smith, also blind. Sherman pulled Smith out of the fire and took him to safety.
Skydiving instructors sacrificed everything to save their students
Few people survive a fall of a few hundred meters. But two women made it through the dedication of two men. The first gave his life to save the man he saw for the first time in his life.
Skydiving instructor Robert Cook and his student Kimberley Dear were about to make their first jump when the plane's engine failed. Cook told the girl to sit on his lap and tied their straps together. As the plane crashed to the ground, Cooke's body took the brunt, killing the man and leaving Kimberly alive.
Another skydiving instructor, Dave Hartstock, also saved his student from being hit. It was Shirley Dygert's first jump and she jumped with an instructor. Digert's parachute did not open. During the fall, Hartstock managed to get under the girl, softening the blow to the ground. Dave Hartstock injured his spine, the injury paralyzed his body from the very neck, but both survived.
A mere mortal Joe Rollino (Joe Rollino, pictured above) during his 104-year life did incredible, inhuman things. Although he weighed only about 68 kg, in his prime he could lift 288 kg with his fingers and 1450 kg with his back, for which he won various competitions several times. However, it was not the title of "The Strongest Man in the World" that made him a hero.
During World War II, Rollino served in the Pacific and received bronze and silver stars for gallantry in the line of duty, as well as three purple hearts for battle wounds, for which he spent a total of 2 years in the hospital. He took 4 of his comrades from the battlefield, two in each hand, while also returning to the heat of battle for the rest.
A father's love can inspire superhuman feats, and this has been proven by two fathers in different parts of the world.
In Florida, Joesph Welch came to the rescue of his six-year-old son when an alligator grabbed the boy's arm. Forgetting his own safety, Welch hit the alligator in an attempt to force it to open its mouth. Then a passer-by arrived and began to beat the alligator in the stomach until the beast finally let go of the boy.
In Mutoko, Zimbabwe, another father saved his son from being attacked by a crocodile in a river. Father Tafadzwa Kacher started poking the cane into the animal's eyes and mouth until his son ran away. Then the crocodile took aim at the man. Tafadzwa had to gouge out the animal's eyes. As a result of the attack, the boy lost his leg, but he will be able to tell about the superhuman courage of his father.
Two ordinary women raised cars to save their loved ones
Not only men are capable of displaying superhuman abilities in critical situations. The daughter and mother showed that women can be heroes too, especially when a loved one is in danger.
In Virginia, a 22-year-old girl saved her father when a jack slipped from under the BMW he was working under and the car fell on the man's chest. There was no time to wait for help, the young woman lifted the car and moved it, then gave her father CPR.
In Georgia, the jack also slipped and a 1,350 kg Chevy Impala fell on a young man. Alone, his mother Angela Cavallo lifted the car and held it for five minutes until her son was pulled out by neighbors.
Superhuman abilities are not only strength and courage, but also the ability to think and act quickly in an emergency.
In New Mexico, a school bus driver had a seizure that put children in danger. The girl waiting for the bus noticed that something had happened to the driver and called her mother. The woman, Rhonda Carlsen, took immediate action. She ran next to the bus and gestured to one of the children to open the door. After that, she jumped inside, grabbed the steering wheel and stopped the bus. Thanks to her quick reaction, none of the students were hurt, not to mention the people passing by.
A truck with a trailer was driving along the edge of a cliff in the dead of night. The cab of a large truck stopped right above the cliff, the driver was in it. A young man came to the rescue, he broke the window and pulled the man out with his bare hands.
This happened in New Zealand in the Wayoka Gorge on 5 October 2008. The hero was 18-year-old Peter Hanne, who was at home when he heard the roar. Without thinking about his own safety, he climbed onto the balancing car, jumped into a narrow gap between the cab and the trailer, and broke the rear window. He carefully helped the injured driver out while the truck staggered under his feet.
Hanne was awarded the New Zealand Medal of Bravery in 2011 for this heroic act.
War is full of heroes who risk their lives to save fellow soldiers. In the movie Forrest Gump, we saw how a fictional character saved several of his co-workers, even after he was wounded. In real life, you can meet the plot and abruptly.
For example, here is the story of Robert Ingram, who received the Medal of Honor. In 1966, during the siege by the enemy, Ingram continued to fight and save his comrades even after he was wounded three times: in the head (as a result, he partially lost his sight and became deaf in one ear), in the arm and in the left knee. Despite being wounded, he continued to kill the North Vietnamese soldiers who attacked his unit.
Aquaman is nothing compared to Shavarsh Karapetyan, who rescued 20 people from a sinking bus in 1976.
The Armenian champion in speed swimming was jogging with his brother when a bus with 92 passengers ran off the road and fell into the water 24 meters from the shore. Karapetyan dived, kicked out the window with his feet and began to pull out people who by that time were in cold water at a depth of 10 m. They say that it took 30 seconds for each person he saved, he saved one by one until he lost consciousness in cold and dark water . As a result, 20 people survived.
But Karapetyan's exploits did not end there. Eight years later, he rescued several people from a burning building, suffering severe burns in the process. Karapetyan received the Order of the Badge of Honor of the USSR and several other awards for underwater rescue. But he himself claimed that he was not a hero at all, he just did what he had to.
A man lifted a helicopter to rescue his colleague
A TV show site turned into a tragedy when a helicopter from the hit series Magnum P.I. crashed into a drainage ditch at 1988 year.
During landing, the helicopter suddenly banked, went out of control and fell to the ground, while everything was filmed. One of the pilots Steve Kaks (Steve Kux) was trapped under a helicopter in shallow water. And then Warren "Tiny" Everal (Warren "Tiny" Everal) ran up and lifted the helicopter from Cax. It was a Hughes 500D which weighs at least 703kg empty. Everal's quick reaction and his superhuman strength saved Cax from a helicopter pinning him in the water. Despite the fact that the pilot injured his left hand, he escaped death thanks to a local Hawaiian hero.

Are there any role models in our lives today, people we want to be like? It was not easy for us, students of the 5th grade, to answer this question. Arnold Schwarzenegger? Bruce Willis? Jackie Chan? But these are all “foreign” heroes. And not heroes at all, but actors who create images of “super heroes” on the screen. In life, they are ordinary people. And it is not even known how each of them would behave in an extreme situation. Therefore, today it is very important to know that your peers live next to you, who will come to the rescue at any moment. Today we will tell true stories about children-heroes of our time.

Hero of our time ZHENIA TABAKOV The youngest hero of Russia. A real man who was only 7 years old. The only seven-year-old recipient of the Order of Courage. Unfortunately, posthumously. The tragedy broke out on the evening of November 28, 2008. Zhenya and his twelve-year-old older sister Yana were alone at home. An unknown man who introduced himself as a postman rang at the door. Entering the apartment and closing the door behind him, instead of a letter, the “postman” took out a knife and, grabbing Yana, began to demand that the children give him all the money and valuables. Having received an answer from the children that they did not know where the money was, the criminal demanded that Zhenya look for them, and he dragged Yana into the bathroom. Zhenya grabbed a kitchen knife and, in desperation, stuck it into the criminal's lower back. Howling in pain, he loosened his grip, and the girl managed to run out of the apartment for help. In a rage, pulling the knife out of himself, he began to thrust it into the child (there were eight stab wounds incompatible with life on Zhenya's body), after which he fled.

These kids are real heroes! Naturally, these are just a small part of the names of selfless children who are ready to help at the cost of their lives.
I think we all lack the description of "our" domestic good, disinterested and truly heroic deeds. Therefore, I present to your attention stories about hero children who, at the cost of their lives and health, without hesitation rushed to the rescue of those who needed help.
Zhenya Tabakov
The youngest hero of Russia. A real man who was only 7 years old. The only seven-year-old recipient of the Order of Courage. Unfortunately, posthumously.
The tragedy broke out on the evening of November 28, 2008. Zhenya and his twelve-year-old older sister Yana were alone at home. An unknown man called at the door, who introduced himself as a postman who allegedly brought a registered letter.
Yana did not suspect anything was wrong and allowed him to come in. Entering the apartment and closing the door behind him, instead of a letter, the “postman” took out a knife and, grabbing Yana, began to demand that the children give him all the money and valuables. Having received an answer from the children that they did not know where the money was, the criminal demanded that Zhenya look for them, and he dragged Yana into the bathroom, where he began to rip off her clothes. Seeing how he rips off his sister's clothes, Zhenya grabbed a kitchen knife and, in desperation, stuck it in the criminal's lower back. Howling in pain, he loosened his grip, and the girl managed to run out of the apartment for help. In a rage, the failed rapist, pulling the knife out of himself, began to thrust it into the child (eight stab wounds incompatible with life were counted on Zhenya's body), after which he fled. However, the wound inflicted by Zhenya, leaving behind a bloody trail, did not allow him to escape from the chase.
Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 20, 2009 No. For courage and dedication shown in the performance of civic duty Tabakov Evgeny Evgenievich was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage. The order was received by Zhenya's mother Galina Petrovna.
On September 1, 2013, a monument to Zhenya Tabakov, a boy driving a kite away from a dove, was unveiled in the school yard.

Maxim Konov and Georgy Suchkov
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, two third graders rescued a woman who fell into an ice hole. When she was already saying goodbye to life, two boys passed by the pond, returning from school. A 55-year-old resident of the village of Mukhtolova, Ardatovsky district, went to the pond to draw water from the Epiphany hole. The ice hole was already covered with ice, the woman slipped and lost her balance. In heavy winter clothes, she found herself in icy water. Clinging to the edge of the ice, the unfortunate woman began to call for help.
Fortunately, at that moment two friends Maxim and Georgiy were passing by the pond, returning from school. Noticing the woman, they, without wasting a second, rushed to help. Having reached the ice-hole, the boys took the woman by both hands and pulled her out onto strong ice. The guys accompanied her to the house, not forgetting to grab a bucket and a sled. Arriving doctors examined the woman, provided assistance, she did not need hospitalization.
Of course, such a shock did not pass without a trace, but the woman does not get tired of thanking the guys for staying alive. She gave her rescuers soccer balls and cell phones.
Vanya Makarov
Vanya Makarov from Ivdel is now eight years old. A year ago, he rescued his classmate from the river, who fell through the ice. Looking at this little boy - a little over a meter tall and weighing only 22 kilograms - it's hard to imagine how he alone could pull the girl out of the water. Vanya grew up in an orphanage with his sister. But two years ago he got into the family of Nadezhda Novikova (and the woman already had four of her children). In the future, Vanya plans to go to study at a cadet school in order to become a lifeguard later.

Among those who ran to help was 14-year-old Maxim Kobychev. Having learned that there were people in the house, he, not at a loss in a difficult situation, entered the house and pulled a disabled woman out into the fresh air 1929 years of birth. Then, risking his own life, he returned to the burning building and carried out a man born in 1972.
Kirill Daineko and Sergey Skripnik
In the Chelyabinsk region, two friends of 12 years showed real courage, saving their teachers from the destruction caused by the fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite.
Kirill Daineko and Sergei Skrypnik heard their teacher Natalya Ivanovna calling for help from the canteen, unable to knock down the massive doors. The children rushed to save the teacher. First, they ran into the duty room, grabbed a reinforcing bar that came under their arm and knocked out the window into the dining room with them. Then, through the window opening, the teacher, wounded by glass fragments, was transferred to the street. After that, the schoolchildren discovered that another woman needed help - a kitchen worker, who was filled up with utensils that collapsed from the impact of the blast wave. Having quickly sorted out the blockage, the boys called for help from adults.

One of the guys on land managed to throw a life jacket to the drowning child, for which Lida pulled the girl to the shore.
Lida Ponomareva, the only one of the surrounding children and adults who found herself at the scene of the tragedy, without hesitation, threw herself into the river. Alina Gusakova and Denis Fedorov
During the terrible fires in Khakassia, schoolchildren saved three people.
On that day, the girl happened to be near the house of her first teacher. She came to visit a friend who lived next door.
I hear someone screaming, she said to Nina: “I'll come right now,” Alina tells about that day. - I see through the window that Polina Ivanovna is shouting: “Help!”. While Alina was saving a school teacher, her house, in which the girl lives with her grandmother and older brother, burned to the ground.
On April 12, in the same village of Kozhukhovo, Tatyana Fedorova and her 14-year-old son Denis came to visit their grandmother. Holiday anyway. As soon as the whole family sat down at the table, a neighbor came running and, pointing to the mountain, called to put out the fire.
We ran up to the fire and started putting it out with rags, - says Rufina Shaimardanova, Denis Fyodorov's aunt. - When most of them were extinguished, a very sharp, strong wind blew, and the fire went towards us. We ran to the village, ran into the nearest buildings to hide from the smoke. Then we hear - the fence is cracking, everything is on fire! I could not find the door, my thin brother darted through the crack, and then came back for me. And together we can't find a way out! Smokey, scary! And then Denis opened the door, grabbed my hand and pulled me out, then my brother. I have a panic, my brother has a panic. And Denis reassures: "Calm down Rufa." When we walked, I couldn’t see anything at all, the lenses in my eyes melted from the high temperature ...
This is how a 14 year old schoolboy saved two people. He not only helped to get out of the house on fire, but also brought him to a safe place.
