Sun And Moon Story
by Shreya Sharma in Age 0-3This is an amazing sun and moon story to read for kids online. Long ago, there lived a mother, brother, and sister. One day, the mother went to help at the party. “Watch the house well. I will bring some delicious pancakes and rice cakes,” said the mother. The brother and the sister thought of the rice cakes and waited for their mother.
It became dark in the mountain. The mother was hurrying home worried about the children but a dark shadow appeared. It was a scary tiger. The tiger said, “I won’t eat you up if you give me rice cake.” The mother gave the tiger a rice cake and it went into the jungle but the tiger kept asking for more again and again and ended up eating the mother too.

The children thought that their mother was back and rushed to the gate but they were surprised to see the tiger in their mother’s outfit. The tiger’s paw had sharp nails and the tiger’s teeth were scary. The children hugged each other and trembled. They ran to the backyard and went up the tree.
The tiger came near the tree and asked the children, “Children! How did you go up the tree?” “We used some sesame oil and came up,” the kids answered quickly. He put the sesame oil in his paws and tried to go up the tree, but he slipped down. The children laughed at the tiger. The girl said, “You should have used the ax!”
The tiger used an ax and began climbing the tree. The tiger’s small paw almost got the children. “Oh God! Send down a thick rope if you want to save us or send down a bare rope if you don’t want to save us,” said the boy. The children closed their eyes and prayed.
Suddenly, a thick rope came down from the sky. The tiger also prayed, “Send down a thick rope if you want to save us or send down a bare rope if you don’t want to save us!” A bare rope came down from the sky. The tiger didn’t even know it was a bare rope. The tiger fell down and died but nobody knew what happened to the children.
They both went high up in the sky. And the god blessed them with the powers. The brother became the Sun and the sister became the Moon!

Moon Books for Toddlers and Young PreschoolersOur youngest readers can start to learn about the moon with these simple stories:
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown – This classic story is cute with simple, but engaging illustrations. Many children can relate to the young bunny avoiding bedtime. While not really about the moon, it does reinforce the concept that the full moon is out at night.
Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes – This Caldecott winner, with its simple words and images, is easy for our youngest learners to follow. Kitten is super confused by what looks to be a bowl of milk in the sky. He spends the evening chasing it, with giggle-worthy results.
Moonbear by Frank Asch – This is another classic following a young, confused animal. Moonbear notices the moon getting smaller by the night and offers the moon his food. This story introduces children to the phases of the moon with a simple storyline and images. Frank Asch also has a series of books continuing Moonbear’s adventures with the moon if you enjoy this story!
Picture Books About Traveling to the Moon
Moon’s First Friends by Susanna Leonard Hill and illustrated by Elisa Paganelli – If you’re ready to introduce traveling to the moon, Moon’s First Friends is a perfect place to start! Moon sits up in the sky, watching the people on Earth and feeling lonely on her own. Finally, astronauts make their way to the moon and she gets to make friends for the first time! This story can also be a jumping point for learning about different historical periods or different countries through the beautiful images showing different times and places.
Molly on the Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal and illustrated by Diana Mayo – this new picture book, to be released in April 2022, takes place on the moon. Molly travels by rocket to an underground moon colony, along with her mom and little brother. She could only bring one toy with her, but she makes do with a little imagination. Then, after her pesky brother tries to take her toy she learns about the moon’s lower gravity, and about how much more fun she can have when she shares with her brother.
This beautifully illustrated, relatable story will be equally loved as a classroom read-aloud and as a lap-sharing book at home. The pacing is perfect for the preschool to first-grade set. Plus, moon facts are woven smoothly into the story, and there’s an informative, child-friendly author’s note at the end.
If You Decide to Go to the Moon by Faith McNulty and illustrated by Steven Kellogg- This book gives children an immersive experience of traveling to the moon. McNulty writes in the second person, telling children what to pack and how to go about traveling to the moon. This is an excellent choice for elementary children – it brings traveling to the moon to life while providing facts at the same time.
Other Picture Books About the MoonThanking the Moon by Grace Lin- This book brings Asian culture to life with a story about a Chinese-American family celebrating the mid-autumn moon festival. This story shows how every family member is involved in preparing for their nighttime picnic, ending the night by sending thanks and a wish to the moon. The beautiful illustrations help set the mood and timeline for the story. It’s simple enough for young children to understand and gives resources in the back for older children (or even curious adults) to dig deeper into the holiday!
Max and the Tag-Along Moon by Floyd Cooper- As adults, we know the full moon stays in the sky all night long. If you’re ready to introduce your child to this concept, Max and the Tag-Along Moon is an excellent place to start! Throughout the story, Max watches the moon follow him home from his grandpa’s until suddenly, it disappears! At first, he worries it got lost. Then he arrives back home, and the moon comes out from behind the clouds. The beautiful illustrations are engaging and add to this sweet story about the moon and family always being with you.
What the Sun Sees, What the Moon Sees by Nancy Tafuri- If you’re looking for a book illustrating the difference between night and day, check out What the Sun Sees, What the Moon Sees. Starting from one end, the book shows the bright colors and busyness of daytime. Flip the book over to find the dark, calmness of nighttime. This book is an excellent choice for younger elementary children and helps them visually see the difference between daytime with the sun and nighttime with the moon.
A Moon of My Own by Jennifer Rustgi and illustrated by Ashley White – this simple story captures the wonder of an ever-present moon. A little girl sees the different phases of the moon as she travels around the world. The silhouette artwork is captivating. I think this book could work for a range of ages – it has simple language, yet may open big questions about the moon and the earth.
If You Were the Moon by Laura Purdie Salas and illustrated by Jaime Kim – This poetic picture book about the moon also includes relevant facts on each page. For younger children, you could read the whole book without the facts. Older kids will appreciate learning little tidbits about phases of the moon, gravity, and tides.
Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle – This fanciful story is fun for children who understand that you can’t actually climb a ladder to the moon! It’s about a girl who wants to reach out and play with the moon. When she can’t touch it, she asks her father to get it for her.
I have read and re-read this story so many times, and I still love it. I think you and your littles will too.
Non-Fiction Books About the Moon
These books give children facts about the moon instead of telling stories about it. Use these nonfiction moon books to dig deeper in exploring and learning facts about the moon.
The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons- Gail Gibbons is known for her informational books where she goes straight to the source in her research and gives facts on all sorts of topics. The Moon Book is no different! This book gives information on the moon’s orbit, phases, and how the moon changes things on Earth, such as the tides. The images are clear and add to the information given, making it understandable for children of various ages.
Faces of the Moon by Bob Crelin and illustrated by Leslie Evans- This is a simple, yet informative book about the phases of the moon. This is excellent for children of any age, who have noticed the different “faces” of the moon and are ready to explore this concept. The illustrations are engaging and the story even includes rhymes to help children remember moon facts!
The Faces, or Phases, of the Moon by Baby Professor- In a similar vein, The Faces, or Phases, of the Moon talks about the different phases of the moon and their effects on our life on Earth. This book is intended for an older audience than Bob Crelin’s book, as it goes deeper into the information in a way older elementary students will understand. The photographs and crisp graphics give a clear view of the information on every page.
I hope your children enjoy discovering the moon through these books! I’d love to know any of your favorites we may have forgotten on this list!

gave people fire. Fire has become the greatest value in the world. And people were happy. They bathed in fire, used it, gave it to each other, cherished it. Their souls warmed from the fire, and love and peace lived in the world.
But then people began to treat fire as something ordinary. Stop protecting him. They stopped taking care of the fire and giving to each other. They did not notice how the fire in the world was becoming less and less. He began to fade. Where the fire disappeared, wars began, death came. People became cold and angry. Their hearts sank, their souls fell asleep. They stopped feeling, wanting, striving. They wandered the earth, bumping into each other, but at the same time they remained lonely and cold. This went on for many thousands of years. The world plunged into darkness. The world has become the personification of evil and cold. But no one noticed it. People have forgotten what fire is, what warmth is, what love is.
But one day, in the promised land, a handsome prince named Ahmed was born. He was handsome and smart. Built and dexterous. He won fights and conquered with his beauty and harmony. Many girls ran into him, he ran into many. But the hearts remained cold. And only longing lived in the souls.
In his country, the sky weighs so low above the earth that you can reach the stars with your hand. He liked to climb the highest mountain at night and look at the stars, but he did not tell anyone about this, because people had long ceased to look at the stars, they were like fire and angered people with their brilliance. But Ahmed was different, his soul aspired to the heights, he loved to look at the sparkle of the stars. They beckoned him, bewitched with their light. It seemed to him that there, high in the sky, among a billion sparkling dots, his dream lives. He peered into every star, hope lived in his soul, but that was all. The stars shone with their distant fire, not warming his soul.
One day he was lying on his high mountain and one star was looking at him. Her brilliance was so lingering and inviting. He began to peer at her. The star got brighter and brighter. She seemed to come very close to his face. And he saw in her the image of a girl. He made out her face so clearly, her eyes, her hair. It seemed to him that she, too, was looking at him with a longing look.
- Who are you? Ahmed asked.
– I am Lana, she answered.
“Luna,” he whispered, and his heart beat faster.
“And I’m Ahmed,” he said.
“Ahmed,” she repeated in a chant.
This made him warm inside. No one said his name as she was soft as honey.
- Where are you from? - he asked.
“I am from a distant northern country, it is always cold and dark here, and only the stars in the sky warm me,” she answered, “so every night I sit by the window and look at the sky. I love to look at the stars, they are like a reflection of a distant dream, forgotten and no longer needed by anyone, - she fell silent.
The young man's chest felt so tight looking at the image of a stranger. And a lump rolled up in my throat. But he was strong and firm, and managed to control himself.
“I will find you,” Ahmed shouted, “I will find you, no matter the cost!”
“Don’t make promises that you can’t keep,” she answered sadly, “in our world, no one has been looking for anyone for a long time. Our world is dark and cold, nobody needs anyone. The girl lowered her head and sighed heavily.
With these words, the star went out.
“I will find you,” he whispered as he walked down the mountain.
Ahmed was a very noble and courageous young man, a feeling settled in his soul that was not there before, his soul languished and did not know peace. Thoughts about the beautiful stranger did not leave him. Every night he came to the mountain and looked with his eyes for a star in which the image of a beautiful girl lived. She came to him. They could talk for hours. He told her about his country, about the customs of his people, and she about hers. A tenderness was born between them, which he did not know before. His heart was filled with tremulous warmth. Her voice enveloped him like a cloud, it seemed to him that the whole universe was filled with an unknown meaning. The mountains, the sky, the stars all now breathed, were filled with feeling. The world has come to life. This dark cold world has come alive. He felt her presence in the fast water of the stream, in the raindrop. He caught her scent in the gusts of wind. He felt her hands on him, how she stroked his face and hair. He could taste her lips.
“I love you,” he whispered in the darkness.
“And I love you,” she answered.
But still she remained so distant, and a slight note of sadness was always in her words. And he decided to find a girl. Nobody understood his decision, his friends laughed at him, his relatives condemned him.
– Why do you need this? - they said, - chasing a dream, what's the point, it will not bring you wealth, - they said, - leave this unnecessary idea.
But he no longer listened to anyone, only the call of his heart. And then one day he set off. A sad picture met his eyes. A black cold world lay before him. He traveled through different countries, met different people, but everyone only wanted to deceive each other. Only deceit pleased people and money. For a second, their faces flashed with predatory happiness at the sight of money, and then faded again. So he traveled to many countries. Wherever he was, he asked about the beautiful girl Lana. But no one knew her. Everyone just shrugged.
- Does she have a lot of money? people asked, and turned away from him with laughter.
And he went on and on. Until he arrived in one small country and the boy at the gate told him that there was a girl in this country and her name was Lana. And she lives in a big cold tower at the very top, where no one wants to live, because the stars shine very brightly there, and people don't like it.
Ahmed found this tower. It was so tall, it seemed that it rests directly on the sky. But he was not afraid and began to climb up. The ascent was very difficult and dangerous. But he climbed to the very top. In the tower, by the window, a girl was sitting, the beauty of which made Ahmed's heart ache. He recognized her, it was her, his dream.
- I found you! he exclaimed.
- I've been waiting for you! she answered quietly.
He went up to her, took out and gave her his heart, so strong and hot, and she gave him hers, small and quivering. And at that moment, a tiny light lit up between them. They were frightened, no one had seen fire in the world for a long time, but it was so similar to the brilliance of stars and they began to protect it. The flame kept growing, they warmed it with their breath, fanned it slowly so as not to blow it out completely. They took care of him. Gradually, the light became larger and larger, and turned into a huge flame. And Ahmed and Lana were happy. The love grew stronger and stronger.
“You are my moon,” he told her.
“You are my fire,” she told him.
“You are my love,” they said to each other, and the fire gained new strength.
Their fire, which arose suddenly, due to an unprecedented feeling of love, became so huge and beautiful that it could warm the whole world.
But people were afraid to approach the tower, the flame frightened them. They began to say that something terrible had settled in the tower, something that was burning and incinerating, that one could die from this flame. And then people decided to put out this fire. They gathered together around the tower and began to blow with all their might, but the flame from this flared up even more. Then they called for help from the wind. But from the wind the flame became so huge that no one and nothing could blow it out. People even wanted to destroy the tower, but the fire did not allow them to come close. And then they retreated, and only from afar looked at the light that spread around and so frightened them.
Once a boy who did not know that one should be afraid of fire came very close to the tower and from the fire he became warm. He took a piece of fire and brought it to his home. And it became warm in his house too. Suddenly everyone saw each other. Joy settled in the boy's house. Then his family shared the fire with other people. Where the fire appeared, quarrels subsided. Goodness was born between people. People became bolder and stopped being afraid of the tower. They began to go to her and take small lights from the big fire and carry them to their homes. And gradually the light spread all over the world. And the world became sunny and warm again. Wars have ended in the world and evil has died. People found goodness and love, and never again lost or betrayed the fire.
It was a very, very long time ago.
Ahmed and Lana remained forever up there in the tower, high, high in the sky, even today they give their fire to those who need it ....
Moonlight Lamb - a fairy tale for children
Author Daskalova Liana
It was a long time ago. In the mountains, in a remote village, there lived a boy. White-headed, with large thoughtful eyes. He limped and would rather sit and blow a pipe than play with other children who were tumbling and fooling around like circus performers. In their amusements, the lame boy was the last, and the piper was the first.
Then one evening the boy took the pipe and put it to his lips. The gentle sounds clouded his eyes. And it seemed to the boy that on his little house, on the crest of a sloping roof, a yellow ripe pear lurked. Sweet juice flows from the pear.
- Dad, - the boy asked, - get a pear.
I think you guessed it: the family was poor. Sweets were put on the table infrequently.
Father climbed onto the roof. There was no pear. Only the round moon in the sky turned yellow and seemed to be laughing.
- Are you fooling my lame boy? - said the father in the hearts. - Good fun!
He even burst into tears from grief.
Luna felt ashamed. She hid behind a cloud and became sad.
She is considered to be some kind of mischief, snarky. And she herself is meekness, integrity ... Yes, and an avid music lover. Do not feed bread, let me listen to music. She sat on the roof, leaned against the rickety chimney, went limp... And here on you: they call names...
Then it was still evening. And another night. The boy fell asleep and suddenly woke up. Looks: a small white lamb is grazing in the yard. Bleating almost inaudibly, nibbling grass. But not thick clover, as everyone would think, but moonlight spread over the earth like a fan. It was clear: this is not an ordinary lamb, but a fabulous creature. The whole glows, the hooves are cast with silver, and the legs are about to break, thin.
A boy went out into the yard and played the pipe. Quiet, careful. Because the lamb is lunar, it is like a glare of the moon, like a child's dream - you will inadvertently frighten it away. And the moon again froze over the poor peasant's yard, heard. Now she was on the alert and took care of herself so as not to go limp, not to become like a pear, like an apple: otherwise, again, some kid will misunderstand and send his father to the sky for fruit.
Yes, and next to it was a house with seven tiered verandas. In a large bedroom, on a large bed made of expensive wood, a big rich man was snoring. The white light flickering in the poor man's yard woke him up.
- Wife! He poked his wife with his elbow. “Get up and look: either the white fog has fallen, or—God forbid such a disaster!” - a white coin has rolled out of my piggy banks and is shining in the neighbor's yard.
"I want to sleep," said the wife. “So I will open only one eye.
But immediately, dumbfounded, she chattered:
— It's not a fog or a coin. A small silver lamb jumps around the yard.
Quite tiny - at least put it in your pocket.
- What was the matter? shouted the rich man. “Let’s cut this one, we’ll have silver wool.” You spin silver yarn, knit a silver sweater, and they will give me five gold coins for it!
The next night he opened the gate to him, and the yard was covered with small fragrant clover. The lamb smells the clover spirit, feasts and gets caught.
But can you lure the moon lamb? He nibbles on the moonlight spread out like a fan, he does not need alfalfa or clover.
- No, wife! Let's not miss the lamb. We’ll lure you with music, the rich man decided.
And as the moon rose, he sat down on the upper veranda and began to beat with a tablespoon on the copper pan, on which his wife baked banits for him - white puff pastries with cheese.
Moon lamb ran away, hid.
On the third night, when the boy began to play, and the lamb danced around him, the rich man and his wife, without further ado, broke into the poor man's house, grabbed the strange animal, put it in a bag - and go!
- Close the windows and doors, wife. Cover the cracks with dough. And then it will go away!
They stood in the middle of the room, untied the sack, turned their eyes, fumbled with their hands - there was no lamb.
— Where did you go! the rich man yelled. “Into the hole above the door!” How many times have you said shut up!
And the hole is tiny: not even a mouse can stick its tail in.
The robbers came out onto the veranda. They look down: in the neighbor's yard the moon lamb is dancing again, the lame boy is playing the pipe, and the moon has listened, leaning on the cloud...
Many years have passed since then. A white-headed boy from a remote village became a great musician. He composed more and more new melodies - one more beautiful than the other.
