Butterfly Math Activities for Preschool

Focus on beginning math skills with these butterfly math activities for preschoolers. Inside this eight-page worksheet pack, you’ll find the following math activities:

Number Formation

Learning to write numbers is an important preschool milestone. However, it can be a bit of a challenge for some kids.

This worksheet packet includes a handwriting page on which children will trace the numbers 1-25. You can laminate this page or slip it in a dry erase pocket to make it reusable. Have kids use a dry erase marker to complete the page, wipe it clean, and do it all over again.

Sorting by Size

Sorting by size is another important skill for preschoolers to learn. It helps them to understand similarities and differences, and to see relationships between objects.

The sorting by size worksheet in this printable pack encourages children to cut and paste three butterflies in order from smallest to largest. If they have trouble distinguishing the sizes with their naked eye, have them use snap cubes or paper clips to measure each one before sorting it.

Color Words

For many children, learning color words is their first exposure to vocabulary that goes beyond the familiar names of family members and common objects. Learning color words broadens their horizons and helps them to see the world in a new way.

In this pack, there is a page that focuses on color words – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Kids will read the color words in each box and color the butterfly accordingly.

If your child can’t read the color words yet, set out the six crayons and have them match the words on the crayon wrapper to the word in the box to color the butterflies.

Color by Number

At first glance, color by number worksheets may seem like nothing more than a simple coloring activity. However, these worksheets can actually teach preschoolers a variety of important skills.

They help children to develop fine motor skills and improve their hand-eye coordination. As children color in the different sections of the worksheet, they must pay close attention to the lines and numbers in order to stay within the lines.

Preschoolers will love completing the color by number in this pack to reveal the hidden image – an adorable butterfly.

Count and Color

For preschoolers, learning to count is an important stepping stone on the way to more complex math skills. And what better way to practice than with some fun worksheets?

This packet includes four count and color worksheets that are a great way for preschoolers to learn while they’re having fun. Each worksheet features a different group of objects to count. Kids will love counting the objects and then coloring them in according to the given instructions.

These worksheets are great for helping preschoolers develop their fine motor skills and number recognition. Plus, they’re just plain fun!

Butterflies and mathematics - mathematics, lessons

Butterflies and mathematics

The last lesson of the quarter is devoted to the repetition of the topic "All actions with decimal fractions." The lesson uses both educational and entertaining material. The teacher also distributes incentive tokens in the form of butterflies, which children, if desired, can color ( appendix 2 ). At the end of the lesson, the origami paper children fold and color their butterfly.

Homework: What do you associate with a butterfly? What butterflies would you like to tell your classmates about? Do a short presentation.

Equipment : projection board, projector, cut cards to start the lesson (attachment), incentive badges (appendix), worksheets (appendix).

Purpose of the lesson:

  • in a creative way recall all actions with decimal fractions, repeat the rules for actions with fractions,

  • in a fun way, get to know some types of butterflies9, with legends about butterflies,

You have fragments of pictures on the tables that you must collect. What unites the pictures you collected? (they depict insects). And in more detail you will get acquainted today with only one type of insect - this is .... ( application 1 )

Slide 1

(….butterflies) What associations do you have with butterflies? (you can try to count the number of butterflies in the picture)

Slide 2

Hello! Welcome to the lesson "Butterflies and Math"!

Slide 3

Do you know how, according to legend, butterflies appeared?

once the goddess of flowers flora decided to make God Zeus Gift: she took the purity of early
in the morning, the freshness of the mountain stream, the crystal shine CREATED A FLOWER THAT WAS UNEQUAL IN THE WHOLE WORLD. GOD ZEUS, SEEING SUCH A GREAT GIFT, CAN'T RESPOND AND KISSED THE TENDER PETALS. And - O MIRACLE! - THE FLOWER HAS BREAKED FROM THE STEM AND FLYED. SO, ACCORDING TO THE ANCIENT GREEK LEGEND, BUTTERFLIES APPEARED...))

Slide 4

Let's get acquainted with these amazing creatures.

Task 1. Count the examples orally, round the answers to the nearest integer and find out which butterfly will fly to which flower and which flower the butterflies will not land on?

Slide 5

Butterfly geometry is very complex, comparable to the most complex calculations in the aircraft industry (introductory information).

Task 2 . And now, having solved the task (given on the leaves, the guys work independently, for correctly solved examples they receive a butterfly token that they can color in), you will find out the name of the largest and most beautiful butterfly that lives in our country. (Answer: Mahaon) ( Appendix 3 )

No. 2

Slide 6 Babochka Mahaon

Slide 7

And one of the largest butterflies of the planet is atlas ( Attacus atlas) .

Add up the digits of answer No. 2 (c), multiply the resulting number by 1.2. You will get the wingspan of this butterfly in centimeters (up to 24 cm). The oral apparatus is not developed. Butterflies do not feed and live off the nutrients accumulated in the caterpillar stage.

Slide 8

Many photographers are engaged in macro photography of nature, including the creation of pictures of bright butterflies. But only the Norwegian Kjell Sandved saw the letters of the Latin alphabet on their wings and decided to collect them all! This occupation took the photographer 24 years. The idea to create such an unusual alphabet came to Kjell more than 25 years ago. “I noticed a butterfly inside an old cigar box. She had a perfect "F" on her wing. A light seemed to flash in my head: if one letter arose in nature, then it is likely that there are others! And I decided to be the first to find them.

Slide 9

Over the years of searching, the photographer found not only the letters of the alphabet and numbers from 1 to 9, but also found amazing patterns on the wings of butterflies and moths in the form of faces, eyes, animals and human figures.

Some butterflies have eyes that are similar in color and design to the eyes of an owl. These extraordinary images on the wings of a butterfly appeared as a result of evolution.

Task 3 . Complete the task (given on the leaves, the guys work independently, for correctly solved examples they receive a butterfly token that they can color in) and find out which butterfly travels more than 3000 km during migration. ( Appendix 4 )

Slide 13 - Republican butterfly

Slide 14

Why do children love the kaleidoscope? Because this is so fabulous, charming, excitingly beautiful. Mathematics is all permeated with beauty and harmony, only this beauty must be seen. This is how Mandelbrot himself writes in his book "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" - "Why is geometry often called cold and dry? One of the reasons lies in its inability to describe the shape of clouds, mountains or trees. Clouds are not spheres, mountains are not angles , the line of the coast is not a circle, the bark is not smooth, and the lightning is not a straight line..."

Slide 15

Look at the mysterious fractals - and the imagination will be carried away by a sparkling whirlwind of spirals, fantasy is thoughtfully spinning and fluttering like a light butterfly, and creative thought is amazed at the richness of colors and the perfection of lines.

With the fractal approach, chaos... ceases to be synonymous with disorder and acquires a fine structure. Fractal science is still very young and has a great future ahead of it. The beauty of fractals is far from being exhausted and will still give us many masterpieces - those that delight the eye, and those that bring true pleasure to the mind.

The iridescent nettle butterfly spread its wings and prepared to fly. A very beautiful fractal butterfly, large with large wings with rims, like bird feathers, yellow in color, turning into green towards the center.

Slide 16

The word fractal is derived from the Latin fractus and in translation means consisting of fragments.

Slide 17

One of the main properties of fractals is self-similarity. In the simplest case, a small part of the fractal contains information about the entire fractal.

Task 5. Can you make a butterfly? Of course, from wood, from threads, and even from plastic bottles! Slides 18-20

Slides 21 - And for Valentine's Day, a butterfly can be made from ... chewing gum.

Slide 22 You brought paper and colored pencils (felt-tip pens) to class. Let's make an origami butterfly together.

Let's smile together - slide 23.

And at the end of the lesson, get acquainted with the parable of the butterfly:

Slide 24

According to an ancient Indian legend, butterflies are someone's souls that did not fly to heaven.

And God sent them to earth to fulfill the postmen's assignment.

"Whisper of Desire" - you need to whisper so quietly to a butterfly so that it remains a mystery to all earthly creatures, and let it go.

Butterflies do not know how to speak, so on their wings she will deliver the request directly to heaven and the wish will surely come true.

Home Work: What do you associate the concept of "butterfly" with? What butterflies would you like to tell your classmates about? Do a short presentation.

Thank you for the lesson!
