How many letters are in the Spanish Alphabet?
The Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, that’s one more letter than in the English alphabet, thanks to the ñ.
Now you might be wondering, “what about ch, and ll, I definitely learned those in Spanish 101?”
Well, yes, you might have, but the Real Academia Española declared that ch and ll are no longer part of the Spanish alphabet because in all reality, they are actually digraphs, two letters that combine together to correspond to one sound.
Therefore, the contemporary Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters.

Learn the ABCs in Spanish through books
Books are my next best resource when using our minority language at home. Raising my son in my nonnative language can present difficulties sometimes as my Spanish vocabulary is not as extensive as my English vocabulary. However, through books, I can teach my son new vocabulary while learning new words myself!
Last week, I published a post on 23 ABC books in Spanish for preschoolers. I own some of these myself, and I highly recommend El abecedario de emociones. This book is more directed at older preschoolers, but even younger and older children will enjoy it. For each Spanish letter in the alphabet, the book offers an emotion, and along with that emotion, it includes a beautiful poem.
We have been working through one letter each night, but let me tell you, I find myself learning so much Spanish too!

Spanish Reading Rules for Beginners
From the very beginning of learning a foreign language, the first thing to do is to get to know its letters and sounds. We recommend that you watch our video and carefully follow the rules for pronunciation of the sounds described in the table below in order to avoid mistakes and establish the correct pronunciation from the very first Spanish lesson.
Spanish vowels
Pronounced the same as the Russian letter [а] under stress
Consonant with the Russian letter [e] under stress
Equivalent to the Russian letter [i].
Sounds like an accented [o], never pronounced like A.
Sounds like the Russian letter [u] when pronouncing the lips are pulled into a tube.
Spanish consonants
- If the letter "B" is at the beginning or in the middle of a word after the letters "m" and "n", it will be pronounced similar to the Russian sound [b]
– Between vowels and before other consonants “B” will sound like a cross between Russian sounds [b] and [v]
- If the letter "C" is in front of the letters a, o, u and consonants, in this case it is pronounced like a Russian sound [k]
- If the letter "C" is in the word before the letters e and i, in this case it sounds like a voiceless interdental sound [θ]
- The letter "D" in Spanish is pronounced softer than the Russian sound [d], but does not sound dull
- Pronounced exactly like the Russian sound [f]
- If the letter "G" stands before the vowels "a", "o", "u" and consonants, or is in the combination "GU" (where the letter "U" is not pronounced), then this letter sounds like a Russian sound [g]
(the exception is the letter “Ü” if there are two dots above it ( la diéresis), in which case the letter is pronounced like Russian [g])
– If “G” comes before the vowels “e ” and “i”, in this case it will sound like a Russian sound [x]
- The letter "H" is never read in Spanish words.
- This letter is similar in sound to the Russian voiced sound [x].
- The letter "K" is pronounced exactly the same as the Russian letter [k].
- The letter "L" in Spanish is pronounced a little softer than the similar Russian sound [l].
- The letter "M" is pronounced exactly the same as the Russian letter [m].
- Letter “N” is pronounced exactly the same as the Russian letter [n].
- The letter “Ñ” in words is read as a soft sound [n], for example, as in the Russian word “ cognac” .
- The letter "P" is pronounced the same as the Russian letter [p].
- This letter can only be used in combination “ QU” (where the letter “u” is not readable), “Q” in this case will sound like a Russian sound [k]
- Sounds the same as the Russian sound [r]. But when there is one letter “R” between vowels in a word, it sounds like a soft [p], when there are two “RRs”, the sound will be voiced.
- In the first case, the letter "S" sounds like a cross between the Russian sounds [s] and [sh].
- If the letter "S" comes before the consonants "d", "m" and "g", it will sound very similar to the soft Russian sound [з].
- The letter "T", sounds the same as the Russian letter [t], but always firmly, without softening before vowels
- If the letter “V” is at the beginning of the word and after “m”, “n”, it sounds closer to the Russian sound [b]
- Being in the middle of a word, the letter “V” sounds like something between the sounds [b] and [c]
- The letter "W" in Spanish is close in sound to the English sound [w]
- The letter "X" in Spanish sounds like a combination of Russian letters [ks]
- In the first case, the letter "Y" sounds like a Russian sound [and] mar y agua

How many letters are in the Spanish alphabet?
The number of letters in the Spanish alphabet has changed throughout history, so it's no surprise that you can still find versions of the alphabet starting with 29or 30 letters!
At the moment, the official Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters (since 2010) :
- 22 consonants
- 5 vowels
- 5 digraph (combination of 2 letters)
History of the Spanish Alphabet
The Spanish alphabet is a modified version of the Latin and Greek alphabets.
Over several centuries, the phonetics of the Spanish language has changed, and formed its basic rules with the creation of RAE (Royal Spanish Academy).
One of the first attempts to form the Spanish script and give it some form belongs to King Alfonso X the Wise. The Spaniards owe him the presence of the letter “Ñ” in the alphabet, because it was Alfonso X who introduced the doubled letter “N”, which in turn led to the appearance of such a feature as the letter “Ñ”.
The first person to publish the Rules of Spelling, as well as the creator of the Castilian Grammar, was Antonio de Nebrija, a well-known philologist, grammarian and teacher of those times.
Nebrija believed that the language was an "instrument of the empire" and sought to standardize pronunciation throughout Spain in line with Valladolid pronunciation. Which, of course, didn't happen.
After the establishment of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) in 1714, the aim of which was to preserve the etymology and historical pronunciation of the language, the basic norms of the Spanish language were fixed and some letters derived from the Greek or Latin alphabet were simplified or changed. And also, stresses were introduced in 1754.
Until the 20th century, new letters were added to the Spanish alphabet: so the last letter officially included in the alphabet was the letter W, in 1969, to represent the W sound characteristic of the Germanic languages.
The last revision of the alphabet took place in 2010, during which it was decided to remove the letters CH and LL from the alphabet and consider them digraphs or combinations of letters, but not individual letters.
