Sid the Science Kid Is Going Green
With Earth Day approaching very soon, children may have questions regarding the meaning of this day. Perhaps your child has heard you talk about things you do to preserve the environment, or they’ve heard about this special day from a friend or via another outlet. PBS Kids is celebrating Earth Day by helping children learn and explore ways they can take an active role in helping to sustain the earth’s resources. On April 22, the network will premier eco-themed episodes from Curious George, Super Why!, Sid the Science Kid, and more.
We got a first look at Sid the Science Kid’s Earth Day-themed episode entitled “The Dirt on Dirt.” If you and your child have never watched the show, I highly recommend checking it out. It is an animated series aimed at helping children aged 3 to 6, learn about science. (I’m singing the song in my head as I write this!) Children are very curious at this age and ask a lot of “why” questions. My son is already starting to use the “why” word! Five-year old Sid, begins each episode with a “Big Question” which drives the entire episode. The music is upbeat and the characters are fun and relatable. I like that the cast includes children from varied ethnic groups. Some of the unifying themes include the use of modern technology (they use computers), friendship and teamwork (Sid’s friends come together to answer the “Big Question”), and the importance of family (you’ll even find Sid’s grandmother in the show) . Here is a little more information about the series from the site:
“Sid the Science Kid” is a new educational animated television series using comedy to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. “Sid the Science Kid” features a practical in-school science curriculum, uses music and humor to celebrate children’s natural curiosity about science in everyday life. The energetic and inquisitive Sid starts each episode with a new question and embarks on a fun-filled day of finding answers with the help of family and friends.
While many of the topics are best understood by kids at the older end of the targeted age group, younger children will appreciate the humor and lightheartedness of the show. Overall, I appreciate a show that encourages exploration and demonstrates that learning can be fun. While I don’t want to give away the entire episode…here’s the dirt on the episode premiering April 22:
Sid wants to know what makes dirt so dirty. At school, Sid and his friends discover that dirt is really important to the Earth because it helps things grow, and it’s also filled with tiny rocks, pieces of leaves, and even living things like bugs and worms!
Be sure to tune in to your local PBS Kids TV station on April 22 for all of the eco-friendly happenings!

influence of eye color on character | School of Parenting Excellence
All parents are interested in the question: what color will their baby's eyes be in the future. To help them, doctors have developed a method, later called a calculator, that can help you find out.
Time of eye color change in children
Almost all newborns have blue or blue eyes. As the baby grows, their color may change. This happens at about the age of three, when normal final vision is formed. Less often, children are born with brown eyes. In this case, you should not expect that in later life they will experience any changes.
The degree of change in the shade of the eyes of a newborn
Parents, trying to determine the color of the baby's eyes, should not forget the simple truth that the color of the eyes can never become lighter than it was at birth. The effect of light on the eyes produces the substance melanin, which gives the eyes a particular shade.
Naturally, melanin is not produced in the mother's womb, since there is no light flow. In all babies, over time, the iris darkens and changes shades.

Children with blue eyes
If the blue color of the eyes is laid at the gene level, then as the child grows older, the saturation of the tone will increase, but not the shade.
It is generally accepted that green eyes are the most "playful". In light-eyed children, a color change may occur not necessarily at 3 years, as determined by statistics, but at 4 and even 5 years.
Brown-eyed babies
A two-month-old baby's warm iris indicates that he will become a brown-eyed person. At the age of three, he will finally form a brown color, with which he will live all his life.
Children with green iris
A baby will develop a green iris if his parents have different colored eyes. A "wandering" green tint will change in a child up to 3 years old.
Babies with gray eye shells
The gray color of the eyes laid down at the gene level is clearly visible in a baby as early as six months. Hue saturation may increase over the years, but the color will remain unchanged.
Newborn eye color prediction
Melanin is the main substance that influences the formation of eye color. The process of accumulating melanin in the body of a baby is quite long, but already at the age of six months you can most likely find out what eye color will be in the future. Experts say that by carefully examining the specks in the eyes, you can accurately determine the future shade of the eyes.
Determining the color of the child's eyes in the future
Genes are responsible for the formation of the child's eye color. However, it is not entirely clear whose genes will come out as winners in the future: father's or mother's genes. The child is the heir of the genes of both parents. As a rule, saturated dark colors come out the winner, green shades are considered weaker, and blue or blue are the weakest.
Traced patterns
Scientists traced the following patterns in the formation of eye color in a child:
- brown-eyed babies never change eye color;
- both brown-eyed parents pass on their eye color to the child in 76% of cases, the probability that the eyes will acquire a green tint is 20%, and only in 4% of such babies;
- if one of the parents has brown eyes and the other has blue eyes, then the baby is equally likely to have brown or blue eyes;
- brown-eyed and green-eyed parents in 50% of cases, the baby may have brown eyes, 35% green, and 15% blue eyes;
- both green-eyed parents will end up with a green-eyed heir in 76%, and a blue-eyed one in 24%;
- blue-eyed parents can be sure that their child will have eyes of the same color. See also: How to determine by date of birth who the child's guardian angel is and how to understand that the protector is nearby
Inheritance of eye color from grandparents
Genetic science is quite complex and not always predictable. Therefore, parents should not be surprised if they both have brown eyes, and the born child will become a blue-eyed heir. You can not discount the color of the eyes of grandparents. It is possible that their eye color will be passed down to your child through the generations.
Remember that the strongest color is brown and the weakest is blue. Despite this, having ancestors with blue eyes, there is a chance that your child will also become the owner of blue eyes.
Rare eye color
On our planet, the most numerous category are people with brown eyes. And the rarest category is the owners of green eyes. They have only about 2% of the inhabitants of our land. That is why in the old days such people were credited with unusual properties and character traits. It was believed that green is a sign of witchcraft powers.
Influence of eye color on vision
The myth that a newborn sees all objects upside down is, of course, a delusion of ignorant people.
