Sight Words Memory is the standard Memory card game — sometimes called the Concentration game — with the additional element of having the student read the word on each card as they turn it over. This provides a lot of opportunities for repetition in sight reading.

Sight Words Memory

Learning the Sight Words Memory game is easier if the child has previously played the standard Memory game, but the game is simple enough that this is not necessary.

Memory works very well as a solo game. Memory can also be played in a group of up to four players.

↑ Top

Memory can be played with just a set of the Memory Cards.

  • Memory Cards
  • Printer
  • Cardstock printer paper (approx. 110 lb / 200 gsm)
  • Scissors

Create Memory Cards with our Memory Card Creator and print the cards out on cardstock paper. Then cut out the cards along the dotted lines. The set should contain two copies of each word you want to review.

Begin with a small set of cards (10 word pairs), and as your child’s competence with the activity increases, increase the number of cards you use in a game. An advanced student can handle up to 25 word pairs.

↑ Top

The game is played in much the same way as the standard Memory Card Game, with the addition of the players reading the word on each card as they play the game. The goal is to collect as many pairs of matching word cards as possible.

Video: How to Play Sight Words Memory

To set up the game, shuffle the cards and arrange them, face down, in a grid. For example, a deck of 30 cards (15 word pairs) is best laid out in a 5×6 grid, 5 columns of 6 cards each. The child picks one card and turns it over so the word is visible, reading the word on the card. The child then picks a second card and also turns it over, reading the word on the second card.

If the words on the two overturned cards match, the player removes the pair, placing them by her side, and gets another turn. If the words do not match, the player turns the cards back over so the words are no longer showing, and the player to her right takes the next turn.

If a child is unable to read a word or reads a word incorrectly, give the child a bit of coaching to help them correct the mistake and learn the word.

Play continues until all the words are matched and there are no cards left unclaimed.

If a child is struggling with this game, you can read through all the word cards with them prior to the start of play to help refresh their recall of the words. You can also make the game easier by using a smaller deck of cards with fewer word pairs. For an advanced child, you can increase the number of words you use, so it becomes more difficult to find matching cards.

↑ Top

To make the game a little easier, especially for a younger child, simply use fewer pairs of cards.

↑ Top

When the child finds a matching pair of word cards, have her use the word in a sentence before she can add the cards to her “keep” pile.

↑ Top

When assessing a child’s mastery of the words, be sure to separate their reading skills from their skill at playing the Memory game. A child might have mastered the sight words on the cards and also have some difficulty remembering which card is where in the grid. Such a child might be fine with more advanced words but need a smaller number of cards. Another child who struggles to read the words will probably also have trouble remembering the location of the word cards.

↑ Top

You can create your own custom Memory Game Cards, with developmentally appropriate word sets. As the child’s sight words vocabulary expands, you should start to expand your card set with new words and gradually remove the words that have been mastered and no longer need intensive repetition.

10 Interactive Online Games to Teach Sight Words to Beginning Readers

Sight words and high frequency words are an important part of teaching new readers. These words have to be memorized, which means they require a lot of repetition and practice. I love using these online games to teach sight words in my classroom.

Sight word instruction can be really challenging in the classroom because you have a classroom filled with students who learn different things in different ways at different paces. 🥴

It requires so much repetition and practice, yet all of our students need those things in different ways.

I tackle sight word instruction from all sides. We read them in sentences, practice them with music and movement, do art projects, and more!

These 10 online games to teach sight words are FREE and super interactive. [Free as of August 2019] They give students the chance to practice identifying, matching and reading sight words, all while playing fun games.

Note: Did you know there is a difference between sight words and high frequency words? I thought they were the same for the longest time. Knowing their differences has helped me with my instruction. Read more about that here!

Sight Word Bingo

This classic bingo game from abcya.com is a favorite for all of my students. The little amoeba monster at the top says a word, then the student identifies it and clicks it.

This game words great on a computer or on an interactive white board. I have my students take turns at the SmartBoard in my classroom during a center or we do it whole group when we have a minute to spare.

No matter when we use it, it’s a student favorite. 👍🏼

Sight Word Smash

Students love this fun, sight word identification game. The computer says a word. Then they use the pointer to find it and smash it.

I like this game because the word is on more than one block so students get the repetition of seeing and identifying the word multiple times!

Sight Word Memory

There are many, many sight word memory games online but this one is my favorite. I like that the computer says the word as you flip the card, whether it’s a match or not.

Seeing and hearing a word multiple times is perfect for auditory and visual learners. I also appreciate that when they finish a level, they can keep playing with new words!

Sight Words in Space

Students love this space themed sight word game. A cat says the word they are trying to find. Words float by in power cells and they have to click the right one.

The words are floating up so students have to identify them quickly. Just like in Sight Word Smash, words appear more than one time, too. 👏

Listen & Spell

I absolutely love this Listen & Spell game! We know that readers struggle with sight words because they do not follow phonics rules or because they are too advanced. We also know that students learn to read and write words at the same time.

This game gives them the chance to spell sight words with a limited number of letters at the bottom. First it says the word, then students use the yellow letters to spell it. The only letters available are letters that are in the word.

Playing this game helps students move on from “identifying” to “creating” on Bloom’s Taxonomy, which we know helps make information stick. Students will gain confidence in writing their sight words as well as reading them!

Sight Word Jigsaw

This identification game uses the same concepts as matching, except students are able to see all of the words at one time. They click the sound button on one of the yellow pieces to hear the word they are looking for. Then they find the blue word puzzle piece and drag it over.

I like that this game adds the element of looking at several words to find the correct one. It gives students practice at quickly identifying words by their beginning sounds.

Popcorn Words

Students playing this game are working the popcorn machine at a movie theater. A monkey comes up to the counter and says a sight word. Students click on the correct sight word to give it to the monkey.

Once they have handed out 10 popcorn buckets correctly, they get to play a quick in-between game and then are promoted. Their goal is to become the manager. I’m sure it will not surprise you to hear that my students beg to play this game!

Kitten Hop

This silly game is another favorite of my students. They are playing a kitten who bounces from yarn ball to yarn ball. The computer says a sight word. That word is on one of the four yarn balls in front of the one your kitten is on.

Students love this game because they are racing three other kittens. The winner is the one who reaches the couch at the end of the game first. They have to be quick at matching the sight word their hear to the correct ball of year if they want to win!

Note: this game has options at the beginning for choosing a color, a name, etc. You will want to teach your students how to do this quickly (and set that expectation) so that they can do it independently.

Starfall Sight Words

Though I’ve already included a Memory Sight Word game, who doesn’t love Starfall? In this sight word game, the students need to determine if it is the same sight word by sight alone as it is not read until the match is made. But I love that they have three stars in the upper left corner to show their progress to the next level.

Once the student completes the game, they can move on to Level 2, where the sight words are slightly more difficult. The students love moving up a level to show their achievement!

My Reading Tools

In My Reading Tools, students see a kangaroo get several tools to become a better reader. The first tool is a flashlight. He uses it to highlight words in a dark cave.

This game is more challenging than the rest because students are asked to finish the sentence with the word spelled correctly. The computer reads the sentence. Then students hover their flashlight around the cave to find the word. 🔦

In this example, I was looking for the word “again.” The other options in the cave were misspelled words “agin,” “agane,” etc. This game is perfect for students who are confidently reading many sight words and are ready for a challenge!

These 10 online games to teach sight words are perfect for giving students extra practice and lots of repetition during centers in my classroom. Did I miss any of your favorites? How do you like to practice sight words? Let me know below! 👇

Wordle: what is it and how to play

January 14 News Games

We tell you what kind of game it is, what variations there are and what the colored squares mean in social networks.

In the past few months, social media users have been posting strange patterns with gray, yellow and green squares. If you didn't know what it is, then these are the results of the wordle puzzle game, available from any device right in the browser.

What is Wordle and how to play it

Wordle is a game where you have to guess just one English word from five letters. You have six tries for this. First you need to enter any word in the top line of the playing field.

If at least one letter in your word matches the hidden one, then it will be highlighted in green when it is in the right place, and yellow when it is in the wrong place. If all the cells of your word remain gray, then the search word does not contain these letters at all.

Then, taking into account the guessed letters, you can enter a new word, and then the next - until you guess the hidden one or you run out of attempts.

If successful, you can share the result on social networks - Wordle will copy your playing field with all cell colors, but without letters. The resulting diagram will show your attempts, but will not reveal the solutions to other players. The number of the puzzle will also be given.

Play Wordle→

Why Wordle attracts players

An important feature of Wordle is that all players solve the same word, and every day it is new. Even if you win, you will have to wait until tomorrow for the next puzzle - the update happens after midnight.

The one-word-for-all format allowed for a small element of competition. The success of solving the puzzle is reflected in the number of attempts, which netizens talk about when they share their results.

With all this, the game does not require a good knowledge of English, an average vocabulary is enough, which will constantly grow with Wordle. However, if you wanted the same puzzle in Russian, then it already exists.

5 alternatives to Wordle

1. Russian Wordle

Alexander Belousov, a developer from Russia, launched a Russian-language analogue of Wordle, which has already been played by more than 10,000 people in two days since its release. Mobile applications are planned to be released soon.

2. Wordle without limits

If you are satisfied with the English version, but would like to play much more often and more, then there is Hello Wordl. The principle there is exactly the same, but there is no limit on the number of games. In addition, the size of the field can be varied by changing the number of letters in words from 4 to 11.

Hello Wordl →

3. Wordle for time

With Seven Wordles, the word search task can be complicated by adding timing. In this variation, you need to solve seven puzzles in a row in the shortest amount of time possible. Accordingly, it is no longer necessary to share here with attempts, but with numbers on the timer.

Seven Wordles →

4. Wordle for the most patient

An alternative called Absurdle can be called an endless simulator that will help hone your word selection skills. There is no clear end word and no limit on the number of moves. The game simply reduces the list of possible solutions after each of your moves, delaying the end of the game.

5. Wordle with swear words

If you speak English well enough, you probably know some slang words or swear words. It is they, as well as various obscene words, that will be needed to solve Sweardle puzzles.

Bonus: Wordle for real Pokemon fans

If you are an experienced Pokemon Go player or just know all the Pokemon, then you should definitely test yourself in Squirdle. This is an analogue of Wordle, where Pokemon parameters are used instead of letters: generation, type 1 and type 2, size and weight. To begin with, it is enough to enter the name of any pokemon in the field (there is a drop-down list), and, taking into account the matches in the parameters, guess further.

What to do with your child on the road: road games - Gryntravel

Traveling with children is simple and extremely interesting. So that the road does not turn into torment and passes without whims with the questions “Well, how soon will we arrive ?!”, you need to think in advance what to do with the child on the way.

In a car, train, bus or plane, you can always come up with interesting entertainment. Each age has its own nuances. What is relevant for a child under one year old is clearly not suitable for a 3-year-old “why and why”. When our son was 1.5 years old, we drove 8000 km across the USA in 25 days. It was from that moment that we began to create a selection of not only board games, but also oral entertainment.

Where to start? The first thing to do is to inform a child of any age how much time you will spend on the road. This will set him up for a certain expectation. The phrase will not help here: “Drive 4 hours!”. It is better to visually show the distance, for example, on the spine of a book. If the bottom of the spine is where you left and the top is your destination, it becomes easy to show exactly where you are now and how much is left.

Stop in Tennessee, USA😎

Note: if the road is long, be sure to show when the stop is planned. The anticipation of the imminent "liberation" will help the child to move more calmly motionless sitting in a chair. On a road trip, try to make stops every 2 hours to jump and run.

  1. Let the child pack his backpack with travel games

This is a wonderful educational moment. Children feel their importance, responsibility and independence. Learn to plan and work in a team. This is a good experience for future trips. Of course, parental control, patience and love are indispensable here. It is important to explain, and then keep your word: “You will carry your backpack yourself – therefore, only the necessary things.”

There must be good reasons why you can't take a car on the remote control, and also a tractor and a sword😅

Note: the best age to start participating in collecting your backpack with games is 2. 5 - 3 years. The age of “why” is the time when the child begins to realize himself as a person. He often says: “I myself / myself”, does the opposite, proving his right to opinion and choice.

  1. Gadgets and books

Upgrade your equipment on the road: tablet, mobile phone, flash drive. Download cartoons, children's books, games, music, movies in advance.

We are driving across the USA, highway 66

Take with you peepers, they are also Wimmelbuchs - picture books without text. From one picture you can come up with many stories, and for each this story will be absolutely different from the others. Books develop speech, logic, attention.

We keep 2 books in the car:

  • “Great Machines – Helpers of People” by Wolfgang Metzger, price – 280 UAH. An indispensable book for children who love technology. It trains attentiveness, imagination, includes a team game “Who will find the object faster”.
  • “Move the road to Ukraine” Noa Kremenchukskaya, price – 150 UAH. The book presents five regions of Ukraine: Kyiv, Odessa, Carpathians, Poltava and Donetsk. At each turn there is a new area where the heroes of the book travel. As a result, you understand how different and incredibly interesting Ukraine is.

But on planes, trains and buses we love compactness , so our favorite is the book “Find and Show. Outdoors”, Clever publishing house, price – 300 UAH. Book-panorama, where you will find 5 bright folding panoramas and 155 items to search. Here you will have a sunrise in the mountains, and a walk through the forests and fields, as well as relaxing on the sea coast. The book is conveniently shaped, which allows you to take it on any trip. Ideal for children 3-7 years old.

Reading in a car or bus is harmful to children's eyesight, in this case an interesting audiobook is a great solution. On the road, a child can learn English, counting or letters, or just listen to a good story with the whole family. I want to say right away that electronic gadgets will not replace communication. As a rule, they quickly bother children. Therefore, for a long journey, there should be a good supply of games and entertainment.

Note: in the car we have an organizer bag with different pockets for a tablet, drinker, toys, books and other rubbish. Such a children's corner in one place. Every time I go on the road, I put something new for my son there: 40 minutes of silence is definitely guaranteed.

  1. Everything for drawing

Sketchbook or notebook, coloring books, pencils, colored pens and other creative tools - take up minimal space in your backpack and are perfect for trains and planes. We always take Aqua Doodle water painting kit (price 200 UAH) to the car or bus.

Compact bag for drawing shapes, numbers, letters. The painted art dries quickly and you can continue to create. We have a marker in the set and separately bought seals. The child is busy, everything is clean - happiness to everyone.

For trains and planes, we have a book with a marker. Infinite number of times you can trace and erase numbers:

  1. Board games

Starting from the age of 3, the issue of road games becomes especially relevant. It is best to take games without small details on a plane, car, train or bus. For example, on a trip to Central America, when my son was 2 years old, he loved to play Lego “Train with Numbers”: large parts where you can learn numbers up to 10 and seven colors.

In the process of traveling, we found our favorite board games. I want to share our experience with you, I'm sure you choose your basic set of road games here:

Twins, she's Doublet (price - 150 UAH) - a game for attention and quick reaction. Consists of 55 cards, each card has 8 different images. Between each two cards there is a match of only one image and your task is to find them. Who is the first, he shouts Twins, that is, a couple.

Compact and lightweight metal box is always with you and at hand😉

To be honest, this is our son's favorite game. And although Twins is designed for ages 4 and up, feel free to play with three-year-olds.

My first quiz Granna (price - 250 UAH) - the game develops associative thinking and memory. There are 90 picture cards in the set. Each participant chooses one card and answers the questions. For example, a card has a banana and three animals to choose from below: a cat, a monkey, and a dog. Who will eat the banana? If the participant knows the correct answer, he puts his finger in the hole under the selected image and turns over the card. If on the back this hole is circled in blue and a clown jumps over it - congratulations, the answer is chosen correctly.

We take only cards on the road

Ideal for children aged 3-7. The game teaches the basics of analysis and develops logic, and the clown on the back intrigues and encourages.

Explain the word. What is what? (price - 100 UAH) - more difficult than the Quiz and is designed for ages 5 and up. We started playing from 3 and quite successfully, although we get tired quickly. The goal of the game is to see the picture and explain the word. The picture cards are in three languages – Ukrainian, Russian and English. The child must explain the word, and the adult must guess and vice versa. The game provides an excellent opportunity to develop the child's speech, as well as learn Ukrainian, Russian and English.

Lotto magnetic road game The Purple Cow (price – UAH 200) is a well-known children's game in excellent performance. The kit includes a compact metal case, also known as the playing field, and 40 chips. The main difference is that images of animals are used instead of numbers. The game is played according to the following rules: we spin the drum, name the animal, close the corresponding cell with a magnetic chip. The winner is the one who first fills two horizontal lines or one vertical line. For some reason unknown to me, our son often beats me.

Of the minuses: the working surface is quickly scratched, but does not affect the speed

Note: take a closer look at The Purple Cow company - they also have other excellent options for road games on magnets with different age categories: chess, backgammon, football, sudoku, gallows.

Road magnetic game Noah's Ark Smart Games (price - 180 UAH) - perfectly develops children's brains. The essence of the game: the child must correctly place 10 animals in the ark. All flat animal figures are held on the tablet thanks to a magnet. Tasks for the game are cards fastened on a spring, which is why such a game is very convenient on the road. Parts of the same color must touch each other at least one of their sides. Animals must stand on the ground, do not turn them upside down. There is only 1 correct solution for each problem. The solution to all 48 puzzles is at the end of the booklet. It should be noted that this puzzle is recommended for children from 5 years old. But from the age of 4, you can complete tasks with your child. And with easy tasks, the baby can handle it himself - personally verified.

Sticker books according to age. A child can easily spend an hour doing this activity. We liked Djeco reusable stickers:

Note: pay attention to the French company djeco, they have a large number of board games. As for me, you can play from 4 - 5 years.

Doman Cards is an excellent solution for the little ones from 2 to 5 years old:

  1. Oral entertainment and games

Gadgets, drawing, games and toys become boring after a long journey. The child often needs to switch from one type of game to another. The smaller the child, the more frequent the switching. Therefore, all gadgets, as well as toys, are ideal to combine with communication, various oral entertainment.

Note: should start playing before the child gets bored and naughty. If he rages, it will be difficult to calm him down.

For example, they watched a cartoon, played an oral game, then drew, sang and ate: fruits, vegetables, nuts, straws.

Small snack: goji berries, raisins, nuts and dried apricots 😊

Then you can board games or toys and new oral entertainment. Such a distribution will help diversify the child's leisure time and allow parents to periodically relax and enjoy the road.

The advantage of oral games is that they do not take up space in the backpack and do not cause motion sickness. They can be played using improvised means. Their number is unlimited, you can always come up with something new, improvise.

Oral games on the road

Have a minimum basic supply of oral games so you know what to do with your kids on the road. To help you - our selection of 15 entertainment for different ages. You will have to choose those games that are more suitable for your children.

Let's count or whoever sees the red car is a wonderful game despite its simplicity. Its essence is to count everything that we see outside the window: cars of a certain color, poles, cows, goats, whatever. This game was first used impromptu on the road, when our child, out of boredom, began to use his mother as a Swedish wall. An easier option for children who still do not know how to count or do not want to find a car, a roof, a red house. You can search for any object of any color. The main thing is that it is interesting and exciting.

Game “Man” – for attention and reaction speed. The leader points to separate parts of his body with his hand, calls them correctly or incorrectly. If he called correctly, the child claps his hands once, if he made a mistake, he remains motionless. Instead of body parts, you can name objects around you. If the object is named correctly, we clap, if not, we are silent or laugh.

Guess which hand - develops intuition. The host puts an object in his hand: a small toy, a car, a marshmallow, in general - everything that fits in a fist and ask the child to close his eyes or hide his hands behind his back. We hide the object in the left or right hand and let the child guess in which hand. Then we change. Useful game for all family members.

patty or clapping is the most wonderful finger game for fine motor skills. The main thing in clapping is to say counting rhymes, for every word - clap. For example, we use this: “A crow flew, blurted out a word. Which? Any. Cow". The son likes to invent his own word - it turns out funny. And you can just clap each other on the hands for speed.

Guess is a question and answer game. One participant in the game guesses who he is by asking everyone questions. The answer is only "yes" or "no". The word for the riddle can be written and glued to the forehead of the guesser or verbally agreed. And you can guess the objects that are in the field of view of the child. The rules are the same: the participant asks leading questions about the characteristics of the object, and the answer is only “yes” or “no”.

Guess what's in the bag is a guessing game. For her, you will need a pouch, bag or opaque bag. Put a few items inside (vegetables, fruits, toys, etc.). Players take turns putting their hand into the bag and guessing by touch what the object is.

Let's sing songs – time on the road is fun and easy singing. Of course, such entertainment is more appropriate in your car than in a bus, plane or train. Sing your favorite acapello songs with your children, invent your own songs, turn on your favorite CDs and sing along to them. For example, in our family there is a hit song “Oh, there is no horse. Oh, there is no horse”😂

What has changed? - a game of attention. Lay out several items on the seat, album or book: a pencil, a donut, keys, in general - everything that is at hand. Players try to remember what these items are and their location. After the players have turned away, the facilitator swaps, removes or adds new items. The task is to find all the changes.

Associations is a game for all family members anytime, anywhere. The first player calls any word, the second says an association word, and so on. There is an interesting story at the end. For example, car - road - steering wheel - dad - mom - me - family.

I am packing a suitcase or a snowball – the game develops memory and attention. “I pack my suitcase,” you say, “and put in my toothbrush, socks, mirror.” Ask the child to repeat everything that you put in the suitcase. If the child remembered all the words, let him add something from himself. So the words grow like a snowball. If you practice often, you can repeat more than 20 words at a time.

Words - the rules are the same as for the familiar game of Cities. A new word begins with the letter that ends with the previous word. For example, a book - watermelon - winter. This game is also useful for children who have just started learning letters and sounds.

What will fit in a jar? is a complicated version of the Word game. We name the words under the same conditions as in a regular game, but we take into account the “capacity” in the jar. For example, the word "island" does not fit - it will not fit into a jar.

Tongue twisters – not without reason our great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers, being small, had fun with tongue twisters on long winter evenings. It turns out that this is a very fun activity and useful. Try it.

Drawing with a secret - develops imagination and creativity. You need a piece of paper and a pencil. The first player begins to draw or puts the first karlyuchka, the other continues. So we draw until the players see what is in the picture. It turns out very funny.

Molchanka – everyone gets tired on the road, sometimes you just want silence. And the energy of our children sometimes “is in full swing” in spite of everything. For such a case, there is a game of silence. Whoever spoke first, he lost.

As you can see, many travel games for children are widely known. At the heart of simplicity and proven effectiveness over the years. Sometimes even a simple clothespin and a deflated balloon work wonders - improvise. There is a “fallback” option - let the children offer you their games. They love it.

And another golden rule in our family - let the kids get bored. Yes, sometimes you have to endure whining and whining, but in the end you will be rewarded.
