Songs to learn the alphabet

Help Kids Learn Their ABCs With These Fun ABC Songs

Learning the alphabet can be super tricky, but using something as simple as ABC songs, alphabet songs, or an alphabet chant can make all the difference! These learning songs are some of the best songs for kids.

It is important for children to be able to learn letter sounds as well as to know how to recognize and identify letters. Letter knowledge and awareness play a key role in learning to read. Alphabet songs are not only fun, but they are also valuable resources that you can use to help children learn about letters. Learning through song provides the opportunity to experience letters in an entertaining way, while also keeping a fun and gradual pace to the learning process.

As a preschool teacher of 15 years, something that I also always try to have around is the alphabet at eye level for children. The best are the ones with the uppercase and lowercase letters and a visual to show the child what the letter sound starts with.

Now, on to the ABC songs that I wish I would have known ages ago! We’ve split them into four categories: Alphabet songs, songs that teach the letter sounds, alphabet songs with movement, and songs with ASL signs.

How to Stream Music in the Classroom or at Home

If you want to get songs without the ads from YouTube, there are a couple simple solutions. You can click the songs directly from this post, and it should take away most of the ads. Screen it first to make sure it works for your needs.

If you are using just audio, I have Amazon Music Unlimited. It isn’t free, but well worth it for me because we use it each day between the classroom and home. If you would want to download more than 10 songs a month, it’s worth its weight in gold!

It’s compatible with your phone, electronic devices, Alexa, and computer. What’s great is that I can download the songs while I’m home on my phone using wifi with the Amazon Music app. Then the songs are always there on my phone, and I can play them in the classroom, the car, or anywhere else.

There is also a 2 million song music library with Amazon Prime. That’s how I started, but then I eventually switched to Amazon Music Unlimited because it has nearly every song.

Alphabet Songs

Sing the Alphabet Song! by Sesame Street

We all know the excitement that Sesame Street can provide for children. When children like a certain character or group of characters, it can help encourage them to want to learn. This video is perfect for that. Who doesn’t like Big Bird and Elmo when learning the alphabet?

Usher’s ABC Song by Sesame Street

This is a fun and upbeat alphabet song! The song has two parts. One sang by Sesame Street characters and the other sang by Usher. The characters sing the letters themselves while Usher sings words that start with the letters. This helps with learning the letters as well as the beginning sounds.

Dinosaurs A to Z by PBS Kids

Dinosaur lovers are going to love this rendition of the alphabet from Dinosaur Train. The dinosaurs name a type of dinosaur that begins with every letter of the alphabet!

Alligators All Around by Carole King

This song is from Really Rosie, a musical that first aired in 1975. It makes learning the alphabet come alive with this catchy song.

The ABCs to Mary Had a Little Lamb by Alina Celeste

This is a great example of singing the traditional ABCs to a different tune. This can help children actually learn the letter order, not just the song itself. Plus it’s fun!

Songs that Teach Letter Sounds

Learning Letter Sounds by Jack Hartmann

This alphabet song is one that kids love to sing over and over again! Jack Hartmann has many alphabet songs, but this is probably our absolute favorite that works on letter recognition and letter sounds.

Alphabet Space by Bounce Patrol

Learn the ABCs in outer space! The fun friends of Bounce Patrol teach not only the letter names but their sounds as well, as they point out things that start with each letter. A great alphabet song as well as a preschool space song!

Alphabet Chant by BPSPathways-Bloomington Public Schools

This alphabet chant is a fun way for kids to hear the letter, hear the beginning sound, as well as see the example of the beginning sound. The three together will really help kids learn and know the ABCs and beginning sounds!

ABC Song by Little Baby Bum

I like this particular ABC song because it shows the letters bright, big and bold. This means that kids can see the colorful letters while hearing the sound as well as a word that starts with that letter. The combination is a perfect visual for kids to better understand and learn the beginning sounds!

Alphabet Songs with Movement

Phonercise by Dr. Jean

This song is a great example of combining music and movement! This can help kids get wiggles out while practicing phonics. This is especially helpful for students who need to learn through movement!

Phonics Song by Jack Hartmann

This video will help children learn letter sounds and practice letter recognition while exercising. This is a perfect indoor activity when kids need to get out the wiggles. This is also great for children for incorporating learning with movement!

Tell Me What Sounds Letters Make by Mister B

Turn learning the alphabet into a fun dance with this Reggae mix of the alphabet!

ABC Songs with Sign Language

If you’re teaching ASL in your class, these songs are perfect! Plus, we have this great ASL freebie you can grab too!

See It, Say It, Sign It by Jack Hartmann

This is a fun and easy way to practice the ABCs as well as learn the American Sign Language alphabet. This video shows the sign language letter, shows the written letter as well as speaks the letter sound. Learning sign language can not only help with the alphabet but can help build confidence and self-esteem.

Alphabet Chant by Super Simple Songs

This is great for combining American Sign Language and the alphabet! Learning a second language, including American Sign Language, is beneficial in so many ways.

English letters: spelling and pronunciation

English written symbols are borrowed from the ancient Latin language. In total, the alphabet contains 26 letters, 5 of which represent vowels, 20 are consonants, and a unique letter y can be both a vowel and a consonant in different words. Let's get acquainted with the pronunciation of letters, and a song about the English alphabet, which we will listen to in the second part of the lesson, will help to perfect it.

You may have noticed that many letters have similar endings. This greatly facilitates their memorization, since the entire alphabet is easily rhymed into verses that are suitable for both kids and adults. And if you put cheerful and perky music on them, you get a real song about the English alphabet. Over the years of the existence of the language, many such rhymes have been written by a variety of authors: eminent writers, school teachers who used this technique to effectively teach their class, as well as just lovers of the English language and craftsmen to write poems.
