A Spooktacular Halloween Scavenger Hunt
All growing up my parents set up fun little scavenger hunts for us where they’d write out silly rhyming clues that would send us from one place to another on our way to the “grand prize.”
They did it for Christmas one year all over the neighborhood and all sorts of other times when they wanted the gifts to be a little more special.
I thought it would be fun to create this fun Halloween scavenger hunt that you can either play with your kids on Halloween along with some of these Halloween games or play with a bunch of kids at a Halloween party.
Plus, it’s one of the most fun and safe Halloween activities this year!
I kept the clues as universal as possible so that you can just print out the clues, hide them around the house, and be on your spooky way.
If you’re looking for more of a find all these things on this list scavenger hunt, I’ve got two of those in this Halloween neighborhood scavenger hunt post. Plus a Halloween themed group text scavenger hunt!
How to Set Up a Halloween Scavenger Hunt
If you’ve never participated in a scavenger hunt, they are a lot of fun and are really easy to set up!
To get started, print out the clue cards and location cheat sheet. Cut them up and put them in order using the numbers on the cards. Now the fun begins.
Hide all of the clues (except for #1) in the location that is immediately before the place the clue leads to.
I know that sounds confusing, so I’ve made it easy for you by creating a cheat sheet that tells you exactly where to hide which cards.
Once you’ve hidden all of the cards, give the kids the first clue. They’ll read that clue and go in search of the next one.
And so on until they’ve found their fun surprise at the end.
If you want to make it even more fun, you can include little surprises along the way with random clues.
Halloween Scavenger Hunt Prize Ideas
One of the best parts of scavenger hunts, whether it be a Christmas scavenger hunt or 4th of July hunt is the prize at the end! I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite scavenger hunt prizes for kids and a couple that are good options for teens as well!
These prizes would work well if you wanted to play this Halloween bingo game too!
I know that some people might think to just do candy but with so many people with allergies – I think it’d be great to stay away from candy or at least offer an alternative, kind of like the teal pumpkin project for trick or treating!
If none of these work, you could always give out any of these Halloween party favors or make a fun Halloween snack board like this one!

Hunting magazine: Main page
The first half of 2022 was marked by bright events that had a strong impact on the arms market. Imported weapons and ammunition disappeared or became extremely expensive, Russian-made cartridges and components became scarce and more expensive. New amendments to the law "On Weapons" came into force, essentially destroying the popular and commercially successful niche of "Lancasters" and "paradoxes". As a result, the relevance of smooth-bore weapons for animal hunting has returned. This is what we will talk about today.
Everything returns to normal
I must admit that all these years we, hunters and shooters, lived well. There were many imported weapons and ammunition available. Many hunters could afford to shoot foreign cartridges from Saiga-308, Tigers and other utilitarian weapons while hunting. The direction of high-precision shooting developed rapidly. The industry of self-loading cartridges for rifled weapons began to gain momentum, since the market had everything necessary for this. And all this hunting well-being was shaken.
During the hunts in the North, I often used a shotgun
We will not get into politics. We are interested in the consequences of global changes, which will once again inevitably affect animal hunting. We are concerned not only with prices, but also with the effectiveness of weapons available and relevant in the light of current events.
The scarcity and terrible high cost of imported hunting cartridges and accessories, the ban on "semi-rifled" calibers for "smooth" licenses, and the introduction of a two-year experience with a single-barreled or double-barreled gun for beginners - all this has already caused an increase in interest in shotgun shooting. Well, we're not used to it. But it is necessary to assess the realities sensibly. We will start with them.
One of the best shotguns - "Lynx-U" 12-gauge. Valued as a bullet and in Canada
What's the price
Back in late 2021, we were pleased with the abundance of 12-gauge bullet cartridges and the relatively affordable prices for these ammunition. It was easy to buy a high-quality bullet cartridge for 50-70 rubles.
Today it is July 2022, we are surfing the Internet and looking at prices for 12-gauge bullet cartridges. However! Glavpatron, bullet Gualandi 32 g - 136 rubles, Tekhkrim, bullet UNO 35E - 95, "Tekhkrim" with a bullet "Legend P-6E" - 100, "Tekhkrim" with a bullet "Leningradka L-2" - 104 rubles, etc. Simply put, the price of bullet cartridges of domestic production revolves around 100 rubles apiece . There is no import at all, and the prices there will be completely out of touch with reality.
A budget electric crucible with a scoop does not allow bullets to be poured under pressure, and floating debris can get into the casting
Frankly, for serious hunting, 100 rubles for a good cartridge is not cheap. It is unlikely that you will fire more than 3-5 shots at an animal, more often the entire ammunition load is shot at cans at the end of a hunt or a season. At the current price of an animal license, it is unlikely that you will scare any of the city hunters with a "hundredth" for a cartridge.
But for a shooter-athlete or a constantly hunting rural hunter, 100 rubles per shot is prohibitively expensive, simply not affordable. There is only one way out - "self-roll", and this is a completely different story.
The vertical crucible will allow you to cast bullets under pressure and without debris: it remains on the surface of the melt
The economy of "self-roll"
We already talked about this in 2021, but then everything was different, and we somehow skipped about bullet cartridges. Therefore, it is the self-equipment of bullets that we will pay close attention today, since there are many complex nuances here.
Let's start with the methodology. If we are talking about "self-rolling", then we need tools. You need a press or a set of classic tools with a good twist at the head. Both options cost about 15 thousand rubles in money, but this should be enough for a long time, in theory - for the whole life of a hunter.
In this form, bullet cartridges can already be used in "breaks". The sleeve is not twisted, but this does not affect the muzzle velocity, and accuracy may improve
With consumables for assembling a bullet cartridge, everything is much more complicated. The main ambush is the lack of gunpowder. It has already reached the point that the price of 1 kg of shot-shot "Irbis" reaches 7-8 thousand rubles, and a can of homespun "Falcon" - up to 1.5 thousand rubles. As a result, only a load of charge pulls almost 20 rubles.
It should be taken into account that in some regions gunpowder is not sold at all, including in my native Krasnodar Territory with a population of 5.5 million. Hunters are forced to go for gunpowder to neighboring regions, which noticeably increases its price.
The encapsulated Fiocchi 12 x 70 cartridge case can still be found in stores for 45-50 rubles, domestic non-encapsulated cartridge cases are traded at an average of 10-20 rubles. There are almost no capsules in stores, and where they are, the price for KV-209 is about 9 rubles apiece, Zhevelo - 10, KV-22 - up to 7, Centroboy - 5 rubles. You can buy capsules cheaper on the forums. For a circle, a new encapsulated plastic domestic sleeve will cost about 15-25 rubles. Let me remind you that quite recently for this money you could buy a full-fledged shotgun cartridge.
Bullets designed by Kontarev: heavy, accurate, easy to load and affordable
Now the most important thing - bullets. This is both difficult and simple at the same time. The main thing is that 12 gauge bullets are not in short supply. There are all kinds of bullets on sale: cast by craftsmen in the garage, factory “stampings”, of any design, high-quality and not very good, for any wallet, taste and color. The price of one 12 gauge bullet is from 20 to 60 rubles. The market offers an abundance of bullet guns, crucibles, lead ingots, a variety of plastic shanks and a lot of ways to buy all this with delivery via the Internet.
The famous "Leningradka". Very accurate bullet, but light
The topic of "self-rolling" entails not only the need to understand the subject, the availability of experience and a serious material and technical base, but also the expenditure of time. The question is raised not only in the plane of "what, how and where", here the sacramental "when" is much more important. For "self-roll" is not just a couple of boxes with "dowry", but also a special philosophy of thinking, directly tied to the availability of free time.
But if hunting and preparing for it are more than beautiful words for you, if you consider hunting or sports shooting from a gun a part of your worldview or lifestyle, then all the subtleties of self-equipment of bullet cartridges for a shotgun will definitely not scare you. It doesn't scare anyone at all.
The hole in the bucket is the result of two shots from the Izh 54 double-barreled shotgun at a distance of 35 meters. Sufficient accuracy for game hunting
Process
We spoke in detail about tools for a 12-gauge "self-roll" in one of the previous issues of the HUNTING magazine. It is possible to assemble a sufficiently high-quality bullet cartridge for a shotgun using primitive equipment: all you need is a manual twist, a measure for gunpowder, a pin for knocking out spent primers, a barclay, a lashing and a hammer. When loading a bullet cartridge for double-barreled shotguns, you can even do without a twist or "star".
Bullet UNO-40. Caliber, arrow bullet of the "Brenneke" type. Heavy but accurate
But all these simplifications are not our method. At least for most of our hunters. We like everything to be beautiful, solid, tasteful, sensible and arranged. And this approach requires financial investments in equipment. Here it is difficult to determine the upper limit of the amount of the final investment, the result of which will be a beautiful and, undoubtedly, high-quality shot or bullet cartridge for a 12-gauge gun.
12-gauge chiseled steel bullets require a secure plastic case. A good option, but they are expensive and sometimes ricochet
Now various models of lever presses are in use, there are various modern twists and many options for UPS. Prices, weight and size parameters and the degree of ease of use of such products vary greatly. What to choose is up to you, this question lies more in the plane of habit or personal ideas about beauty.
It takes about 3-5 minutes to assemble one bullet cartridge, and this includes decapsulation and crimping of the bottom of the spent cartridge case, weighing the powder on the scales and carefully installing the bullet. Much more time is spent on preparing and cleaning the workplace, not to mention the efforts and resources spent on acquiring and delivering the necessary tools and consumables.
From a rational point of view, it’s easier to go and buy ready-made cartridges in the store, since you need a pack of them for the season. The only question is whether the real characteristics of these ammunition will suit you.
Cores for casting bullets "Hurricane" of the Shirinsky-Shikhmatov type, options with bullet segmentation into 4 and 6 petals
Finished 12 gauge bullets
There is a large selection here. You can buy a bullet for any task - from the lightest for "shooting" to 40-gram, for a large dangerous beast. You can buy bullets both from single craftsmen and factories or their dealers.
We will not dwell on prices in detail, anyone can find out from open sources on the Internet. You need to focus on numbers from 12-15 to 60-70 rubles per bullet, depending on its manufacturer and design. On average, a good option for hunting can be bought for 20 rubles apiece. Plus shipping.
We add here the cost of a Sokol hitch, a primer, an almost gratuitous used cartridge case and we get (depending on the price of gunpowder) about 30–35 rubles per round for a finished cartridge. If you have an old stash of gunpowder, then the price tag will be correspondingly lower.
Bullet guns are often equipped with collimators, as well as "drivers" (as in the photo) and night sights
Bullets
Not so long ago, the word "bullet gun" was strongly associated with the products of the American companies Lee and Lyman. They produced solid products, but bourgeois products are not nice to us now, and they don’t need anything. Now this niche is almost completely replaced and is firmly occupied by the bullet guns of the Russian company AS‑company. The choice is huge. For the 12-gauge alone, these Chelyabinsk guys make 11 models of bullets, many of the latter with cores for different bullet weights. There are other manufacturers, including copying AS bullet guns, but I have not come across their products.
Bullet gun AS, for 12-caliber bullets of the Shirinsky-Shikhmatov type with a different number of segments
The price of one AS bullet gun is from 2650 to 3500 rubles. In my opinion, quite affordable. The logic of counting here is simple: a bullet gun for 3000 rubles “fights back” in just 50, maximum 100 shots with self-assembled cartridges that use bullets from free or cheap lead. Note that the price of 12-gauge Lee bullet guns is 2 times higher, while the materials and workmanship of imported bullet guns are noticeably lower.
Many people are interested in the minimum price of a bullet shot when using a bullet gun and free lead. Here, a lot depends on whether you have old stocks of gunpowder and primers, which is by no means uncommon. If there is, then you're in luck.
The design of the injection mold of the AS bullet for the Kontarev bullet
We believe: the bullet gets free (we won’t spread the price of the watering can at the cost of the bullet), gunpowder and primer from the stash, there are no problems with gratuitous shells either. If the design of the bullet involves the use of a plastic wad-container, then this is literally a couple of rubles. As a result, the price of a shot is practically reduced to zero, well, a maximum of 3–5 rubles.
If some components were not in the pantry, we add to the price of the shot the cost of the missing one from the above list. As you can see, there are quite a lot of these “ifs”, so specific numbers are an individual matter.

Conclusion
I've always liked passionate people. Today, by the will of fate, there are more such people. Of course, all this is more of a temporary phenomenon than a long-term trend. Import substitution is slowly working, people are adapting to new realities, relative normalization is only a matter of time.
It is clear that no one likes or wants to wait. But here we must remember the experience of our fathers and grandfathers, and also understand that something good cannot last too long. This is an objective reality. Here it is rather necessary to pray that it does not get worse, because then there will definitely not be time for hunting and recreational shooting. But these are extremes. Let's hope for the best and spin the cartridges.
We will also wait for a decrease in prices for components, hope for the conscience of manufacturers and sellers. But objectively, one must understand that there will be no sharp rollback to the previous level. My pessimistic forecast is that prices for many positions will not fall. Most likely, they will grow, taking into account changes in legislation and the inevitable consequences. The market has already sunk, and its destruction is a matter of the near future, it is hardly more than 1–3 years.
It remains to put Kontarev's bullet on a plastic wad and install the resulting projectile into the sleeve
Only radical measures in the form of competent legislative initiatives and bringing them to the next amendments can level the situation, but this is unlikely. Therefore, you need to look for free or cheap lead, buy bullet guns, stock up on gunpowder, capsules and high-quality factory cartridges. Collect plastic shells after shooting - they last at least 3-5 shots.
Bullets "Hurricane" of the Shirinsky-Shikhmatov type and wad tails. They need to be screwed on. This makes the process a little more difficult.
Someone will remember the past and switch from rifled weapons to 12-gauge. Or maybe on the 16th or 20th. For some, nothing will change at all. Some hunters will become seriously interested in hunting an animal with a shotgun and will rediscover the works of Buturlin, Steingold, Blum and Shishkin. There are also many practical benefits here, at least take the ability to approach the animal at a distance of 30–40 meters, that is, a confident shot from a gun.
Therefore, there is a blessing in disguise, although this will certainly be a controversial statement.
