Huge in England, this British synth-rock quartet rose from the ashes of the legendary post-punk band Joy Division. “Blue Monday,” released in 1983, is one of the most influential tunes in British pop. Instantly identifiable by its opening drum pattern and the signature hook that weaves in and out of the song, it remains the best-selling 12” single of all time and a guaranteed dance-floor filler to this day.

Cult favorites Husker Du helped invent the rough—but melodic—sound today celebrated as indie rock way back in the early 1980s. The trio was one of the first to marry the pop melodies of the 1960s to the hardcore punk sound of the 1980s. This song, featured on their ground-breaking Zen Arcade album, is a loud, brash but beautiful song about a love affair—that ends in a drug overdose. Lyrically grim, yet somehow musically uplifting.

This 1988 single heralded the arrival of Georgia college-rock favorites to the big leagues. A soaring anthem and an American number one hit, the song contains cryptic lyrical references to the Agent Orange defoliant used extensively in the Vietnam War. This lush ballad helped to break the Moodies in America, and to many remains their signature song. What many don’t realize is that it first appeared as the climax to the group’s orchestral pop masterpiece Days of Future Passed in 1967. Released as a single then, it was a moderate hit in England and pretty much a flop in America. By 1972, DJs had been playing it for years on FM radio, and upon its reissue, this time shot it up the American charts, peaking at the top.

This country rocker was Elvis Presley’s last hit in the U.S, with a decent showing in the top 40. Some critics feel that the King’s last recorded output lacks the power of his best work, but “Moody Blue” proves that Elvis could deliver the goods even at the very end. Fun fact: songwriter Mark James also penned Elvis’ worldwide smash “Suspicious Minds.”

From 1971’s classic Who’s Next, this rocker is one of the band’s most famous tunes and has seldom not been featured in their live performances. This personality study was written by songwriter and guitarist Pete Townshend about a character that he planned to include in an earlier project, a rock opera called Lifehouse. He has said that he wanted to create a portrait of a villain that you could empathize with. The band’s performance on this song captures the Who at their playing best—in particular, the relatively restrained drumming of Keith Moon that drives the song throughout.

This 1987 hit single for The Dead was something of a gift and a curse. A cheerfully upbeat ode to growing older with a delicious hook in its chorus (“I will get by”), this was the first—and only—bona-fide hit single the band ever enjoyed. Long a touring act with one of the most loyal fan bases in rock history, this hit’s success led to a new generation of fans discovering the joys of the Dead’s music and lifestyle. It also led to a greater awareness that their fame was becoming unmanageable. Nonetheless, most Deadheads still love this song.

OTYKEN consists of representatives of small peoples of Siberia: Chulyms, Kets, Selkups. Their clips are getting millions of views on YouTube and even more on TikTok. The group was born in Krasnoyarsk, but its roots literally go back to the remote taiga. Musicians come from places where there is no electricity and pharmacies, where you still have to live on your own farm. We tell how Siberian VIA Gra achieved popularity.

The team is already 5 years old. Initially, the request for performances by indigenous musicians with their authentic instruments was from tourists, says the group's producer Andrey Medonos (in addition to creativity and honey trade, he runs the Museum of Ethnography). Thus the idea to create OTYKEN was born.

— Tourists come to me, foreign tourists, our Russian tourists. We started asking if there are any options, I want to see how they play, music, throat singing. I am from the village, Tyukhtetsky district, Krasnoyarsk Territory. Taiga. There are Kets, Selkups, Chulyms. I take from there, I bring two girls, they just play. They have no musical education, they have nothing, they play, sing, homemade instruments, - Andrey Medonos recalls.

Indians from North and South America became interested in Siberian ethnic music. Including from Canada and Colombia. According to Andrei, they were looking for cultural parallels between their peoples and the indigenous people of Siberia. The team began to move into the status of a professional. The selection of the composition was approached in the same way - based on how the artists will look on stage.

- To be beautiful, tall, thick, black hair. The skin is so brown, swarthy, smooth. Well, to have musical abilities too. Moreover, the Siberian indigenous peoples are very musical, - says the group's producer Andrey Medonos.

Khakaida plays drums, helps translate lyrics from Russian into Chulym

Share

Their style is a combination of different genres with an ethnic sound. This is the so-called World Music. The producer composes music with one of the band members. He writes the texts himself. Tracks are released in Chulym, Khakass and Russian. There are just over 300 native speakers of the Chulym language left in the country.

- There are several options for how to write them. I have Hakaida (a member of the group), I dictate to her in Russian, she writes. Sometimes I even write in Khakass. It depends on how quickly you need to write a song. The song Storm took 15 minutes to write. I myself am not a musician, I don’t know any notes, I don’t know how to play any instrument, - says the group’s producer Andrey Medonos.

Next year the band will go to a music festival in the USA. Plans to participate in several shows. True, while the political situation interferes.

— We have contracts: the Grammy Academy, the American Talent Show also signed a contract with us. There is an interesting point that the contracts were concluded, we were invited, but they cannot bring this into action. The American government forbade us to come to them, - Andrey Medonos complains.

Members of the band make some instruments with their own hands

Share

Members of the band play both authentic and rare instruments - jew's harp, ikili, khomys - as well as drums and bass guitar. They use throat singing and recitative.

Now OTYKEN's music is played at European parties. Mixed tracks are being played by Jaydee, a Dutch producer and DJ who collaborates with Armin van Buuren.

— We have a lot of world DJs working with us. We send tracks to them, they make remixes. They play at European, American, Hindu festivals, discos, - says the group's producer Andrey Medonos.

Most of the band members come from remote taiga villages. They still live in the traditional way. It was preserved due to the fact that civilization for the most part bypassed these places.

— There are the most ordinary conditions in the countryside, without drugs, pharmacies. We ourselves are treated with our economic production, honey. Not even light. I fished, took care of the household, I know how to milk cows, chop wood, - says Tsveta, a member of the group who plays the harp.

One of the instruments is a jew's harp. The first copies appeared in Asia before our era. Tsveta plays on the jew's harp

Share

Tsveta in the group from the very beginning. Although now the girl is a professional artist, in the summer, like many others, she returns to her native places, to the taiga. Therefore, in the summer, concert activity usually comes to naught.

Most of the costumes are made by the artists themselves. Some instruments are also made by hand

Share

The artists sew the costumes themselves. Visually, these are traditional indigenous outfits. In appearance, the attributes of several Siberian tribes are presented at once. As for the tools, they are also partly made by ourselves, something has to be ordered. There is even a flute made of human bones.

— Our most unusual and interesting instrument is the morin khur with a horse skull. We also have tools made of bones: maracas, horns,” Tsveta lists.

Bones, including human bones, have been used as musical instruments since ancient times

Share

The name OTYKEN (read as OTUKEN) was chosen to make it easier for foreigners to perceive. The word is translated as “a sacred place of power; the place where the soldiers laid down their weapons.

The band shoots its clips in the forest, on a frozen river, on the tops of mountains. Locations correspond to the image and lyrics. Despite the language barrier, the so-called vibe and atmosphere is still transmitted to the audience.

— I want to convey all these burning emotions to people, you can always feel the energy of the hall. I saw that many people show their emotions in a very sentimental way, sometimes it comes to tears,” says Hakaida, a member of the group who plays drums.

Producer OTYKEN compares his group with the female musical group "VIA Gra"

Share

Producer of the group calls it "Siberian Viagra". But the girls take the audience far from sexual images and erotic overtones.

- I mean by popularity. Most likely, VIA Gra is losing to us - in the international aspect it is losing. Still, she won the hearts of Russia more, and we in the world win the hearts of our listeners. I see foreigners crying. They have not seen such purity, such sincerity of performance, such unspoiltness, - says the group's producer Andrey Medonos.

The group's producer Andrey Medonos composes music, lyrics and helps to sew costumes

OTYKEN is currently recording a new album. On the 20th of October, the group will perform in one of the Krasnoyarsk clubs.

The Lucerne Festival brings together all colors and sings about a new European identity

Baroque and ethnic musicians united in Jordi Saval's Ensemble / Peter Fischi / Lucerne Festival

The Mozartplatz was bustling with crowds. From different directions came the sounds of music: ethnic ensembles played it, gathering around a crowd of curious passers-by. Guttural singing and dancing, unusual timbres and incendiary rhythms merged into a multi-voiced rumble.

This was a special day in the program of the Lucerne Festival. It was called "Day of Special Events" - Special Event Day. Sila (The Breath of the World, op. 2013) was already sung and played early in the morning right on the square - it was the European premiere of John Adams' opera, the title of which uses the concept in Alaska Indian culture, meaning the life-giving breath that created the world.

And now a street festival of ethnic music was singing and dancing around the modern building of the Congress Center; it continued in the city for a whole week, and this was its final, culminating day. Turks and Arabs, Japanese and Chinese, various Balkan ensembles, replacing each other, competed for the attention of the public walking along the esplanade on a fine day.

Meanwhile, inside, in the concert hall of the Congress Center, there was a concert by Jordi Saval and his two bands: the ensemble Hesperion XXI and four vocalists from La Capella Reial de Catalunya. The sound of baroque instruments and voices was set off by the hoarse timbre of the folk singer Kasse Madi Diabate, whose intricate vocalizations, abundantly equipped with clusters of melismas, clearly indicated that Malian music belonged to the great monodic tradition that covered a good half of the globe in the Middle Ages. Kasse's singing was supported by a virtuoso accompaniment of the Moroccan oud, the Madagascar waliha (stringed plucked instrument), the Malian kora (a cross between a harp and a lute) and playful dancers of graceful girls.

A change of eras

The two most important institutions that emerged and became stronger thanks to the initiative of Michael Haefliger, the permanent intendant of the Lucerne Festival, are the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, founded by Claudio Abbado, and the orchestra of the Lucerne Youth Academy, led until his death by Pierre Boulez. Now the Academy is headed by the venerable German composer Wolfgang Rihm; Abbado's successor at the festival orchestra was Riccardo Chailly.

Jordi Savall presented in Lucerne his new project "The Ways of Slavery", dedicated to the study of the mutual influences of the musical cultures of Africa, Europe and America, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Using specific musical examples, he demonstrated how the musical culture of slaves taken from Africa to Portugal, Spain and Latin America influenced melos, rhythm and the emergence of new genres of slave owners' culture. And he clearly showed how the gradual emancipation of black America and the assertion of the primary human rights and freedoms proclaimed by the French Revolution changed the balance of cultural forces in Europe and America.

All together - events taking place out door and in door - worked to reveal the general idea and motto of the current festival: Identity ("Identity").

Needless to say, why Europeans are so concerned about identity issues right now: they are inextricably linked with the problem of refugees, their adaptation to European realities and the problem of incorporating alien local cultures into the common European cultural code. Exactly the same problems were raised this summer at the Salzburg Festival, in a good half of the productions of which the theme of refugees was interpreted in one way or another, and more broadly - various aspects of the philosophical dilemma “friend or foe”.

However, ethnic and quasi-ethnic music does not exhaust the content of the truly comprehensive program of the Lucerne Festival, where venerable academic music coexists with the experimental work of contemporary composers. In the Great Hall of the Congress Center, symphonic music is performed every evening by the world's best orchestras. Master classes are held in the neighboring Lucerne Hall in the morning, and concerts with unique programs are held in the afternoon, evening and night. The festival in Lucerne continues until the end of the first decade of September. Ahead is a tour of the Concertgebouw orchestras, the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra de Paris and the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra with Valery Gergiev.
