Authority Figure Activities for Kindergarten

Learning about authority figures can help kindergarten students to better understand how the rules of society work. Bringing lessons about these people to the student's level and making them meaningful can help the kindergartner to get a grip on the content and enjoy the learning process. You can connect the concept of authority with people who your students see often, such as the principal or police officers.

1 Finding Figures

Young students may not know -- or may not realize that they know -- where to find authority figures. Ask the students something such as, "Where do you think we could find an authority figure?" or get specific and pick one figure to ask about. Doing so will help the kindergartners to connect the person with the job that they do. For example, the principal works at the school. The children may know that they can find some authority figures at multiple places. A police officer works at the police station, but may direct traffic or keep the peace at a town parade. Put up a map of the town or make your own with illustrated landmarks such as the school and fire station. Have the kindergarten students point to or put stickers on the places where each figure is found.

2 Pretend Play

Role play and pretend play are more than just fun-time activities for the young child. Engaging in pretend play activities allows kids to problem-solve, use their language skills and learn through imitation, according to the article "The Importance of Pretend Play" on the Scholastic Parents website. Ask each student to play an authority figure and act out a scenario. Provide your students with costumes or props. This gives your kindergarten class the chance to identify and show that they know who authority figures are and what they do.

3 In-Class Field Trip

If your class doesn't have the time, or you don't have the budget, to take the students on a field trip to the fire station or police facility bring the authority figures into the classroom. Invite the local authority figures to come in and talk to your students about what they do on a daily basis and why it's important to follow their instructions. You can also include familiar faces such as the school counselor or principal along with outside authority experts.

4 Bring the Learning Home

Authority figures aren't just paid employees -- such as the police or the principal. Parents are also authority figures that kindergartners have to follow. Give the students a list of questions to ask their parents about how the family creates rules and who is in charge of enforcing them. This will help your young students to better understand how rules are made. After the kindergartners complete their parent interviews, have them present the information to you in the form of a drawing that illustrates what the words say.

Parental state

According to the ideas of analysis, each person in the first years of his life imprinted in the psyche the external authoritative figures of his environment. First of all, these are parents, grandparents, educators, images from fairy tales, cartoons and much more, depending on the experience of the child. Growing up, he acquires knowledge about morality and ethics, cultural, religious and national values. A special place is occupied by authoritarian figures of leaders and idols. And when these idols were later toppled from their pedestals, gaping voids were left in our minds in their places. So, this component of the psyche, made up of external influences, is called the Parental state, or simply the Parent.

The parental state is an external, authoritarian reality of a person's childhood, imprinted in the psyche. Its main functions are to preserve traditions and preserve the experience of previous generations. It is the guardian of ethical norms, morality. These are alien, external values, accepted voluntarily or under the pressure of upbringing, or out of love for parents. A person can internalize these values, "digest and assimilate" and use them as his own all his life. Or he can suffer, fearing punishment from figures significant in childhood who have long lost their power. Or he can follow these values ​​out of love, performing feats against himself and erecting monuments of love to former idols.

The parent state is responsible for automatic decisions and actions when there is no need or no time to think. This state has opinions and solutions for all occasions. The certainty of the Parental state calms the person. A well-formed Parenthood allows you to act effectively as parents to your children. This state carries parental instincts. It's easy enough to recognize.

The facial and pantomimic signs of the Parent are characteristic, that is, his facial expressions and gestures. Typical manifestations are a frowning forehead, pursed lips, shaking the head, pointing finger, arms folded on the chest, on the hips, wringing the hands. In addition, there are many other manifestations characteristic of specific people. Typical facial expressions and characteristic gestures accumulate in families and are passed down from generation to generation.

However, the parental state is characterized not only by facial expressions. He also has typical verbal turns. They often contain categorical judgments "always", "never", "for nothing in the world." Many judging words speak of the Parental state of a person. Such as "stupid", "capricious", "absurd", "disgusting".

Parent's typical orders contain such statements as "must", "must", "must". Or, more gently, advice “I would be in your place”, “it’s better to do this here ...” and many others.

The use of proverbs and sayings is also a characteristic manifestation of the Parental state. He often simply does not need to think - you can use ready-made proverbs and sayings. They have been accumulated by the folk wisdom of several generations for all occasions. But the life of these generations was completely different. However, the parental state is not particularly worried.

Prohibitions and permissions are very powerful parental messages. In traditional education, there are a great many prohibitions, but there are very few permissions.

There are two main parental influences on a person. Direct influence is carried out under the motto "Do as I do!". And indirect influence, which is realized under the motto "Do not as I do, but as I command you to do!".

The parent state tends to dominate and suppress other states. After all, it carries the wisdom of generations and therefore believes that it knows everything. The less developed a person's personality, the more he succeeds. And if we imagine that the Parental state completely fills the entire psyche, completely suppressing other states, then such a person will differ in the following.

This is a stern, constantly tense person, strict towards himself and those around him. He always lives and will live according to strictly established rules, carefully observe traditions and moral norms. Will strive to control everything and everywhere. Everything new will be perceived suspiciously, incredulously and even hostilely. Most often, he will not perceive the new at all.

Such a person adapts well to a traditional society and is completely helpless in an era of change. These people wish each other: "God forbid you live in an era of change!". This ancient Chinese proverb is especially loved by them.

The most common variant of their adaptation is an attempt to stay in the old, stable society, creating a special niche for themselves. And even if it is more and more difficult to keep in the past, and even if more and more efforts are needed to maintain what has been achieved - they go to all costs, overcome all obstacles.

Such a person often does not understand, and even more often simply refuses to understand, that much has already changed around him. There are many possibilities, and they live in the old reality. They make every effort to adapt the world to themselves, rather even to their illusions. Such a person acquires the Parental quality of life.

It is important to analyze all circumstances before deciding to take such a person beyond the reality of his dominant Parent state.

Parental state is very heterogeneous. It consists of a number of dominant, authoritative childhood figures. I must say that for people who were brought up by grandparents, the information in the Parental state is especially outdated. And such people, as a rule, find it very difficult to adapt in society.

It is important to note that when a person learns to listen to his Parental state, he can hear many different voices, recognize those people to whom they belonged. And their conversations are not always peaceful. To hear these voices, to analyze the content of their conversations means to understand a lot in the structure and principles of work of one's Parental state, and indeed of one's entire personality. Maybe even solve some of your problems and free your inner world from voices constantly repeating maxims that have long lost their meaning, and maybe never had it.

In those conditions when the Parental state is completely blocked and does not function, a person is deprived of ethics, moral foundations and principles, parental instinct.

Such a person no longer turns to the wisdom accumulated over the centuries. He lives by indulging his desires. Can actively use the newly received information. In changing conditions, he creates an ethics and morality adapted to them, each time updated. The literature indicates that such people can take place as well-known political figures or mafia leaders.
