INTRODUCTION
If you’re reading this book, you are undoubtedly the proud parent of dog children.
It’s not that you treat your dogs like children—they are your children, just as much as any human youngsters who may or may not live in your house, ruin your furniture, and run up your food bill.
And, as parents of dog children, you’re probably pretty fed up with the way your kids are discriminated against—they can’t eat in restaurants, aren’t allowed in the grocery store without a service dog vest, can’t even sit quietly and watch a movie. For me, the worst was when I realized there were no bedtime stories for my babies. I was outraged! We all know how important reading is to kids. How can I expect my babies to grow up and get jobs when all they have for entertainment are reruns of Scooby Doo?
As I was writing this book, I kept several things in mind. Like the fact that dogs:
• prefer things short and simple (their lives are complicated enough)
• like happy endings
• prefer stories that involve food
• are really smart and enjoy stories that require them to exercise their superior intellect
• have excellent senses of humor
• like things that smell really awful.
Well, except for the latter, I have tried to make sure that Bedtime Stories for Dogs meets these criteria. Every one of these stories was proofed (and woofed) by my three wiener dogs. If they didn’t give a story six paws up and three tails wagging, it was back to the drawing board.
Bedtime Stories for Dogs is for you if:
• Your dog has his or her own sleep number on the bed.
• Your hound has control of the remote (and flips through watching dog-food commercials).
• Your last vacation was a tour of the great fire hydrants of Europe.
• Your dog has his/her own wardrobe, which rivals anything you have in the closet (and the jewelry, oh, the jewelry!).
• You carry your dog when he/she gets winded.
• You don’t even notice the dog hairs in your food.
• Your dog has health- and life-insurance policies (Dogressive).
• You fill the toilet bowl with flavored vitamin water.
• You have a special shelf in the bathroom for doggie toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, bath oil, canine hygiene products .
. .).
• Your dog’s Twitter account has more followers than yours.
So, sit back and relax. Get a bowl of water and some organic, free-range, gluten-free, peanut butter treats. And enjoy!

Fairy tale The learned dog, Czech folk tale
Once upon a time there was a village rich man.
He could neither write nor read, but he considered himself the first person in the village. For greed and evil character, fellow villagers disliked him. The rich man had a beloved dog Azor. Often he used to say to his farmhand Martyn:
- You know, Martyn, this dog is smarter than you: he understands everything, but he just can't speak. If there were schools for dogs, I would spare no expense to teach my dog to speak. nine0003
And Martyn turned out to be a proud guy. It was bitter for him that the owner only knew that he would regale him with insulting words, and keep him hungry - if only he would not stretch out his legs. He endured, endured until he could not stand it, and decided to get even with the owner.
- Don't you know that there are schools for dogs? he once asked the owner.
- What nonsense! the rich man interrupted him angrily.
– Not at all nonsense, master. Recently, my old friend the forester told me that there is a school where smart dogs are taught to speak and tell everything they see and hear.

– Wonderful! the owner rejoiced. – Do you know where this school is?
– The forester said that this school is far beyond our forest and mountain, and the road there costs twenty crowns.
– Well, twenty, so twenty! Take Azor tomorrow and take him to school.
“All right, they charge a hundred crowns for education alone,” the laborer remarked.
- Oh, no matter what! I will not be poor without a hundred crowns! The rich man waved his hand.
Wait a minute, thought Martyn, I'll teach you a lesson. You haven’t paid me for my work for a year, but you don’t spare money for such stupidity. nine0003
The next day the owner counted out one hundred and twenty crowns to the laborer, gave him a piece of bread and a pinch of salt for the journey, and a large ham for the dog.
Martyn Azora led into the forest to the forester, who was his godfather. They sat down at the table, drank, ate, and ate the whole ham, and threw a bone to the dog. The forester laughed for a long time when he learned what business had brought the farmhand to him.
“Leave the dog with me,” he suggested. - There is no living soul here, no one will know anything.
Martyn stayed with his godfather for three days, and on the fourth he returned to the village. His owner asked him how the dog behaves at school. nine0003
- It's a pity you didn't come with me, master! - answered the farmhand. - Before we entered the classroom, Azorka sat down at the desk and pricked up his ears. The teacher liked the dog and said he would teach it for a whole year. I paid him a hundred crowns for his education, and when I come for Azorka, I will have to pay another hundred.
“And I won’t regret five hundred, if only my dog spoke,” exclaimed the rich man. “And then beware, lazybones!” Azorka will report to me what you are doing and what you are talking about. And as soon as I go outside with him, the whole village will gather to stare and marvel at such a miracle. nine0003
Not even half a year has passed, and the owner Martin sent to visit Azor, to inquire about his progress.
He gave the laborer money for the journey, a piece of bread and a pinch of salt, and sent a gift to the dog - a large smoked ham.
And again Martyn went to his godfather. They ate a ham, helped Martyn's godfather mow hay, and on the fourth day he returned home.
The owner first of all asked him if Azorka was healthy, if she studied diligently.
- Healthy, healthy, master. An exemplary student of Azorka, is rapidly moving forward and is already reading in syllables. The teacher praised him and said that Azorka would soon begin to speak. nine0003
A year has passed. The rich man sent a laborer for a dog. He gave him a hundred crowns for the teacher and twenty more for the journey, gave him a slice of bread and a pinch of salt, and for Azorka a smoked ham. Martin went to his godfather, they ate and drank. He helped his godfather to store firewood for the winter and returned on the fourth day.
– Where is Azorka? the owner asked.
“Our Azorka has gone bad,” answered the laborer.
“The other dogs must have been a bad influence on him, because he was a smart, respectful dog. And now he says this - his ears wither. If only you could hear! He says that you are a stupid arrogant and a liar, that you have appropriated half of the communal pasture and are sucking blood from the poor, lending them money at high interest rates, that you have twisted your own sister around your finger and are raising your hand even against your own mother. And he also threatened that as soon as he returned home, he would tell the whole village about your atrocities. These obscene words made me so angry that I tied a stone around his neck and threw it into the river. nine0003
The rich man was struck as if by thunder.
- Ugh, what an ungrateful dog! he was indignant. - I spent so much money on him, and he decided to repay me with black ingratitude! Well done, Martin. If Azorka returned, he would shame me to the whole village.
Since then, the rich peasant did not want to hear about taking a dog into his house.
The learned Azor stayed with the forester, but he never learned to speak.
