Is your toddler a bit bug obsessed?

There is no surprise there because bugs are VERY interesting.

One of the best ways you can teach your child is to follow their lead when it comes to what they are interested in.

If your toddler is all about bugs then pick activities and books that support their love for bugs.

In this post I will give you ideas for bug activities for toddlers, crafts, games, and bug books that your little one is sure to enjoy.

The Best Bug Activities for Toddlers

(This post contains affiliate links.  To read our full disclosure policy click here.)

How do you teach kids about bugs?

You can use many different learning modalities to teach kids about bugs.

Getting outside and exploring bugs is one of the top ways for them to soak up information.

You can also read about different types of bugs that you may not see in your everyday life.

Playing bug games or doing bug art for toddlers is also a great way to teach active learnings.

What do you teach preschoolers about bugs?

When you are teaching preschools or toddlers about bugs you will want to stick to active learning techniques.

Get creative!
This could mean singing songs about bugs or acting out different bugs. For example you could have your little ones hop like a grass hopper or buzz like a bee.

Learning About Bugs for Toddlers

File folder games or quiet book printables can be a great way for children to learn about bugs as well as other educational concepts like shapes, colors, and matching.

If you are teaching your toddler at home about bugs this is the perfect activity for your little one to do on their own or with you as more of a game.

You can CLICK HERE to check out the learning with bugs printables I have designed for toddlers and preschoolers.

Pretend Play with Bugs

Bug puppets (like these) can be a fun prop to use during story time or just for play.

You can use puppets to teach all sorts of concepts and they are especially great for teaching little ones about social skills.

You can also have lots of fun with toy bugs by playing hiding games or putting them into a sensory bin.

Bug Songs for Toddlers

Singing is a great way to encourage language development as well as learn about bugs.

Using songs and fingerplays allows children to learn language because of their repetitive nature.

Here are a few of my favorite bug songs for toddlers:

  • Itsy Bitsy Spider
  • Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee
  • The Ants Go Marching

Feel free to also make up your own….sometime those are the best ones!

Bug Play Dough Mats

Explore what bugs look like and encourage fine motor skills while you make bugs with play dough.

You can make your own bugs and see if your toddler tries to imitate you.

You can also use bug play dough mats (these are the ones we use) to give a little more structure and direction to the activity.

Easy Bug Crafts for Toddlers

Bug art for toddlers can be an easy way to learn about bugs and get creative.

Add these bug craft for toddlers ideas so that you can bring art and learning together.

Lady Bug Hat Craft: Make a simple craft with your toddler that they can wear as well.

This project requires just a couple of materials so it is easy to do in a pinch.

You can check out the lady bug hat craft HERE.

Bottle Cap Bugs: Have some extra bottle caps laying around? This craft is SUPER cute and is great because you can upcycle some bottle caps that you have laying around.

Get the details on how to make bottle cap bugs HERE.

Cupcake Liner Spider Craft: This spider craft would be perfect for Halloween or really any time of year.

This is a simple craft that your toddler will be able to do with a little assistance from you.

You can get the full instructions on this craft idea HERE.

Bug Books for Toddlers

Spending time looking at books is a great way to promote skills in all areas as well as learn about bugs.

Here are a few of my favorite bug books for toddlers.

I love nature books that feature real pictures and national geographic is well known for doing just that.

This book is perfect for little ones and adults as you may be surprised what you learn as well when reading this with your little one.

You can take a closer look at it HERE.

This book is a fun way to work on counting as well as fine motor skills with toddlers.

If you are worried about your child ripping pages then this is a good choice because it is a board book.

You can check it out HERE.

These are some of my FAVORITE bug books for toddlers.

They have great illustrations and they are the perfect length for young readers.

You can take a closer look at this book HERE.

Insect Games for Children

Insect games can be a fun way to introduce new vocabulary words as well as have fun.

One of favorite toddler games is Bingo.

It is simple and easy to set up.

Bingo encourages listening skills which will help your toddler in learning new concepts as well as participating in daily routines.

Early literacy skills are encouraged as well when the names of the bugs are included on the pictures.

You can grab my bug bingo game HERE.

I designed it with toddlers in mind so it is perfect for short attention spans. You can also use it as a matching game by using the calling cards for matching with the bingo cards instead of calling out the names.

I hope you enjoy learning about bugs with your little one and find these ideas helpful in your planning!

"Not a bug, but a feature." 17 incomprehensible words from IT slang that we increasingly hear in everyday life

IT specialties consistently occupy the first lines in the list of preferences of today's applicants, and words from the jargon of programmers are increasingly caught by the eye. Let's figure out what some of them mean - especially since you can meet them in a variety of areas. nine0003

From English agile - "flexible, agile". This is the name given to an agile approach to software development, used both in small teams and in large organizations. Agile suggests that the work on the project is divided into iterations - cycles of two or three weeks, as a result of which a mini-product is obtained, ready for independent launch.

However, the term "agile" has long been used to describe workflows outside of IT: this method implies a high speed of creating finished products and a quick response to changes and new circumstances in any area. Relatively speaking, you can develop a new school curriculum for a year and implement it all at once, or you can gradually make changes and innovations to the existing program during the year and see if they are effective, how teachers and schoolchildren react to them, whether it is worth sticking to the original plan of changes or you need to move in the other direction. In agile, people are more important than processes, results are more important than documentation, and flexibility is more important than a plan. nine0003

A "bug" is a software error, a defect. Literally English bug is translated as "beetle" or "bug", and the report containing information about the error is called bug report . The phrase “not a bug, but a feature” is worth a separate mention, meaning that everything works as it was intended. "Features" (from English feature , "characteristic, property") is an additional, specially invented (and, perhaps, non-obvious) program option. In colloquial speech, a "bug" can be called any failure in the operation of electronics (and not only). nine0003

From English front-end and back-end . These professionalisms refer to the "architecture" of the software: the front-end is called its client side, and the back-end is the internal functioning. In other words, the frontend is everything that you see on the screen of the device, and the backend is everything that functions somewhere on the server, on the side of the developer and service provider. The profession of back-end developers is considered one of the most difficult in the field of IT.

For example, you are creating a new website or application. After development, they go through a rather long procedure of adjustments and testing. When they are finally "rolled out", they become publicly available to users. In addition, a site or application can be "rolled up" (make changes, launch a new version) and "roll back" - return to the previous version, eliminating all the changes made. nine0003

From English to deploy , "deploy, put into action." This term refers to the publication of a working version of an application, a site at the site of its operation. In other words, deployment is a procedure for transferring a site to a server, consisting of a number of interrelated actions and being part of the program life cycle.

These words denote a grade (in other words, a rank) in the hierarchy of IT specialists (and now employees in general): the grade system exists in most large corporations. The employee's competencies and his value in the labor market depend on the grade. June (from English junior , “junior”) solves simple tasks under the supervision of experienced colleagues, middle (from English middle , “middle”) develops larger parts of the project, but under the supervision of seniors, and senior (from English senior , "senior") has extensive skills and is responsible for almost the entire process, as well as for middles and juniors.

In the IT field, a commit (from English to commit , “commit, bind oneself”) is the preservation and fixation of program code changes in an archive or repository - a place for storing and maintaining any data. Accordingly, to commit means to commit, to save the code in the repository. A committer is a specialist who performs commits. nine0003

However, in offices you can often hear the verb "commit", which has nothing to do with programming. To commit means to agree, to confirm your participation in the meeting. “He and I committed at 3:00 pm” is a very common expression in the business environment.

In programming, a crutch is a way to fix imperfections in lame code without major interference with it. This is a quick and not always pretty fix to a problem that should be replaced with a longer-term, resource-intensive fix later on. nine0003

A framework (from English framework , "framework, structure") is called ready-made models, blanks or templates for a software platform, on the basis of which your own code is written. This development tool consists of standard solutions to simplify the work of the programmer.

From English stack - "stack, pile, mound." Now in the IT environment, a stack is a set of tools or a list of technologies used when working on a project. These include programming languages, database management systems, frameworks (templates) and more. The stack is like a programmer's inventory while working on a specific task. nine0003

Timlid is short for English. team leader , that is, the head of the development team, combining the qualities of an experienced programmer and manager. The team leader simultaneously possesses both an understanding of the ideological and technical side of the project, and good management skills.

Well, in general, the word "teamlead" is as common in the business environment as "agile" or "senior" - it does not have a strict binding to the IT field. A team leader, that is, a manager with a subordinate team, is a position, not a profession, so you can become one only as a result of gaining experience and professional competence.
