Compound Words Worksheets
Compound words are words that are formed when two smaller forms of them come together. They allow you to add some pizzazz to your language. The following collection of activity sheets will introduce your students to types of words. Students will practice identifying and constructing words by finding them in the given sentences, building them from a given collection of words within a word bank, choosing whether a word pair is compound or not, and more. Answer keys have been provided for instructors. If these do not fit within your curriculum, these sheets may be used as extra credit assignments. Fun Contest Idea: Have your students list as many different words as they can, and give a prize to the students with the longest list.

Put each set of smaller words together to make a compound form. This is a great way to introduce this skill.
Put the words in the box together to form one in longer form. Write the new terms on the lines. Make as many as you can. Remember they can go on the front or back.
Match up the small words below to form new terms. Write them on the line. You will create something entirely new.
Circle every silly and crazy compound form found in each sentence. Some sentences may appear to have more than one.
Draw a picture of each word. Write them on the line above each of the drawing areas.
Read each pair of words below. Can they be put together? Color in YES or NO. If they can come together, write the term that is formed on the line.
The words below are all mixed up. Can you take them apart and put them back together again so that they make proper new term?
There is nothing wrong with being made of small parts! Put them together to be better than their original form.
Where is that bad boy in the sentence? This is another identification activity that can really help you get better at this skill.
Write a sentence with the words that you are given and make them pop, PLEASE! You will also review skills that we have already covered.
Match the word parts below to form new ones. Please make them as interesting as possible. Write your them on the lines.
Underline the word(s) that we have been discussing and practice this skill some more.
Is penguinhula a word? If not, it should be. Don't you think? This worksheet is great to help you review everything that we have learned in this section.
This is a brainstorming activity and this will help your ability to create new words flourish.
Fill in the blank in each sentence with a new word that makes sense. Some of the terms that you come up with can be a little off the mark too.
Compound Words: Open, Closed, And Hyphenated Forms
Do you want to upgrade your writing style or add variations to it? What better way to do it than by using compound words. Compounds words are two or more words that give a new look to the information that needs to be delivered.
A compound word is a term that is formed from two or even more smaller words. These words combine to form a completely new term. An example would be "airplane" which is a blend of the words air and plane. The new word that is formed will have usually have a similar or related meaning to the singular words, but under some circumstance they will mean something completely different. An example of this is the term: backlog. This word means to have a series of unfinished work which differs a good deal from the original terms. A common misconception of these types of words is that they need combined in way so that they look like a single word. That is only one form of compound word and is referred to as the closed format. They can take on two other forms. The open format is when a space exists between the words that are present. The occurs when an adjective is used with a noun to form a new noun (example: living room). The hyphenated form comes into play when a compound adjective is located just before the noun it modifies (example: long-term).
The new word formed is not even technically wrong; this is why the English language is so flexible and gives a person a chance to play with the order of things. It is a way to add more words to the literature according to the demand of the writer. You can clear your concept about compounds by reading the elaborated examples below.
Examples of Compound Words
Example 1: Anyhow
This is a compound word made up of the terms, "Any" and "How." They independently have different meanings, and none of them is closely associated with the compound's meaning.
Example 2: Backpack
The compound word is for a bag that is carried on the back. However, instead of explaining the use of this bag every time while writing, people use the word backpack to simplify.
Example 3: long run
Here, "Long" and "Run" are not joined together like in other examples. However, it is a compound word because it is said together and gives one meaning. It is an example of an open form.
There are three types of compound words: open, closed, and hyphenated. These are explained in detail below.
Open Form
These types of compound words are not joined but are said together. The two words written together form a new word with its meaning different or connected to the meanings of the roots.
High school
High means the topmost vertical range, and a school is where you get educated. So, a high school becomes a school with the highest level of education that a school can offer.
Hot dog
The hotness measures heat, and a dog is an animal. However, when written together, a hot dog becomes a food item.
Ice cream
Ice is the solid state of water, and cream is a thick slurry. When combined, it becomes a category of a food item.
Closed Form
Compound words that do not have any space between their combination are known as closed compound words. These are new words that did not exist before but, due to overuse, are now acceptable.
Playground
Play comes from playing, an activity. At the same time, a ground is a place. A new word for a place to play is created when these terms are joined.
Footprint
A foot is a body organ, and a print is an impression. When we combine it, it becomes a print of the foot.
Skateboard
Skating is a sport, and a board is a panel or a slate. Combining these gives us a name for the skating equipment.
Hyphenated Form
Such compound words in which hyphens are placed between two or three different words to emphasize the connection or give an entirely different meaning from the roots.
Empty-hand
The word is used to tell that a person has nothing or was unsuccessful in procuring something.
Deep-fried
Deep-fried means to fry food in a pan filled with oil such that the meat or vegetables are wholly drowned.
7 ways to quickly memorize difficult words in English
English words can be memorized without sleepless nights and cramming. For this, mnemonics was invented. We share ways that will help you remember important vocabulary forever and pump your imagination.
It is difficult for the brain to perceive long and complex words - some of the letters just want to get lost during the dictation. To better remember them, we offer a simple life hack: divide the word into its component parts and come up with an association for each of them. Any image that will help you remember the correct spelling and meaning will do here. The main thing is that these components are consonant with your main word.
How to put it into practice? For example, take the word bombastic . If you divide it into consonant parts, you get bomb (bomb) and fantastic (fantastic). It immediately seems to be something excessive and bright. So we remember that bombastic means "pompous" and "pompous".
Choose easy ways to remember words and learn. For example, subscribe to our "Lentensive" - and for two weeks you will receive light and, most importantly, short letters in the mail about the most interesting things in English.
Many people who learn English at first try to look for features in words that are similar to their native language or another language that they know well. This is especially effective when combined with associations.
For example, you want to remember the word constituent is a constituent. Sounds similar to the Russian word "constitution". The constitution is the most important political document that describes the rights of the people. At the same time, this is only one of the parts that reflects the structure of the country, that is, its component. So they remembered!
There are words in English that are very similar in sound but completely different in meaning. These small differences are worth focusing on when memorizing.
For example, let's take affect (influence) and effect (effect, result) - two words that are often confused with each other. The easiest option is to draw a parallel with the Russian language. When we hear the first word, we remember the state of affect. It comes when something affects our emotions and causes them to surge.
The second word is also consonant with the Russian "effect". We call on the power of associations to help: if some action is effective, then it gives the result of . So we remember the difference between words.
When we see an unfamiliar word, it reminds us of a secret cipher. Instead of a clear image, there is a meaningless combination of letters that does not tell us anything, but even to it you can pick up your own key.
If it is not possible to focus on visual associations, turn to sound ones. Perhaps some part of the word reminds you of the tune of a familiar song or jingle. Try putting your cipher on top and hum it. The next time you need it, you can go back to that melody and remember how the word was written.
This method is suitable for memorizing individual words or grammar structures. Teachers sometimes give the task to watch a movie with useful vocabulary, listen to a thematic podcast, or parse a song. For students, this is an opportunity to get acquainted with living English and how it works in the real world, and at the same time learn something new.
To improve your vocabulary or understand how the different tenses work, pay attention to how they are used in real speech. For example, write down a new word along with the context in which it was used. Analyze why it is there, who said it, and how. When you need a word in the future, remember where you heard it, and it will be remembered.
When there are many words to remember, it is inconvenient to come up with separate associations for each. But there is a way out! In this case, you can combine them into an understandable story. This is especially useful if the words refer to the same topic.
For example, take the topic of cinema, and in it the words:
Plot- plot
Tear-Jerking- tearful, heartbreaking
Music Score- Musical accompaniment
Sequel- Sicvel 9005 Director- Director0008 director
Let's try to make a story out of this:
I went on a date to the movies. The film's plot was terrible, however, the music score was so tear-jerking, I cried. Is the reason the director is already developing a sequel to inflict more pain on viewers?
I went on a date to the cinema. The plot of the film was terrible, but the music was so heartbreaking that I cried. The reason the director is already working on a sequel is hurt the audience even more?
To accurately remember this chain of words, imagine this situation in your head in the most vivid colors, as if you really went on a date to the movies.
If you are a fan of hanging cards with new words around the apartment, this method will definitely interest you. In the series Sherlock, the main character had memories in the form of objects in his "mind halls". The same can be done with words, but instead of a fictional room, you can use your real apartment.
For example, you want to remember the adjective dirty (dirty). Write it on a piece of paper and hang it over the sink, at the same time imagining how you wash your dirty hands in it after the street. Or take the word mascot (talisman). It can be hung on an object that is significant to you personally or above your pet's house. So you will learn the word and give your cat the status of a happy talisman.
How to memorize difficult English words

- 10 difficult English words
Difficult English words: how to learn them?
It would seem that you have already learned to cope with simple words, the vocabulary has begun to replenish, you even use new words, but you come across a natural problem - complex words. This problem is especially acute for people who plan to use English in the professional field to communicate with their colleagues. But, no matter how terrible it may look, difficult words can also be dealt with!
To memorize simple words of one or two syllables, we use imagery and phonetic coding. This method is called mnemonics, it is also suitable for complex words, but in this case we will use several images, encoding words in parts. In this article, we will help you memorize 10 new words in this way.
How to help your child with learning in elementary school
What is important to remember
- Images should be voluminous, bright, colorful and large.
- When imagining images, look up.
- Feel free to imagine something unusual and funny - the weirder the image, the better it will be remembered.
- It is very important to pronounce the words aloud, so you will train the pronunciation, and if you are an auditory, then this practice will help you remember the words even better.
- Do not neglect repetition now and later, when 4-8 hours have passed since memorizing the words, otherwise all the work done will be a waste of time.
10 difficult English words
- Collaboration - collaboration. Let's break this word into the root and the prefix co-, we get two images: stake and laboratory. Imagine that two stakes are working in a laboratory. They collaborate to create a cure, such as vampirism. Imagine this image and say the word in English three times: collaboration, collaboration, collaboration.
- Nonplussed - stunned. We divide this word into two parts: the prefix non- and the root plussed, we get two images: nose and flame. Imagine how stunned you would be if flames burst out of your nose when you breathe! When the image is formed, repeat aloud three times in English: nonplussed, nonplussed, nonplussed.
- Anachronistic - obsolete, obsolete. We will divide this word into three parts and get the following images: anaconda, Ron Weasley (from the Harry Potter series of books / films) and the source. Imagine that an old anaconda (you can imagine it wrinkled) is being carried by Ron Weasley to a spring in the forest to drink water. Now say it out loud: anachronistic, anachronistic, anachronistic.
- Disinterested - disinterested. We divide the word into the prefix dis- and the root, we get two images: a disk and an intern. Imagine a stack of Hands Up! CDs that an intern from the hospital disinterestedly distributes to everyone on the street. After forming the image, be sure to say: disinterested, disinterested, disinterested.
- Unabashed - unabashed. Let's encode these words with the help of two images: an anaconda and a shoe. Imagine an anaconda that has eaten several shoes and is lying unperturbed, despite the fact that we see the outlines of the shoes it swallowed. Then say out loud: unabashed, unabashed, unabashed.
- Conscious - conscious, conscious. We divide the word into two parts and encode it using two images: a horse and a pole. Imagine a horse regaining consciousness after a failed pole vault, and then repeat the English word aloud: сonscious, сonscious, сonscious.
- Circumvent - outsmart. We will encode this complex word using three images: mote, kumquat and fan. Imagine a mote trying to outsmart a kumquat and take a seat under a fan in unbearable heat. When it was possible to form an image, say three times: circumvent, circumvent, circumvent.
- Commensurate - commensurate. To memorize this word, we will use two images: lump (snow) and a beaker. Imagine a huge beaker, commensurate with the same giant snowball. Represented? Then say three times: commensurate, commensurate, commensurate.
- Emollient - emollient. Let's divide the word into two parts and come up with images for them, for example, emo and elevator. Imagine emo in a falling elevator that lands on a cushion. Then say the word in English: emollient, emollient, emollient.
- Equanimity - composure. We encode the word with the help of two images: ecologist and halo. Imagine an ecologist with a halo on his head, cold-bloodedly chopping a tree. When the image is formed, say: equanimity, equanimity, equanimity.
After memorizing the first five words, it is important to repeat them, translating from Russian into English and vice versa at least three times. To do this, you can simply alternately close the left and right columns:
Collaboration
Nonplussed
Anachronistic
Disinterested
Unabashed 5
After the repetition, we can safely move on to the next five words. Our students using this technology can memorize up to 1000 words in 1 day.
After you have memorized the new five words, be sure to repeat them in the same way as the previous ones:
Conscious
Circumvent
Commensurate
Emollient
Equanimity
Now it will be useful to combine all 10 new words and repeat them again. Do not forget that this is not the final point of memorizing words, after that you need to consolidate and save new information, which means that you need to return to it as often as possible.
