However, the number of dinosaur games that successfully realize this fantasy is not infinite. Let's be honest that, until recently, fans of dinosaurs and large-caliber weapons were not exactly on a flat path. It's been a long, arduous journey, marked by bumpy-dog-like velociraptors, rifles that are as satisfying to shoot as hand-held, and jeeps that seem to roll themselves into the nearest ditch no matter what keys you press. If you're looking for thrills, here are the best dinosaur games on PC.

Ark: Survival Evolved

Our list of the best dinosaur games on PC opens the mastodon of this genre. As the subtitle in its name suggests, Ark is a dinosaur, which means you can only start killing dinosaurs after you've crafted your own spear to throw at pesky predators. Shooting isn't the most comfortable, and even years after the game hit the market, it still has a lot of bugs, but the sheer amount of creatures to fight, hunt, and tame in Ark will have you spending hundreds of hours exploring the game's many biomes.

By learning their quirks, you can ride and tame the Ark dinosaurs and use them to survive in this world, whether as simple mounts so you can move faster, or as resource gatherers, cargo carriers, and loyal foot soldiers. In addition, there are many mods for Ark: Survival Evolved.

Jurassic World Evolution 2

While most dinosaur games are about hunting dinosaurs, Frontier Developments chose to create the opposite with Jurassic World Evolution: a dinosaur farm. Instead of mowing down rare creatures with a minigun, you're trying to build a Jurassic Park that won't fall apart until day one. Naturally, the entire enterprise is subject to all sorts of disasters.

Lego Jurassic World

Sticking to the Jurassic Park franchise, Lego Jurassic World combines gameplay from TT Games specialized in adventure games, merged the storylines of the Jurassic Park trilogy and the first Jurassic World movie. In fact, these are the series' greatest hits, including more blocky Jeff Goldblum than you can bear.

The real fun here is that Lego games are one of the best co-op games, making this one of the best dinosaur games on PC, great to play with friends and family. There isn't much that makes this Lego game stand out from others - aside from the setting - but you can play as a huge number of different dinosaurs, which is great fun.

The Isle

The Isle is a multiplayer dinosaur survival game. A dinosaur survival sim that's still far from out of Steam Early Access, but there's nothing quite like it on PC. The gameplay is quite simple: you load into a server full of dinosaurs played by other people and try to survive in this world by harvesting smaller dinosaurs and avoiding predators at all costs.

However, where The Isle gets really interesting is when players start to form packs and groups on the server, leading to player-controlled herds, nests for your group to grow, and the inevitable massive dino battles.

Dino D-Day

stories. Dino D-Day is a refreshing alternative to traditional World War II shooters, combining Day of Defeat style semi-tactical play with the ferocious claws and claws that only dinosaurs can offer.

While the game sounds like a Blood and Bacon joke, it's actually a surprisingly creative class-based shooter with some really wild ideas, like a tiny dino that increases the power of its explosive charge by swiping its ankles, or a predator that can detect single targets and destroy them with just a few swings, like the Hunter from Left 4 Dead. Unfortunately, D-Day is now almost ten years old and the number of players has dwindled significantly. However, if you manage to convince your friends to buy it on sale, it will be a great way to have some fun with your friends.

Primal Carnage

Dino hunting games are a battle between man and beast, and that's what you get in Primal Carnage. On the one hand, hunters in sunglasses with big guns, on the other, giant reptiles ready to rumble.

While there are people who delve deep into role-playing servers, Primal Carnage is at its best when both sides just throw everything they have at each other, resulting in a silly, irresistible hand-to-hand fight. Any game where you can play as a pterodactyl, fly down, pick up guys and throw them to their deaths, deserves attention. Along with Dino D-Day, this is a multiplayer game that lacks players, so you'll probably need a few friends if you want to guarantee yourself a game.

Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter Reborn

If you are looking for a triceratops capture game that is closer to traditional hunting simulators than Turok, this is the best choice from the best dino games on PC. This remake of the beloved series from the late 90s is all about tracking, hunting and killing a variety of dinosaurs.

You'll have to sneak up on these big guys and hold your breath to get accurate shots, and the size and condition of each target determines how much reward you get for a clean kill. The game is a little sparse in content, but if you're tired of hunting deer, wild boars and other harmless forest creatures, then this may be the change of scenery you need.

Turok & Turok 2

Speaking of Turok, it might be hard to believe now, but before Gears of War and Call of Duty 4 tethered blockbuster shooters to beige reality, the genre had its fair share of bright contenders. The first Turok, in particular, is a relic of the Quake era, with mid-air spinning weapons, the furious speed of a dinosaur hunter's feet, and endless canyons of villains to blast through, but it offers some of the best dino-kills of its era.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a more complex game that focuses on non-linear mazes rather than the traditional hallways of other shooters of the era. Today, however, she's probably better known for her creative weapons, especially the terrifying Cerebral Bore, which does exactly the bloody job it says on the tin.

We would say that these are the leaders of the list of the best retro dinosaur games on PC.

Monster Hunter: World

Sure, so they're not technically dinosaurs, but it's hard to deny that Apceros or Anjanath are based on real dinosaurs, even if some of the bigger beasts in the game aren't. In case you missed this series, Monster Hunter: World is pretty much what it says on the cover: you play as a monster hunter and have to find, hunt down and destroy an entire world full of fantastical creatures in cinematic boss battles. And this is one of the best games from the list of the best dinosaur games on PC. Once killed, you will be able to butcher the carcass and find resources, return them to your camp and craft more powerful weapons and armor that will allow you to deal with even larger monsters.

The game features a huge selection of weapons, from standard sword and shield combos to more eccentric tools like the spear, and learning the movesets of each promises to be a steep difficulty curve.

Far Cry: Primal

Yes, for all you amateur archaeologists cracking their knuckles to type a long commentary, we know that Primal is set in the Mesolithic era, millions of years after the dinosaurs were wiped out by a cataclysm. However, if dinosaurs aren't your thing, then woolly rhinos, mammoths, and fearsome cave bears are just what you need, and Far Cry Primal has it all.

Primal allows you to hunt all of these creatures and tame some of them so you can send them into battle on your behalf. And if you get tired of the slaughter of mammals, it's still one of the best open-world games out there, and there are plenty of distractions and hidden quests to find along the way. It's not the best Far Cry, but it conveys a sense of backstory better than most games.

Saurian

This is a dinosaur simulator with a difference - you hatch as a baby saur and must survive into adulthood by avoiding predators and foraging daily. There is great attention to detail here, and Saurian flora and fauna are as historically and scientifically accurate as possible – and yes, that means dinosaurs with feathers.

Currently you can only play as a Dakotaraptor with a fabulous feathery tail or the recently released Triceratops, but both are incredibly realistic. It's time to find out if you could have been a dinosaur in those days and survived Hellscream's many trials. This game definitely deserves to be on the list of the best dinosaur games on PC.

Parkasaurus

There's no hunting, shooting or fighting dinosaurs here - instead we're going to put them in a charming, brightly colored amusement park, put a propeller cap and a pair of blinds on their little scaly heads and watch the money come in. What is this? Incredibly purple T-Rex in a wool cap holding a visitor in his mouth? Oh my God. Oh look, they're still on fire. Well, okay.

Parkasaurus is a charming dino park management game where your task is to keep your dinos and guests happy and not get hit. While the game's concept is similar to Jurassic Park Evolution, its execution couldn't be more different. The shiny, low-poly playstyle, user-friendly interface, and plenty of silly hats set it apart from the more realistic dino games on this list, but with over 24 dinosaurs to discover and care for, it's sure to please dino lovers looking to occupation to your liking.
