But in general, there is a bullish trend in this market: over the past few years, amber prices have increased ten (!) times.

If you go to the Klondike every other day, then you can earn $50 thousand in a year. And the owner of the pump, if he hits a vein, can raise this amount in a day. In parallel with mining, a system of trade and buying is developing. Amber balls (especially valued in China as cult objects) are produced on site. The nearest decent hotel in Sarny resembles Chinatown in terms of the number of people of Asian appearance and in fact is a black amber exchange.

What's the price

Buyers' prices for amber fluctuate. On the day of the events described, they were as follows

Once upon a time there were many abandoned huts in Dubrovitsa, now they are almost gone. Houses are bought by settlers from distant villages, who have grown rich on amber. Housing prices here are equal to the prices for apartments in Rivne, and sometimes even exceed them. Despite the crisis, new houses are being built, more and more expensive cars are on the streets. 90% of buyers of SUVs in car dealerships in Rivne are miners.

But recently it was an ordinary, unremarkable Ukrainian hinterland. Although a small amber industry existed here even during the Soviet era. Knowledgeable people - mostly visiting Balts - bought or bartered pebbles from the locals. It didn't bring in a lot of money. The old people remember how they heated stoves in the villages with amber, tarred the wooden roofs of houses with it.

After the collapse of the USSR, an enthusiast was found in Rivne - the former head of the regional level Vladimir Berbenets, who dreamed of creating an amber industry in Ukraine. He substantiated its prospects, enlisted the support of the Ministry of Finance and even created the state enterprise Ukrburshtyn.

Production facilities were built, equipment and technologies were purchased - mainly in Germany and Poland. The plans included a comprehensive development of the industry: stone mining, processing, production of jewelry and other goods - succinic, adipic and glutaric acids. The latter were planned to be produced using waste from the Rivneazot enterprise.

Ukrburshtyn was officially allocated a forest plot for mining. A complete technological chain was assumed: felling and sale of wood, removal of amber-bearing soils, extraction of stone, land reclamation and planting of a new forest. In 1998 the factory was built. The then Prime Minister Valery Pustovoitenko came to its grand opening.

But someone has laid eyes on a promising business. Who? This is a separate topic that requires careful investigation.

Almost immediately, Ukrburshtyn was introduced into the structure of the State Joint-Stock Company "Ukrainian Polymetals". Then a series of legal transformations took place: the withdrawal of assets, the bankruptcy procedure, external management . .. For twelve years, the enterprise was in the process of reorganization, coordinated by an arbitration manager.

The amber industry began to be systematically created, but was never created under Kuchma. Under Yushchenko, everything turned out to be quite bad. The local elites (including criminal ones) have changed, and the undercover struggle in the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has intensified. With the coming to power of Yanukovych, a new "order" was established. The newly appointed officials and "individual representatives of business circles" made it clear to the local amber barons: if you don't want war, give us 50% of the amber, sell the remaining 50% in your favor, but sell it to those whom we indicate.

Around the same time, the Chinese arrived at the hotel in Sarny. In China itself, by that time, an amber boom had begun - the "dragon stone" had incredibly risen in price.

Today, the situation in the local forests can be described in a few words: everyone digs for himself. A familiar official in Dubrovitsa complained: "We used to know where each pump was, who its owner was, and we could control them all, but now it's chaos."

"Could control" - a Freudian slip. Because here everyone feeds on amber in one way or another. The same officials fight illegal mining and live from it. And so the majority in this region. A school teacher digs in his spare time, a doctor, a librarian, a taxi driver, a student, a pensioner dig… Church communities dig, villages dig.

In the north of Rivne region, in remote villages, there are many Protestant Christians - Baptists and Pentecostals. Law enforcement officers are afraid to look into these corners. When a police car stops, small children immediately sit under its wheels, so they don’t turn around and run away. The whole village is gathering. With pitchforks. And who and with a carbine. Scream. Hitting. A policeman, even an ordinary sergeant, is perceived as a representative of the authorities. And against his word there is always one argument: "You gave me a robot? Incited the plant? Ni? Recently adopted additions to the legislation have transferred the illegal circulation of amber from the category of administrative violations to criminal ones. But this did not overcome the fishery, but only raised the stakes. If earlier criminal racketeering cost $100 per day of operation of a motor pump in the forest, now the rates are $700 and more. And this is only for the right to erode the soil during the day! In total, the operation of the pump - with fuel, preparatory stages and staff salaries - costs an average of $ 1,500 per day. And it is not a fact that all this is beaten off by the found amber. For in many respects fishing depends on luck.
