Dinosaur fossil printables
Free Fossil Printables and Montessori-Inspired Fossil Activities
Fossils are fascinating for a variety of ages. We’re starting a fossil theme that’s designed for preschool through early elementary. While it doesn’t specifically include the Montessori Great Lessons, it has free fossil printables and activities that can work well along with the Great Lessons.
As usual, you’ll find a new printable pack (a Montessori-inspired fossil pack) for our newsletter subscribers’ resource library!

Montessori Shelves with Fossil-Themed ActivitiesMontessori Shelves with Fossil-Themed Activities
You’ll find Montessori-inspired fossil numbers, letters, and and more (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber).
Note: The Montessori-inspired fossil pack isn’t designed as a complete fossil unit but as supplemental materials. I design the packs using realistic images that I’ve often looked for when preparing a unit study (such as font cards and phonogram cards featuring the letter and phonogram related to the theme and math cards with realistic images that fit the theme and can be adapted for math activities at a variety of levels.)
You could mix your fossil-themed activities among your shelves according to curriculum area. Or you could have a special fossil-themed area something like the one pictured. My shelves at the beginning of our unit have a mixture of skill levels. Many of the activities can be adapted for a variety of levels. Many of these are designed for early elementary as well as preschoolers. If you’re a homeschooler, just choose the activities that work for your child’s interests and ability levels. If you don’t have room for all the activities you’d like to do, simply rotate them.
Montessori Shelves with Fossil-Themed Activities and Ichthyornis Skeleton Illustration
Notice the framed copy of Restored skeleton of Ichthyornis victor from the Cretaceous beds of Kansas, North America, from specimens in the Yale College Museum. It was found in A guide to the fossil mammals and birds in the Department of Geology and Palæontology in the British Museum (Natural History), 1896. It’s a free download from Flickr.
For our monthly featured art print, I purchased a Li’l DAVINCI art frame that opens in the front for easily changing a free art masterpiece printable or vintage illustration to fit with the month’s theme. The frame can be switched from horizontal to vertical without changing the hanger, which is perfect!
If you’re wondering about the rugs and rug box I use, both the rugs and wooden rug holder are from Montessori Services. I love the Montessori Services rugs and rug holder! I used to use an umbrella stand something like these. I loved that for 1-3 rugs, but I needed something different when I had more grandchildren and some projects that needed more than one rug.
Fossil Books for KidsEven though I have books on shelves, I’m now keeping many of my themed books in a forward-facing display after placing a bromeliad plant where the themed book basket was before. My seasonal books are now in that book basket.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).

Free Printable: Word Bubble from Fossil Letters by Little Owls Resources
This is simply a plastic shoebox from the Dollar Tree filled with sand and including a scoop. I cut out the word bubble that says “Can you find the fossil letters buried in the sand?” In the photos with my grandkids, you won’t see the printable. We had already completed the initial activities when I found the printable. There are also free fossil letter cards in the printable from Little Owls Resources. Ours uses Montessori blue letters for vowels and red for consonants as well as a real photo of ammonite, so I used ours.
Finding Fossil (Ammonite) Letters in the Sand and Matching Them to Sandpaper Letters
I set up this activity for my 4-year-old granddaughter, Sophia, who’s working on learning all her letters and letter sounds. I used one of the Montessori groupings of letters and buried the ammonite letters in the sand. She had a lot of fun matching the letters and completed the activity more than once!
Amber (er Phonogram) Word Building with Ammonite Alphabet Cards
My 4-year-old grandson, Caleb, wanted to do the activity, too! He’s working on the Montessori green series in reading, so I got out the “er” amber phonogram card and buried the letters for the word in the sand. Caleb had fun building the word. Here, he’s returning the scoop to the sand bin.
Note: The two books are You Can Be a Paleontologist: Discovering Dinosaurs with Dr. Scott and two helpful fossil pages from the DK Smithsonian Picturepedia (a book I use as a reference for many themes).
Finding Ammonite Letters to Build Spelling Words
Even my 8-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, wanted a turn! So I buried the cursive letters for one of her spelling words. She had fun with this, too!

You’ll see a variety of simple letter writing trays in my previous unit study posts. I often used the wooden tray from the Melissa & Doug Lace and Trace Shapes. You can use whatever tray or container works best for you, though.
I typically now use this lovely spelling/alphabet tray from FamilyTreeWW on Etsy. I love that it has a slot that fits sandpaper letters as well as any type of cardstock! The sandpaper letters I use are available in print or cursive. I added a Schleich rabbit to the tray for interest.

Dinosaur Addition and SubtractionFree Printable: Dinosaur skeleton number cards 1-19 and symbols for addition and subtraction equations (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)
Free Printable: Herbivore and Carnivore Mats from Royal Baloo
I used dinosaurs from our Safari Ltd. Dinos TOOB and Carnivorous Dinos TOOB. Check out my free Safari Ltd. TOOB Keys to see which dinosurs are included in each TOOB.
Working with Dinosaur Herbivore and Carnivore Addition
Caleb is fascinated with herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. He often asks what a particular animal eats. So this was a perfect activity for him. I had the dinosaurs divided into two separate baskets. As he learns the diet of each dinoaur, I will be putting the dinosaurs in one basket to be sorted. First Caleb stood the animals of each group on their herbivore or carnivore card. Then he counted each set of dinosaurs and made an addition equation.
Working with Dinosaur Subtraction
Because stegosaurus was one of the earlier dinosaurs in history, I had stegosaurus return to his basket. Then Caleb made a subtraction equation!
There are so many different ways you can use this printable. Just use your creativity!

Dinosaur fossils frozen in time
Fossils and bones of these ancient animals tell us about the existence of dinosaurs. Scientists divide fossils into two types. The first type is the real remains of animals, such as teeth, parts of the skeleton. The second is various traces and prints on the stones. For example, fossils of ancient fish are often found on rocks as prints. Dinosaur fossils are more often of the first type. It can also be traces of teeth, feet or excrement.
Over the years, paleontologists have been able to discover many fossils, and even complete skeletons, that have literally remained preserved in time. From some of the remains, you can even see what the dinosaur did in its last moment of life. Others show a picture of a dinosaur. Let's fast forward millions of years and look at the 10 most interesting dinosaur fossils according to most-beauty.ru.

Tyrannosaurus rex chasing a sauropod
© 2014 Falkingham et al.
American Museum of Natural History archaeologist Roland Bird discovered a series of curious footprint fossils in 1938. It was found that these are traces of a tyrannosaurus rex and a sauropod that they left more than 111 million years ago. The two lines of tracks were connected to each other, which means that the tyrannosaurus was chasing the sauropod.
It is difficult to pinpoint the dramatic nature of those events. Maybe the predator was running after the sauropod. At a certain point, his trail is interrupted. This suggested that the tyrannosaurus had bitten its prey. Other archaeologists believe that Rex followed the trail of the sauropod. One thing is certain, the predator pursued the prey. These prints were found in Texas, US.

Hunter turned prey

Many birds feed exclusively on fish. During the time of the dinosaurs, the first bird was the pterosaur. It is more correct to say that it was a reptile that learned to fly. In the district of Solnhofen, Germany in 2009, ancient fossils of three animals from the dinosaur era were found: a small fish, a pterosaur, and an aspidorhinch. It was an extinct genus of predatory fish. From their position, paleontologists understood the dramatic events 155 million years ago.
A pterosaur was fishing on the surface of the water. With his beak, he managed to catch a small fish, as at that moment an aspidorhinch grabbed him by the wing. A huge fish pulled the pterosaur underwater. She tried to swallow it, but could not because of the large size of the latter. The pterosaur got stuck in the throat of the fish, and they all ended up at the bottom. After millions of years, scientists were able to detect them and understand how everything happened.
By the way, there is a very interesting article about the most beautiful fish of our planet on most-beauty.ru.

Battle of Two Dinosaurs
Photo: © David Clark/Dinosaurs Alive/IMAX Film/Giant Screen Films.
The laws of nature are cruel but fair. Animals kill each other for food and life. Dinosaurs did the same. The Gobi Desert in Mongolia is famous for the many dinosaurs found there. All of them are perfectly preserved due to the climate of the region. In 1971, archaeologists discovered the whole remains of two dinosaurs there. One of them attacked the other, but never finished his job. Scientists suggest that at that moment a sand dune collapsed on them, preserving the skeletons in a fighting position for 75 million years. Some scholars suggest that they may have killed each other in combat.
The predator was a Velociraptor, and the Protoceratops defended itself. The latter was a herbivorous dinosaur. The remains even show the progress of the battle. The Velociraptor poked and pressed down on the Protoceratops' neck with its foot. Obviously, damaging the artery in the process. The bleeding protoceratops tried to push back the predator and bit him on the paw.
For some reason they remained in that position. Maybe they were covered in a dune, maybe they bled to death. It is possible that the heavy Protoceratops simply strangled the lighter Velociraptor with its weight. It will remain a secret. The editors of most-beauty are waiting for your suggestions about this fight in the comments to this article.

Sleeping Dinosaur
By Riley Black.
smithsonian.com
10/9/2012
Even with the vast number of fossils found, there is still a lot we don't know about dinosaurs. We can only speculate about their lifestyle, diet, and hunting method. For example, we don't know how big dinosaurs and predators like tyrannosaurus slept. In what position? Nearly all of the fossils were dinosaurs that were already dead or were found at the time of death. This was evidenced by their body position.
But in 2004, two archaeologists found the remains of a sleeping dinosaur in China. The dinosaur was a troodontid species. The skeleton was found in a curled up position. It was called "Mei Long" or "Sleeping Dragon". Presumably the age of the find is about 140 million years. Thanks to this discovery, scientists have established that birds and dinosaurs descended from the same ancestors. Dinosaurs were also warm-blooded animals.
Mei Long died in his sleep as a result of a volcanic eruption or carbon monoxide poisoning. It is poisoning that is considered the most accurate version. Other remains of similar animals were found nearby, but only one was sleeping.

Parents
Scientists in 2003 managed to unearth a large group of fossils of 35 dinosaurs. The find is 125 million years old. The dinosaur species was called Psittacosaurus. They are also called "parrot lizard". They were small dinosaurs up to one meter tall, walking on two legs. A distinctive feature was the beak, which is similar in shape to the beak of a parrot. Psittacosaurus fed on various fruits and laid eggs.
The interesting thing about the find is that only one of the dinosaurs found was an adult, while the rest were small. This means that the adult cared for his offspring. All of them died instantly from the collapse or volcanic eruption, as they were all in an upright position.
The discovery proved that similar dinosaurs took care of their offspring. Even in modern reptiles, this is rare, but it is common in birds. So dinosaurs are more akin to birds than to reptiles like crocodiles.

Lovers

The next interesting fossil is called Romeo and Juliet. It was found in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. These are the fossils of two bird-like dinosaurs that lived together. Scientists suggest that it was a female and a male. They had marriage games. The male was courting the female, but something happened that immediately killed them. Maybe it's an eruption, or a sand dune collapsed on them.
They were oviraptors. These dinosaurs did not fly, but had feathers, tails, and beaks. They, like peacocks, walked in front of the females and showed their beautiful tail. Sudden death interrupted love many millions of years ago.

Baby dinosaur that the snake wanted to eat

Even huge dinosaurs had relatively small eggs. They were easy prey for adult crawlers such as snakes. 67 million years ago there was a genus of snake Sanajeh indicus. Its fossils were discovered in 1984 in India. Paleontologists have determined that the snake was about to eat a baby dinosaur. The exact type of dinosaur could not be determined. Presumably it is a herbivorous sauropod or titanosaur.
At first, scientists did not notice anything interesting in the snake fossils. But then they took a closer look. Scientists have discovered that a 3.5-meter snake crawled into a dinosaur nest and found three eggs there. It was at this moment that the baby began to hatch. The snake was about to eat the baby, when suddenly the nest was suddenly filled with mud. It may have been due to heavy rains. And the snake, and the cub, and the eggs remained untouched for millions of years.

Dinosaur stuck in the mud

Bottom photo: © Junchang Lu. Source: seeker.com
We have already said that most dinosaurs were found at the moment of death or after death. A unique fossil was found in Ganzhou in China, which they called the "mud dragon". It was an oviraptorosaurus. It was similar to birds, walked on two legs, had wings, feathers and a toothless beak, but did not fly. The dinosaur got stuck in the mud and tried to get out to the last. This is evidenced by his posture. He stretched himself up, trying to escape, but failed.
For scientists, this fossil is very important, as it refers to the period of the likely impact of a meteorite on Earth and the death of dinosaurs. She can tell a lot about those events. Found the fossil by accident during construction work.

Scavenger
In China in 2008, bones and teeth of two types of dinosaurs were found. The teeth belonged to a velociraptor or other related dinosaur. The bones belonged to Protoceratops. This dinosaur is much larger than the Velociraptor. But how could they kill him?
Velociraptors reached no more than 1.5 meters in height, the herbivorous Protoceratops is much larger. Probably, the predator ate an already dead dinosaur. This also confirms the fact that teeth marks were left on the dinosaur's head. This means that dinosaurs did not disdain to eat carrion.

Dinosaur found exactly as it looked millions of years ago
Fossils are rarely found intact and untouched by time. As a rule, these are fragments of bones, teeth or other parts of the skeleton. Rarely are preserved fabrics or feathers found. What luck befell the scientists when they found an intact dinosaur, whose age is 110 million years. It was a nodosaurus.
He was accidentally discovered while working in mines in Canada in 2011. These were rather large animals, weighing up to 1400 kilograms. They ate grass and had thick armor, as well as sharp half-meter ledges on the sides. They were relatives of modern rhinos.
Scientists suggest that circumstances helped the dinosaur to survive. The dead carcass was washed into the ocean, and there it fell into a whirlpool and was covered with a layer of mud. The minerals on the skin reacted and preserved the body, which has been perfectly preserved to this day.
In conclusion
So our article about ancient dinosaur fossils came up. We hope you enjoyed spending a few minutes with us. The editors of most-beauty.ru are waiting for your comments.
