Reading Kingdom Benefits:

Research based and incredibly effective.

The program adapts to every child and provides individualized instruction.

Kids can use the program on their own

It's fun so children think they're playing a game and want to use it.

It works as a standalone curriculum or a supplement.

According to the Department of Education:

2 out of 3 children fail to become proficient readers!

It's shocking, but true!

Until now educators relied on phonics to teach reading. But fewer than 1 in 5 words can be "sounded out" and there are 1,768 ways to spell 40 sounds. Consider the sentence above where "ea" can be pronounced 13 different ways!

Reading requires 6 skills. Phonics teaches only 1. Reading Kingdom teaches all 6. It is the first system available that uses the "Phonics-PLUS" system.

Oleg Makarenko, for RIA Novosti

When I am telling the benefits of traditional hobbies, such as reading books or, say, chess, a marshmallow. . I still love to read, and there were years when I managed to absorb a book a day, so I can say with full knowledge of the matter: in terms of teaching life, books are far behind computer games.

The same is true of traditional games such as chess or, for example, Go, which has recently been finally conquered by robots. I have had to get involved in both, and I am convinced that if the great grandmasters and champions of the past had access to good computer games, they would agree with me. You and I live in the 21st century, and it is foolish to cast aside its achievements just for the reason that we were not told about them in school lessons.

"The wasted years". Who plays computer games for days

September 30, 2017, 08:00

Please note: the benefits of reading are usually spoken of very vaguely, claiming that it "develops the brain" and "broadens one's horizons." The benefits of computer games can be defined much more specifically.

Let's start simple. Dynamic multiplayer games like Team Fortress or different versions of CoD are good at developing reactions. It's a classic sport, with all the benefits that come with it, but without most of the nasty side effects like sports injuries.

Multiplayer team games such as Dota or LoL teach teamwork, resolve conflicts gently, and properly distribute responsibilities between team members. Players have the opportunity to try out different roles and practice managing a small group.

Role-playing games, RPGs, teach the essential skill of making plans in life. All RPGs are built on the same principle: at first, the player is weak and poor, but as he "pumps" his skills and completes important tasks, he acquires strength, money, and the connections necessary to solve the main game tasks.

Wrath of the gods: five computer games that offended religious feelings The player, for example, learns to extract iron from the bowels of the earth, smelt steel out of it, and then make better tools out of steel. I suppose it is because of this that Minecraft was included in the program of some Swedish schools. True, I would supplement Minecraft with at least the Factorio game, which provides basic knowledge about the organization of production, but I think this is still ahead of the Swedes.

Screenshot of the game "Minecraft"

Survival games like "Rimvolda" stand apart, in which the player manages a small community of people who are poorly compatible with each other: there he has to not only plan the "family" budget and decide who will hunt, but who cook food, but also to resolve quarrels that arise among his wards.

Of course, strategies play the most important role in learning. Good historical games, like Europa or Victoria by Paradoxes, allow the player to take control of the state and understand why simple decisions like "shoot them all" or "take away and divide" are so attractive on paper, in real life lead to disaster.

The State Duma was asked to check games about animal abuse

Games that offer to be, say, the president of a small tropical island, turning it into either a banana republic or a flourishing tourist paradise. Adding to the same sobering category are city builders like Cities XL, after playing which it becomes clear that the problem of traffic jams is much deeper than it seems to the average driver.

There are also strategies of a purely military nature, in which the emphasis is not on politics with the economy, but on the direct command and control of troops. Excellent simulators have already been released of both tactical battles, in which it is necessary to competently place fighters on the ground, and military campaigns, in which the supreme commander gives orders to entire armies and fronts on the headquarters map.

In my time, I devoted a lot of time to economic simulations such as Sid Meier's Railroads. When building branches, it was necessary to take into account not only technical details, such as the slope of the rails and the power of locomotives, but also to seriously think about the economic component, organizing bond issues and deciding how much money the company would bring from connecting the next city to the railway network.

Screenshot of Sid Meier's Railways

Computer shooter games are dangerous for the brain, scientists say force the player to make difficult moral choices over and over again in situations where there is no right decision. This is an incredibly important educational function, which, unfortunately, is completely absent in both books and films.

A very important skill that is difficult for a student to learn outside the game world is the ability to lose. If games like the aforementioned "The Witcher", "This is the Police" or, say, "This War of Mine" show that sometimes you have to choose between bad and very bad, then online sports games like Starcraft make you realize that in real life life, even excellent students have to regularly lose, and not to disembodied computer characters, but to real, live rivals. It is probably unnecessary to explain why it is so important to learn how to make responsible decisions as early as possible and calmly endure the unpleasant consequences of your own wrong choice.

Computer game character deified in Brazil

July 13, 2017, 03:08 PM

Now that I've skimmed through the very top of the world of educational computer games, I need to tell you why in real life games turn out to be for most of the players . .. useless. The fact is that games, like books, are different. Just as pulp fiction can only help to kill time in transport, so "casual" games are no more useful than, say, a card game at twenty-one.

Non-learning games from social networks are usually focused on two tasks: to draw the player in as much as possible and to extract as much money from him as possible. Another vast category of games, primitive fashion puzzles like Angry Birds, is perhaps even more harmful - these games offer the player to perform repetitive mechanical actions, dumbing him down with the reliability of an iPhone assembly line. Jumping from one simple game to another, the player naturally degrades.

You can change the situation in exactly the same way that good teachers do with books - by offering students the best examples of the genre. Of course, just saying the name aloud will not be enough: mastering, say, "Victory Day", one of the most historically accurate simulators of World War II, will require at least several hours of intense training: a beginner is very unlikely to get carried away with this game. However, a properly built program completely allows you to lead the player through all genres from scratch, introducing him to most of the gaming masterpieces created to date.

Find and dig: what video game testers really do

June 30, 2017, 09:00

By the way, in the course of such training, one more traditional school trouble can be defeated: the development of an animal fear of learning everything new. While adults who are far from computer games often cannot bring themselves to read a one-page instruction manual for a TV, experienced players master even very complex game systems without trembling in their hearts.

I am not an idealist. Although our country has now taken a course towards the digital economy, it will take at least another 5-10 years before computer games are carefully included in the school curriculum. However, this does not mean that everything is lost for you and me - no one bothers us to play games without the help of the state. If you are an experienced player, you do not need to explain anything. If not, find one: he will advise you which games to start with and which ones you should not even touch with a long stick because of a two-meter fence.
