Time Bomb. Is it possible to domesticate a wild animal? Looking at the hugs of people with lions or bears, wild cats huddling in the same bed with people, many are touched and think that it turns out that it is possible to tame a wild animal.
But the reality is completely different from the picture shown, the animal specialist is sure.“When living with a wild animal, you have to be constantly alert. Many stories end, for example, with the fact that people holding some kind of boas beat off their children from pets trying to swallow them, or even lose family members strangled by these very snakes, in which the owners and souls doted, ”says Alekberov .
And if a person decides to have a wild animal as a pet, and even more so a predator, there will always be risks to life, says doctor of the highest qualification category Mikhail Shelyakov. According to him, even people with special professional skills get into situations where they cannot cope with a predator, and this can never be avoided.
“The same seemingly trained circus tigers attack trainers – this was the case with Artur Bagdasarov, who was attacked by a tiger during a performance and who, fortunately, survived. And so it was with Snezhana Dautova, who, alas, was bitten to death by her wards. Is it worth remembering the famous Berberov family in the USSR, in whose apartment a lion and a puma lived.
Everything would be fine if the lion hadn't finally killed their 14-year-old son and hadn't pulled him up, fortunately not to death, mother, ”says Shelyakov.
Therefore, as the expert assures, even if the animal is completely tame and “almost a nipple was fed by the owner”, and then not a single step away from itself throughout its life, a tragedy can still happen.
Dmitry Fedoseev, co-owner of the Aibolit Plus veterinary clinic, confirms this. In his opinion, the passion for wild exotic animals does not fade away in people, but does not lead to anything good.
“Wild animals at home are a real time bomb. We can raise a tiger cub or a lion cub from birth, and this will result in the fact that instincts will still take their toll. If you hurt an animal - even by accident - it will start to defend itself. Forget to feed - get ready for the fact that you yourself can become food. It may simply seem to an animal that it is in danger, and you are the source of danger. And it attacks. And no one can blame him for this. Yes, lion cubs are very cool and cute, but from about 8 months old they are huge animals that threaten you, your loved ones, and those around you, because no one knows what is in their head, ”Fedoseev believes.
That is why wild animals should absolutely not be kept at home, Fedoseev believes. According to him, it must be taken into account that the beast can pose a threat to other people.
Veterinarian Tatyana Golneva, in turn, notes that keeping wild animals in a house, and even more so in an apartment, is both physically and psychologically very difficult for the animals themselves. After all, they, unlike dogs and cats, perceive living in an apartment or house as bondage almost at the genetic level.
“From a moral point of view, it is very cruel to keep wild animals in the house. Yes, you can have a huge territory, a large aviary, excellent care and feeding, but this does not negate the fact that the animal is in captivity. He doesn't care, no matter how much you want, it will be better in nature. Well, let's not forget about the risks.
Even smelling the blood of the owner, the animal can pounce, following the instinct of a predator. And he will not care if you fed him from birth. They are not attached to people like cats or dogs, they will never be so loyal, ”says the veterinarian.
Conditions that cannot be created
Meanwhile, doctor Shelyakov states, people keep such animals to show their status. For example, in the United Arab Emirates, sheikhs walk the streets with tigers on a leash, and show business stars show off unusual animals on social networks. Through all this, only one motive can be traced: the desire to stand out, to show one's uniqueness and fearlessness.
And if someone decides to stand out in this way, says the veterinarian of the highest category, he must take care of everything to the smallest detail.
“The owner of a wild animal must comply with all zoohygienic standards, create all conditions. The only problem is that creating them, if not impossible, then very difficult. Difficulties arise even at the vaccination stage. Here the lion seems to be a cat, but he is susceptible to diseases and dogs too. Therefore, they are given both a dog and a cat vaccine for prevention. But not all veterinarians even heard about it. Before you get such an animal, you need to study a huge layer of theory and evaluate your capabilities. Otherwise, due to improper conditions of detention, a tragedy can happen - the animal will simply go crazy and in this case it will definitely attack someone. As it happened quite recently with a monkey that attacked a girl in Mytishchi, ”the doctor believes.
Dr. Tatyana Golneva also adds that problems can arise even with feeding. Newborn or slightly older animals need special mixtures, which are very difficult to obtain and import into Russia. Additional difficulties arise with medicines, which are often impossible to obtain.
Also often, adds the co-owner of the veterinary clinic Fedoseev, wild animals get a lot of health problems at home.
“Raccoons kept in houses suffer from pancreatitis and die of obesity. Breeding meerkats for sale for the home has led to total hip dysplasia - they have problems with the pelvis and paws. Also, meerkats need to constantly warm themselves and they are afraid of large objects - in our homes they are in constant stress.
What good comes out of this? And what good is it, for example, to bring a crocodile to the doctor for examination, tying its mouth with tape, as happened in our clinic a few weeks ago? Wouldn’t it be better to let him go free so that he doesn’t get sores in the owners’ house and they don’t have to be treated?” the expert asks.
He also reports that in the experience of his patients, wild animals - lions or tigers - are usually kept at home by the owners only up to 6-8 months, until they grow up. This is because the owners stop coping and give their pets to zoos and circuses.
“My friends had a lion cub who was given a whole floor of a private house, but since he was 5 months old, even the owners were afraid to go up to this floor. As a result, they sent him to the circus. What was the point of picking up at all? I don't think it's okay to keep an animal in captivity. And I don't understand this wish. But if someone really wanted to, realize the responsibility and answer the question to yourself: will I, my relatives and neighbors be safe?” – concludes Fedoseev.
Veterinarian Alekberov also notes that an apartment and even a house, no matter what conditions are created for the animal, are not at all the conditions in which wild animals would like to live. And therefore, it is always necessary to distinguish between animals that want to live with a person, from those that do not need it.
“Wild animals will always look at freedom. If a domestic cat looks into the forest with some even fear and always comes back, the wild animal wants to leave - because its home is there, ”the doctor is sure.
Wild animals at home and the law
According to lawyer Maxim Kalinov, the issue of keeping wild animals in apartments and houses has been raised at various levels for a long time, and there are countless cases when wild domestic animals attack people.
So in 2019In the same year, Government Decree No. 793 appeared, which established which wild animals can be kept at home and which cannot. For keeping an animal from the list of prohibited animals, which includes the aforementioned lion cubs, cubs, cougars and many others, the owner may be held administratively liable. As a punishment, the violator can be charged up to five times the minimum wage from an individual, and the animal will be confiscated,” the lawyer said.
If the owner of the animal could not keep the animal, for example, on a walk, Kalinov clarifies, and it escaped and attacked the person, the owner will be liable under article 109Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "causing death by negligence".
“If an animal kills one person, then the punishment threatens up to two years in prison, which, most likely, if the owner of the animal has no criminal record, will cost a suspended sentence. If an animal bites two people, then under the same article from 3 to 4 years in prison and again conditionally,” the lawyer states.

What to do if you meet a wild animal in the forest
Danger in the forest!
How to behave when meeting with predators
What to do if you are alone with a wild animal?
Recently, attacks of wild animals on people in the forests have become more frequent. Mushroom pickers and tourists are in the greatest risk zone, however, everyone else can be face to face with a wolf or a bear: predators often come out of the forest in search of food. We will tell you what to do and how to behave when meeting a wild animal.
Bear
When encountering a bear, do not try to run away.
Hunters say: wild animals themselves avoid meeting a person, and in order not to run into a bear, it is enough to follow some rules of behavior in the forest. Experts advise moving through the forest not alone, but in company, and talking loudly to warn the beast of your approach: then the animal will not show itself.
It is best to stop for a halt in open areas of the forest, and after cooking on a fire, all leftover food must be burned - the bear can smell the food and go out to people. You also need to burn cans. If you suddenly meet cubs in the forest, you can’t stop to take a couple of pictures or just admire the cubs: their mother bear walks nearby, and she definitely won’t like that you approached her cubs.
If it was not possible to avoid a meeting, and you see an approaching bear, you need to try to remain calm, no matter how difficult it may be: in such a situation, a cold mind is the main assistant. If the bear has not noticed you, try to silently hide from his field of vision and carefully leave the forest. In the event that the predator is looking at you, talk to him in a low voice. The animal may come closer and stand on its hind legs to sniff you and make sure there is no threat. In this case, it is better not to move and in no case run away - the predator will regard this as a danger and will quickly be able to catch up with you. Don't try to climb the tree. When the bear is aggressive and about to attack, lie down on the ground and play dead. Most often, an inhabitant of the forest sees that a person is not dangerous, sniffs him and leaves. In other cases, it remains, on the contrary, to scream loudly, call for help and, if possible, rattle with metal objects: when the predator sees other people, it will get scared and run away.
Wolf
The wolf is acutely aware of fear.
The wolf feels fear better than all predators, so when meeting with him, first of all, you must not forget about maintaining calm. In no case do not turn your back on the wolf: he will regard this as a reason to attack. If you meet with a whole pack, slowly step back, while facing the wolves, talk loudly. Try to climb the first tree you come across.
If a wolf attacks, try not to be knocked to the ground, stay on your feet as long as possible and call for help loudly. You can try to insert a thick stick into the predator's mouth. When the jaw is closed, the animal will experience pain, try to get rid of the obstacle, and you will have time to run away.
Wild boar
You can escape from a wild boar on a tree.
Most often, the attack of a wild boar is provoked by the person himself. The beast attacks first if it is wounded and enraged: in such a situation it is better not to catch its eye. While the animal does not see you, you can try to hide unnoticed, but when the wounded boar sees the person and runs at him, only a few seconds remain for action, and you cannot hesitate.
The best way to protect yourself is to climb a tree, even if it is not high, but strong. Boars can't climb or jump and will soon lose interest in you. The animal can be scared away by the hunter's signals - special pyrotechnic cartridges. Do not try to use them as a means of self-defense: the boar will only get more angry. Point the charges into the air - in most cases the animal will leave.
Lynx
Lynx rarely attacks first.
The lynx behaves very carefully and tries never to catch the eye of a person. Even if the animal sees tourists or mushroom pickers, it will not attack and prefer to remain unnoticed. Danger exists only if the animal is wounded. It is almost impossible to prevent an attack, since the lynx usually hides in the branches of trees and appears unexpectedly.
However, do not forget that the lynx is the same cat, only big, and it is rather shy. The animal can be forced to leave by actively waving its arms and making loud noises.
If you see an animal moving away, do not try to get closer to it or lure it to you: the meeting may end in failure.
Moose
Moose can often be more dangerous than a bear.
Although an elk is a herbivore, it can often be more dangerous to humans than a bear. Moose are most aggressive during the mating season, which usually takes place in early autumn. In this situation, the elk is extremely dangerous, and it will be much easier to prevent such a meeting than to escape when it has already taken place.
