Autumn has finally arrived, and sadly, with it comes the season of colds and flu, viruses, infections, and diseases.

Since children are particularly prone to illness, moms and dads need to take extra steps to keep their kids healthy during the fall and winter.

Pediatricians "Polis. Euromed Group have compiled and prepared a list of several tips that will help you to meet this season prepared, and also easier to endure if the disease has come. nine0003

Use these tips to make the season a little more fun and bright for kids!

Which moms and dads rarely get sick in autumn and winter?

1. Provide healthier foods and drinks for children. The stronger your child's immune system gets through cold and flu season, the better. One of the best ways to boost your immune system is to eat foods and drinks that are rich in vitamins and nutrients. Try to include the following foods in your child's diet this winter:

  • Beef - contains zinc, which is vital for the production of white blood cells, which your child uses to kill bacteria.
  • Fruits that contain vitamin C - oranges, pomegranates, strawberries and raspberries - are high in this vital vitamin.
  • Garlic - contains allicin, a compound that fights bacteria and infections.
  • Yogurt containing probiotics - probiotics protect the digestive system from pathogenic microbes. nine0126

2. Limit sugar intake for children. The winter months are full of holidays that children love. Unfortunately, winter holidays often include sugary foods that can wreak havoc on a child's body. Increasing sugar intake not only suppresses the immune system, but also causes systemic inflammation. As a result, children who eat a lot of sugar become likely candidates for colds, flu, and more. Try to limit your kids' sugar intake to one small treat a day to help support their immune systems. nine0003

3. Keep children hydrated. A cold glass of water is probably the last thing kids want in winter, but it's what their bodies need to fight infection and disease. Water not only carries nutrients to the cells, but also removes toxins from the body. Thus, dehydration increases the child's risk of illness. For example, if your child weighs 22 kg, try to get him to drink 0.75 liters of water every day.

4. Make sure the children get enough sleep. Sleep is essential for a healthy immune system - it allows the body to heal and repair itself. If you're not sure how much sleep your kids need, here's a quick guide:

  • Children under 1 year old need 12-18 hours a day.
  • Toddlers aged 1-3 years need 12-14 hours each night.
  • Preschoolers aged 3 to 5 need 11-13 hours a day.
  • Children aged 5-10 need 10 to 11 hours every night.

5 . Replace children's toothbrushes. Believe it or not, one of the dirtiest surfaces in your home is your child's toothbrush. Germs often hide in the bristles, leading to infections and illnesses. Buy your child a new toothbrush in early fall and winter and replace it immediately if the child gets sick. nine0003

6. Teach and remind children to wash their hands. Although handwashing is a simple principle, it is sometimes overlooked by parents of young children. Hands serve as a gateway for germs into children's bodies, so the cleaner they are, the less likely your child will develop winter sickness or infection. Teach children to wash their hands:

  • Before and after every meal.
  • After touching dirt, debris, animals, or another person.
  • After sneezing, coughing, blowing nose. nine0126
  • Make sure your children always wash their hands with soap and water and for at least 30 seconds.

Tips for parents with SARS in a child and when to take children to the doctor.

Most fall/winter illnesses go away on their own after a few days, but some can turn into more serious health problems. Read symptoms and tips:

7. If your child wakes up at night with an earache, give him an antipyretic (ibuprofen, paracetamol). This will relieve the pain and the baby, and you can sleep peacefully until the morning. Ear hurts - anesthetize. Just remember that many drugs are prohibited for children (especially aspirin and analgin). You can also drip otipax into the sore ear, but its effect is weaker and shorter than ibuprofen and paracetamol.

8. There is only one exception to the pain-pain rule: abdominal pain. Abdominal pain should never be relieved before being examined by a doctor, because you can mask the "acute abdomen" (a pathology that requires urgent surgery - appendicitis, intussusception and other surgical pathology), waste time and dramatically worsen the condition and prognosis of the child. Mild pain in the abdomen - observed without anesthesia, moderate and severe - a reason to immediately call an ambulance or take the child to the emergency department of the children's hospital on their own. Babies who woke up crying and you have suspicions that something hurts the child, you need to distract for a while and gently at first, and then deeper and deeper - wrinkle your stomach and watch the grimace of pain on your face. There is a suspicion of abdominal pain - call an ambulance, no suspicions - give ibuprofen or paracetamol, calm down and put to bed. nine0003

9. A child with a fever is no reason to panic! Body temperature should rise with SARS. Neither 39 nor 40 degrees - by themselves, should not scare you much. Only a fever of more than 41.7 degrees is dangerous for the brain (with it, the denaturation of some important proteins begins), anything lower only worsens the state of health, but does not threaten the life and health of the child. The conditional figure to which the fever should not be reduced is 38. 5C. However, it is more correct to focus on the baby's well-being: if 37'2, but there is a strong chill - do not wait for 38'5, give the drug. Remember that the goal is not to bring down the body temperature to 36.6 C (it was 40.0 C - it became 390С, but the child felt better - this is a good sign and a sufficient effect).

10. If a child with ARVI, after a decrease in fever, starts running, playing like a healthy one, this is a good sign. If you lowered the temperature to an acceptable level, but he still lies weak, naughty, contact a pediatrician within the next 12 hours.

11. If a child eats almost nothing during an acute respiratory viral infection, or even lost weight after a few days of illness, this is not a problem. The main thing is that he does not stop drinking. nine0003

12. Vomiting and thinning of the stool during fever is a frequent occurrence, if this happens more than 4-5-6 times, then this threatens with dehydration. It is necessary to solder the child abundantly (low-osmolar rehydration solutions).

13. Children with ARVI up to 2 years of age should drink at least 1 liter of liquid, children over 2 years old - 1.5-2 liters. Fever leads to significant fluid loss, your task is to replenish these losses. You can drink any food liquid, optimally - compotes, teas, fruit drinks, juices. If the child is better at drinking cool liquids, drink cool liquids, this will not harm and will not affect the course of a viral infection in any way. Frequent breastfeeding is the full equivalent of heavy drinking. nine0003

14. It is not recommended to call an ambulance to bring down a fever, except in exceptional cases. It is not recommended to call the local pediatrician home if the child does not have a high fever, vomiting, or other symptoms that confine the child to bed. It also makes no sense to show the child to the pediatrician on the first or second day of a low fever, if you do not need a disability certificate (“sick leave”), or it is not accompanied by dangerous symptoms: repeated vomiting, rash, severe headache, shortness of breath, earache. It is correct to show for 2-3 days, because in the first days it is not yet clear which way the disease will proceed (tonsillitis, tracheitis, otitis media, etc.) and the pediatrician will still schedule a visit in a couple of days. The treatment of all SARS in the first days is the same: drinking plenty of fluids and reducing fever. nine0003

15. Delirium (hallucinations at the peak of fever) in a baby is an unpleasant thing, but it occurs frequently and is not at all dangerous. It is necessary to explain to the child what it is (for example, a waking dream), that this is all fake, it will pass along with the temperature; calm him down

16. Febrile convulsions - very often frightens parents. But they are not associated with epilepsy, always have a good prognosis and are almost not associated with the severity of fever (they may recur even at 37.5 C). Therefore, regularly giving an antipyretic to a child, trying not to allow the body temperature to rise above 38, is pointless and harmful. nine0003

17. Antibiotics are not related to the treatment of SARS. There is no fixed number of days of fever that alone (in the absence of other symptoms) indicate the need to start an antibiotic. An antibiotic is needed in case of complications of SARS, for example, sometimes with otitis media and urinary tract infections, always with pneumonia. Also, an antibiotic is needed if it was not originally SARS (with pyelonephritis and other bacterial diseases). An antibiotic is not at all a "last resort" if there is no point of application for it (if it is not indicated) - it will not speed up recovery from SARS, it will only add side effects (diarrhea, for example) and contribute to the general treasury of antibiotic resistance of microbes. nine0003

18. The second wave of fever is always suspect in terms of complications. The usual ARVI is feverish for 1-5 days, then the child is on the mend. But if the fever has already subsided, 1-2 days have passed, and the temperature rises above 38 again, this is a reason to show the child to the doctor.
