Does Your Child Struggle With Spelling? Try This Spelling Help For Kids

Children who fall behind classmates in spelling, who forget words easily, or who mix up letters when writing, are children who need special, loving, considerate attention regularly at home to help them overcome their unique learning problems. Forcing an activity on them or making it over-demanding only serves to intensify the child’s negative feelings about it. Here are some suggestions other parents have successfully used to help their children in these areas.

Develop auditory and vocal skills. Good spellers are usually good readers and good speakers and vice versa. Using the school or local library helps your child develop some of these skills. Restrict the amount of TV he watches. Your child cannot talk back to a television set. Children need to use the language they will be writing. Give your child the opportunity to talk with you.

Mistakes in writing: dysgraphia or dysorphography?

Does the child have many spelling mistakes? It means he needs help. However, mistakes are different. Difficulties in mastering writing can manifest themselves in different ways. Only a specialist can determine whether dysgraphia is in a student or dysorphography .

What is dysgraphia ? This is a persistent difficulty in mastering graphics, the basic section of the Russian language, which children master in grade 1. Graphics - a set of options for designating sounds with letters. For example, the sound C can be denoted by the letter C (catfish) or Z (eye), but not by the letter M. Moreover, no other letter can be written in the word elephant. It would seem simple? But it happens that a child cannot master sound-letter relationships because he has problems with speech disorders or problems with concentration. And then “stupid” mistakes appear in his works, distorting the sound of the word: omissions of letters, mixing of similar letters, rearrangements, repetitions, mirroring.

Dysorphography is the difficulty of mastering spelling, a section of the Russian language that regulates how to write each specific word, according to what rule. Of course, you can’t remember all the rules at once. We study them for 11 years at school, and sometimes even after, as adults. But for various reasons, spelling is very difficult for some children. There are from 5 to 50 spelling mistakes in the dictation of such schoolchildren, i.e. errors “on the rule” (for example, “voice” instead of eyes, “ischo” instead of yet, “pit” instead of spot, etc.). Here the sound of the word is not distorted: “voice” or “eye” - at the end it still sounds C. But only the meaning of these words is different. If we are talking about the organ of vision, then “eye”, because “eyes”.

Let's compare dysgraphic and spelling errors to understand that it can be difficult to distinguish between them.

Let's give an example of two children's works. On the first photo - dysgraphia. There are confusions of letters t-d (Antryusha), difficulties in indicating the softness of consonants in writing (vzali), permutations (utt), omissions (vyshi), non-marking of sentence boundaries.

The second photo shows dysorphography. Errors per rule predominate, there are only a few letter omissions. Such a letter can be called "phonetic" - the child as a whole conveys the sound of speech, but does not follow the rules.

Often in primary school children dysgraphia and dysorphography are observed simultaneously, since the causes of these disorders are similar. However, with age, the number of dysgraphic errors decreases and disappears. But dysorphography can persist into adulthood.

Note that writing disorders are diagnosed only when they are persistent, i.e. for a long time, a child in a dictation has 4-5 errors or more.

It is very important to recognize a writing disorder in time and determine its nature, since the content of speech therapy and psychological work with a child and the amount of assistance is determined by the type and mechanism of difficulties.
