Alphabet Beginning Sounds Picture Cards Sorting Activity -

Reading begins with our ears. Hearing the sounds in the words we speak and sing is one of the first steps toward understanding letter/sound relationships. Rhyming, blending and segmenting syllables and phonemes (sounds), and identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words are crucial literacy activities for preschoolers and kindergarteners. That is why I created this Beginning Sounds Picture Cards Sorting Activity!

Beginning Letter Sounds in Kindergarten:

BUILDING STRONG PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS BEGINS IN PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

IDENTIFYING INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS IN WORDS HELPS CHILDREN MAKE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN ORAL LANGUAGE AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE.

Early phonological awareness includes rhyming, clapping syllables, segmenting words by each sound, and identifying initial/middle/ending alphabet sounds in words.

While it’s equally important to teach the alphabet letter names and sounds, phonemic awareness should come first.

The beauty of working on phonemic awareness skills is that it easily fits into quick transitions throughout the day. Sing the alphabet song or silly rhyming songs, ask children to repeat word pairs that begin with the same sound, or clap syllables when transitioning to “re-cess” or “lunch.

I also like to teach kids to look in a mirror as they isolate a sound so they can see what their mouths are doing. Exaggerate sound production to help kids discern between sounds that are similar and often confusing, like /th/ in thin and /f/, or /m/ and /n/.

The beginning sounds pictures for kindergarten include header cards with upper and lower case letters A-Z and four alphabet picture cards for each letter.

Get kids really thinking about sounds and how we produce them to further their understanding. Here are some questions to keep in mind as children sort the picture cards.

  • What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word?
  • Do you know the letter that makes that sound?
  • What other pictures/words have the same beginning sound?
  • How do you make that sound with your mouth? Tongue? Breath? Throat?
  • Can you sing/stretch that sound, or is it quick?

Why Is It Important For Kids To Manipulate Sounds?

Distinguishing sounds in a word, and later manipulating those sounds help children make important connections as they begin to learn more about printed words.

There are five levels of phonological awareness. It’s important to guide students through each level with lots of modeling, scaffolding, games, sound worksheets, center activities, and repetition.

BUILDING PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS WITH EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNERS

All you need to do is print the beginning sound pictures and alphabet heading cards onto white card stock and laminate them.

Then, cut the pictures and headings apart.

Place the activity at the literacy center. Here are the steps for the learning activity:

  1. Lay all the letter activity cards on the floor.
  2. Place the picture cards in a pile.
  3. Draw a card, name the picture, and identify the first sound in the word.
  4. Find the corresponding letter and place the picture card beneath it.

Sound [a], letter Aa. | Nachalochka

I don't advise you to tell your child that you are about to start teaching him to read and that this is sooo important.

Just start the game.

But, for you personally, in this game there will be certain rules:

- first work with sound,

- then work with the letter, its graphic image.

Today you will need pictures of Dr. Aibolit, an antelope, a stork. I think that you are unlikely to find these heroes in the form of voluminous toys. Yes, this is not necessary. Pictures are quite suitable for the game, real pictures are paper ones. Can be printed and cut out.

We show a picture with Dr. Aibolit. We call his name, holding out the first sound - Aaaaaybolit. We explain that this doctor treats little animals. We ask the child to repeat the name of the doctor, also holding out the first sound. We ask the child to name the first sound in the name of the doctor.

Then you can read an excerpt from the fairy tale by heart:

Good doctor Aibolit

He is sitting under a tree.

Come to him for treatment

Both a cow and a wolf

Both a bug and a worm0003

And a bear.

And now let's act out a scene.

And Antelope came to Aibolit. Again, pronounce the first sound in the word Aaaaantelope. Ask the child to repeat - Aaaaantelope (what is the first sound in the word antelope?)

The antelope complains to the doctor:

- Ai, ai, ai! My throat hurts!

The doctor asks the antelope to open its mouth and say: Aaaaaaa! (let the child play the role of an antelope and speak for her).

Aibolit says to the antelope:

- You have aaaaaangina! (what is the first sound in the word sore throat?)

I will prescribe you a healthy sweet syrup and something else very important. Now I will call my assistant stork.

The doctor calls:

- Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

We ask the child to call the aaaaaist too. (what is the first sound in the word stork?)

Doctor:

— Dear stork, please go to the store and buy…

The stork returns. Showing the following picture, we read the poem by heart, asking the child before that, remember all the words that begin with the sound [a].

The stork was carrying cargo from the store

Pineapples, oranges

Apricots and watermelon.

The child names all the words with the sound [a] that he remembers. In each word, we stretch the first sound: aaaaanans, aaaa oranges, aaaapricots, aaaa watermelon.

The doctor explains to Antelope that it is very important to eat fruit all the time. They have a lot of healthy vitamins and they will protect against sore throats and colds.

After getting acquainted with the sound, we take up the letter.

Explain to the child that we hear speech sounds and that letters are symbols that represent these speech sounds.

Introduce the child to the letter Aa. There are two of them - you can say two sisters, the older one is big and the younger one is small. They don't look alike. Here is the problem! Very often, preschoolers are taught to write only capital letters. Apparently because the small letter “a” is more difficult for a child to write. But it is the small letter “a” that will be found in the texts at every step! And the child must memorize its graphic image well, so as not to be confused with other letters.

Let's get acquainted with the letters!

The first acquaintance is visual. Look at the pictures of the letter in the primer, on the cube, etc. The second is tactile. Lay out the letter "A" large with the help of sticks, mold both large and small ones from plasticine. When you sculpt a large letter, then pay the child’s attention to the fact that the “legs” of the letter are straight and of the same length. Next, write a letter: you can in the sand, on a marker board. But we must write in the correct order: from top to bottom, the left leg, from top to bottom, the right leg, the legs are straight and of the same length, the belt is from left to right. These subtleties of writing are very important.

And then you can also on paper.

I give my child a printed sheet. It contains several exercises for memorizing a letter in writing. First, color the letter (with a red pencil).

When I tell a child about speech sounds, I clarify: there are mouth-opening sounds (vowels) and mouth-closing sounds (consonants). The first is usually marked in red, and the second in blue.

After coloring, circle the big letter several times in the order shown.

Next, the child writes out a smaller letter.

The small letter “a” is not easy to write. Therefore, I suggest that the child circle it with a felt-tip pen along the inner paths. We give names to each element of the letter - “hat”, we write from left to right. Further "wand" down, further "tummy" from right to left.

In conclusion, we complete the task of finding a letter. This is called a correction test. In these three lines, you need to find the letters "A" and "a" and underline them or circle them, or cross them out.

At the end of the lesson, you can put a sticker on the completed worksheet. Or give your child their favorite candy. Better yet, offer to eat an orange. And do not forget to treat Aibolit, the antelope and the stork.

Praise your child throughout the session. If something doesn’t work out, then cheer.

Play each letter like this. Come up with a new scene.

No need to look for newfangled methods! Learn from the usual primer, for example, N.S. Zhukova.

I wish you success!
