Do you need some D words for kids? If so, today I’m going to give you some delightful words that begin with D that you can dutifully share with your diligent students.

We are not just going to dabble in D words, we are going to dive in head first and give you D word lists for preschoolers, kindergartners, and elementary students. As well as, D word lists for three-letter D words, four-letter D words, and common foods, animals, and objects that all start with D.

The Sounds of D

The letter D makes the /d/ sound as in: dime, dollar, and dance (D pronunciation). This sound is articulated when a quick downward movement of the tip of the tongue releases a voiced puff of air. (This D sound is similar to the T sound but is voiced.)

Note: The /d/ sound can be combined with the /r/ sound to create the ‘dr’ letter blend for words like: dream, drop, and drip.

D Words for Preschool

The letter D offers us lots of wonderful D words for preschool. These words include familiar animals and objects, as well as, common easy D words preschoolers might use every day.

Vocabulary Activities for Teaching D Words

• Make a D Word Craft – Turn the letter D into a Dinosaur or create a paper plate donut. Or if you aren’t interested in either of those ideas, look up other letter D word craft ideas for kids. Crafting is a fun can creative way of learning new D word vocabulary.

• Practice Printables for D Words – Worksheets, free letter D coloring pages, and printable activities can be great for reinforcing reading and writing skills, as well as, building D word vocabulary. (btw, be sure to get the free D Word Learning Pack in this post!)

• Read Books D Word Books – Check your bookshelves at home or make a trip to the library for some letter D books (letter D books are books that feature or repeat D words throughout.) Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey and Go, Dogs, Go by Dr Suess are great examples of letter D books.

• Write a D Word Acrostic Poem – Have your child pick a word from their D words list and write an acrostic poem for it. An acrostic poem is where you write your D word vertically then write a sentence starting with each letter given. (See more acrostic poem ideas for kids.)

• Practice Spelling D Words With Letter Tiles – Get a handful of letter tiles and look over your D words list. To practice spelling, call a D word from the list, then have your student find the letters and spell it with their alphabet squares. For your early readers or preschoolers who are working on letter recognition, write down the D word for them to copy.

Activities That Will Help Your Child to Learn Words With The Letter D

Making the child learn new words can be challenging at times. Even adults find it difficult to memorise words and put them to use when required. But when children learn newer words from an early age, their excitement will enable them to understand better. For achieving that you as a parent will have come up with fun ways to keep them interested in learning new words. Choose an alphabet every day, and read aloud new words with that letter. Indulging in some interesting activities can help the child learn more easily. Try these activities to learn words with the letter D:

1. The doughnut activity

Ask your child to take some craft sheets. Let them cut out oval shapes from them and make small holes in between to make them look like doughnuts. Ask them to decorate the doughnuts with their favourite things like glitter, beads, stickers or simply colour pencils. Introduce them to words like Doughnut, Dessert, Decorations, and draw in this fun way!

2. The desert activity

Take a sketchbook and try drawing a desert with your children. Colour the picture, and show them the ship of the desert: Camel. These depictions will help the child learn and understand the word ‘desert’ conceptually.

3. The rubber ducks

Arrange some rubber duck toys during bath time. Watch your kid play with them while letting them know the name of the animal Duck. Ask them to try and spell Duck based on the sound of the word. Add for fun to this activity by making quacking sounds similar to a duck.

4. Dinosaur cut-outs

Take craft sheets and draw dinosaurs over them. Cut the dinosaurs out of the sheet. While cutting out the dinosaur, make the child memorise the word. It might be a little difficult word for the child. But since children are early learners, they’ll learn soon! Moreover, dinosaurs are fascinating creatures for children and they will be excited to learn about them.

Several websites offer a number of activity sheets for kids to learn such concepts. For KG kids, there are activities to match a word to its corresponding picture. There are colouring sheets with letters, words and outlines of objects that start with that letter to colour in. Check out these activities and make your child learn some new words from D.

There are a lot of words starting with D that your child might use in day to day conversation. They will also read many of these words in their books. The best way to learn lots of new words is to inculcate the habit of reading from childhood. We had tried and included all types of words that might interest a pre-schooler, KG, or a primary class kid in these lists above. Let your child make a list of their own as they spot more and more things around that that start with D!

Learn the letter D | Tasks and prescriptions with the letter D

Tasks and prescriptions with the letter D for children of school and preschool age 4, 5, 6, 7 years. Acquaintance with the letter begins with the visual image of the letter and the connection with the associative image. This makes it easier for kids to memorize letters. Help the hedgehog get home. Guide him over the pebbles with the letter D. The child can trace the path with his finger, lay it out with pebbles or other objects, or draw the path with a felt-tip pen or pencil.

The letter D for preschoolers

The child is shown the letter D and asked what is shown next to the letter. This is a dolphin. The child paints the dolphin at will.

We ask the child to clap his hands when he hears the consonant sound [D]. Then we read the words and connect them with the diagram.

Developing visual gnosis - we offer the child to circle and name the letter that is hiding behind the dolphin; find the contours of the letter D and color them. We draw the letter D in the cells.
